Der 2022er ist eine Co-Fermentierung von 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon und 26% Merlot mit 70% Stielen, die sechs Wochen auf den Schalen reiften. Auf dem gleichen Niveau wie der perfekte 2016er, ist dies ein außergewöhnliches Geschmackserlebnis. In der Farbe undurchsichtig, bietet der Wein ein Füllhorn an Früchten, Weihrauch, Curry, Blumen und Rauch. Der Gaumen ist noch besser mit seinen endlosen Schichten von nahtlosen Früchten, die Ihre Sinne mit ihrer Darstellung von salzigen Gewürzen, zerstoßenen Steinen, Kernobst, Beeren und weißem Pfeffer umschmeicheln. Der 2023er Les Carmes Haut-Brion, der zu 60 % aus ganzen Trauben besteht, reifte zu 70 % in neuen Eichenfässern, Amphoren und Foudres. Er hat ein hübsches, zartes Bouquet, das sich im Glas entfaltet, vor allem mit Noten von schwarzen Früchten, Himbeeren und leichtem Geröll, dazu ein Hauch von Curryblättern. Mit der Zeit kommen leichte Meeresnoten zum Vorschein. Am Gaumen ist er mittelkräftig mit geschmeidigen Tanninen, samtiger Textur und Noten von roten und schwarzen Früchten. Im Abgang zeigen sich Anklänge von Nelken und weißem Pfeffer, die den ganzen Trauben zu verdanken sind. Ziemlich leicht und detailreich. Wenn ich etwas zu bemängeln hätte, würde ich mir etwas mehr Biss wünschen, eine Eigenschaft, die ich bei anderen Jahrgängen finde. Dennoch ein stilvoller und faszinierender Les Carmes Haut-Brion.

Der Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2023 ist eine Cuvée aus 50 % Cabernet Franc, 30 % Cabernet Sauvignon und 20 % Merlot und weist einen pH-Wert von 3,62 auf. Er wurde zu 60 % aus ganzen Trauben vergoren und reift zu 70 % in neuen Eichenfässern, zu 20 % in neuen 18-hl-Eichenfässern und zu 10 % in Amphoren. Er beginnt zunächst etwas düster mit Noten von Teer und feuchter Erde. Nach leichtem Schwenken entströmen dem Glas reine, klar definierte Noten von saftigen schwarzen Kirschen, Johannisbeerpastillen, reifen Brombeeren und Lakritz, gefolgt von Anklängen von Pfingstrosen, nassem Schiefer und schwarzen Oliven. Am Gaumen ist er mittelkräftig, luftig und erfrischend, mit einem soliden Rückgrat aus sehr feinkörnigen Tanninen und rassiger Säure, die die makellosen Aromen schwarzer Früchte untermauern, und einem langen, mineralischen Abgang. Dies ist ein verführerischer 2023er mit reifen Noten von schwarzen und roten Beeren und einer paradoxen Luftigkeit – ikonoklastisch, im besten Sinne des Wortes!

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it gives notes of kirsch, black raspberries and black plums with touches of cassis, violets, chocolate box and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, firm, grainy and lively with loads of layers and a long, well-poised finish.

Plum, blood orange, spice, mocha and dried herbs lend an exotic quality that is so alluring. The 2019 is a mysterious, totally seductive wine that no one who is serious about Bordeaux will want to miss. To be sure, Les Carmes is far from typical, but it is incredibly unique. Its longevity is likely to be measured in multiples of decades. Quite simply, I loved it.

The 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has turned out very well in bottle. Mingling aromas of plums and cassis with notions of blood orange, warm spices and new oak, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit that's framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it's reminiscent of a more giving, extroverted version of Pouthier's superb 2016. As is now the rule at this address, some whole bunches were retained during maceration, and the wine saw a long élevage in a variety of vessels, from classic 225-liter Bordeaux barriques to foudres and amphorae. The blend is dominated by 42% Cabernet Franc, complemented by 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot.

Absolutely pure gold and reminding me of the 2009 (or is it the 2010?), the 2020 Château Smith Haut Lafitte sports a dense purple hue to go with incredible aromatics of blackberries, blueberries, scorched earth, wood smoke, and acacia flowers. One of the most concentrated, rich, and sexy wines in the vintage, this massive and extraordinarily opulent 2020 shows the vintage's pure, elegant profile yet backs it up with sensational levels of fruit and texture. Based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it already offers pleasure given its wealth of fruit, but it deserves 7-8 years of bottle age and will evolve for 40-50 years. Not enough can be said about the quality of these wines. Bravo to Florence and Daniel Cathiard, as well as to director Fabien Teitgen, for another incredible achievement.

