'Latitude' bedeutet übersetzt 'Breite'. was sehr gut den reichhaltigen und charmanten Stil dieses Champagners beschreibt. Das Lesegut setzt sich aus Chardonnay-Trauben mehrerer Lagen zusammen. die sich im Süden von Vertus (quasi auf dem gleichen Breitengrad. auch daher der Name Latitude) befinden. Die hier vorherrschende Wärme und vergleichsweise hohe Anzahl an Sonnenstunden ermöglicht Jahr für Jahr die Lese von sehr gut ausgereiftem Traubenmaterial. In Verbindung mit einer 24 Monate dauernden Hefelagerung und einer zurückhaltenden Dosage von nur 4g/l kann dieser Champagner sehr gut die verbindende Typizität der Lagen hervorbringen.

Im Glas offenbart der Latitude ein lebhaftes Zitronengelb. In der Nase beginnt er mit klaren. kräuterwürzigen und auch zitrigen Aromen. Nach kurzer Zeit werden Sie dann auch Eindrücke von Cassis und feine Blütentöne wahrnehmen sowie herbe Noten. die an Chinin erinnern. Am Gaumen ist dieser Champagner absolut präzise und klar. Nach kurzer Zeit baut er dann seine namengebende Breite und Reichhaltigkeit auf. die er den sonnenverwöhnten Trauben verdankt. Insgesamt ein festlicher Vertreter der Blanc de Blancs. der dank seiner Preisgestaltung zugleich auch überzeugende Argumente in dieser Hinsicht mit sich bringt.

As usual. this is a classy introduction to the Larmandier-Bernier range.

The non-vintaged von Buhl Brut Réserve is a deliciously fine and fruity cuvée from 80% Pinot Blanc and 20% Chardonnay. from the 2013 and 2014 vintages, of which the 2013 was aged on the full less until December 2014. Only the first 50% of the pressing was used for the base wine that was fermented in 90% stainless steel and 10% in 2.400-liter barrels. Bottled in January 2015 and disgorged already in late October, this German Sekt offers a bright, fresh, pure and subtle yet deep and complex bouquet of white and red-skinned fruits, along with some brioche, potted ginger flavors and a dash of lemon-grapefruit juice. Full-bodied, round and intense on the palate, this is an almost rich, very fruity and powerful sparkling wine with a a creamy texture, as well as very good structure that balances the richness and power very well. This Blanc de Blancs is very promising, but shouldn't be consumed before end of 2016. It is provided with a very good length and is definitely fuller, slightly sweeter and more complex than the 2014 Riesling Brut. Really promising. 60.000 bottles produced.

The intense. mineral. savory profile recalls the 1986. but the 2016 has more grace. inner sweetness and sophistication than that wine. Even so. the 2016 is going to need at least a number of years in bottle before it starts drinking well. although it won't be the bruiser the 1986 remains to this day. This is breathtaking wine from Mouton. Tecnical Director Philippe Dhalluin and his team.

The 2016 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon. 15% Merlot. 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. with the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vinified together. It has a very deep purple-black color and slowly slides out of the glass with spicy notes of Sichuan pepper. cloves and cinnamon stick giving way to a core of perfumed black fruits and florals—blackcurrant cordial. candied violets. blackberry compote. rose hips and black plums—plus suggestions of espresso. damp soil. tar and beef drippings. Medium-bodied. the palate is very firmly structured and jam-packed with latent energy about to burst. offering superbly ripe. grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the intense floral and black fruit layers and finishing very long and very minerally. Powerful. profound wine.

