Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pauillac

Das weltberühmte Chateau Lafite Rothschild liegt in der Gemeinde Pauillac und ist dort neben Mouton Rothschild und Chateau Latour eines von dreien der insgesamt 5 Premier Cru Classes. Diese höchste aller Klassifizierungen erhielt das Chateau Lafite 1855 anlässlich der Weltausstellung in Paris. Das Chateau erstreckt sich über eine Rebfläche von 100 Hektar wo von etwas mehr als 4 Hektar sogar in der Appellation Saint Estephe liegen. Die Weinberge erstrecken sich in etwa 30 Metern Höhe und stehen auf einer bis zu 8 Meter dicken Kiesschicht die wiederum auf Lehm lagert. Der Name Lafite lässt sich aus einem Dialekt in der Gascogne ableiten in dem la hite der Hügel bedeutet, genau auf diesem Kieshügel liegt eben auch das Chateau Lafite. Die Weingärten sind mit knapp 70% Cabernet Sauvignon bestockt, die edle und spät ausreifenden Traube bringt dann auch einen grossen Anteil der so characterstarken Weine des Weinguts hervor. Im Schnitt werden auf dem Anwesen gut 240 tausen Flaschen Erstwein erzeugt in etwa die selbe Menge entfällt dann noch einmal auf den Zweitwein Carruades de Lafite.

One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. Wafting from the glass with arresting aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with violets, cigar box and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, concentrated mid-palate framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe acids, and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. This rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates. The blend contains fully 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and attained a modest 13.4% alcohol.

12 Jan, 2022 – So much sweet tobacco, Spanish cedar, dried flowers, dark mushrooms and roses. Really aromatic. This is so polished and very powerful, yet ethereal and refined at the same time. The finish goes on for minutes. Tight and harmonious. You want to drink it! So balanced, yet it will age beautifully. It will be this good forever. 94% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2031.

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild is a mesmerizing wine that shows how compelling the vintage is on the Left Bank. Elegant, creamy and exquisitely layered, the 2019 Lafite conquers all the senses. There is tremendous density and power that belies the 12.8% alcohol, but then again, that can be the magic of Bordeaux. Classic Lafite red plum fruit, spice, cedar, licorice and rose petal linger on the striking, persistent finish.

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild screams Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose of intense black fruit, graphite and subtle minty aromas, supremely well-defined and revealing a hint of star anise with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is beautifully balanced, offering sappy black fruit, black pepper, graphite and just a touch of spice. This has more body, maybe even a touch more sinew than recent vintages, perhaps because of the reconfiguration of the Merlot parcels (see my note en primeur). Very persistent and almost uncharacteristically grippy on the finish, this is a gifted Lafite-Rothschild that will last 50+ years. It will certainly surpass the 2018 with continued bottle age.

Dense and driven, with more than enough elements to match its energy, meaning this can cruise in the cellar for a long time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2026 through 2045.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2020 Pauillac

Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2020 Château Lafite-Rothschild is a sensational effort checking in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that hit 12.8% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.94. As Lafite as Lafite gets, this ultra-classic reveals a dense ruby/plum hue as well as a tight, yet layered bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and subtle spice. Flawlessly balanced, deep, concentrated, and layered, it has an incredible mid-palate, building, perfect tannins, and a finish that leaves you salivating. Refined, elegant, and perfection are the buzz words here. Unfortunately, it's not for the instant gratification crowd, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this require 15 years to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window. It will probably hit its 100th birthday in fine form.

The 2020 Lafite Rothschild opens in the glass with a deep bouquet of cassis, black truffle, pencil shavings and violets. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, its broad attack segues into an ample core of fruit framed by supple, melting tannins. Seamless, layered and complete, it's richer and deeper pitched than the 2019, and its notably high pH of 3.94 likely means it will never shut down. It's a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, incorporating just a touch more Merlot from the plateau of Carruades than the 2019.

Amazing aromas here with tobacco, crushed stone, cigar box, currants, tar, and lead pencil, as well as spices, iron, and dried ginger. Medium- to full-bodied, with a density and tightness. Very compact and complex. Racy. Delicacy with strength. Orange peel undertones. A wine to contemplate. You must understand it to understand the great Lafites of the past and those of the future. Only 12.8% alcohol. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Best after 2030, but drink it if you have the chance taste it.

95-97 Punkte. Seine Nase ist präzise und deffiniert, man hat eine Menge dunkler und heller Frucht. Im Weiteren Duft zeigen sich dann auch die minzig kühlen Nuancen, etwas abgerieber Graphit und eine florale Komponente sowie etwas Tabak. Im Mund ist der Wein frisch und balanciert mit einer präzisen Säure und feinkörnigem Tannin. Dieser Lafite klingt fein, knackung und hellbeerig aus. Mittlerer bis Voller Körper bei sehr sngenehmer Länge. 30 Sekunden sind das schon jetzt.

