Weinregion Bordeaux:
Mit dem Bordeaux oder auch Bordelais verbindet man seit jeher qualitativ hochwertigste Weine und große Namen. Das Bordeaux ist für Qualitätswein das größte zusammenhängende Weinanbaugebiet weltweit. Die über 3000 Weingüter werden "Chateaux" genannt, wobei jedes Chateaux in der Regel nur einen Erstwein produziert, einige noch einen Zweitwein. (Einige Weingüter produzieren Erst- und Zweitwein in rot und weiß). Die Region ist bekannt für trockene, langlebige Rotweine, die je nach Anbaugebiet mal kräftiger oder sanfter ausfallen. Die Weine sind vor allem als gute Essensbegleiter zu verstehen.
Neben den Rotweinen ist das Bordelais auch für seine hochwertigen edelsüßen Sauternes bekannt.

Das Tolle an großen Jahrgängen ist, dass es riesen Überraschungen gibt. So ist es auch beim 2016er Chateau Bibian aus der Appellation Haut-Medoc. Das Chateau Bibian ist als Cru Bourgeois klassifiziert und dies ist auch unser Glück. Würde dieser Wein aus einem anderen Haus kommen wäre er mit Sicherheit nicht zu so einem niedrigen Preis zu haben.

The 2016 Bibian has a tightly-wound bouquet that demands more coaxing than its peers, eventually revealing pure blackberries, raspberry, cedar and light mint aromas. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very pure and polished with some classy new oak assiduously blended. This is a classy offering and one of the best Cru Bourgeois that I have tasted this vintage. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in London.

It maybe does not quite have the persistence of the Les Cruzelles and La Chenade, but I strongly suspect that it will repay a couple of years in bottle. Maybe this has something up its sleeve? Der Chateau Saintayme 2015 von Denis Dourantou ist ein Saint Emilion Grand Cru der aus 100% Merlot kreiert wurde. Er speigelt perfekt das Terroir des Saint Emilion wieder, mit einer satten Frucht von Kirsche, Waldbeeren und zarten Himbeernoten sowie den so typischen mineralisch frischen Anklängen ist er der elegante und Finessenreiche Einstieg in die Weinwelt von Denis Dourantou, der im Pomerol Weine wie den L Eglise Clinet erzeugt. Gnz toll für wie wenig Geld man hier etwas Besonderes im Glas hat. Gerade 2015 ist im Saint Emilion ein Jahrgang voller Frucht und Saftigkeit, dies schmeckt man auch beim Saintayme 2015.

The 2015 Le Gay comes from the 6.5-hectare Pomerol estate, of which 2.09 hectares are currently being restructured. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked from 27 September until 8 October at one degree lower alcohol than Montviel; it has a fragrant bouquet with delineated red cherries, crushed strawberry and hints of vanilla from the 100% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, ripe and rounded in the mouth, very well balanced and very smooth. This just glides across the mouth and once that new oak has been absorbed, this will be a gorgeous Le Gay to behold. Do not overlook this Cru because it has been on a roll in recent years.

Im Gaumen dunkelmalzig, fast nur schwarze Beeren, Mokka und schwarze Pralinen, im Finale Heidelbeeren à gogo. Glücklicherweise habe ich ihn im Saal vom Syndicat in Pomerol nochmals nachverkostet. The extracted style brings out darker shades of fruit and heavy torrefaction notes at the expense of fruit brightness and freshness, which is a stylistic choice. Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, dezente Randaufhellung, reife Pflaumen, Cassis, ein Hauch von Dörrobst, dunkler Nougat, würzige Nuancen. Kraftvoll, holzdominierte Textur, süße Frucht unterlegt, feste Tannine, schokoladig und dicht, braucht seine Zeit, Mokka im Nachhall, deutlich von hohem Cabernet-Anteil geprägt. Vin de Garde.

Unsere Verkostungseindrücke währen der Primeurproben:
Der Chateau Lousteauneuf 2016 aus dem Medoc ist sehr dunkel und konzentriert von der Farbe. Auch die Nase ist recht rauchig und fast schon etwas zu viel des Guten. Insgesamt bleibt die Aromatik dunkel und zeigt wenig zugängliche Frucht, sogar teerige Noten sind vorhanden. Das Tannin ist griffig und erinnert am Gaumen sogar an kräftig geräucherten Schinken. insgesamt eigentlich too much.