Mouton’s congenial managing director. Philippe Dhalluin. was unfortunately in Napa while I was in Bordeaux in October. so I was hosted by Eric Tourbier—Mouton’s technical director—and Clerc-Milon’s winemaker. Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy. While discussing the particularly abundant range of aroma/flavor compounds I was perceiving in the 2016 reds. Danjoy commented. “When you have a wet spring. you tend to have more aromatic precursors. Also. it was a long maturation period. The vine made a lot of aromatic components. The gap between the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon for ripening was very long. In fact. Cabernet was very late this year. We didn’t know if the Cabernet Sauvignon was going to make it! The big surprise for us was the Cabernet Franc—all of it was delicious. We used it all in the grand vin at Clerc Milon.” When we came to taste Le Petit Mouton and Mouton Rothschild. Eric Tourbier. smiling like the cat that got the cream. said simply. “It was a dry summer. We had very small berries and a good level of ripeness.” He then added. matter-of-factly. “I’ve been at Mouton for 30 years. I think this is my best vintage. The 2016 may be compared to the 1986?” Maybe. but while I’m a huge lover of the incredibly provocative and sometimes formidable 1986 (I had it again just a few weeks ago). I’m thinking this 2016 is going to give a lot more hedonic pleasure in its first 25 years in bottle than the 1986—just coming around now—certainly did.

The 2016 Mouton Rothschild bowled me over when I tasted it from barrel. Philippe Dhalluin compares it to the 1986 in terms of intensity of fruit. although there is more maturity and refinement in the tannins apropos of the 2016. Bottled in July 2018. this has an intense bouquet with pixelated black fruit. crushed stone. hints of blue fruit and a touch of India ink. But it is the delineation and focus that take your breath away. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin framing the pure black currant and cassis fruit. The acidity is pitch-perfect. and there is a gentle but insistent grip toward the extraordinarily long finish. Racking my brains to think of another Mouton Rothschild that I have tasted over the last 20 years that was as good as this. I simply cannot come up with one.

This is a phenomenal. muscular red that shows incredible power and depth. Full-bodied and with great concentration of tannins but this remains agile and polished. The form to this is stupendous. Such precision and clarity. The new 1986 but better.

Der Cardinale ist ein Napa Valley Rotwein der zum Imperium der Jackson Familie zählt. Das besondere ist, dass das Weingut Cardinale zwar als Gebäude im Oakville District beheimatet ist, bei der Frucht für den späteren Top Wein Cardinale aber verschiedenen Weinberge genutzt werden. Die Weinberge verteilen sich in den besten Appelationen des Nap Valley: Diamond Mountain District. Mount Veeder. Stags Leap. Howell Mountain. St. Helena. Spring Mountain District. Für den Cardinale 2013 Proprietary Red Wine verwendet der begnadete Christopher Carpenter aus 10 verschiedenen Weinbergen Cabernet Sauvignon des Napa Valley welche dann 86% der finalen Blend repräsentieren. Und aus den Weinbergen des Howell Mountain Districts stammen 14% Merlot in der Blend für den Cardinale 2013. Der Ausbau erfolgt über 19 Monate in 100% französischem Holz. der Neuholzanteil beträgt 91%. Die Abfüllung erfolgt ungeschönt und unfiltriert.

Der 2013er Cardinale Proprietary Red Wine zeigt eine dichte, purpurfarbene Tönung. Das Flaggschiff der Domaine du Pegau

Die Cuvée Réservée der Domaine du Pegau ist ein Verschnitt aus 13 Rebsorten, hauptsächlich Grenache, Syrah und Mourvèdre, und zeigt die typischen Eigenschaften der Böden von Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Die dunkelrote Farbe wird noch von einem violetten Schimmer begleitet. In der Nase gilt es die reifen Früchte wie Sauerkirschen und Himbeeren zu entdecken, dazu Wacholderbeeren, schwarzer Pfeffer und Garrigue. Nach einigen Jahren Reifung werden die Aromen von Pflaumen, getrockneten Steinfrüchten, Leder, Pelz und Sandelholz geprägt sein. Am Gaumen ist er rund, üppig und kräftig mit weichen Tanninen. Mit der Zeit wird er sich zu einem komplexeren und würzigeren Wein entwickeln.

Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long and velvety, a sure-fire bet for cellaring.

Das Flaggschiff der Domaine du Pegau

Die Cuvée Réservée der Domaine du Pegau ist ein Verschnitt aus 13 Rebsorten, hauptsächlich Grenache, Syrah und Mourvèdre, und zeigt die typischen Eigenschaften der Böden von Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Die dunkelrote Farbe wird noch von einem violetten Schimmer begleitet. In der Nase gilt es die reifen Früchte wie Sauerkirschen und Himbeeren zu entdecken, dazu Wacholderbeeren, schwarzer Pfeffer und Garrigue. Nach einigen Jahren Reifung werden die Aromen von Pflaumen, getrockneten Steinfrüchten, Leder, Pelz und Sandelholz geprägt sein. Am Gaumen ist er rund, üppig und kräftig mit weichen Tanninen. Mit der Zeit wird er sich zu einem komplexeren und würzigeren Wein entwickeln.

Die Dominus Estate, Yountville, Kalifornien, wurde 1983 von Christian Moueix gegründet. Sie liegt auf dem berühmten Napanook-Weinberg und war in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren die Quelle der Früchte für einige der besten Weine des Napa Valley. Die Geschichte des Weinbergs lässt sich bis zu den Anfängen des Napa Valley zurückverfolgen: 1838 pflanzte George Yount, nach dem die Stadt Yountville benannt wurde, dort erstmals Weinreben an. Heute werden auf diesem historischen Weingut drei Weine produziert: Dominus, sein Flaggschiff, Napanook und Othello.
 
Der Jahrgang 2021 war geprägt von einem trockenen Winter und Frühling mit insgesamt 356 mm Niederschlag (Juli 2020 bis Juni 2021; historischer Durchschnitt: 787 mm). Es war das zweite Jahr in Folge einer Dürreperiode, die im Januar 2020 begann.
Die Temperaturen während der gesamten Wachstumsperiode waren konstant warm, lagen moderat über dem historischen Durchschnitt und blieben bis zur Reifephase stabil.
Die Witterungsbedingungen des Jahrgangs 2021 führten zu einer frühzeitigen Wasserknappheit, die die Bildung kleiner Beeren mit hohen Gehalten an phenolischen Verbindungen und intensiv ausgeprägten Aromen förderte.
Der Napanook 2021 zeigt tiefe, blutrote Noten mit Anklängen von Tabak und Blutorange und bietet eine nuancierte Komplexität sowie einen langen, anhaltenden Abgang.

The 2018 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a total knock-out, just as it was from barrel. Soaring in its aromatic intensity, Les Carmes dazzles from the very first taste. Inky red fruits, mocha, new leather, licorice, dried flowers, sage and mint envelop all the senses. Today, the 2018 appears to be slightly closed, but time brings out tons of aromatic energy and nuance. Cabernet Franc plays the leading role, unusual for this part of the region. Franc aromatics and a fair amount of whole cluster savoriness lend energy but also a feeling of richness without weight that is especially appealing. This is a masterpiece from Les Carmes Haut-Brion and Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier.

Dieser komplexe, raffinierte und harmonische Rotwein ist vielschichtig mit Aromen von schwarzen Kirschen, schwarzen Johannisbeeren und Gewürzen mit ausdrucksvoller Mineralität. Am Gaumen ist er kraftvoll, lebhaft und konzentriert mit mit feinen Tanninen, erstaunlicher Frucht und tollem Abgang. Die unglaublich beeindruckende Qualität der Pintas-Weine hat viele Gründe. Einer ist, dass die bis zu 89 Jahre alten Rebstöcke sich aus mehr als 40 verschiedenen autochthonen Rebsorten zusammensetzen, die typisch für das Douro-Tal sind. Nach der selektiven Handlese wurden die Trauben ganz traditionell und schonend über mehrere Tage hinweg von Menschen getreten. So können nur die besten Tannine in den späteren Wein gelangen. Die nach der Gärung erfolgenden Reifung und malolaktische Gärung wurde in französischen Eichenfässern für ca. 20 Monaten durchgeführt.

