Bordeaux

Weinregion Bordeaux:

Aromas and flavors of dark fruit, plums, mushrooms, pine cones, cedar and tile. Full-bodied, yet reserved, with ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate. So layered and beautiful. Hints of crushed stone and deep earth on the finish. Steely at the end. Give this time. Try after 2025.

94 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Trotte Vieille 2019 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni (Vinous) bewertet den Chateau Trotte Vieille 2019 Saint Emilion:
The 2019 Trotte Vieille is burly, deep and powerful, not to mention loaded with character. Espresso, chocolate, iron, leather, licorice and sweet spice add to an impression of virile power and intensity. Big, strapping tannins add to an impression of muscle. The 2019 needs time, but it is a hugely promising wine. It is also one of the most tannic wines in Saint-Émilion.

94 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Trotte Vieille 2019 Saint EmilionNeal Martin (Vinous) zum Chateau Trotte Vieille 2019 Saint Emilion:
The 2019 Trotte Vieille has closed up a little on the nose, yet there are still very attractive black cherries and iodine scents on the nose that gradually unfold with aeration. A touch of fresh fig appears in the background. The well-balanced palate delivers pure blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with graphite and minerals. Almost Left Bank in style, this shows great clarity and fans out wonderfully on the finish. Superb.

The 2019 Berliquet is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, wild berries, sweet spices, violets and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and elegant, with terrific depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, it concludes with a long, mineral finish. It's produced from a 9.5-hectare vineyard that encompasses three soil types: Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau (like its sibling, Château Canon); the slope, characterized by deep clay; and then sandy, colluvial soils at the foot of the slope. Right now it's planted with 70% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc, but the percentage of the latter is increasing as replanting progresses.

The 2019 Batailley has come together beautifully with élevage. There is plenty of power and intensity, but also a greater degree of finesse than in the past. Black cherry, licorice, leather, smoke and spice lend a good deal of gravitas. I would give the 2019 a few years to come together.

95 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Château Batailley 2019 Pauillac Grand Cru ClasseUnd Neal Martin (Vinous) zum Château Batailley 2019 Pauillac Grand Cru Classe:
The 2019 Batailley has an intense bouquet of blackberry, graphite and light tobacco scents, the latter less pronounced than out of barrel. This feels supremely well-defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins and pure black fruit laced with cracked black pepper and graphite, leading to a complex and quite prolonged finish. One of the best Batailleys, maybe the best, in recent years, and a strong follow-up to their splendid 2018. Highly recommended and still one of the best values in Pauillac.

Chateau La Faurie Maison Neuve 2020 Lalande de Pomerol

The 2019 Ormes de Pez has an intense bouquet of blackberry, bilberry and a touch of hoisin, but none of the smoky elements that I commented upon from the barrel sample last year. Nicely delineated and certainly less rustic than past vintages. The palate is finely tuned with a touch of bitter cherry on the entry, quite peppery, and a little stricter than I expected at the moment, leading to a granular, almost truffly finish.

Coming from the Cazes team, the 2019 Château Ormes De Pez is gorgeous and shines in the vintage. Pure crème de cassis, mulberries, leafy herbs, Asian spices, and lead pencil all emerge on the nose, and this medium to full-bodied 2019 has the vintage’s pure, focused, elegant style while staying ripe, supple, and textured. It has a very deep purple-black color and slowly slides out of the glass with spicy notes of Sichuan pepper. cloves and cinnamon stick giving way to a core of perfumed black fruits and florals—blackcurrant cordial. candied violets. blackberry compote. rose hips and black plums—plus suggestions of espresso. damp soil. tar and beef drippings. Powerful. profound wine.

Mouton’s congenial managing director. Philippe Dhalluin. was unfortunately in Napa while I was in Bordeaux in October. so I was hosted by Eric Tourbier—Mouton’s technical director—and Clerc-Milon’s winemaker. Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy. While discussing the particularly abundant range of aroma/flavor compounds I was perceiving in the 2016 reds. Danjoy commented. “When you have a wet spring. you tend to have more aromatic precursors. Also. it was a long maturation period. The vine made a lot of aromatic components. The gap between the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon for ripening was very long. In fact. Cabernet was very late this year. We didn’t know if the Cabernet Sauvignon was going to make it! The big surprise for us was the Cabernet Franc—all of it was delicious. We used it all in the grand vin at Clerc Milon.” When we came to taste Le Petit Mouton and Mouton Rothschild. Eric Tourbier. smiling like the cat that got the cream. said simply. “It was a dry summer. We had very small berries and a good level of ripeness.” He then added. matter-of-factly. “I’ve been at Mouton for 30 years. I think this is my best vintage. The 2016 may be compared to the 1986?” Maybe. but while I’m a huge lover of the incredibly provocative and sometimes formidable 1986 (I had it again just a few weeks ago). I’m thinking this 2016 is going to give a lot more hedonic pleasure in its first 25 years in bottle than the 1986—just coming around now—certainly did.

