The 2012 Promontory, which is the softest vintage to date, was slightly better this year than last year, as it had rounded out. It does not have the depth of the 2013, but it is a great wine on its own merits. Notes of new saddle leather, loamy soil, and crushed rock intermingle with blackcurrants, plum, tobacco leaf and spice in a full-bodied, wonderfully pure and large-scaled style with ripe, well-integrated tannin. It is accessible enough to enjoy, and in spite of its massiveness, it is certainly capable of evolving beautifully for 30 or more years.

The best wine so far (although I suspect the 2015 may ultimately enter the picture as well) is the nearly perfect 2013 Promontory Estate. It is simply richer and fuller, with greater integration of tannin, and tastes spectacular. With an opaque, dense purple color and notes of graphite, wet rocks, blackberry and blueberry fruit, some charcoal, and again, loads of spice and loamy soil nuances, the wine has great intensity, a full-bodied texture, and finely grained, sweet tannin. This is a stunner and again, accessible, but its best days are probably a good decade away, as this could very well turn out to be a 40- to 50-year wine.

The 2013 Promontory was utterly spellbinding when I tasted it last year. Since then, it has totally shut down after its recent bottling. Beams of mountain tannin and salinity give the wine its vibrancy, energy and pure mineral-driven intensity. Graphite, leather, game, smoke and dark stone fruit overtones start to take shape, but the 2013 is in no mood to show all of its cards. The 2013 is the most brilliant wine made yet at Promontory, and it has plenty of upside.

Verite La Muse 2015
97

Verite Winery La Muse 2015Lisa Perrotti Brown beschreit den Verite Le Muse 2015 am 28. Februar 2018 wie folgt:

Composed of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec, the 2015 La Muse sports a very deep garnet-purple color, leaping from the glass with exuberant crème de cassis, blueberry pie and licorice notes plus suggestions of Indian spices, dark chocolate, menthol, sautéed herbs and potpourri. Full-bodied, rich and seductive in the mouth, it delivers tons of black and blue fruit preserves flavors, accented by exotic spices, framed with velvety tannins and finishing on a persistent earthy/mineral note. 3,900 cases were made.

14.70% Vol. Alc.

Vintage
The winter of 2014-2015 was another mild and dry one, which included only two weekend rainstorms. Budbreak came in mid-March and the vines began to bloom early—at the end of April. A cool April and May with some rainy spells meant that bloom did not finish until June. A warm and dry June led to a July veraison kickoff. Vigneron Pierre Seillan recalls that of his 49 vintages, 2015 was the first to begin picking in August—August 31 to be precise. Harvest lasted 12 days and finished on September 12. Although yields were low, the quality of the grapes in this vintage was outstanding.

Tasting Notes
The 2015 La Muse opens with a classic ruby-red core and brilliant pink-purple outer rim. A youthful, clean bouquet recalls wildflower bloom in Northern California, aromas of purple flowers and garrigue rising from the rocks. Its fruits are Bing cherries, black raspberry, currants and red apple, offered here in a fresh yet restrained ripeness. Like the rock bed of its loamy Sonoma County vineyard, La Muse bends and turns with seductive aromas of baking spices, juniper berry and a redwood grove in spring. Silky, well-integrated tannins with a lingering finish complete a wine with signature balance. La Muse is from the earth, hinting to depths of clay and alluvial soils, with structure and suppleness that will age beautifully for decades to come. – August 2017

Verite Le Desir 2015
100

Verite Le Desir 2015Lisa Perrotti Brown beschreit den Verite Le Desir 2015 am 28. Februar 2018 wie folgt:

A blend of 64% Cabernet Franc, 27% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec, the very deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Le Désir is a little reticent at this very youthful stage, offering glimpses at dusty soil, iron ore, black truffles and salami notes over a core of red currant jelly, black raspberries, blackberries and star anise plus a waft of roses. Medium-bodied, very firm and very elegant yet incredibly intense in the mouth, it delivers loads of red fruit and earthy layers, finishing with great length and depth. 2,500 cases produced.

14.40% Vol. Alc.