The 2019 Pintas is a field blend (over 40 grapes, but the dominant grapes are Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional) from old vines (around 90 years) aged for 20 months in 20% new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. What can you say about Pintas in all its glory? Big and expressive fruit is the first thing you'll take note of. Yet the second thing changes the opinion on and character of this wine. It's not even close to a fruit bomb. Its structure controls it, making it fresh, precise and lively, never jammy and ponderous. Then, it shows off some serious power. The winery's style generally eschews astringency (except at times on the Port), but there's certainly a fair bit of power on that finish. This is built to age and develop. It's delicious but not one-dimensional. It isn't even close to showing everything it has just now. While not completely unapproachable, it will show a lot better in a few years. It may not hit peak for 10. There were 5,900 bottles produced, plus some other size formats.

Whole clusters enhance a whole range of Cabernet Franc inflections in a wine that is immediately seductive. On the palate, the 2019 is creamy and textured. Plum, blood orange, spice, mocha and dried herbs lend an exotic quality that is so alluring. The 2019 is a mysterious, totally seductive wine that no one who is serious about Bordeaux will want to miss. To be sure, Les Carmes is far from typical, but it is incredibly unique. Its longevity is likely to be measured in multiples of decades. Quite simply, I loved it.

The 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has turned out very well in bottle. Mingling aromas of plums and cassis with notions of blood orange, warm spices and new oak, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit that's framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it's reminiscent of a more giving, extroverted version of Pouthier's superb 2016. As is now the rule at this address, some whole bunches were retained during maceration, and the wine saw a long élevage in a variety of vessels, from classic 225-liter Bordeaux barriques to foudres and amphorae. The blend is dominated by 42% Cabernet Franc, complemented by 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot.

Sein Finale ist lang, fast eine Minute ohne Probleme schmeckt man den Saffredi 2020 nach. Dies ist ohne Frage ein nahtlos guter Nachfolger, vielleicht sogar ein neues Level! Denn selten war ein Saffredi so jung schon so gut und grosse Weine sind ja bekanntlich immer GROSS. Ein Glück für uns alle, dass der Saffredi sich noch unter der magischen 100€ Grenze halten kann, wer braucht da schon Tignanello.

My article on icon wines from Tuscany focuses primarily on releases from the 2018 vintage. Fattoria le Pupille releases its top wine, the 2019 Saffredi, earlier than the rest. This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot is explosive. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has been slightly increased in this vintage (and we can expect the same in the warm 2020 vintage that saw the percentage of Merlot further reduced). This 2019 expression boasts a very compact and powerful quality of fruit with deep intensity, thick layering and a velvety texture. This is a real beauty that should be put aside for a few more years of aging.

Frische Kräuter wie Lorbeerblatt und Zitronengras betonen die dunklen Fruchtnoten. Die Qualität der Tannine ist exquisit, mit einer wunderbaren Eleganz und Finesse. Der Nachhall hält minutenlang an. Bereits jetzt herrlich zu genießen, wird aber nach 2026 noch besser sein.

Seidige Tannine und duftige, parfümierte Aromen unterstreichen den Eindruck von Finesse, der den Jahrgang 2018 deutlich von einigen seiner Vorgänger unterscheidet. Es wird spannend zu beobachten sein, ob der 2018er mit etwas Zeit in der Flasche noch an Körper gewinnt. Es ist ziemlich selten, dass ein Opus One in diesem frühen Stadium so zugänglich ist.

