The 2020 d'Armailhac is excellent, bursting with aromas of blackberries, violets, burning embers and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's broad but precise, with powdery tannins and a lively core of fruit. It's a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 D'Armailhac strides confidently out of the glass with classic scents of cassis, warm plums and cedar chest, plus wafts of pencil lead, bay leaves and kirsch. The medium-bodied palate has a sturdy frame of chewy tannins and plenty of freshness to support the crunchy black and red fruits, finishing savory. The blend this year is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol of 13.3%.

The 2020 d’Armailhac, raised in 50% new oak with a planned 17-month barrel maturation, is a little deeper in color compared to the Clerc Milon. I find more complexity on the nose of blackberry, briar, cedar and pencil box aromas, less extravagant than previous vintages and more terroir-driven, perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that have a little more edge than the Clerc Milon, plus there is slightly more mineralité and depth. In particular, the finish is very harmonious and fans out wonderfully. This Château d’Armailhac is a splendid wine in the making, and one of the best examples from the estate that I have tasted out of barrel.

The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is a striking wine and one that I regretted not purchasing en primeur as soon as it landed in my glass. Offering up complex aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings, loamy soil, cigar wrapper, espresso roast and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with terrific concentrated, beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Checking in at 12.8% alcohol, its incipient complexity, ineffable sense of completeness and exquisite balance mark it out as the purists' choice among the trio of 2018, 2019 and 2020. In this vintage, the lots that made it into the blend were largely confined to the core gravel terroirs that represent Mouton's heart, meaning that there's a little less to go around. This was the first vintage overseen by Mouton's new technical director, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, and he has begun with a flying start.

The 2020 Château Mouton Rothschild is in the running for the biggest, baddest, and most concentrated wine in the vintage. Based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petite Verdot brought up in new barrels, this inky hued beast of wine offers up classic Mouton ripe black fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and freshly sharpened pencil-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, backward 2020 with terrific purity, building, mouth-coating tannins, terrific balance, and one gorgeous finish. Unfortunately, as with many of the top 2020s, this isn't for those looking for instant gratification, and a decade (or more) of cellaring is advised. This hit 13.1% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.78. It will be a 50-, 60-, 70+-year wine.

Of the recent trilogy of 2018, 2019, and 2020, director Nicolas Glumineau has been consist in preferring the 2020, although I think at this point the nudge goes to the 2019. Regardless, these are all truly singular, magical wines that every reader will be thrilled to have in the cellar. It's a good time to be a Bordeaux lover!

All of the intensity of the year comes through nicely and yet the personality of Armailhac is evident also. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. There is a bit more breadth and richness that is the result of yields that were just 32 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to the more typical 42 or so. It was a vintage marked by heat stress, small berries and lower juice to skin ratio, as well as some parcels affected by mildew.

Obwohl Justine Tesseron meine Bitte, das Weingut zu besuchen, ablehnte, konnte ich eine Flasche des 2020 Pontet-Canet für diese Bewertung erwerben. Der Wein beginnt vielversprechend und entfaltet im Glas ansprechende Aromen von Kirschen, süßen Beeren und Pflaumenkompott, die sich mit Flieder und Lakritz vermischen. Darauf folgt jedoch ein mittel- bis vollmundiger, fester und extrahierter Gaumen, dem es an Fülle und Substanz fehlt, um die recht trocknenden Tannine zu verbergen, die den erdigen Abgang dominieren. Unter Bordeaux-Insidern ist es kein Geheimnis, dass dieses Weingut – das von bedeutenden und lobenswerten Investitionen profitiert hat und bis 2011 eine beeindruckende Aufwärtsentwicklung zeigte – seit 2012 eine verwirrend unbeständige Leistung zeigt, wobei erfolgreiche Jahrgänge mit relativen Enttäuschungen wechseln. Der Jahrgang 2020 bestätigt diesen Eindruck. Das Flaggschiff dieses Weinguts, der 2020 Château Pontet-Canet, ist eine Schönheit, die auf 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 32 % Merlot und jeweils 4 % Cabernet Franc und Petit Verdot basiert. Der Ausbau erfolgte in 50 % neuem Holz und zu 35 % in Amphoren. Mit seiner tief violetten Farbe und einem großartigen Bouquet von dunklen Johannisbeeren, Pflaumen, Tabakblatt und erdigen Trüffelnoten beeindruckt er schon in der Nase. Am Gaumen zeigt er sich mit vollmundiger Fülle, einer vielschichtigen, nahtlosen Textur und einem großartigen Abgang. Ein äußerst gelungener Pontet, einer der wenigen Pauillacs, der für mich den Jahrgang 2019 übertrifft. In der Farbe tintenartig violett mit rubinfarbenen Reflexen. Viele feste, aber geradlinige Tannine, eine gute Portion Graphit, Bleistiftmine und Cassisknospe. Der Mittelgaumen zeigt Tiefe, durchzogen von wilden Brombeeren, Weißdorn, Salbei, Rosmarin und wilder Minze. Er hat Persönlichkeit und wirkt ein wenig altmodisch, aber im besten Sinne. Empfehlenswert. Es wurde vermieden, dass der Wein in diesem Jahrgang überkonzentriert wirkt, während er dennoch seiner Herkunft treu bleibt. 4 % Petit Verdot vervollständigen die Cuvée, 50 % neues Holz, 35 % Amphoren, 15 % einjährige Fässer. Dies ist der erste vollständige Jahrgang für Mathieu Bessonnet, der 2020 den langjährigen Direktor Jean-Michel Comme ablöste. Seit vier Jahren wird ausschließlich Erstwein produziert, und 45 % des Weins werden in neuen Eichenfässern ausgebaut, 15 % in einjährigen Fässern und 40 % in Amphoren. Der Mehltau-Druck zu Beginn des Jahres war stressig, aber man hatte aus 2018 gelernt und genügend Arbeitskräfte mobilisiert, um den gesamten Weinberg an einem (sehr langen) Tag zu bearbeiten. So lagen die Erträge letztendlich nahe am Normalwert.

This fulfills all my expectations from my barrel tasting and is quite simply one of the best d’Armailhac wines ever made.

Dark red plum. licorice. spice. iron. game and scorched earth all give d'Armailhac its distinctive savory flavor profile that is quite appealing. Time in the glass brings out additional layers of nuance that complete the wine nicely.
