Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Der Name Grand-Puy weist auf die günstige Lage des Weingutes auf den Anhöhen von Pauillac hin. Das Chateau erhebt sich inmitten der Weinberge.
Das 1855 klassifizierte Weingut Grand-Puy Lacoste nimmt seit dem Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts einen bedeutenden Platz in der Geschichte der Grand Crus von Bordeaux ein. Es gehörte jener Zeit einer Palamentarierfamilie, die das herrliche Terroir aus Kieselsteinen zur Geltung brachte. Und dem Weingut
zu Ansehen verhalf. Die folgenden Besitzer waren die Lacostes, die ihm seinen endgültigen Namen gaben, die Saint-Guirons und die Saint-Legiers.
1930 erwarb Raymond Dupin, eine originelle Persönlichkeit und ein Bonvivant, das Chateau bis 1978. Kurz vor seinem Tod verkaufte er es an die Familie Borie, die er für ihre harte Arbeit und ihr Engagement für die Grand Crus des Medocs schätzte.

The 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a powerful. exciting wine. That is the good news. But readers are going to have to be patient. as the 2016 shows very little of the upfront appeal that was so evident when it was in barrel. In the glass. the 2016 is sumptuous. vivid and incredibly detailed. with generous super-ripe red fruit and floral notes that develop with time. The wine's concentration and vibrancy lead me to think it will enjoy a very long life. Wow!

The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste gives up pure kirsch and red and black currants with violets and baking spices. Medium-bodied. firm and grainy. it's very expressive with good concentration and length.

James Suckling im Februar 2019:
A neoclassical edition of Grand-Puy-Lacoste. this has cedar. graphite. deeply integrated cedar and spicy-oak influence and a very fresh array of ripe blackberries. dark cherries and cassis. The palate is so seamless. It builds beautifully and delivers a long. seamless array of perfectly ripe dark fruit. swathed in fine. firm. ascending layers of tannins. As good as we have seen in recent vintages. this is a star of the vintage. Try from 2024.

Classy and integrated, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day and less forbiddingly structured version of this estate's brilliant 1982.

BEST EVER - gleich auf mit dem 1982er und 1949er
The 2019 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits notions of minty cassis, plums, loamy soil, burning embers and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety palate that’s deep and concentrated, its generous core of lively fruit concealing an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannin. Consisting of fully 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is another true classic from the Borie family.

6 Dec, 2021 – This is a very polished young wine with lemon-rind, blackcurrant, cedar and lavender character. It’s full, yet so refined and sophisticated, with floral undertones to the pretty fruit. The tannins are intense and long. Give this at least five or six years to soften. Try after 2025.

The 2019 is such a classy wine.

The 2019 Grand Puy Lacoste, as usual, requires plenty of aeration in the glass. Then boom! You get that gorgeous, classic Pauillac raspberry and blackberry fruit infused with cedar and pencil box scents. The harmonious, poised palate has wonderful focus, very fine tannins and a silky-smooth texture. As I remarked in my previous note, it’s very pliant and persistent, with a graphite-tinged finish. A glorious Grand Puy Lacoste that will need time to assimilate the oak – but hey, GPL lovers know the rules.