Das ist einer der besten S.L.V.s, die ich je verkostet habe, mit absoluter Balance und Struktur, die zeigt, was im Jahrgang 2018 möglich war. Er ist vollmundig, aber dennoch straff und ausbalanciert, mit Schicht über Schicht feiner Tannine, die diesem jungen Rotwein Tiefe und Schönheit verleihen. Aromen von schwarzen Johannisbeeren, Blaubeeren und floralen Noten. Straff im Abgang. Er braucht bis 2025, um wirklich zu zeigen, was er zu bieten hat.

Lastly, the 2020 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is another legendary wine from this château that has been on an incredible run over the past decade. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot that was brought up all in new French oak, it has a saturated purple hue to go with an incredible, mineral-laced bouquet of crème de cassis, liquid violets, graphite, and tobacco leaf. More structured and concentrated than any of the Léovilles, this blockbuster, deep, concentrated, full-bodied Saint-Julien has off-the-charts purity, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. I wrote in my notes, "Like the 2010, only better." You won't find a more concentrated yet flawlessly balanced and elegant wine out there. It's going to need a decade of cellaring and will have 40, 50, if not 60 years of longevity.

The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is a striking wine and one that I regretted not purchasing en primeur as soon as it landed in my glass. Offering up complex aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings, loamy soil, cigar wrapper, espresso roast and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with terrific concentrated, beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Checking in at 12.8% alcohol, its incipient complexity, ineffable sense of completeness and exquisite balance mark it out as the purists' choice among the trio of 2018, 2019 and 2020. In this vintage, the lots that made it into the blend were largely confined to the core gravel terroirs that represent Mouton's heart, meaning that there's a little less to go around. This was the first vintage overseen by Mouton's new technical director, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, and he has begun with a flying start.

The 2020 Château Mouton Rothschild is in the running for the biggest, baddest, and most concentrated wine in the vintage. Based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petite Verdot brought up in new barrels, this inky hued beast of wine offers up classic Mouton ripe black fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and freshly sharpened pencil-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, backward 2020 with terrific purity, building, mouth-coating tannins, terrific balance, and one gorgeous finish. Unfortunately, as with many of the top 2020s, this isn't for those looking for instant gratification, and a decade (or more) of cellaring is advised. This hit 13.1% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.78. It will be a 50-, 60-, 70+-year wine.

TDer Grand Vin stammt aus einem winzigen 11,15 Hektar großen Weinberg, der seit 1893 im Besitz der Familie Gratiot ist. Er befindet sich an der südlich ausgerichteten Côte Pavie, zwischen Château Pavie und Château Bellefont-Belcier, und besteht aus Ton auf Kalksteinböden. Der Weinberg wird derzeit mit einer massalen Selektion und einer höheren Pflanzdichte neu bepflanzt. Die Trauben werden von Hand sortiert, die Vinifikation erfolgt ausschließlich in Beton und dauert vier Wochen, der Ausbau erfolgt in 50% neuem französischen Eichenholz. Eine normale Mischung aus 90% Merlot und 10% Cabernet Franc, erinnert mich der 2020 Château Larcis Ducasse an den 2005er und gehört zu den besten Weinen am rechten Ufer. Er hat ein brillantes Parfum von roten und schwarzen Früchten, weißen Trüffeln, blättrigem Tabak und asiatischen Gewürzen. Dies führt zu einem vollmundigen, konzentrierten, kraftvollen Larcis-Ducasse mit ultrafeinen, aber aufbauenden Tanninen, perfekter Balance, einem kompakten Mittelgaumen und einem großartigen Abgang. In 7-8 Jahren wird er beinahe perfekt sein (wahrscheinlich bewerte ich ihn um einen Punkt zu niedrig) und hat eine Gesamtlebensdauer von 30 Jahren. Mehrfach mit konstanten Ergebnissen verkostet

