The 2016 d’Armailhac. which was bottled in May 2018. has an elegant bouquet that unfolds in the glass. offering blackberries. briar and a touch of cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with dense tannin. grippy in the mouth. and quite voluminous. with perhaps more density on the solid. almost broad-shouldered finish compared to the Clerc-Milon. This fulfills all my expectations from my barrel tasting and is quite simply one of the best d’Armailhac wines ever made.

The 2016 d'Armailhac is powerful and dense. just as it was from barrel. Readers will have to give the 2016 at least a few years in bottle. as the tannins are imposing. Dark red plum. licorice. spice. iron. game and scorched earth all give d'Armailhac its distinctive savory flavor profile that is quite appealing. Time in the glass brings out additional layers of nuance that complete the wine nicely.

BEST EVER!
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 D’Armailhac (a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) hits the ground running with wonderfully open-knit, flamboyant scents of Morello cherries, black raspberries, blackcurrant jelly and rose oil, leading to an undercurrent of cinnamon toast, aniseed and mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with energy and expressiveness, delivering red and black berry layers with loads of spicy sparks, framed by plush tannins, finishing long and fragrant.

92 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für denAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau d Armailhac 2018 Paulliac wie folgt:

The 2018 d'Armailhac is bright, fresh and so inviting, just as it was en primeur. Sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, spice, tobacco and anise add lovely aromatic complexity. All of the intensity of the year comes through nicely and yet the personality of Armailhac is evident also. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. There is a bit more breadth and richness that is the result of yields that were just 32 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to the more typical 42 or so. It was a vintage marked by heat stress, small berries and lower juice to skin ratio, as well as some parcels affected by mildew.

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has an enthralling bouquet of tobacco-infused black fruit. shaved truffle and pencil shavings; crushed stone emerges with continued aeration. The Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly in the driving seat here. just like the 1996. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. more saline and marine-influenced than Pichon Baron. and a tad spicier toward the finish. which is one of the most impressively persistent I have ever encountered in a Pichon-Lalande. fanning out with gusto and leaving the mouth still tingling 60 seconds after it has departed. Chateau Pontet Canet 2016 mit 98 Parker Punkten bewertetLisa Perrotti Brown 30. November 2018

The blend of the 2016 Pontet-Canet is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon. 30% Merlot. 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Around 55% of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels. 15% in two-year-old barrels and 35% in cement amphorae for 16 months. Deep garnet-purple colored. it opens with opulent scents of plum preserves. spice cake. hoisin and crème de cassis with fragrant wafts of potpourri. wood smoke and rose hip tea. Medium to full-bodied. rich and decadent. with loads of spicy layers. it has a firm. velvety texture with great freshness and incredible depth. finishing very long and on a compelling mineral note.

2016 marks the 40th vintage at Pontet-Canet for Alfred Tesseron. Winemaker Jean-Michel Comme mentioned it was wet at the beginning of the year. but thankfully the weather changed in late June. Thus. 2016 was a more normal/typical mildew year. so the disease pressure wasn’t too much of an issue. Then it was very dry until fall. He believes the vintage could be compared to 1961 or 2010. The result is an uninhibited. truly singular showing of Pontet-Canet this year—perhaps the richest. most sumptuous and hedonic expression of the vintage of all the great Left Bank wines.

The 2016 Pontet-Canet is absolutely breathtaking. Powerful. ample and racy in the glass. the 2016 is one of the most exquisitely well-balanced young Pontet-Canets I can remember tasting. Savory. high-toned aromatics and brisk mineral notes lend energy and delineation as this vivid wonderfully alive wine opens up in the glass. The flavors are dark and incisive. but it is the wine's total sense of harmony that is most compelling. All of the elements are simply in the right place. The 2016 is tremendous. It's as simple as that. As is often the case. Pontet-Canet is one of the most singular wines in Bordeaux. Alfred Tesseron could have chosen to play things safe when he took over the management of the estate in the mid-1990s. Instead. he chose a very different path. No proprietor in Bordeaux has taken more risks over the last two decades than Alfred Tesseron. A commitment to biodynamic farming. sustainability across the entire estate more broadly. and the adoption of new concepts for Bordeaux. such as aging a portion of the wine in terra cotta. set Pontet-Canet apart from other properties in Pauillac and the Left Bank. Not surprisingly. the wine is also starkly different from the wines of neighboring estates.

Composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Pontet-Canet gives up beautifully fragrant notes of rosehip tea, lilacs, cinnamon stick, cloves, dried leaves and underbrush with a core of kirsch, raspberry coulis, warm plums and red and black currants plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing, minerally and wonderfully elegant with a well-played texture of approachable, plush tannins and a long, fragrant finish. Beautiful. Aging took place in 50% new and 15% in second fill barrels and the remaining 35% in amphorae for 16 months, much of the material for which came from the soil at Pontet-Canet!

