... ist der Winkl ist ein saftiger, zart fruchtiger und mineralischer Sauvignon Blanc, wie Kellermeister Rudi Kofler unterstreicht: "Farbe: intensiv leuchtendes strohgelb mit dezent grünem Schimmer. Geruch: Fruchtbetonte Aromen von Aprikosen, Mandarinen und Passionsfrucht vermischen sich mit aromatischen Duftkomponenten von Holunderblüten, Stachelbeere und Minze. Geschmack: Am Gaumen setzt sich der fruchtige Eindruck gepaart mit einer feinen Säure fort. Besonders überzeugt gute Struktur sowie der mineralische und gleichzeitig aromareiche Abgang."

Immer ein guter Kauf, meinte Monica Larner noch im Dezember 2022 über den Terlan Winkl Sauvignon Blanc. Dem Jahrgang 2021 gab sie 93 Punkte: "Er ist duftend und blumig mit kräftigen Aromen, die aus dem Glas hervorstechen. Sie wissen definitiv, dass Sie einen Sauvignon Blanc vor sich haben, aber im Gegensatz zu einigen Exemplaren aus der Neuen Welt, die sich auf grüne Noten von Kiwi und Tomatenblättern konzentrieren, hat dieser Wein eine sehr kristalline oder weiße Persönlichkeit mit Kalkstein, Litschi und knackiger Birne. Wenn Sie diese Rebsorte lieben, kommen Sie hier voll auf Ihre Kosten." Von einem "sehr klassischen Südtiroler Sauvignon Blanc mit viel gelbem Grapefruitaroma, aber auch vielen kräuterigen und süßen pflanzlichen Noten (z.B. grüne Bohnen, Spargel, etc.)" spricht James Suckling, der den Jahrgang 2021 92 Punkte gab. The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that I did not taste en primeur. Picked from September 12 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak, it has a gorgeous, seductive bouquet of pure blackberry, bilberry, crushed iris petals and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

The black fruits burrow downwards through the palate at first. keeping things pretty closed. everything holding its breath. before the fruit opens. There is the precision of Rauzan Ségla that is reminiscent of the 2016. less of the immediate voluptuous impact of 2018 but the density becomes extremely clear in the glass. A serious Rauzan. cassis and cedar. still with a rinse of iris flowers to give it the Margaux touch. 3.73pH. 50/50 1st and 2nd wine. A yield of 42l/ha.

The palate is powerful and has quite intense flavors of blackberries and blueberries with a super rich and ripe frame of tannin that carries long and expands the finish in impressive style. Erstmals seit 2011 ist der Merlotanteil wieder etwas höher, das Bukett entsprechend mehr von Herzkirschen geprägt, als vom üblich Cassis de Pauillac, zart nach Nougat und Karamell, feine Kräuterwürze. Kraftvoll, engmaschig, zeigt gute Süße, schokoladiger Touch, reife Tannine, große Komplexität, tolle Länge und Würze, eine sehr eigenständige Persönlichkeit, ein Riesenversprechen für die Zukunft, was sich En Primeur bereitsb angekündigtte: dieser Wein hat alles, was ein Weltklassewein braucht.

The aromas to this are really amazing, with a potpourri of spices and dried flowers, as well as redcurrants, sweet plums and even some peaches. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate in an encompassing yet always elegant and pure way. It’s succulent and unadulterated. Like crushed, perfectly ripened grapes. The length is rather endless. The tannins build. Fabulous young red. 35% in amphora and the rest in 50% new oak and 15% one-year oak. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2028, but an absolute joy to taste now.

The 2019 Pontet-Canet was so effusive and generous en primeur. Today, though, it is quite reticent. That won't be an issue for those who can be patient, but patience indeed will be the key here. Dark red fleshed fruit, tobacco, cedar, spice, kirsch, mint and blood orange gradually open with a bit of coaxing. Imposing tannins wrap it all together. The 2019 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty, but it needs time.