Eine schöne Leistung, die sinnlicher und nahtloser ist als Thienponts strukturierterer, düsterer Pavie Macquin. Der 2020 Larcis Ducasse entfaltet sich im Glas mit Aromen von Kirschen, Brombeeren, Lorbeerblatt, Rosenblättern und Lakritze. Mittel- bis vollmundig, vielschichtig und konzentriert, mit feinen Tanninen, lebhaften Säuren und einem geschmeidigen, fleischigen Profil, endet er mit einem langen, expansiven Abgang. Dies ist ein besonderer Erfolg im Jahr 2020. Unter der Leitung von Nicolas Thienpont und David Suire seit 2002 nimmt Larcis Ducasse einen 11 Hektar großen Block neben Pavie ein. Der Larcis Ducasse 2020 ist ein echter Hingucker. Hell und vertikal im Gefühl, besitzt der 2020er eine enorme Energie, die zu seinem superklassischen Aufbau passt. Strahlen von Tannin und Säure geben dem Wein seine Form. Dunkle Kirsch- und Granatapfelfrucht treten hervor, mit einem Hauch von Blutorangensäure, die Frische verleiht. Graphit, getrocknete Kräuter, Menthol, Gewürze und Zeder treten mit etwas Überredung hervor, aber der 2020er ist sehr jung und sehr primär. Das verheißt natürlich eine großartige Zukunft. Der 2020er ist schlichtweg ein aufregender Larcis und eines der besten Angebote in ganz Bordeaux.

Moueix’s belief in dry farming seems to be paying off with stronger and stronger vintages, each successive year, and the 2014 is a sexy, opulent. layered, multidimensional wine with notes of red and blackcurrant, cedar wood, tobacco leaf, spice box and licorice. The color is a dense plum/ruby/purple, much like the Napanook. This is a beauty that is already drinking gorgeously – as most 2014s are – and will continue to evolve for 25 or so years.

The wine of the vintage in Saint-Julien, if not all of the Médoc, the 2019 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, aged in 100% new French oak, that hit a natural alcohol of 14.2% with a monster IPT (number of tannins) of 88. It's certainly one of the most concentrated Saint-Juliens, revealing a dense purple hue to go with a stacked bouquet of crème de cassis, freshly sharpened pencils, damp clay, tobacco, and hints of spring flowers. Concentrated, full-bodied, and powerful, it has incredible tannins, flawless balance, and a gorgeous finish. While most estates today are playing it safe and producing more ethereal, elegant wines that drink well right out of the gate, thankfully, this estate continues to make concentrated, powerful, age-worthy wines, and this heavenly beauty is as good as it gets! It will need a decade of bottle age to hit the early stages of maturity and will evolve for 50 years or more. Bravo to Bruno Borie!

Fuller maturity and a more rigorous selection over the last two decades have brought what proprietor Bruno Borie characterizes as additional "punch" to this wine, in the form of unprecedented levels of anthocyanins and tannins, but all that substance and structure will require some patience before we'll see if Ducru is still Saint-Julien's most elegant wine.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

Offering up aromas of cassis, sweet wild berries, rose petals, violets, licorice and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. This is another 2019 that en primeur purchasers can feel very pleased with.

The purity and finesse are truly something here, and while it already offers pleasure, it deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20+ years.

Matured in 50% new oak and 35% concrete amphora, this is endowed with an intense, enveloping bouquet of opulent blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed violet and light fig aromas, becoming more floral with aeration and revealing crushed violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with layered black fruit, cracked black pepper, hints of pencil lead and a splash of soy. This is one of the most powerful Pauillac wines that I encountered this vintage, very juicy and with plenty of rondeur on the very spicy finish. This should give three decades of drinking pleasure.

Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a vibrant core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and lively acids, it's exquisitely elegant and harmonious, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Stylistically, this wine exhibits a much closer affinity with the great Domaine de Chevalier of yesteryear than much of what was produced here in the early 2000s. It's a masterclass in what contemporary Bordeaux can deliver, and worth a special effort to seek out.