The 2020 Haut-Brion is more aromatically demonstrative than La Mission Haut-Brion, bursting with aromas of blackberries and raspberries mingled with licorice, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's rich and layered, with an enveloping core of fruit that's girdled by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin. Despite checking in at a similarly lofty alcoholic degree to the 2019, its more granular tannic profile tempers the vintage's sweetness of fruit and lends the wine a more classically proportioned, and more classically structured, profile.

An absolute blockbuster on the palate, this structured, full-bodied, massively concentrated Pessac builds incrementally, with ultra-fine tannins, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a great, great finish. Richer and more concentrated than both the 2018 and 2019 (there are some similarities to 2010), this is a legend in the making. The blend is 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc, all of which will spend 15-18 months in 77% new French oak. Zur Feier seiner 40. Ernte an der Spitze des Weinguts hat Olivier Bernard einen Wein mit großem Potenzial geschaffen. Der 2022 Domaine de Chevalier verströmt Aromen von dunklen Wildbeeren, Gewürzen, Rauch und Lakritz, umrahmt von einem dezenten Hauch neuen Holzes. The wine blends 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. 14.45% ABV, 3.83 pH. Harvesting took place August 29 - September 15. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare, with 50% of the harvest placed into the Grand Vin. This is not only in competition for wine of the vintage, it is one of the best vintages of Haut Brion ever produced. Coming from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Château Pape Clement from Bernard Magrez is a gorgeous wine that's performing even better from bottle than barrel, which is always a good sign. Deep ruby/purple, with stunning crème de cassis and blackberry fruits as well as kaleidoscope-like notes of graphite, scorched earth, smoke, violets, and spring flowers, it offers full-bodied richness yet stays light on its feet, graceful, and almost ethereal on the palate, with integrated acidity and building yet seamless tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon really sings at this point, and there's almost a Médoc-like regalness here. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant 2005 (it also has similarities to the 2016), it will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for 30+ years.

The 2019 Pape-Clément was a real show-stopper from barrel. Now in bottle since summer 2021, it has a more refined nose that I feel is perhaps just a little closed in as it approaches its first winter. Aeration reveals some lovely rose petal and incense aromas (there’s something almost Burgundian, Morey-Saint-Denis–like about its purity). The palate is extremely well balanced with velvety tannins and perfectly judged acidity. The oak (65% new, in the form of 400-liter barrels that have been employed since 2018) are beautifully integrated. This fans out wonderfully on the finish. One of the finest releases from Pape-Clément in recent years.

Offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, chocolate, violets, damp earth, and truffle, it hits the palate with a full-bodied yet almost understated, building style that carries ripe, supple tannins, gorgeous amounts of smoky black fruits, and an endearing, layered, multi-dimensional texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. A dead ringer for a great vintage of Haut-Brion, it is far from unapproachable today yet needs 7-8 years of bottle age for the fireworks to develop and will have 50-years or more of longevity! The 2016 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion comes from vines located in the clos over towards Martillac, rather than the vines in the original Les Carmes Haut-Brion vineyard in the Bordeaux suburbs, known as "Le Clos des Carmes Haut-Brion" up until the 2013 vintage. It is a blend of 51% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvigon and 1% Petit Verdot, matured in 30% new oak and the remainder one year old barrels. This includes 25% whole berry fruit. It offers plenty of brambly black fruit on the nose, crushed violets, fresh fig and a touch of spice that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, neatly integrated oak, a little plushness on the entry thanks to the Merlot, and then it dovetails into a more structured, gently grippy, chalk-textured finish with attractive black fruit. Give this two or three years in bottle just to shave off a little abrasiveness and you will have a fine Pessac-Léognan.

The 2019 is a mysterious, totally seductive wine that no one who is serious about Bordeaux will want to miss. To be sure, Les Carmes is far from typical, but it is incredibly unique. Its longevity is likely to be measured in multiples of decades. Quite simply, I loved it.

Mingling aromas of plums and cassis with notions of blood orange, warm spices and new oak, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit that's framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it's reminiscent of a more giving, extroverted version of Pouthier's superb 2016. As is now the rule at this address, some whole bunches were retained during maceration, and the wine saw a long élevage in a variety of vessels, from classic 225-liter Bordeaux barriques to foudres and amphorae. The blend is dominated by 42% Cabernet Franc, complemented by 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot.