The 2019 Pontet Canet was picked from September 23 until October 10, finishing with the Petit Verdot, and bottled in mid-June/July. My sample, tasted at the property, was decanted. Matured in 50% new oak and 35% concrete amphora, this is endowed with an intense, enveloping bouquet of opulent blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed violet and light fig aromas, becoming more floral with aeration and revealing crushed violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with layered black fruit, cracked black pepper, hints of pencil lead and a splash of soy. This is one of the most powerful Pauillac wines that I encountered this vintage, very juicy and with plenty of rondeur on the very spicy finish. This should give three decades of drinking pleasure.

Die Nase ist sehr betörend und verführerisch. reife Frucht. süssliche Würze. geröstete Nüsse. Sahnemokka. Am Gaumen super balanciert. dennoch stoffig und kompakt. überhaupt nicht anstrengend. Sehr sauberes und langes Finale. Für uns klar über 2014.2015 aber nicht an den Best Ever Meyney 2016. welchen wir noch vor der Primeurwoche im Glas hatten. da fehlt einfach ein gutes Stück.

Technical Director Anne Le Naour has done a terrific job in reining in some of the excess weight and power of previous vintages, but without sacrificing richness. Classy and layered, Meyney boasts fabulous depth and tons of character. Ripe red/purplish fruit, spice, blood orange, smoke and incense are some of the many aromas and flavors that mesh together. The 2018 offers striking immediacy, but also has enough structure to develop well in bottle for 15-20 years, maybe more. The 2018 Meyney is a wine of immense pleasure. Best of all, it is a tremendous value.

In the glass. the 2017 is sumptuous and layered. with superb detail and tons of sheer pedigree. In 20 years. readers will have a fabulous time tasting the 2015. 2016. 2017 and 2018 together and debating their respective merits. Dark plum fruit. striking Franc aromatics and the clean. focused energy of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau make for a ravishing. exquisite wine of the highest level. In a word: breathtaking.

Showing spectacularly, the 2017 Chateau Canon checks in as a final blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc that’s from one of the most exceptional terroirs in the appellation. Hitting 14% alcohol (the pH is 3.66), it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeously sweet raspberries and cassis-like fruit interwoven with notes of spring flowers, rose petal, white chocolate, and spice. While it doesn’t have the massive opulence of the 2015 and 2016, it’s more classically styled as well flawlessly balanced, with a terrific sense of minerality, ultra-fine tannins, and a brilliant finish. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, and it will evolve gracefully for 30-40 years. Hats off to Nicolas Audebert as well as the team of Thomas Duclos for one of the wines of the vintage!

The 2019 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits notions of minty cassis, plums, loamy soil, burning embers and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety palate that’s deep and concentrated, its generous core of lively fruit concealing an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannin. Consisting of fully 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is another true classic from the Borie family.

6 Dec, 2021 – This is a very polished young wine with lemon-rind, blackcurrant, cedar and lavender character. It’s full, yet so refined and sophisticated, with floral undertones to the pretty fruit. The tannins are intense and long. Give this at least five or six years to soften. Try after 2025.

The harmonious, poised palate has wonderful focus, very fine tannins and a silky-smooth texture. As I remarked in my previous note, it’s very pliant and persistent, with a graphite-tinged finish. A glorious Grand Puy Lacoste that will need time to assimilate the oak – but hey, GPL lovers know the rules.

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2020 Château Langoa Barton comes from a mix of different sites in Saint-Julien, which makes it a great representation of the vintage and appellation. The blend is 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue to go with a beautiful bouquet of red and black cherries, currants, leafy tobacco, and cedar pencil, with a touch of damp earth that emerges with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has plenty of mid-palate depth and richness, velvety tannins, and a great finish. This plush, up-front, expansive, wonderfully textured Saint-Julien will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. It's the finest example from this château I've tasted. Bravo!

Readers will find a rich. flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here. but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks. graphite. lavender. blackberry. plum. and violet infuse a Saint-Émilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all. the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent. dark Saint-Émilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it.