Blended of 60% Merlot. 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Pape Clement has a deep garnet-purple color and quite a serious, earthy nose with truffles, tilled soil, underbrush and smoked meats over a cassis, baked plums and redcurrants core plus a touch of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy, the palate is built like a brick house, supporting muscular black fruit and earthy notions and finishing very long and mineral laced.

The 2016 Pape Clément is fabulous. Racy and sumptuous in the glass, the 2016 captures the style that now characterizes Bernard Magrez's wines from his estate in Pessac. Specifically. the 2016 is wonderfully deep in the glass, and yet retains terrific freshness as well. A rush of dark cherry, plum, smoke, scorched earth, grilled herb, leather and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its compelling, inviting personality. I would prefer to give the 2016 at least a few years in bottle to allow its full breadth of aromatics to develop. Even so, there is so much to like. Pliant, supple and super-expressive. Pape Clément is gorgeous in 2016. Tasted two times.

It is perhaps a little more opulent than its peers, but unlike in the past. I don’t find it excessive. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin. There is a killer line of acidity and real panache toward a velvety, almost Pauillac-like finish armed with shimmering black fruit laced with graphite..

Deep, intense, classy and classic in style, delivering an immense amount of sapidity on the enormously persistent finish. As I mentioned previously, this is a less flamboyant Haut-Bailly, but more intellectual.

The sample at the château showed a touch more backbone than the one at the London UGC tastings, offering plenty of blackberry and black olive notes and then turning saline toward the dense, muscular finish. A classy, sophisticated Clinet that will reward those with the nous to cellar it for several years. Outstanding.

Verkostet auf Chateau Fonplegade am 02.04.2019 Cuvee: 90 Merlot / 10Cabernet Franc. Erntezeitpunkt: Zwischen 13. September und 29. September Ausbau: der Ausbau wird über 16 -18 Monate stattfinden / 50% neues Holz, 30% einjährige Fässer, 10% im Cement-Eitank und 10% Aphoren. Durchschnittsalter der Reben: 30 Jahre / Pflanzdichte: 8500 Reben je Hektar Die Farbe präsentiert sich von hoher Dichte, der Rand hat eine brilliante Aufhellung. The medium to full-bodied palate is beautifully crafted, dripping with poise and sophistication, draped in plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering black cherry note. Reminding me of the 2005 shortly after release, this heavenly juice offers astonishing richness and depth while staying flawlessly balanced and elegant. Sadly, there are less than 3,000 cases produced, but this monumental, legendary wine won't hit maturity for a good 8-10 years and will have 40-50 years of longevity if well stored. Hats off to Nicolas Thienpont and consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt for producing one of the wines of the vintage as well as one of the greatest young Bordeaux I've ever tasted.

The Grand Vin is the 2018 Château Canon, which is based on 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc brought up in 52% new French oak. Its incredible bouquet delivers richness paired with amazing freshness and precision, offering loads of crème de cassis and darker berry fruits intermixed with classic Saint-Emilion chalky minerality, graphite, scorched earth, and spring flowers. Gorgeous on the palate as well, with medium to full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, flawless balance, and again, this wonderful sense of freshness paired with ample richness, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30+ years. The 2009 and 2015 are still my favorite vintages of this wine, but this is up there with the best of them.

50 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 47 % Merlot. 2 % Petit Verdot. 1 % Cabernet Franc. Extrem dunkles Purpur mit lila und violetten Reflexen. Extrem dunkelbeerig mit vielen Rauchnuancen, Lakritze, dunklen Edelhölzer, Guinness-Biermalz und Black Currant im ersten Ansatz. Nach ein paar Minuten kommt eine feine Zimtnuance zum Tragen, Heidelbeerenmark und Tahiti-Vanilleschote. Das Aromenpaket ist in sich gekehrt und bleibt noch etwas im Innern obwohl der Wein gleichfalls auch verschwenderische Ansätze zeigt. Ausgeglichene, royale Adstringenz aufweisend, cremiges Extrakt mit massiver, aber nicht überladener Konzentration, bleibt blaubeerig und hat in sich eine nicht erklärbare Faszination. Trotz der absolut modernen Vinifikation bleibt er irgendwie klassisch. Nach dem Spucken blieb er minutenlang im Gaumen zurück. Und mir blieb dabei förmlich die Spucke weg. Das war mein grösster Pape-Clément als Jungweinprobe. Fünf Mal verkostet. Er ist momentan der beste Pessac-Léognan. Mit der Gefahr, dass ihn Haut-Brion oder Mission einmal ein- möglicherweise überholen werden. Aber vor 20 Jahren wird dies nicht der Fall sein!