Tasting Notes
The hallmark of the 2015 Le Désir is its structured and precise palate. There is a balance between softness and hardness: iron-rich, rocky minerality, aromas of new leather and cigar. The clear, driving expression of bright red fruit comes to the fore. Wild strawberries, cherries, and crisp apple join with the signature herbal tone of Cabernet Franc. Fresh, subtle pea shoots and heirloom tomato vine—along with notes of red licorice and tobacco box—pave the way to a linear, silky finish, resounding with a floral bouquet of lilacs and violets. Remarkably expressive in its youth, Le Désir is a multi-layered and complex wine. Its depths will unfold for ages. – August 2017

Verite La Joie 2015Lisa Perrotti Brown beschreit den Verite La Joie 2015 am 28. Februar 2018 wie folgt:

A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2015 La Joie features a very deep purple-black color and almost electric nose of crushed blackcurrants, ripe black cherries and mulberries with sparks of raspberry pie, wild blueberries, unsmoked cigars, charcuterie and crushed stones. Medium to full-bodied and charged with the most amazing energy, the youthful, vibrant black-fruited palate is framed by very firm, very finely grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing with lingering crushed stones and earth layers. 4,000 cases produced.

An enveloping, structured wine, La Joie pours a vibrant purple core graduating to a deep outer rim. Mint, sage and lavender aromas fill out an earth-driven bouquet. Ripe fruit—black currant and cherries, damson plum—fulfill the promise of new world wines, while a brooding finish and grippy, well-integrated tannins pay homage to the old world. The Vérité signature—the message of the soil—is here captured in undertones of granite, iron and limestone. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, developed individually by micro-cru in our Sonoma County vineyards, the wine will mature gracefully for many years to come. – August 2017

Philip Togni 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa ValleyAntonio Galloni beschreibt den Philip Togni 2014 Cabernet Sauvvignon EstateDezember 2016 wie folgt:

Togni's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is quite dark and powerful, but also very much medium in body. Graphite, smoke, savory herbs, mint, leather and a core of inky dark red and purplish fruit infuse this deep, beautifully layered Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 is a wine built on energy and aromatics that won't hit its stride until at least age ten.

94+ Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Philip Togni 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley30th Dec 2016 Robert M. Parker Jr.:

The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate from his vineyard high on Spring Mountain is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It seems slightly more approachable and civilized for a young Togni wine, with a dense ruby/purple color, loads of blackcurrant, licorice, and graphite, some earth and spice, but very subtle earth nuances. It is full-bodied and rich, but the tannins are well-integrated and don’t scream as loudly as some vintages of Togni can. For Togni, this is probably one of his more forward and precociously styled Cabernets. It will probably approach drinkability in several years, but don’t discount its aging potential, as this easily has 20-25 years of cellaring potential.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a very classic nose of cassis, warm plums and crushed blackberries with notions of cigar box, garrigue, damp soil and truffles plus wafts of menthol and underbrush. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a firm frame of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and minerally.

Philip Togni 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Napa ValleyAntonio Galloni beschreibt den Philip Togni 2015 Cabernet Sauvvignon Estate im März 2018 wie folgt:

A fleshy deep, wine, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exudes richness and sheer exotic beauty from the very first taste. As always, the Togni wines need bottle age to be at their best. In 2015, time will mostly help the aromatics develop, as the tannins are quite soft for such a young wine. Expressive floral and savory notes develop with time in the glass, but the 2015 is years away from hitting its stride. It will be interesting to see where the 2015 goes in the coming years and decades. Sadly, yields are down a whopping 50%.

Philip Togni 2015 Tanbark Hill Cabernet Sauvvignon

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill is soft, succulent and inviting, all of which make it a super-appealing wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. The radiance and fruit intensity of the year comes through nicely, and yet the wine retains its classic, mid-weight sense of structure and overall feel. Crushed flowers and sweet spice add lift in this gracious, pretty wine from Togni.

98+ Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2014Verkostungsnotiz von Lisa Perrotti-Brown für den Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 am 29. Oktober 2018:

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon has a drop-dead gorgeous nose of Sichuan pepper, hoisin, peppered salami and fertile loam over a core of blackberry preserves and redcurrant jelly with touches of kirsch and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated yet still maintaining that wonderful purity and elegance that is the signature of this estate, it has layer upon layer of earthy nuances and a very long finish.

96 Sucklingpunkte für den Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2014Verkostungsnotiz von James Suckling für den Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 am 26. Januar 2017:

Amazing burnt-orange and currant aromas with tar and lead pencil. Blackberries, too. Changes all the time. Mesmerizing. Full-bodied and powerful with super-polished tannins and a long and intense finish. The polished and fine tannins coat your mouth. Glorious. Needs three to four years to soften.

