The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc was cropped at 43hl/ha and will spend 18 months in barrel. It has a very composed bouquet of green apple, kiwi fruit, crushed rock and dried white flower aromas. There is nothing extravagant on the nose, but it is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, displaying light honeyed notes on the entry mixed with chamomile and almond and hints of marzipan. Very harmonious from start to finish, this is a refined and classy Domaine de Chevalier Blanc.

The 2020 Haut-Bailly opens in the glass with attractive aromas of cassis, sweet berries, loamy soil, violets and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's a concentrated, rather broad-shouldered wine built around a chassis of firm, powdery tannin that asserts itself on the finish. Haut-Bailly once rivaled Haut-Brion for the title of Pessac's most elegant wine, and I would love to see the team here ease off extraction, but this remains a strong effort that will reward patience.

The 2020 Château Haut-Bailly is a quintessential expression of this terroir and shines for its incredible purity, balance, and elegance. Revealing a ruby/purple hue as well as a terrific bouquet of ripe red and black fruits, Asian spices, smoked tobacco, and leafy herbs, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, and a layered, seamless mouthfeel. Reminding me slightly of the 2016 with its pure, balanced, classical style, give bottles just 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two to three decades. President and CEO Véronique Sanders continues to do incredible job at this Château, and you won’t find a more classy, elegant wine out there.

Looking at the reds, the 2020 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion is flat-out stunning and unquestionably a great wine in its own right. Cassis, black raspberries, tobacco, and sandalwood are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with incredible elegance, fine tannins, and a great finish. In general, 2020 isn't the best vintage for the second wines, but you wouldn't know that from tasting this beauty.

It rolls effortlessly out of the glass with seducing notes of warm black plums, black cherry compote and blackberry pie, plus suggestions of lavender, crushed rocks and underbrush with a hint of sassafras. The medium-bodied palate is delicately played and refreshing, offering lots of soft-spoken black fruit and earthy layers with a soft texture and seamless acidity, finishing with a spicy kick.

Straight-up classic notes of honeyed pineapple, chalky minerality, minty herbs, and spicy nuances emerge from the 2020 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc, a deep, richly textured, medium to full-bodied white with nicely integrated acidity, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's one of the finest whites I've tasted from this château and is well worth seeking out. I like it today, yet it should have 10-12 years or more of prime drinking as well.

One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. Wafting from the glass with arresting aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with violets, cigar box and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, concentrated mid-palate framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe acids, and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. This rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates. The blend contains fully 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and attained a modest 13.4% alcohol.

There is tremendous density and power that belies the 12.8% alcohol, but then again, that can be the magic of Bordeaux. Classic Lafite red plum fruit, spice, cedar, licorice and rose petal linger on the striking, persistent finish.

21 Jan, 2022 – This is incredibly complex, with all the cabernet descriptors, from mint and lead pencil to blackberry, blackcurrant and menthol. It changes all the time in the glass, just as in the nose. Yet, it remains cool and classy. Full-bodied with very fine, tight tannins that run the length of the wine, carrying on and on and on. Well-framed and compact wine. Never-ending procession of currant, berry and black cherry fruit, together with licorice, earth and just a hint of black truffle. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Give this until 2028 to show its true greatness.

The 2019 Château Mouton Rothschild is based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, and it hit a relatively normal alcohol level of 13.5%, which is higher than the 2009 and shows the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon in the vintage. It shows the new, modern style of Bordeaux in its purity, elegance, and finesse while still being an incredibly concentrated Pauillac, and where some vintages of Mouton can just about jump out of the glass, this is a more seamless, streamlined, elegant beauty that builds with time in the glass and is just about impossible to fault. Gorgeous crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, forest floor, licorice, damp earth, and graphite, as well as some espresso nuances, emerge on the nose, and it's rich, medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This is pure haute couture in Bordeaux that unquestionably offers pleasure today (again, just about all modern Bordeaux from a great vintage offer pleasure in their youth) but will require a solid decade to hit maturity, and it should evolve for 20, 30, 40 years or more. This is not an unformed beast of wine that demands bottle age, and I suspect it will have a broad, forgiving drink window that consumers will love.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is the most dramatic of the Médoc first growths, soaring from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and violets mingled with rich aromas of cedar, cigar wrapper, licorice, loamy soil and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and powerful, with huge levels of concentration and an ineffably complete, seamless profile, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Plenty of ripe tannin is hidden by its ample core of fruit, and despite its youthful polish, this will require plenty of bottle age to realize all its potential. This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot tastes in many respects like the 2016 Mouton's more sun-kissed cousin.

Complex, elegant and utterly compelling, this is a brilliant Bordeaux that anyone with the requisite disposable income is going to want to own.

Cool and energetic, yet reserved. Zen-like. 37% of the production and 90% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. So well balanced that you can drink it now, but this is one to leave for a decade and more. Ethereal.

The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, filigreed tannins that envelop the senses. Flavors of blackberry and bilberry, tinged with sea salt and black pepper, merge into a slightly more sensual finish that is still quintessentially Margaux. I used the word "effortless" in my note from barrel, and that rings true in bottle, though maybe there is now even more persistence. Quite stunning.

