The 2016 Latour-Martillac has come together very nicely during its aging. Black cherry. plum. leather. licorice. spice and chocolate give the 2016 much of its racy. extroverted feel. Deep. dark and quite powerful. the 2016 is showing beautifully today. The oak could use a bit more time to fully come together. but that is a relatively small critique for a wine that delivers so much pleasure.

I love the deep and complex nose. in which the cassis and mint of cabernet sauvignon are beautifully married to the more generous blackberry of ripe merlot and the vanilla and toasty notes from the oak are marvelously integrated. The 2017 La Garde Blanc has a crisp and lively bouquet with dew-dappled green apples and light grass clipping notes. The palate is well balanced with a citric entry. more apply towards the second half with just a soupçon of salinity on the finish. This is often released at a keen price and will hopefully provide great value for money.

The 2016 Smith Haut Lafitte is flat out stunning. Rich. ample and explosive. the 2016 possesses tremendous energy and tension to play off the wine's dark. rich fruit. I am not sure I have ever tasted a young Smith Haut Lafitte with such extraordinary balance. In 2016. the Grand Vin is tense and pulsing with energy. Hints of lavender. spice. menthol and crème de cassis open up in the glass. but the 2016 stands out for its feel and exceptional harmony. The combined effects of picking a bit early. vinifiying more gently and reducing the impact of oak are having a profound effect at Smith Haut Lafitte. Thinking of some of the highly regarded wines of the last decade here. the 2009 and 2010 in particular. well. the 2016 is on another level. 98 Sucklingpunkte für den Chateau Haut Bailly 2016 Pessac LeognanJames Suckling im Februar 2019:

Wonderful aromas of tobacco. sweet fruit and licorice follow through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins that caress every inch of your palate. Love the length and subtlety to this young wine. Gorgeous. Drink after 2024.

97 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Haut Bailly 2016 Pessac LeognanNeal Martin im Januar 2019:

The 2016 Haut-Bailly was mightily impressive when tasted from barrel. Now. matured in 50% new oak and bottled at the end of April 2018 (they prefer to bottle before spring here). it has a very well defined bouquet of black fruit. graphite. crushed stone and light rose petal aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. This Haut-Bailly feels pure and classic in style. offering well-judged acidity and a sophisticated. quite tensile finish that lingers long in the mouth. I suspect this might close down in a year or two and deserves perhaps 8 to 10 years in bottle to show what it can really do. The best Haut-Bailly in the modern era? For certain.

Incredible depth of fruit to this with a center palate that shows superb character and texture. I love the hazelnut and coffee-bean undertones to the beautiful fruit. which shows great finesse. Full-bodied yet compact and tight. giving a sense of agility and flight to the wine. Extremely tight and polished tannins.

The 2018 Haut-Bailly is blended of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon. 35% Merlot. 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Grapes were harvested September 17 to October 9. and the wine has 14.4% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color. it opens slowly with profound notions of Black Forest cake. crème de cassis. roasted nuts and black olives. unfurling to reveal notions of menthol. crushed rocks. molten licorice and chargrilled meat plus a hint of lilacs. Full-bodied. rich and densely laden with layer upon layer of vibrant black fruits and mineral nuances. it has a solid backbone of firm. velvety tannins and seamless freshness. finishing very long with compelling restraint and exciting energy.

The 2018 Haut-Bailly speaks with real authority and class. Deeply spiced notes lead into a core of red/purplish berry fruit. lavender. licorice. new leather. menthol and tobacco. Vivid and dramatic in bearing. the 2018 possesses striking resonance from start to finish. There is plenty of tannin as well. but it is pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. while the mid-palate and saline-infused finish show terrific freshness as well as purity. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon. 35% Merlot. 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

Jeb Dunnuck bewertet den Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion 2018 Pessac Leognan wie folgt:

The 2018 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a rock star of a wine and is based on a unique blend of 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 29% Merlot that was brought up in 80% new French oak. Offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, chocolate, violets, damp earth, and truffle, it hits the palate with a full-bodied yet almost understated, building style that carries ripe, supple tannins, gorgeous amounts of smoky black fruits, and an endearing, layered, multi-dimensional texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. A dead ringer for a great vintage of Haut-Brion, it is far from unapproachable today yet needs 7-8 years of bottle age for the fireworks to develop and will have 50-years or more of longevity! Hats off to Guillaume Pouthier for a magical, seamless, singular beauty!

The 2018 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is composed of 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot. It was made using 52% whole cluster and has 13.75% alcohol. It was aged in 75% new oak barriques, 16% foudres and 9% amphorae. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little coaxing before bursting from the glass with vibrant scents blackberry preserves, redcurrant jelly, mulberries and Black Forest cake, leading to an undercurrent of pencil lead, black truffles, cast-iron pan and charcoal with an emerging waft of violets. The elegantly crafted, medium-bodied palate dances with red and black fruits before bursting into earth and mineral sparks. It has a sturdy frame of firm, grainy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and savory. The stem tannins lend this wine a firmness and textural interest, which should integrate further with another 5-6 years in barrel, allowing the nuances to shine through even more, then you can continue to enjoy its slow evolution for a further 30+ years

The 2018 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a total knock-out, just as it was from barrel. Soaring in its aromatic intensity, Les Carmes dazzles from the very first taste. Inky red fruits, mocha, new leather, licorice, dried flowers, sage and mint envelop all the senses. Today, the 2018 appears to be slightly closed, but time brings out tons of aromatic energy and nuance. Cabernet Franc plays the leading role, unusual for this part of the region. Franc aromatics and a fair amount of whole cluster savoriness lend energy but also a feeling of richness without weight that is especially appealing. This is a masterpiece from Les Carmes Haut-Brion and Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier.

50 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 47 % Merlot. 2 % Petit Verdot. 1 % Cabernet Franc.