96 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2014Verkostungsnotiz von Antonio Galloni für den Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 im Dezember 2018:

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as a blend of the 2013 and 2012, with the darker fruit profile of the former and the mid-weight structure of the latter. Hints of mocha, chocolate, tobacco, menthol and licorice add shades of nuance, but the 2014 is in that stage where bottles are best left alone for several more years. Even so, the 2014 is another striking, alluring wine from Spottswoode.

Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
93

The clarity and precision to this wine are phenomenal with blackcurrants, floral notes, blueberries, and orange peel. Complex and subtle with grace and stature. Full body, ultra-polished and refined tannins and bright acidity. The wine needs three to four years to open on the palate, but already it has a caressing quality to it.

This is a pretty third wine of Dominus, showing freshness and richness at the same time. Full-bodied, juicy and rich with plenty of blackberry and currant character. Delicious now but even better in 2019.

The second wine, the 2012 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine has a similar profile, but certainly comes across as less nuanced and slightly less concentrated and profound compared to its bigger sister. It is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. It does reflect the fact that the selection process has gotten so severe that the second wine at Dominus is really special in top vintages such as 2012 or 2013. The wine has low acidity, beautiful ripe black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, a hint of unsmoked cigar tobacco and a touch of roasted herbs in the finish. This is a beauty to drink over the next 15-20 years.

92 Punkte Robert Parker Napanook 2014 Napa Valley Dominus EstateRobert M. Parker beschreibt den Napanook 2014 by Dominus Estate 28. Oktober 2016 wie folgt:
The 2014s, where the production of Napanook was only 2,200 cases and Dominus slightly more than the 2015 at 4,000 cases, was another early harvest, although somewhat later than 2015. The 2014 Napanook is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot, showing notes of loamy earth, Christmas fruitcake, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit and underbrush in a supple, fragrant and lush heady style. It is another successful wine that should drink beautifully young and age nicely for up to 20 years.

Christian Moueix’s Dominus Estate continues to be one of California’s leaders in turning out gorgeously elegant, complex and long-lived wines. A magnum of 1991 from my cellar tasted several weeks before I left for California was pure perfection and evidence that at 25 years old, before he had built his stunning winery, great quality was coming from this iconic vineyard. The 2015s are certainly going to be one of his all-time great vintages, rivaling 2013, 2012, 2007, 2002, 2001 and his earliest classics, such as 1994 and 1991. Production in 2015 was about 3,000 cases of Napanook and 3,800 cases of Dominus.

96 Punkte James Suckling für den Napanook 2015 Napa Valley Dominus EstateJames Suckling im Mai 2018:

This is fantastic on the nose with blackberries and forest flowers. Very aromatic. Full body with soft, well-integrated and medium-grained tannins. Undertones of black olives. Love the hints of sandalwood. Drink or hold.

93+ Parker Punkte für Napanook 2015 Napa Valley Dominus EstateLisa Perrotti Brown im Oktober 2017:

Bottled in July 2017, Dominus’ more approachable, less tannic sister wine, Napanook, is a blend this year of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine is redolent of crème de cassis, potpourri, plum preserves and violets with hints of dark chocolate, menthol, licorice and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is densely packed with black fruit preserves and earthy layers, supported by firm, ripe, fine-grained tannins and finishing with great length.

Christian Moueix began our tasting of the 2015 vintage with a big smile. “We loved the vintage from the beginning,” he commented simply. Dominus winemaker Tod Mostero explained why 2015 was special: “We had a lot of winter rain—15 inches in December 2014. But then we had a very dry spring—just two inches in March and April. This equated to less vegetative growth, because when you have very little rain in spring, the vegetative growth tends to be limited. This means you need less water in the summer, since the vines prepare themselves for a dry growing season. Because we dry farm, the roots grow deeper and access water that normally wouldn’t be available. We had a similar profile in 2013. The 2015 temperatures were higher than normal but not excessive. Yields were about the same as 2013—smaller than average. The grapes were small. We experienced an early budburst, flowering and harvest, with harvest starting on September 2nd and finished by September 30th."

Dominus 2005 Dominus Estate Napa Valley

Dominus 2005 Napa Valley mit 98 Parker Punkten ausgezeichnetRobert M. Parker Jr. June 2015:

This blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot (note that rarely is any Merlot utilized at the historic Napanook Estate in Yountville). The alcohol, by California standards, is a relatively modest 14.1%. Blending the best of French savoir faire with the brilliant fruit purity and ripeness of Napa Valley, Moueix has turned in another tour de force that seems far superior today than it did when it was first released. This is one of the vintage’s greatest wines. Dense purple and youthful, with a glorious nose of earth, blackcurrants, sweet black cherries and incense, the oak is pushed way in the background, as it is in all of the Moueix wines, and the result is a wine of terroir, of great originality and authenticity. This full-bodied classic from Dominus can be drunk now, but really won’t hit its prime for another 4-5 years and last at least another two decades or more.