Würziges Bouquet, tintige Anflüge und deutlich florale Noten, nicht so reserviert wie der Les Forts de Latour, aber auch nicht unbedingt kommunikativ. Im Gaumen zeigt er dann fraglos Grösse, schwarzer Pfeffer, Pumpernickelbrot, Heidelbeeren und Cassis, die Adstringenz ist verlangend, er zeigt aber auch eine schier feminine Noblesse, nachhaltig, mit mittlerem Druck. Wenn man Latour auf dem Etikett liest und den Jahrgang 2015 vor sich hat, dann erfüllt er vielleicht (momentan) nicht ganz die Erwartungen. Man hat hier aber auch das positive Gefühl, dass er in seiner Evolution noch rückständig ist und sicherlich noch zulegen kann/könnte. 19/20 2026 – 2060

Das Fazit der Domaine: "Viel Rundheit und Freundlichkeit in diesem Wein. Er umschmeichelt Sie im Mund und verführt Sie sofort mit seiner Ausgewogenheit. Es ist schwer, das Terroir von Nuits zu erraten... Vielleicht die Nase, die ein wenig wilder ist als die von Vosne."

Based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, the deep purple-hued 2020 Château Cos D'Estournel has, dare I say, an almost Lafite-like sense of elegance and class, offering gorgeous cassis and darker currants fruits as well as tobacco, lead pencil, acacia flowers, and graphite. Hitting 13.46 alcohol, with a pH of 3.9 and an IPT of 80, this flawless, full-bodied, incredibly elegant Saint-Estèphe has silky tannins, perfect balance, and a great, great finish. It will need a decade of cellaring to hit its prime drink window. Of the trilogy of 2018, 2019, and 2020, it's clearly my favorite (that’s splitting hairs), with a similarity to the 2016, and will most likely merit another point at maturity.

While it isn't anywhere near as extreme as the 2009, the 2020 does appear to mark a move back toward a more turbo-charged style after Cos d'Estournel's shift toward elegance, exemplified by the brilliant 2016—but perhaps that's merely an illusion created by the vintage?

The blend is 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc, all of which will spend 15-18 months in 77% new French oak. Hide bottles for a decade, and it should evolve for 50-75 years.

I was blown away by the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chaupin, a 100% Grenache release that comes almost exclusively from the Chaupin lieu-dit in the northern part of the appellation. It's never as inky-hued or powerful as the Vieilles Vignes but always screams Grenache with its sexy, ripe, seamless, and remarkably elegant style. The 2020 offers a translucent ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackberries, black raspberries, peppery garrigue, herbes de Provence, and flowers, and it opens up nicely with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I finished my note with "a Grenache lover's dream." This is up with the finest vintages produced and will evolve for 15+ years.

Penfolds 707 Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra 2021

Der 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 stammt aus Coonawarra, Barossa Valley und Wrattonbully und reift 16 Monate lang in amerikanischen Eichenfässern (100% neu). In der Nase zeigt sich der Wein aromatisch zurückhaltend, aber im Mund entfalten die Tannine (und dann die Früchte) ihre volle Kraft. Dies ist ein kraftvoller Wein, der, um ehrlich zu sein, bei seiner Veröffentlichung wenig Freude bereitet. Der klare Vorbehalt, den ich an dieser Stelle betonen möchte, ist, dass alter Bin 707 – wir sprechen von 20 oder 30 Jahren – ein anmutiger, kraftvoller, aufregender Wein ist. Und 2021 war ein wunderschönes Jahr: lange, kühle und gleichmäßige Wachstumsbedingungen, sodass die in diesem Jahr produzierten Weine (insbesondere aus Südaustralien) elegant und ausgewogen sind. Die Frucht hier spricht von ihren Jahrgangsursprüngen; jedoch bleibt das Eichenholz zu diesem frühen Zeitpunkt ein großer Teil der Geschichte. Der „Plus“-Teil der Bewertung ist ein sehr lauter Indikator für sein zukünftiges Potenzial. 14,5% Alkohol, versiegelt unter Naturkork.

Ich liebe diesen Wein einfach, so eingebettet und jung, aber sein Potenzial ist klar erkennbar. Er nimmt das Herz des Cabernet Sauvignon und destilliert es, intensiviert es, wickelt das Minzblatt und die Lakritze ein und hebt es auf ein Bett aus gemessener Säure und purem Cassis. Feine Tannine - es gibt viele davon, aber man spürt sie kaum. Nicht geklärt und nicht filtriert. Ein Jahrgang mit kleinen Beeren und dicken Schalen, daher haben sie die Mazerationszeit verkürzt, um den Schwerpunkt auf diese Reinheit des Ausdrucks zu legen. Es gab keinen Bin 707 oder 169 im Jahr 2020 wegen der Waldbrände, daher ist dies der erste in zwei Jahren. 100% neue amerikanische Eiche, im Fass vergoren. Peter Gago Chefwinzer.

Dies ist ein sehr feiner 707. Oft etwas schwerfällig, aber dieser ist raffinierter, als ich ihn in Erinnerung habe. Tannine wie eine Gewehrmündung mit einem Hauch von stählernem Willen. Wie ein Film aus legierten Kugellagern, der über den großzügig gewichteten Gaumen rollt und dabei Jod, Kräuterstrauß, eine Spur Tapenade und Cassis an den richtigen Stellen liefert. Reich und kraftvoll, aber gleichzeitig detailliert und herzhaft. Die Saftigkeit der Frucht überwindet mühelos das Übermaß an Eichenholz und verheißt eine sehr vielversprechende Zukunft. Ein wunderbarer Wein in der Entstehung. Am besten nach 2027.