100 Punkte Vinous | Neal Martin für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2016 PauillacNeal Martin im Januar 2019:

The 2016 Mouton Rothschild bowled me over when I tasted it from barrel. Philippe Dhalluin compares it to the 1986 in terms of intensity of fruit. although there is more maturity and refinement in the tannins apropos of the 2016. Bottled in July 2018. this has an intense bouquet with pixelated black fruit. crushed stone. hints of blue fruit and a touch of India ink. But it is the delineation and focus that take your breath away. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin framing the pure black currant and cassis fruit. The acidity is pitch-perfect. and there is a gentle but insistent grip toward the extraordinarily long finish. Racking my brains to think of another Mouton Rothschild that I have tasted over the last 20 years that was as good as this. I simply cannot come up with one.

100 Punkte James Suckling für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2016 PauillacJames Suckling im Februar 2019:

Dark ruby. purple color. Aromas of blackcurrants. black truffle. crushed stone. licorice and hints of tar. Full-bodied. deep and vertical on the palate. drawing you in and down. The structure is very tannic and powerful. yet the tannins are folded into the wine. One of the most powerful Moutons ever for me. Try after 2027.

James Suckling am 04.04.2017

This is a phenomenal. muscular red that shows incredible power and depth. Full-bodied and with great concentration of tannins but this remains agile and polished. The form to this is stupendous. Such precision and clarity. The new 1986 but better.

Dichter und satter Kern, frische intensiv fruchtige Nase. süssliche kleine Beeren. Schwarzkirsche. 93+ Punkte

Ebenfalls möchte ich meine Empfehlung für die Weingüter aus dem Fronsac aussprechen: Chateau Fontenil, Chateau La Vieille Cure, Chateau Carlmagnus, Chateau La Dauphine, Chateau La Riviere.

An elegant nose of flowers, plums, red berries and cedar. It’s medium-bodied with silky texture. Shows balance and finesse, supported by polished tannins and a pretty drive. Lovely all around. Try after 2023.

Graceful in feel, this delivers cassis and bitter plum notes infused with bergamot and floral hints that all carry through a refined, mineral-tinged finish. A charming, understated wine. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2030.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Dalem has a deep garnet-purple color and compelling notes of blackberry preserves, wild blueberries and ripe, juicy black plums, with hints of dark chocolate, licorice and black olives. The full-bodied palate (15% alcohol) appears bright and fresh with the lively black fruits framed by soft, velvety tannins, finishing long and savory. Nicely done!

92 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Dalem 2018 FronsacAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Dalem 2018 Fronsac wie folgt:
The 2018 Dalem is quite backward on the nose, opening gradually to offer blackberry, licorice and very light menthol aromas; you just want to give the aromatics a polite kick up the backside. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Quite juicy in the mouth, delivering black cherries and cassis toward the well-defined, persistent finish. Excellent, but give it 24 months in bottle, because the nose needs time to find its mojo.

The 2018 Laroque is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel. Silky, polished and refined, the 2018 marks a major step forward for the château. Lavender, spice, blueberry, cedar and mint all grace a Saint-Émilion built more on finesse than power. The long, persistent finish, with its saline accents, adds to the wine's pedigree. The 2018 is beautifully done. The blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Technical Director David Suire gave the 2018 lots 26-29 days on the skins fermented in cement, with manual pump-overs and punch-downs. New oak is 55%

Aromas of ripe blackcurrants, spiced cherries, cloves, praline, tea leaves and crushed gravel. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, tightly knit tannins and fresh acidity. Fleshy, chewy layers lead to a long, mineral finish. Late bottling helped here. Try from 2023.

