Millton Riverpoint Viognier 2014

Lisa Perrotti Brown Jan 2015:
The 2012 Riverpoint Vineyard Viognier offers pretty peach and apple blossom scents with suggestions of allspice and clover honey. Medium-bodied, it gives plenty of creaminess in the mouth with lively acidity supporting the rich stone fruit and spice flavors, finishing with very good length.

Das Weingut beschreibt den Millton Riverpoint Viognier wie folgt:
Riverpoint Vineyard sits in the Matawhero Appellation of the Gisborne winegrowing district. The original vineyard was planted in 1978 and in 1997 this vineyard was replanted with Viognier, amongst the first commercial planting of this exotic variety in New Zealand. Situated alongside the old Waipaoa riverbed the soils here contain high levels of fine silt and silken clays and these minerals assist in producing aromatic and dense wines. Proximity to the Pacific Ocean exposes the site to a cooling sea breeze during summer and this effect plays a pivotal role in capturing a special brackish salty aroma and a soft satin flavor. Muscat petit Grains was planted at Riverpoint in 2011 and Marsanne was planted in Opou Vineyard in 2010.

The Viognier was harvested by hand, fermented in a mix of 300 litre French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks with native yeasts.  Included  in the final blend is a parcel of Viognier that spent 77 days fermenting on skins in open top 600 litre French oak barrels.  In the Rhone Valley of France there are a number of complimentary white grape varietals. The 2015 has the addition of Marsanne to providing an element of depth and richness while 2% Muscat give a fruity lift as well to this wine.  A haunting wine with bristling delicacy, buoyed by a noted mineral edge the  poached pear and red capsicum flavours give a spiced and sappy appeal. The salinity sings the proximity of the vineyard to its maritime environment. We consider the aromatic delight of Viognier will enhance and partner foods high in Umami flavours.

Millton Clos de Ste. Anne Les Arbres Viognier 2013

19 /20 Punkte Raymond Chan
16. Februar 2015:
Fruit from ‘Les Arbres’ a section in the lie of the forest, the whole bunches ‘crunched’ and warm-fermented in 600 L demi-muids to 14.5% alc. and 1.8 g/L RS, the wine aged 11 months in 40% new demi-muids, the wine undergoing batonnage with 75% MLF. Full, even, light golden yellow colour. The bouquet is full and broad with well-concentrated aromas of ripe apricots and savoury yellow stonefruit kernels, lifted by exotic yellow florals. This has great presence, the fruit stylishly reserved, growing subtly in creamy, nutty richness. Dry to taste and full bodied, a fulsome and mouthfilling array of flavours of ripe, exotic tropical fruits are lifted by exotic yellow florals with nutty and honied notes. This is rich and weighty with a rounded, near unctuous mouthfeel and soft textures. The generosity is enhanced by some alcohol power which leads to a soft, full, rich finish with exotic floral and stonefruit flavours. This is a full, rich, mouthfilling Viognier with exotic fruit flavours and underlying power. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern fare over the next 5+ years. Feb 2015 19.0-/20 Feb 2015

This latest release of James and Annie Millton’s ’Clos de Ste Anne’ collection may be the finest yet. They consider 2013 to be "possibly the best vintage in 30 years and all five of these wines will age for many years to come”. Indeed, the 2013 vintage is seen as one of the greats in the Gisborne, and north eastern North Island regions, and to date, the wines I’ve seen bear this out. The ‘Clos de Ste Anne’ wines are very special for the Milltons, as they are the produce from the single ‘Clos de Ste Anne’ estate, based on the original ‘Naboth’s Vineyard’ planted in 1981 to assess the potential of hillside vineyards in Gisborne. ‘Naboth’s’ was a completely different approach to the region’s existing vineyards which were planted on the flat land, primarily designed with high yields and ease of management in mind. Based on the unique character of the resultant wines, the Milltons extended the plantings in 1989, consolidating the varietal mix. ‘Naboth’s’ is now joined by ‘La Bas’, ‘La Cote’, ‘Les Arbres’, and ‘The Crucible’, and all these vineyards lie in the ‘Clos de Ste Anne’ estate which measures just over 12 ha.

