Weinregion Montalcino:

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pure and classic expression of the vintage with bright fruit tones, wild cherry, toasted nut, blue flower and forest floor. Whereas the other wines in the Poggio Antico portfolio undergo aging in smaller tonneaux, this wine is aged in large Slavonian casks instead. You taste the lift and brightness of the fruit, and it's all quite lovely. Grapes are sourced across a 13-hectare site at a very high 500 meters in elevation. The name of this area is I Poggi, and the soils here are a bit lighter and rockier with both schistous galestro and limestone alberese. I love the delicate approach here, the intensity of those floral aromas, and the silky nature of the mouthfeel. This classic Brunello really stands out.

This is so aromatic and floral with cedar, dried roses, and black cherries. It’s full-bodied, yet so refined and tight with silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Tight and focused. Needs time to open, but shows beautiful finesse and focus. Drink after 2024.

Tenuta Luce La Vite Lucente Toscana IGT 2018

Giacomo Neri and his family have crafted a wine that impresses from the first sip forward (especially when the wine is given ample time to open). The Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova must be treated with patience. and that patience is returned with many great rewards. Blackberry. plum and summer cherry are slowly folded into lasting flavors of spice. leather and beautiful balsam or medical herb. These are always a distinctive signature of this estate. The aromas flow with seamless transitions. and that fluid and ever-changing nature of the bouquet is what helps to build intensity and staying power. Fruit is harvested from a south- and southeast-facing slope at 250 to 300 meters above sea level. The soils are mixed loosely with crushed rock. allowing access to air and moisture. Indeed. pretty mineral accents appear as the wine takes on more air in the glass. What stands out most in this Brunello is the quality of the bouquet that is rigid and firm. yet not excessively so. You feel the structural texture of the wine as it sits firmly over the palate. yet there is mobility and softness to its many moving parts. I tasted this wine at various intervals over a 24-hour period. Tenuta Nuova was bottled in June 2018. and some 70.032 bottles were released.

The purity of fruit in this wine really strikes you with black cherries. combined with sage. lavender and rosemary. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied. yet so tight and polished with incredible tannin structure that gives the wine an endless mouth feel of caressing tannins. acidity and fruit. There’s a fabulous saltiness and oyster-shell undertone to the fruit. Unique. Drinkable already. but this year there’s the structure to last decades.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova was quite restrained at first. requiring time in the glass to fully blossom. as subtle red berry fruits slowly gain volume and are then complemented by sweet red florals with hints of exotic spice. peppery herbs. and dusty minerals. On the palate. silky textures flood the senses with rich red berry fruits and sweet herbal tones. leaving hints of savory spice and minerals in their wake. The finish is long and unexpectedly fresh. showing the first hints of round tannins under a top note of sweet cherry. plum and a hint of black tea. There is so much going on here. yet it is all densely wrapped up in its youthful state.

The Neri family has created a classic expression of Sangiovese from a classic vintage. while remaining faithful to the house style. In a nutshell. these wines always tend to offer dark plum. clove and fig confit over the tiny berry and blue flower aromas you get from the traditionalists. That said. this Brunello needs ample time to open. and I suggest you splash it into the decanter. The Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino (this is the one with the white label) stays safely within your expectation of the vintage with its variety-driven aromas of wild berry. licorice. blue flower and balsam herb. This wine sees fruit sourced from a vineyard on the northeast side of Montalcino. with Galestro soils ranging from 330 to 480 meters above sea level. Some 95.376 bottles were made. It was bottled in June 2019. and it hit the market in January 2020. You might want more from the aromatics (while you wait for the bouquet to come around). but this wine goes gangbusters in terms of mid-palate and overall texture.