The finest of the first growths this year appears to be the 2023 Lafite Rothschild, a terrific effort that unwinds in the glass with deep and incipiently complex aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, lilac and violets mingled with hints of cigar wrapper and mint. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's vibrant and refined, with a deep core of fruit, plenty of sweet structuring tannin and a compelling marriage between energy and plenitude. It's a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot that reminds me of 2019's tannins combined with 2016's unimpeachable classicism.

The purity of cabernet sauvignon is so evident here. It mesmerizes you with aromas of black and red currants, cedar, tobacco and bark. It's full-bodied yet there's very impressive weightlessness and agility, as well as subtlety and focus. Some iron and terra-cotta. Cedar and sandalwood undertones. Juicy and plummy at the end. 12.9% alcohol. 3.75 pH. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot.

The 2023 Lafite-Rothschild was picked September 7 to 29 at 45hL/ha and matured in 90% new oak. This is more discrete on the nose—one of the tropes of this First Growth—even when compared to the more immediate Carruades. This takes time to unfurl in the glass, slowly revealing black fruit laced with pencil box and just a touch of pressed violet. There’s wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with a cashmere texture, very pure (again) with a judicious dab of cracked black pepper. The finish is very sleek, thanks to its almost filigree tannins, seeming to glide across the palate. It's not a grippy or sinewy Pauillac, and on reflection, it is technically perfect. Yet, I find myself searching for a bit more…soul. Perhaps a few rough edges would captivate the emotions. This is a delicious Lafite-Rothschild no doubt, but I want it to move me once in bottle. Maybe it will.

98-100 Punkte. This hits you right off the first nose, driven by slate and crushed rocks, setting the tone and the architecture, guiding the fruit through the palate. Cassis, bilberry, tobacco leaf, graphite, crushed mint, finessed and sculpted, this is a gorgeous Lafite, with fine tannins and the squid ink character that seems to be present in all of this stable of wines except Moulin de Duhart. Hidden power, where nothing is too much and yet everything is concentrated, once again proving that the terroir at this particular spot has its own personality that stands out every year. High Cabernet as ever, combined with around 15% press wine. Not the concentration of 2022, but in many ways showcasing the essence of Lafite more squarely, and this will delight anyone lucky enough to own it in future years. 45hl/h yield, highest since 2015, harvest September 7 to 29. 100% new oak. New cellar underway, due for completion in 2027. I am giving it 10 years to begin entering its opening window, a little less than usual but it will make no difference to how long you can cellar it.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2015 Pauillac

Lisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Lafite Rothschild im Februar 2018 wie folgt:

The deep garnet-purple shaded 2015 Lafite Rothschild is blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot and was matured for 20 months in new oak barrels from Tonnellerie des Domaines (their own cooperage). It is still sporting a lot of cedar at this nascent stage with a vibrant core of black raspberries. red currants and crushed plums plus touches of cigar boxes. violets and underbrush with a waft of tilled loam. Medium-bodied and elegantly styled with wonderful freshness and depth. it is compellingly earthy/minerally in the mouth with a frame of seductively silky yet very firm tannins and culminating in a very long. racy and pure finish. Boasting spectacular finesse and packed with nuances. clearly. given some of the challenges here in 2015. this is a masterpiece of diligence in the vineyards. careful selection and very clever crafting—bravo!

Lead and graphite are complimented by notes of blueberries and blackberries. Blackcurrants. too. Full-bodied and focused with very round and polished tannins. Elegance with power. Very classic nature for Lafite. Try in 2022.

91 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 9 % Merlot. (Der Cabernet Franc und der Petit Verdot wurde deklassiert). Sattes Purpur-Granat. dicht in der Mitte. lila Schimmer aussen. Das Bouquet zeigt eine wunderbare. delikate und auch berauschende Süsse; Caramel. Sandelholz. kandierte Cakesfrüchte. Im zweiten Ansatz zeigt er ein parfümiertes Damassine-Pflaumenspiel und feinste Noten von frischem Thymian. Minze und getrockneten Küchenkräutern. Im Gaumen nonchalant. eine sehr reiche aber auch gleichzeitig ganz feine Adstringenz vermittelnd. Die Balance ist royal und alle Elemente sind am richtigen Ort. Das Gegenteil von einem Bulldozer. also einen tänzerischen. schier verspielten Spitzenwein zeigend. Und genau das darf der Lafite manchmal auch. Das wird eine ziemlich ähnliche Delikatesse wie es der 1953er in seinen allerbesten Zeiten war.
