The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is a striking wine and one that I regretted not purchasing en primeur as soon as it landed in my glass. Offering up complex aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings, loamy soil, cigar wrapper, espresso roast and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with terrific concentrated, beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Checking in at 12.8% alcohol, its incipient complexity, ineffable sense of completeness and exquisite balance mark it out as the purists' choice among the trio of 2018, 2019 and 2020. In this vintage, the lots that made it into the blend were largely confined to the core gravel terroirs that represent Mouton's heart, meaning that there's a little less to go around. This was the first vintage overseen by Mouton's new technical director, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, and he has begun with a flying start.

The 2020 Château Mouton Rothschild is in the running for the biggest, baddest, and most concentrated wine in the vintage. Based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petite Verdot brought up in new barrels, this inky hued beast of wine offers up classic Mouton ripe black fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and freshly sharpened pencil-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, backward 2020 with terrific purity, building, mouth-coating tannins, terrific balance, and one gorgeous finish. Unfortunately, as with many of the top 2020s, this isn't for those looking for instant gratification, and a decade (or more) of cellaring is advised. This hit 13.1% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.78. It will be a 50-, 60-, 70+-year wine.

The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol of 13.1% and a pH of around 3.78. Deep purple-black colored, it starts off with subtle notions of fresh raspberries and blackberries, needing considerable swirling and patience to unlock its intense core of blackcurrant pastilles, rose oil, licorice and cardamom, plus touches of cedar chest, black truffles and crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is like a tightly coiled spring, possessing exhilarating tension and very firm, ripe, multi-grained tannins to frame the layer upon layer of black and red fruits intertwined with earthy and mineral accents, finishing very long and very fragrant. It is certainly the most coy, reticent and elegant grand vin of this trio of vintages (2018, 2019 and 2020), bearing Mouton's signature perfume, opulence and stylishness with great grace and sophistication as opposed to devil-may-care flamboyance. It's this gently teasing, achingly beautiful restraint that collectors are not going to want to miss.

The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is an intriguing proposition, aromatically speaking. Initially, it is less forthcoming than the last three vintages, but it’s just toying with you, eventually releasing captivating scents of blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone, touches of India ink and traces of violet petal. The oak is seamlessly integrated and these aromatics grow in stature with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with very lithe and finely chiseled tannins that frame the pixelated black fruit. Displaying wonderful mineralité and tension, this is a less exuberant and lavish Mouton Rothschild, perhaps, but more cerebral and intellectual than this First Growth during the 1990s. As smooth as Snoop Dogg's flow, this is a marvelous Mouton.

Obwohl Justine Tesseron meine Bitte, das Weingut zu besuchen, ablehnte, konnte ich eine Flasche des 2020 Pontet-Canet für diese Bewertung erwerben. Der Wein beginnt vielversprechend und entfaltet im Glas ansprechende Aromen von Kirschen, süßen Beeren und Pflaumenkompott, die sich mit Flieder und Lakritz vermischen. Ein äußerst gelungener Pontet, einer der wenigen Pauillacs, der für mich den Jahrgang 2019 übertrifft. In der Farbe tintenartig violett mit rubinfarbenen Reflexen. Viele feste, aber geradlinige Tannine, eine gute Portion Graphit, Bleistiftmine und Cassisknospe. Der Mittelgaumen zeigt Tiefe, durchzogen von wilden Brombeeren, Weißdorn, Salbei, Rosmarin und wilder Minze. Er hat Persönlichkeit und wirkt ein wenig altmodisch, aber im besten Sinne. Empfehlenswert. Es wurde vermieden, dass der Wein in diesem Jahrgang überkonzentriert wirkt, während er dennoch seiner Herkunft treu bleibt. 4 % Petit Verdot vervollständigen die Cuvée, 50 % neues Holz, 35 % Amphoren, 15 % einjährige Fässer. Dies ist der erste vollständige Jahrgang für Mathieu Bessonnet, der 2020 den langjährigen Direktor Jean-Michel Comme ablöste. Seit vier Jahren wird ausschließlich Erstwein produziert, und 45 % des Weins werden in neuen Eichenfässern ausgebaut, 15 % in einjährigen Fässern und 40 % in Amphoren. Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2020 Pauillac

Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2020 Château Lafite-Rothschild is a sensational effort checking in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that hit 12.8% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.94. As Lafite as Lafite gets, this ultra-classic reveals a dense ruby/plum hue as well as a tight, yet layered bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and subtle spice. Flawlessly balanced, deep, concentrated, and layered, it has an incredible mid-palate, building, perfect tannins, and a finish that leaves you salivating. Refined, elegant, and perfection are the buzz words here. Unfortunately, it's not for the instant gratification crowd, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this require 15 years to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window. It will probably hit its 100th birthday in fine form.

The 2020 Lafite Rothschild opens in the glass with a deep bouquet of cassis, black truffle, pencil shavings and violets. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, its broad attack segues into an ample core of fruit framed by supple, melting tannins. Seamless, layered and complete, it's richer and deeper pitched than the 2019, and its notably high pH of 3.94 likely means it will never shut down. It's a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, incorporating just a touch more Merlot from the plateau of Carruades than the 2019.

Amazing aromas here with tobacco, crushed stone, cigar box, currants, tar, and lead pencil, as well as spices, iron, and dried ginger. Medium- to full-bodied, with a density and tightness. Very compact and complex. Racy. Delicacy with strength. Orange peel undertones. A wine to contemplate. You must understand it to understand the great Lafites of the past and those of the future. Only 12.8% alcohol. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Best after 2030, but drink it if you have the chance taste it.