100% Merlot gewachsen auf 2 Ha in unmittelbarer Sichtweite zu Le Pin und Vieux Chateau Certan. Mittlere bis volle Dichte. im Kern schwarz. schöne satte Frucht in der Nase. sehr feine Kirsche. auch hier wurde der Neuholzanteil zurückgefahren. trotzdem findet man diese zart süsslichen Anklänge wieder. Am Gaumen mit Kühle. sehr gute Harmonie keine Spur von Hitze. polierte Tannine. wieder diese unglaublich mineralische Frische. die nur dieses Terroir im Pomerol bieten kann. Würde man in die Wertung das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis einfliessen lassen. so müsste man deutlich höher punkten.

So ist und bleibt Haut Tropchaud 2018 auch in diesem herausfordernden JG eines der unglaublichsten Schnäppchen.

Chateau Haut Tropchaud - Der absolute Geheimtipp aus Pomerol. auf dem Plateau gelegen und damit Nachbar von Le Pin. L’Evangile. Vieux Chateau Certan und Petrus.

Dunkles. dichtes Rot mit violetten Reflexen. in der Nase Holunder. Johannisbeere. Kirschen in allen Schattierungen. aber auch Himbeere. Im Antrunk unglaublich präsent. hohe Dichte. die Säure ist perfekt eingebunden. alles wirkt sofort perfekt proportioniert. Aromatisch unglaublich präsent. Schwarzkirche. Johannisbeere und Brombeere. der Haut Tropchaud ist aber nicht überladen oder sperrig. man kann ihn kaum ausspucken. die Umamiwürze zwingt einen förmlich zum trinken und das selbst in diesem Stadium der Fassprobe! Sofort geht einem ein Lächeln durchs Gesicht. der pure Hedonismus. dabei lang und mit der richtigen Portion Würze und Mineralik. Wieder wird diese extrem hohe Balance deutlich. Das Kaufmuss aus diesem Jahrgang, der archetypische Pomerol überhaupt. Unglaublich schön. balanciert und lecker und wieder lecker. so muss ein Pomerol sein! Pomerol ist Genuss ohne jegliche Reue. viel mehr als man das in den anderen Appellationen Bordeauxs finden kann. Wer großen Bordeaux trinken will und Spaß haben will ist beim Chateau Haut Tropchaud Pomerol genau richtig!

Er weiss bereits nasal schon aufzufallen. Im Gaumen mit viel Stoff aufwartend, die Tannine sind reichlich vorhanden, runden sich aber bereits etwas ab, das Finale zeigt Brombeermark. Vanilleschote und wiederum enorm viel Lakritze. Ein legendärer CIos St. Martin mit einem dekadenhaften Potential. P.S. Die Wertung ist ohne Vitamin B entstanden. Der Wein ist wirklich so sensationell.

The 2015 Clos Saint Martin falls under the Moueix umbrella and is certainly one of the gems in their lineup. A blend of 90% Merlot and 5% each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s slightly reserved on the nose, but man, what a palate! Notes of strawberries, black raspberries, vanilla bean, toasted bread and dried flowers all flow to a full-bodied, opulent, huge wine that stays incredibly well balanced and elegant, with no hard edges and a cashmere-like texture. Count me impressed. I’d be thrilled to drink bottles anytime over the coming two decades.