The Clos de Ste Anne wines are particularly special for James Millton, as they are a tribute to his wife Annie. They are made with the greatest technical care, but also with the greatest love and inspiration to reflect their philosophies and experience of winegrowing for over three decades. Stylistically, the wines draw from the example of the world’s great wines, but they seek to capture the uniqueness of the Milton’s approach and the terroir of the site. Complexity and interest are aims in their making. Organic winegrowing, Millton being BioGro organic certified since 1989 and the adherence to biodynamics, Millton being Demeter certified since 2009, are all integral with the crafting of these wines, these concepts part of the Millton’s foundation. Here, I review the 2013 ‘Clos de Ste Anne’ collection, due for release at the start of March 2015.

Millton Clos de Ste. Anne La Bas Chenin Blanc 2013

19 /20 Punkte Raymond Chan

16. Februar 2015:
Brilliant, light golden-hued straw-yellow colour lighter on edge. The nose is very elegant, tightly bound and refined in expression, with restrained aromas of white and yellow florals and stonefruits, along with nuances of pineapple, unveiling waxy mineral, wet stone and nutty detail. The aromatics grow in presence and depth with aeration. Bone-dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the intensity and depth of fruit confers an elegance of proportion. Tightly concentrated flavours of white and yellow stonefruits are subtly lifted by floral and honeysuckle notes and mineral suggestions. The palate features a fine-grained phenolic core of fruit extract, enlivened and driven by bright, lacy acidity. Some alcoholic power underlines the fruit which carries to a richly detailed, long lingering, dry finish. This is a fresh, elegantly concentrated, powerfully driven dry Chenin Blanc with stonefruit and mineral flavours. Serve with seafood and white meat dishes over the next 10 years. Fruit from ‘Las Bas’, WBP and indigenous yeast fermented to 14.5% alc. and 3.6 g/L RS, TA 7.3 g/L and pH 3.56 the wine aged 9 months in seasoned 600 L demi-muids on lees, without batonnage or MLF. 19.0/20 Feb 2015

Lisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Opou Vineyard Chardonnay 2013 von Millton im Januar 2015 :

The nose of the 2013 Opou Vineyard Chardonnay is an exciting combination of fruity and savory in equal measures: peaches, yellow apples and nectarines matched by toast, roasted almonds and marmite plus a fragrant hint of ginger. Medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with satin textured stone fruit and yeasty flavors, finishing long and creamy.

Kumeu River 2016 Hunting Hill ChardonnayVerkostungsnotiz von Joe Czerwinski vom 28. Februar 2018:
The voluminous yet weightless 2016 Hunting Hill Chardonnay continues this bottling's successful run of vintages. Hints of roasted cashew accent tropical fruit, but thanks to a zesty line of citrusy acids, the wine powers forward without ever seeming overly broad or heavy. It simply coats the mouth with a stunning array of complex flavors, lingering gently on the finish.

95 Punkte James Suckling für den Kumeu River 2017 Hunting Hill ChardonnayVerkostungsnotiz von James Suckling vom 19. Oktober 2018:

Greywacke Wild Sauvignon Blanc 2016 Wild Ferment Marlborough

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc shows restrained aromas of fig and melon on the nose, followed by ripe notes of nectarine on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied and richly textured, with a long, silky finish. It may age a bit better than some other classic Marlborough Sauvignons, but don't hold it beyond about 2021. Despite challenging vintage conditions in 2017 and 2018, the current lineup at Greywacke is undeniably successful. "Eighteen ended up being the better of the two," said owner-winemaker Kevin Judd during my January visit. "But they were both hard work." Judd said 2018 combined the warmest vintage on record with record precipitation in February. He seems equally comfortable with Riesling and Pinot Gris as he is with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, using wood for portions of their élevage, just as in the Burgundy varieties. For Riesling, Judd said, "The oak is just to get some evolution—it lets the sulfides [most of the wines here are fermented with indigenous yeasts] become less stinky." Don't overlook the terrific series of botrytis wines!

Greywacke Pinot Noir 2015 Marlborough
91 Punkte Wine Advocate für 2014 !
Verkostungsnotiz von Lisa Perrotti-Brown vom 30. Dezember 2016:
Medium ruby colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir exudes lovely floral notes of roses and lavender with a core of cranberries and red currants, plus hints of Provence herbs and fragrant earth. Light to medium-bodied, soft, elegant and filled with earthy/perfumed flavor layers, it delivers great expression and poise.