95 Puntke vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint EmilionLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 Laroque is composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new barriques. The alcohol is 14.5% and the pH is 3.48. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts from the glass with flamboyant notes of stewed black plums, Black Forest cake and boysenberries, plus hints of candied violets, star anise and unsmoked cigars with a playful waft of sassafras. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with juicy black fruits, supported by plush tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

96 Punkte bei Jeb Dunnuck für den Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint EmilionJeb Dunnuck beschreibt den Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint Emilion Grand Cru im April 2019 wie folgt:

This estate is in a cool, limestone terroir on the eastern side of Saint- Emilion, and it's been firing on all cylinders over the past decade, in no small part due to the talented director, David Suire. The 2018 Château Laroque checks in as almost all Merlot (there is 3% Cabernet Franc) that comes from an incredibly strict selection of just 41% of the total production. Brought up in a mix of new and used barrels, it's more about finesse than power, offering a gorgeous perfume of ripe black cherries, mulberries, cassis, violets, spring flowers, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and incredibly elegant on the palate, it builds nicely with time in the glass, has ultra-fine tannins, flawlessly integrated tannins, acidity and fruit, and a great finish. It's as classy as they come. Approachable today with a decant, it will drink nicely for 20 years or more. Readers looking for an impeccably made, classic, high-quality Saint-Emilion that doesn't break the bank should back up the truck for this beauty.

Chateau Laujac 2016 Medoc

92 Sucklingpunkte für den Chateau Laujac 2016 Medoc James Suckling im Januar 2019:
The blackberry and roasted-hazelnut aromas are very intense. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a rich, flavorful finish. Lots going on here. Very well done. A blend of 51 per cent merlot, 42 per cent cabernet sauvignon and seven per cent petit verdot. Better in 2022.

A brilliant success for this property in the ascendant, the 2020 Berliquet opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with hints of warm spices and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's vibrant and dynamic, with polished tannins, a bright spine and a long, elegantly chalky finish. It represents another step up for Berliquet, which will soon benefit from a new winery.

Another brilliant Saint-Emilion in the vintage, the 2020 Château Berliquet is mostly Merlot yet includes close to a third Cabernet Franc, which no doubt contributes to its elegant, finesse-driven, floral character. It's incredibly pure and classy, with notes of red and blue fruits, sappy spring flowers, graphite, and baking spices all emerging on the nose. These carry to a medium-bodied, ultra-fine, pure, seamless 2020 that offers pleasure today and will offer pleasure in 15+ years as well. This wine is never the biggest or richest in a vintage, but it shines for its purity, balance, and elegance. It's beautifully done.

92 The 2020 Trotte Vieille opens in the glass with aromas of sweet dark berries, violets and licorice framed by a generous application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with impressive depth at the core, it's nicely balanced but a little wrapped up in firm, seemingly barrel-derived tannins. Improvements are underway in the vineyards, but for now, the élevage would appear to be this estate's weak link.

98 Punkte von Jeb Dunnuck für den Chateau Trotte Vieille 2020 Saint Emilion Den Chateau Trotte Vieille 2020 Saint Emilion beschreibt Jeb Dunnuck wie folgt:
98 The 2020 Château Trotte Vieille has closed down since I tasted it as a barrel sample in 2021 and needs lots of air, but this is an incredibly gorgeous wine. Its dense purple hue is followed by powerful, inward bouquet of ripe, incredibly pure black and blue fruits, smoky oak, tons of minerality, and a kiss of violets that takes lots of air to shine. The palate is similar in style, with a concentrated, focused, almost austere edge that carries beautiful tannins, awesome extract, flawless overall balance, and a great finish. While it's unquestionably a brilliant wine, it's not for those looking for instant gratification and is much more reserved than the 2019 at this stage. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, and it should have 25 to 30 years of overall longevity.

Fantastic texture and structure to this wine with firm, silky tannins that go on and on. Love the crushed blackberries, blueberries and salt. Floral and mineral character, too. Full and tight with great length. Chewy at the very end, indicating real structure. All about structure and length. 50% cabernet franc, 49% merlot, and 1% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2020 TrotteVieille is quite broody and backward on the nose at first, demanding 15–20 minutes to open. It then reveals blackberry, sea spray/marine scents and hints of crushed chalk and pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm structure, indicating that this is a Saint-Émilion that should be cellared for several years. There is a lovely touch of white pepper and allspice toward the finish. I suspect this is a TrotteVieille that will reward the patient.

92-94 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Trotte Vieille 2020 Saint Emilion, Trottevieille 2020GALLONI zum zum Chateau Trotte Vieille 2020 Saint Emilion:
The 2020 Trotte Vieille is laced with inky, jammy dark fruit, licorice and bittersweet chocolate. This heady, potent Saint-Émilion is not exactly subtle, but it does offer tons of intensity in an opulent, heady style. The only thing missing is a bit of midpalate pliancy and overall persistence.