Dem JG 2015 vergab Sie wenig schmeichelnde 78 Punkte. Die 90 Punkte für den 2016er ist also eine deutliche Steigerung in der Qualität.

The 2016 Charmail is blended of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot aged for 12 months in 33% new, 33% one-year-old and 33% two-year-old French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it delivers intense scents of crème de cassis, cedar chest and pencil lead with touches of yeast extract and menthol. Medium to full-bodied with a firm frame of chewy tannins and plenty of mint-laced fruit, it finishes just a little woody at this youthful stage but should dial that in beautifully with another year or two in bottle.

The 2016 Brane-Cantenac has been on a roll of late, under the watchful eye of Henri Lurton. This latest bottled vintage is superb. The divine, pure blackberry and bilberry bouquet develops touches of graphite in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, silky-smooth texture and a superb bead of acidity. This is not a powerful Brane-Cantenac, and it is perhaps less austere than I suspected en primeur, but it should drink beautifully over the next three decades. If you have a penchant for traditional claret, it really doesn’t come better than this.

Not bad, but I think the 2015 is better. It feels as if it doesn’t want to go the extra mile like others in Saint-Estèphe.

It will be interesting to see what aging in bottle brings, but one thing is certain; the 2016 La Dame is a stellar wine. Don't miss it.

The taut, muscular, medium to full-bodied palate straddles jaw-dropping intensity and finesse superbly, featuring a solid backbone of ripe tannins and giving a firm frame right through the incredibly long, exquisitely nuanced finish.

The 2016 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc aged in 65% new and 35% two-year-old French oak for 15 months. Bottled in July 2018, it is deep garnet-purple colored and starts off a little closed and reticent, opening out slowly and seductively to reveal beautiful lilacs, rose hip tea, crushed stones and camphor nuances over a core of crème de cassis, kirsch, wild blueberries and mocha plus wafts of incense and wood smoke. The palate is simply electric, charged with an energy and depth of flavors that seem to defy the elegance and ethereal nature of its medium-bodied weight, featuring super ripe, densely pixelated tannins that firmly frame the myriad of fruit and floral sparks, finishing with epic length. Just. Magic.

“Rains on 13th September helped finish the ripening in 2016," winemaker Dominique Arangoits informed me. “There was a little water stress here on the young vines,” he confessed. “It was very important not to overreact to the wet conditions in June, not to de-leaf too much. We have to be more careful than in the past. It was not a very early vintage, but we had to be careful with the Merlot and not to harvest too late. It was very important to keep the fruit and the energy in the wines. In the end, we didn’t even need to fine the wines—this was only the second vintage for this. We started in 2015. In 2017 we will probably not need to fine either. We have our own bottling line, so we have control.”

Arangoits and his team nailed it in 2016. It is also important to highlight that the transformation at Cos d’Estournel since Michel Reybier purchased the château in 2000 is simply incredible. Reybier’s considerable efforts since then in the vineyards and the winery are remarkable. What he has achieved has not only helped to bring the estate up to its true potential but also instilled a pretty impressive batting record when it comes to consistency of quality. The 2016 Cos d’Estournel was a bona fide showstopper out of barrel, the best that I had encountered in over 20 years of visiting the estate during en primeur, so my expectations were piled high when I returned to find out how it performs in bottle. Deep, almost opaque in color, it sports a very intense but broody bouquet with fathomless deep black fruit tinged with blueberry and violet. The aromas almost seem to envelop the senses. The palate is medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannin that I have never witnessed in any other vintage of Cos d’Estournel. There is a beguiling symmetry to this Saint-Estèphe, as well as unerring mineralité. The persistent, tobacco-tinged finish can be felt 60 second after the wine has departed. This is a monumental, benchmark Cos d’Estournel that will give not years but decades of pleasure, though I suspect it will close down for a period in its youth, hence my drinking window. 13.07% alcohol.

The 2016 Pédesclaux is the first vintage to include all four grape varieties planted in the vineyard, according to Emmanuel Cruse. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannin, impressive depth, gentle grip and a killer line of acidity. I adore the harmony and precision of this Pédesclaux, which is probably the best to date. Highly recommended. 13.3% alcohol.

INFO: Unserer Meinung nach handelt es sich beim Chateau Pedesclaux um einen der heissesten Aufsteiger der letzten Jahre. Die Weinberge im Pauillac von Pedesclaux liegen zwischen Lynch Bages, Chateau Lafite Rothschild und Clerc Milon. Also wirklich keine schlechten Nachbarn.
