Kumeu River 2021 Rays Road Chardonnay Hawks Bay

This is a fuller style from Hawke’s Bay and quite different from the rest of the Kumeu range of chardonnays. Bold, ripe peaches dominate the nose and palate. The texture is impressively silky and smooth. Very fleshy and complete. Impressive. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

“The sweet and fragrant spices and perfumed pinot noir fruits, a hallmark of this vineyard, are alluring and the depth that follows makes for an engaging. convincing pinot noir. The palate has succulent, attractive bright red cherry fruit aromas and the palate has a very focused, powerful yet elegant feel. and a feathery and ethereal finish.”

94 Punkte Winespectator für den Escarpment Pinot Noir Kiwa 2015 Martinborough“Dusty white pepper and rose petal notes are aromatic, leaping out of the glass to complement the dense core of mineral-laced dark fruit flavors, with plenty of anise and nutmeg details. The intensity gains momentum on the finish, which is expressive and generous.”

“Scented. enticing pinot noir with a mix of floral, cherry and berry flavours and a suggestion of spice all nicely restrained by fine, drying tannins. A little closed right now but showing good development potential.”(Bob Campbell. 95/100)

“Spicy, cherry and red berry, dusting of sweet cinnamon oak, a little herb and earthiness, but a brighter expression of Martinborough here. Medium bodied, firm almost sappy acidity, grainy lightly drying sandy tannin, plenty of crunch and energy, and a bright strawberried finish of good length, with a slight herbal bitterness. Excellent now, and better again with a couple more years in bottle.”

This has hit an impressive trajectory with very well-curated, fresh blueberry, red-cherry and black-cherry aromas, swathed in sweet baking spices and fresh-tilled earth. The palate has sleekly defined tannins, carrying intense, ripe blueberry and red-cherry flavors, amid deeply buried spice. Impressive, this is the finest Aroha to date. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This is really seductive on the nose and already gives an impression of plushness with regal, violet-like florals, plums and mulberries in abundance and all nicely ripe. Additional notes of cedary oak and freshly tilled earth. The palate is full and fleshy and the tannins compose nicely as it builds. Cabernet takes the lead through the long, impressive finish. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Long aging potential.

Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2015 Martinboroughvon James Suckling:

The top dog is in impressive shape in this perfect harvest, showing plenty of charismatic perfume, spices and ripe cherry fruits, as well as earthy nuances,.The palate has a wealth of ripeness. This is an extremely luscious wine, bathed in ripe darker cherry and plum fruit flavors with a wall of plush velvety tannins delivering a long, commanding but caressing palate. Brilliant. Drink now and for some years to come. Screw cap.

96 Punkte Winespectator für den Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2015 Martinborough96 Punkte von Bob Campbell:

“Dense, intense and quite powerful pinot noir, with a core of sweet fruit balanced by moderately rustic tannins to give a drying and lengthy finish. Dark fruits with savoury. dried herb characters adding extra complexity. An heroic pinot noir that needs time to reveal its true potential.”
“This powerful wine is tightly wound yet very expressive, with plenty of torque to the plum and blood orange flavors at the core, slowly revealing details of cedar, tobacco, cumin seed, rosemary and black tea. Everything sings in harmony on the long finish.”

95+ Punkte von Wine Front:
“Kupe comes from Escarpments home turf over on Te Muna Road. Close planted in 1999. 50% new oak. 70% whole bunch. Dark cherry. aniseed, earth, spicy cinnamon oak on show, plenty of spice. Medium bodied, but firmly tannic, with a black tea character, ‘minerality’ aplenty, ginger biscuit, intense and driving, with serious length leaving a fan of tannin in its wake. Needs at least three years in bottle. Serious stuff.”

19.5 Punkte von Raymond Chan:
“This is a succulently rich and vibrant, black-fruited Pinot Noir with layers of spice, oak, dark herbs and whole cluster complexities on a very fine-grained, fresh palate. Abel clone fruit from the Escarpment Te Muna Road vineyard, close-planted in 1999, indigenous yeast fermented with 70% whole bunches.”