Dominus Estate 2004 mit 97 Parker PunktenRobert M. Parker Jr. April 2014 / zehn Jahre später:

Like so many 2004s, the 2004 Dominus is a full-bodied wine showing brilliantly at age ten, with loads of complex cedar, kirsch, Christmas fruitcake, black currants and spice box. It has a creamy, opulent texture, but remains light on its feet. This sexy wine is showing exceptionally well and is best drunk over the next 10-15 years. Not one of the longest-lived wines from Dominus, but it is certainly at a wonderful point in its evolution right now.

Dominus 2006 mit 96 Parker Punkten ausgezeichnetRobert M. Parker Jr. Dezember 2008:

There are 6,500 cases of the superb 2006 Dominus (91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot). Its dark plum/purple color is accompanied by aromas and flavors of truffles, forest floor, black cherries, black currants, and Asian spices. One of the finest wines of the vintage, it is complete, full-bodied, and seamlessly built with beautiful ripe tannins, low acidity, and a luscious, layered mouthfeel. The aromatics are even more evolved and complex than the 2005's. The 2006 should drink well for 20-25 years.

Starting to take on the tertiary character of ripe fruit and savory components with dusty tannins. Full and round with a lovely texture and a light salty, meaty and tobacco character. Forest floor. Sweet and sour. Just opening.

Dominus 2008 Dominus Estate Napa Valley

Dominus 2008 mit 99 Parker Punkten bewertetRobert M. Parker Jr. Dezember 2010:

Made in a more masculine style, the 2008 Dominus has all of that along with bigger body and more structure, fat, density and texture. Both are brilliant wines and they represent the finest back-to-back vintages for Dominus since 2001 and 2002 or 1990 and 1991. Both the 2007 and 2008 Dominus should drink well for 25-30 years. This estate, owned by Christian Moueix, includes the famed Napanook Vineyard that was the base of so many of the historic Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons of the 1950s and 1960s. Interestingly, they have completely eliminated Merlot from the bottling. The 2007 Dominus is a 5,400-case blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. There are 4,200 cases of the 2008 Dominus which is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Lower yields resulted in a denser, more concentrated wine. The remarkable thing about these cuvees is that they smell like a hypothetical blend of a top Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and a serious Bordeaux, possibly a cross blend of a Pomerol and Pauillac. Both wines possess silky sweet tannins, which is the big difference between Dominus post-1990 and the first seven vintages, where the tannin content was relatively high. About 40% new oak is used in their upbringing.

A cabernet-based red that’s all about the finish. Shows phenomenal character of caramelised orange, berries and lightly toasted oak. It’s also wonderfully structured, with great tannin, fruit, and acid balance. Try after 2018.

Dominus 2010 Napa Valley mit perfekten 100 Punkten ausgezeichnetRobert M. Parker Jr. 31. Oktober 2013:

Composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the stunning, full-bodied 2010 Dominus boasts an exceptional perfume of hoisin sauce, licorice, underbrush, forest floor, plums, black currants and jammy cherries intertwined with hints of cedar, baking spices and oak. Full-bodied and voluptuously textured, the 2010 is on a slightly faster evolutionary track than the 2009 (somewhat of an anomaly for these two vintages). This exquisite as well as prodigious 2010 can be drunk young, but it should age effortlessly for 20-25 years. Bravo!

Fabulous purity and clarity of fruit. Black currants, blackberries and violets. Full body, big soft tannins and a chocolate, hazelnut and dark fruit character. Some hot stones too. Ripe, velvety and fruity finish. Better in 2020 but delicious to drink now. Wonderful Dominus.

Dominus 2012 Napa Valley mit 98 Punkten bei ParkerRobert M. Parker Jr. beschreibt ihn im Oktober 2015 wie folgt:

The exuberance and drama in the stunning nose of the dense plum-colored 2012 Dominus offers up notes of Asian spice, ripe, black currants, kirsch, tobacco leaf and Christmas fruitcake. It is full-bodied and opulent, with no hard edges, a seamless integration of acidity, wood and tannin and a density and richness that are built to go on for 25-30 years.