A complex nose of blueberries, elderberries, dried fruit, spice and dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied with a harmonious, balanced texture. The tannins are still firm and powerful, but there’s balance and finesse to the whole thing. Tight and reserved, yet long and energetic. The tannins open slowly. Dusty texture. The 2018 Pontet-Canet is made up of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon. 22% Merlot. 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Picking began on September 24 and finished on October 5; aging is in 55% oak barriques and 45% amphorae. Very deep purple-black in color. it comes rolling sensuously out of the glass with all the opulence and seduction of Cleopatra on a carpet. It emerges with flamboyant scents of crème de cassis. preserved plums and blueberry compote. and after a few moments. it bursts with nuances of molten licorice. sandalwood. Chinese five spice. candied violets. dark chocolate and dried roses. followed by underlying earthy suggestions of fallen leaves. black truffles. underbrush and wild sage. Full-bodied. wonderfully dense. rich. impossibly layered and very. very decadent. the palate delivers all it promises on the nose. with a firm. wonderfully velvety frame and finishing with epic length. a scintillating wave of freshness and a beguiling perfume. The 2018 Pontet-Canet is a freak of nature. Dark. rich and explosive. the 2018 possesses off the charts richness and concentration. much of it coming from tiny yields of just ten hectoliters per hectare. or one third of a normal crop. The 2018 soars out of the glass with stunning aromatic intensity and depth. Black cherry. gravel. grilled herbs. leather. lavender and menthol stain the palate. Dense and hedonistically ripe. the 2018 is a stunningly beautiful wine. The grapes were crushed by hand. Because of the tiny yields. the entire production was vinified in Pontet-Canet's new smaller concrete vats. All winemaking was done manually. without the aid of external temperature control or electricity. The 2018 is aging in a combination of 55% new oak and 45% terra cotta amphora. Quite simply. I have never tasted anything like it. und vergibt ihm 96-99 Punkte.

The 2016 Lynch-Bages delivers on its promise from barrel with an intense blackberry. cedar and mineral-driven bouquet that actually reminds me of Lafite-Rothschild. A faint dark chocolate scent makes a brief appearance. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin. pure black fruit and a velvety texture. There is wonderful structure and focus on the finish. followed by a persistent saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Lynch-Bages. easily the best since the twin titans of 1989 and 1990.

Chateau Lynch Bages 2016 PauillacAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Lynch Bages im Januar 2019 wie folgt:

A stellar wine. the 2016 Lynch-Bages is dark and explosive in the glass. Beams of tannin and bright acids give the 2016 its sense of drive and tension. From bottle. the 2016 is quite a bit more powerful than it was from barrel. Dark flavors and potent tannins give the 2016 a distinctly brooding. somber feel. Sage. lavender. menthol. licorice and wild cherry are all laced into the potent. dramatically sweeping finish. Readers should not be in a rush. as the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so. it is super-impressive today.

I am a little bit speechless about this one. I have not seen such earthy and totally deep character of the soil in a young Mouton in my career. Of course. I didn’t taste 1945 or 1959 when they were young. but I have been lucky enough to have a few bottles in my life. There is really terroir-driven character to this. Layered and so intense with polished and incredible tannins.

99 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 PauillacAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 Pauillac wie folgt:

The 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a rich, shockingly flamboyant wine endowed with tremendous fruit density and a level of unctuousness that could be taken for a wine still in barrel. Marvelously open and fleshy, the 2018 is utterly breathtaking today. I imagine it will shut down at some point, but today it is all seduction here. Ripe red cherry, plum, mocha, spice and cedar infuse the 2018 with tons of complexity. This is a tremendous showing.

99 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 PauillacLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 Pauillac wie folgt:

The 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc—there is also a splash of all the Petit Verdot they had, but it doesn’t even register in the percentage. It has 13.8% alcohol, which is relatively modest for the vintage. Deep garnet-purple colored, it straight away pops with bright, vivacious notes of crushed blackcurrants, juicy blackberries and redcurrant jelly with slowly emerging nuances of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice and black tea, plus a waft of dusty red soil. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house with super firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savory with lingering mineral suggestions. This is so, so delicious and, due to the ripeness of tannins, approachable now. It will be difficult to keep your mitts off it for a good 5-7 years, when all those tightly tucked away nuances should begin to emerge. After that, it should improve over the course of 25 years or more and drink for 40+.

95-98 Punkte vom Wine Spectator für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 PauillacJames Mothels bewertet den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 Pauillac wie folgt:

Very gutsy in feel. with lots of tobacco leaf. loam and espresso notes swirling around a core of steeped black currant and warm fig fruit flavors. The muscular finish is a jumble right now. but there's ample acidity coiled within. A wine that clearly wants to stand out from the pack.

The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot and has 13.3% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock intoxicating scents of blackcurrant cordial, baked plums and black cherry compote with an undercurrent of dark chocolate, licorice, cast-iron pan, cedar chest and fertile loam, plus a waft of pencil lead. The delicately crafted, medium-bodied palate is dripping with class, featuring layers of mineral-laced black fruits and exquisitely ripe, singularly Lafite tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. This simply stunning, delicately crafted expression of 2018 with its singularly evocative imprint of Lafite will require a good 7-8 years in bottle, then should continue to inspire awe over the following 40+ years.

The 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is quite powerful and dense. Aging. and specifically. the barrel regime of 18 months in oak (60% new) has left the 2016 with a heavy toast/torrefaction quality that at present overpowers the dark fruit and Cabernet aromatics the wine showed from barrel. Frankly. I liked the 2016 more en primeur.