Marlborough Pinot Noir is severely under-recognised. Some superb bottlings have emerged over the years. Fromm, Villa Maria, Auntsfield, Saint Clair, TerraVin and Te Whare Ra to name a few. The Greywacke is another one up there. At present about 20% whole bunch. Maybe more can work well? Moderately dark ruby-red with slight purple hues. This has a full, deep nose of ripe dark raspberry and cherry fruit with an array of soft red fruits and florals, the faintest whole bunch herbal detail, some toasty oak spices. Full-flavoured and mouthfilling layers of flavour unfold. It isn't the ripest and darkest in fruit, but the interplay of soft red fruits, florals, herbs, spices and toasty oak is sensational to me. Soft and supple textures enhance the opulence and the wine carries effortlessly to a lush and exotic finish.

“The sweet and fragrant spices and perfumed pinot noir fruits, a hallmark of this vineyard, are alluring and the depth that follows makes for an engaging, convincing pinot noir. The palate has succulent, attractive bright red cherry fruit aromas and the palate has a very focused, powerful yet elegant feel, and a feathery and ethereal finish.”

94 Punkte Winespectator für den Escarpment Pinot Noir Kiwa 2015 Martinborough“Dusty white pepper and rose petal notes are aromatic, leaping out of the glass to complement the dense core of mineral-laced dark fruit flavors, with plenty of anise and nutmeg details. The intensity gains momentum on the finish, which is expressive and generous.”

“Scented, enticing pinot noir with a mix of floral, cherry and berry flavours and a suggestion of spice all nicely restrained by fine, drying tannins. A little closed right now but showing good development potential.”
(Bob Campbell, 95/100)

“Spicy, cherry and red berry, dusting of sweet cinnamon oak, a little herb and earthiness, but a brighter expression of Martinborough here. Medium bodied, firm almost sappy acidity, grainy lightly drying sandy tannin, plenty of crunch and energy, and a bright strawberried finish of good length, with a slight herbal bitterness. Excellent now, and better again with a couple more years in bottle.”

It seems a bit gentler than previous vintages, but it's still medium to full-bodied, with ample structure to support a decade or more of development. Ripe plum, cola and chocolate notes emerge on the lengthy finish.

94 Punkte James Suckling für den Escarpment Pinot Noir 2015 MartinboroughA lower cropping season with perfect ripening conditions has delivered a polished and seamless Escarpment pinot noir with plenty of red and darker cherry fruit aromas and flavors, some bracken and undergrowth, as well as rose-like florals and woody aromas. The palate has taut and tangy redder cherry fruits, cast against an energetic, fleshy and very composed array of tannins. A terrific wine.”

93 Punkte Winespectator für den Escarpment Pinot Noir 2015 Martinborough“Intense, fragrant and expressive, with black cherry and dried plum notes that mingle with lavender, black tea and clove accents. A hint of dried porcino lingers on the finish. The tannins aren't shy, providing a solid backbone for the flavors.”

Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2015 Martinboroughvon James Suckling:

The top dog is in impressive shape in this perfect harvest, showing plenty of charismatic perfume, spices and ripe cherry fruits, as well as earthy nuances. The palate has a wealth of ripeness. This is an extremely luscious wine, bathed in ripe darker cherry and plum fruit flavors with a wall of plush velvety tannins delivering a long, commanding but caressing palate. Brilliant. Drink now and for some years to come. Screw cap.

96 Punkte Winespectator für den Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2015 Martinborough96 Punkte von Bob Campbell:
“Dense, intense and quite powerful pinot noir, with a core of sweet fruit balanced by moderately rustic tannins to give a drying and lengthy finish. Dark fruits with savoury, dried herb characters adding extra complexity. An heroic pinot noir that needs time to reveal its true potential.”
“This powerful wine is tightly wound yet very expressive, with plenty of torque to the plum and blood orange flavors at the core, slowly revealing details of cedar, tobacco, cumin seed, rosemary and black tea. Everything sings in harmony on the long finish.”