Seemingly from a cooler vintage with its purity, vibrancy, and focus, it nevertheless is concentrated and has ripe, gorgeous tannins, a great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. A deep, concentrated, flawlessly balanced 2020 that's built for the long haul, it needs a solid decade of cellaring and will be a 50+-year wine. Of the recent trilogy of 2018, 2019, and 2020, director Nicolas Glumineau has been consist in preferring the 2020, although I think at this point the nudge goes to the 2019. Regardless, these are all truly singular, magical wines that every reader will be thrilled to have in the cellar. It's a good time to be a Bordeaux lover!

It gently unfolds in the glass to reveal blackberry, faint sea spray scents (a whiff of the old Gironde estuary) and just a touch of crushed stone. This is well defined though not powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins on the entry that frame the bright blackberry and raspberry fruit. This Pauillac conveys superb energy, especially toward the Japanese nori-infused finish, awakening and revivifying the senses. It is a classically sculpted and very harmonious Haut-Batailley that will give 25–30 years of drinking pleasure, but should be cellared for 5–6 years.

17 Jan, 2022 – Fresh tobacco, currant and earth, opening up to forest flowers. It’s rich in tannins, but very soft and beautiful. Layered, with lots of fine fruit and a velvety texture. Blackberry and chocolate in the finish too. 27% of the crop and a blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot, the rest petit verdot and cabernet franc. Delicious already, but give it at least six years of bottle age. Better after 2027.

Given that Margaux's second wine contains plenty of fruit that made it into the grand vin just a decade or two ago, great things are to be expected from this bottling. Yet I was nonetheless taken aback by the quality of the 2019 Pavillon Rouge. Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums and cherries mingled with rose petals and sweet spices, it's medium to full-bodied, sensual and concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is an exquisite Pavillon Rouge that is well worth seeking out. I confess that I don't buy many second wines, but I did purchase a case of this, with alacrity, right after tasting it.

One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. The 2016 Pavie is simply magnificent. Gracious. perfumed and exquisitely beautiful. the 2016 has it all. I can't remember seeing a Pavie with this much translucent energy and nuance. Black cherry. plum. lavender. spice and menthol all infuse this explosive. young wine with tremendous character. In the glass. the 2016 is vivid. aromatically deep and full of saline-infused energy. It is without question one of the wines of the vintage. As it turns out Gerard Perse also opened the 2008. Although the two vintages (2016 and 2008) in question are quite different in style and quality. the trajectory Pavie has taken in recent years is evident. The 2016 is a thrilling wine. That's all there is to it. The blend is 60% Merlot. 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted two times.

So fresh and vivacious. this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024.

Seidige Tannine und duftende, angehobene Aromen tragen zu einem Eindruck von Finesse bei, der den 2018er in ziemlich deutlicher Weise von einigen der vorhergehenden Jahrgänge abhebt. Es wird interessant sein zu sehen, ob der 2018er mit etwas Zeit in der Flasche an Körper gewinnt. Es ist ziemlich selten, dass der Opus One in diesem Stadium so zugänglich ist.

Der Cabernet Franc wurde deklassiert. 30% der Produktion ergab Grand Vin. Sattes Purpur-Granat, dicht in der Mitte, lila Schimmer aussen. Würziges Bouquet, tintige Anflüge und deutlich florale Noten, nicht so reserviert wie der Les Forts de Latour, aber auch nicht unbedingt kommunikativ. Im Gaumen zeigt er dann fraglos Grösse, schwarzer Pfeffer, Pumpernickelbrot, Heidelbeeren und Cassis, die Adstringenz ist verlangend, er zeigt aber auch eine schier feminine Noblesse, nachhaltig, mit mittlerem Druck. Wenn man Latour auf dem Etikett liest und den Jahrgang 2015 vor sich hat, dann erfüllt er vielleicht (momentan) nicht ganz die Erwartungen. Man hat hier aber auch das positive Gefühl, dass er in seiner Evolution noch rückständig ist und sicherlich noch zulegen kann/könnte. 19/20 2026 – 2060

Der Masseto ist der berühmteste, reinsortige Merlot Italiens. Der 2019er wurde über 24 Monate in 100 % neuen Barriques ausgebaut. Dunkle, lebendige Farbe. Duftig, fein und frisch, wirkt der Masseto 2019 trotz 15 vol.-%. nicht breit oder deftig, alles ist auf Finesse und Frische ausgerichtet, mit feinen kirschigen Nuancen und tiefgründiger, ätherischer Kopfnote. Satt und cremig im Auftakt, präsentiert er sich extrem differenziert und feinsinnig auf der Zunge, mit groß angelegter Struktur und ungemein feinkörnigen Gerbstoffen. Weit gefasst und tiefgründig am Gaumen besitzt er zwar nicht die ganz große Terroir-Charakteristik à la Pétrus oder Trotanoy und dennoch ist eine Größe im Masseto zu erkennen, die ihn zu einem außergewöhnlichen Wein macht. This bottle opens a new chapter for one of Italy's most celebrated and collected wines. The first vintage made entirely in its dedicated state-of-the-art winery (and the first vintage with a 10% dabble of Cabernet Franc added to what has historically aways been a pure expression of Merlot), the Masseto 2019 Masseto has two main themes at heart: concentration and elegance. And managing those two seemingly contrasting elements requires a little bit of magic. That's the Masseto magic we look for. The 2019 vintage delivers it in spades with lovely concentrated fruit, blackberry, integrated spice, tobacco, crushed slate, pencil shaving and lots of texture and fiber to push a lasting mouthfeel.