There’s beauty and drinkability to this wine that really is enticing with blueberry and cherry aromas. as well as hints of hot stone and licorice. Medium to full body. integrated tannins and a fresh and polished finish. Shows focus and brightness. Very drinkable now. but better in a year or two. Try in 2021.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Casanova di Neru is very pretty. showing bright cherry and strawberry tones. as red florals and dusty spices that rise up from the glass. with just a hint of forest floor. On the palate. silky textures give way to red berry fruits and sweet spices. given lift through vibrant acids. as saline-minerals and hints of fine tannin saturate the senses. It finishes long. juicy. and fresh. with savory spice and residual acids buzzing on the senses while dried red fruits and florals slowly fade. The 2015 Casanova di Neri doesn’t succeed through power; instead it’s a feminine beauty of a wine.

The Le Potazzine 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is immediately bright and energized. The wine is sprightly and lively. This is an elegantly medium-weight wine. but everything is in exactly the right place. Fresh acidity and snappy fruit flavors are followed by lighter touches of rose petal. cardamon. camphor ash and powdered licorice. These aromas are stacked tall and proud. Of special interest is that point of zesty medicinal herb that reminds you of the relatively cool climate and high-altitude positioning of Le Potazzine's vineyards. These special conditions are exactly why this wine performs so nicely in a warm vintage like 2015. The coolness of the growing site offsets the temperatures of the growing season. Some 18.000 bottles will be released in February 2020.

Le Potazzine 's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous. The bouquet is showing an earthy display. with smoky minerals and dark soil tones up front. evolving with time in the glass. as crushed black cherry mixes with wild. savory herbs and dried dusty florals. On the palate. gorgeously ripe red fruits are balanced by a mix of saline-minerals. savory spice and zesty acidity. as fine tannin slowly mounts beneath its pretty inner floral tones. The finish is long with a salty-savory twang of minerals and spice. as hints of hard red candies and a bit of citrus lingers over a core of tannic heft. There is so much to like about the 2015. from its classic and earthy bouquet to its fleshy yet balanced palate and totally classic finish. Simply stunning and so pleasurable.

The Altesino 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows beautiful depth and latitude. with broad fruit aromas of dark cherry and cassis that recall the warmth and golden sunlight of the vintage. The wine is deceivingly streamlined in terms of mouthfeel. but that slim and buttoned-down backbone supports a broad range of flavors and sensations. from lavender essence and camphor ash to moist soil and toasted spice. All of these elements are delivered with impressive harmony and unity. and I expect that this wine will continue on a slow. steady and satisfying aging trajectory over the next 10 years or more. Fruit is sourced from across 21 hectares of vines with tufaceous limestone soils and Alberese rock. which contributes to the freshness and balanced structure of the wine. Casanova di Neri Rosso di Montalcino 2018
92+

Oktober 2020:

There is a lot of buzz surrounding the untapped potential of the Rosso di Montalcino appellation. so when you get a new wine from a headline estate like Casanova di Neri. you can really start to bank on that potential. The hope is that many more will forge forward in this direction. giving greater definition and identity to this Brunello-adjacent entry-level wine. The Casanova di Neri 2018 Rosso di Montalcino Giovanni Neri offers a pure window onto Sangiovese from this hamlet in southern Tuscany. Indeed. the grape here is called Brunello or "Sangiovese Grosso" precisely because it tends to offer dark ("bruno") fruit flavors and rich intensity in its most natural state. This is a naked and transparent wine that allows you to accurately taste the so-called bruno in Sangiovese without too many extra bells or whistles. There are savory and wild characteristics with forest fruit. bitter almond. dried herb and balsam herb. That initial wave of aromatics is followed by tilled earth and subtle spice. The wine is named after Giacomo Neri's father. who shares the name Giovanni with his grandson. This inaugural vintage celebrates the estate's 50th anniversary.

The Mocali 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers good value in a great vintage. I don't think you'll find this level of Brunello quality at this price from any other producer in the appellation. This expression shows soft and dark fruit with plum, black cherry, balsam herb and dried lavender flower. The vines are harvested from a site with Galestro and gravel soils, and you get plenty of Sangiovese purity in this wine.