Jeder redet zwar über das Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion, aber ein weiterer Teil der unglaublichen Erfolgsgeschichte die hier im Zusammenhang steht, haben noch zu wenige auf dem Radar! Diesen ebenso unglaublich guten Wein, der sich von einem Hoch zum anderen hangelt, dürfen Sie einfach nicht verpassen. Er wird nicht en Primeur vermarktet und tritt demzufolge erst später in Erscheinung, dennoch wird er immer zu den Primeursproben gezeigt. Oft verlassen wir das Weingut mit einem breiten Grinsen und freuen uns auf den nächsten Release des C des Carmes. Der 2022 C Des Carmes Haut-Brion besteht zu 60 % aus Cabernet Sauvignon, 39 % Merlot und 1 % Petit Verdot. 30 % der Trauben wurden als Ganztrauben vergoren, der Wein reifte 12 Monate in neuem Foudre (ein kleiner Teil in gebrauchten Barriques) und anschließend vier Monate in Betontanks. Da die Reben jünger sind, ist der Stielanteil geringer, dafür der Cabernet-Anteil höher. Sein tiefes Rubin/Purpur leuchtet, gefolgt von einem würzigen, pfeffrigen Bouquet dunkler Beeren- und Pflaumenfrüchte, Frühlingsblumen, Tabakblatt und einer schönen Mineralität. Mittel- bis vollmundig, konzentriert, elegant und charakterstark – ein einzigartiger Pessac-Léognan mit zwei Jahrzehnten Lagerpotenzial.

Der 2022 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion, hauptsächlich aus 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon von kiesigen Böden, ruht vor der Freigabe ein Jahr auf der Flasche. Mit 13,3 % Alkohol wurde der Gehalt durch 30 % Ganztraubenvergärung per Infusion statt Mazeration gesenkt, wobei ein „French Press“-Verfahren eingesetzt wurde. Er reifte ein Jahr in Barriques und ein Jahr in Foudres. In der Nase zeigen sich Aromen von Brombeere, Nelke und Curryblatt sowie etwas mehr Minze als zuvor. Am Gaumen wirkt er mittelkräftig, mit leicht kalkigen Tanninen und Frische durch die Ganztrauben. Ziemlich linear und gegen Ende etwas syrah-ähnlich – ein reizvoller Wein, der in den nächsten 12–20 Jahren reifen wird.

Ich bin gespannt, wie viel „Babyfett“ er im nächsten Jahr verliert, wenn er sich von der Abfüllung erholt. Selbst heute beeindruckt der 2022er enorm. Dunkle Kirschen-/Pflaumenfrucht, Gewürze, getrocknete Kräuter und Menthol öffnen sich mit etwas Luft. Ich würde keine Flasche so bald öffnen.

Broad-shouldered and muscular, its rich, powdery tannins are already seamlessly integrated; and though it's labeled at 15% alcohol, far higher than the great vintages of yesteryear, it avoids any sense of over-ripeness.

It's very much in the focused, elegant, yet still concentrated and powerful style of the vintage. It will need a solid decade of cellaring, but it’s a brilliant wine.

50 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 47 % Merlot. 2 % Petit Verdot. 1 % Cabernet Franc. Extrem dunkles Purpur mit lila und violetten Reflexen. Extrem dunkelbeerig mit vielen Rauchnuancen. Lakritze. dunklen Edelhölzer. Guinness-Biermalz und Black Currant im ersten Ansatz. Nach ein paar Minuten kommt eine feine Zimtnuance zum Tragen. Heidelbeerenmark und Tahiti-Vanilleschote. Das Aromenpaket ist in sich gekehrt und bleibt noch etwas im Innern obwohl der Wein gleichfalls auch verschwenderische Ansätze zeigt. Ausgeglichene. royale Adstringenz aufweisend. cremiges Extrakt mit massiver. aber nicht überladener Konzentration. bleibt blaubeerig und hat in sich eine nicht erklärbare Faszination. Trotz der absolut modernen Vinifikation bleibt er irgendwie klassisch. Nach dem Spucken blieb er minutenlang im Gaumen zurück. Und mir blieb dabei förmlich die Spucke weg. Das war mein grösster Pape-Clément als Jungweinprobe. Fünf Mal verkostet. Er ist momentan der beste Pessac-Léognan. Mit der Gefahr. dass ihn Haut-Brion oder Mission einmal ein- möglicherweise überholen werden. Aber vor 20 Jahren wird dies nicht der Fall sein!