95+ Punkte von Wine Front:
“Kupe comes from Escarpments home turf over on Te Muna Road. Close planted in 1999. 50% new oak. 70% whole bunch. Dark cherry, aniseed, earth, spicy cinnamon oak on show, plenty of spice. Medium bodied, but firmly tannic, with a black tea character, ‘minerality’ aplenty, ginger biscuit, intense and driving, with serious length leaving a fan of tannin in its wake. Needs at least three years in bottle. Serious stuff.”

19,5 Punkte von Raymond Chan:
“This is a succulently rich and vibrant, black-fruited Pinot Noir with layers of spice, oak, dark herbs and whole cluster complexities on a very fine-grained, fresh palate. Abel clone fruit from the Escarpment Te Muna Road vineyard, close-planted in 1999, indigenous yeast fermented with 70% whole bunches.”

93 Punkte bei Parker für den Dog Point Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc 2015 MarlboroughJoe Czerwinski bewertet den Dog Point Section 94 Sauvignon 2015 wie folgt:

Whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in oak, the 2015 Section 94 is still in a bit of youthful funk. Hints of green onion and sweat appear on the nose, but the flavors are settling into a comfortable range of stone fruit, melon and pink grapefruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a rich, almost creamy texture and a long, plush finish. Give it another year or two and drink it over the next 5-6.

91 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc 2018Verkostungsnotiz von Joe Czerwinski vom 29. März 2019:

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc is on the tropical end of the spectrum, with hints of guava, pineapple and nectarine—a real fruit bowl. It's medium-bodied and silky in texture, with a long, flavorful finish.

This partnership between the Sutherland and Healy families shows no sign of growing old or complacent, except perhaps the graying and thinning hair around the table. The wines are as good as ever—maybe even better, as the vines settle into their productive middle years. Still, Ivan Sutherland said, "The last two [vintages] have been challenging." It's worth noting, however, that because of the lower yields they carry, they were able to pick largely before the rains. In 2018, said Sutherland, "The little botrytis that was there, we dropped out because we hand pick." As a final aside, I should point out that the wines age magnificently, as evidenced by the 2006 Section 94 reviewed this issue. We also tasted the 2011 Chardonnay and 2012 Pinot Noir, which were also in fine condition. As they were very close to where previous reviews put them, I haven't re-reviewed them.

November 2017:
Für den JG 2017

Pungent passion fruit and fragrant melon, Tahitian lime citrus, this really takes sauvignon to another place for Marlborough, exposing the edgy, exciting and minerally possibilities whilst embracing the rampant intensity of fruit. Great acid, mouth-watering from front to back. Drink now.

The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc shows hints of green on the nose but sits more firmly in the fig and stone fruit camp. It's medium-bodied, with a white grapefruit element that extends from start to finish, providing a backbone for the riper notes. Clean and refreshing, it should be consumed over the next year or two.

96 Punkte James Suckling für den Dog Point Pinot Noir 2016Verkostungsnotiz von James Suckling:

Impressive structure and concentration. Terrific complexity in the mix here, too. Blueberries and mixed cherries on the nose and palate with a terrific layering of plush, assertive tannins and a fresh, vibrant kick into the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

91 Punkte Wine Advocate für den Dog Point Pinot Noir 2016Verkostungsnotiz von Joe Czerwinski:

The 2016 Pinot Noir needs a year or two to come out of its shell. Subtle cinnamon and clove notes appear on the nose, along with black cherries and cola shadings. Medium to full-bodied, with a rich, velvety mid-palate, it finishes dry and firm.

Dog Point Pinot Noir 2015Verkostungsnotiz von Joe Czewinski vom 18. Februar 2018:

Aged in 40% new French oak, Dog Point's 2015 Pinot Noir is a pristine model of contained power. The cedary notes frame cola and black cherry fruit and channel it down the center of the fairway, a textbook drive designed to set up the second shot. That is to say, better things lay ahead for this medium-bodied wine, once it begins to evolve, loosen the shackles and spread out across the palate a bit. Give it a couple of years, then enjoy its silky-textured charms over the next 5-8 years.

Dog Point Pinot Noir 2015Verkostungsnotiz vom 28. März 2017:

Impressive red-cherry aromas precede great depth and structured, handy tannins that pull real flavors out of the wine and coat the palate. This holds fresh and rich darker cherries and red plums long into the finish. Regal pinot with soul and swagger. Drink now to 2025.
