The 2020 Haut-Bages-Libéral is supple and seamless, bursting with aromas of sweet dark berries, petals and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate. Succulent and polished, it will offer a broad drinking window. As readers will remember, this wine derives from biodynamically farmed vineyards located on clay-limestone and gravel soils to the north of Château Latour (as well as a parcel of gravel sandwiched between Pichon-Baron and Lynch-Bages).

While Justine Tesseron declined my request to taste at the property, I was able to acquire a bottle of the 2020 Pontet-Canet for review. The wine starts strong, wafting from the glass with attractive aromas of cherries, sweet berries and plum preserve mingled with lilac and licorice, but that's followed by a medium to full-bodied, firm and extracted palate that lacks the amplitude and flesh to conceal the rather drying tannins which dominate the earthy finish. It's an open secret among Bordeaux insiders that this estate—which has benefited from such significant and laudable investments and which was on such an upward trajectory through 2011—has been a perplexingly erratic performer since 2012, intermingling successful vintages with relative failures, and the 2020 only confirms that. While the 2020 isn't by any means a flawed wine, and time may well be kind to it, it doesn't transcend this estate's fifth growth status, even if this château's terroir clearly has the potential to.

Highly successful Pontet, one of the few Pauillacs that, for me, overperforms on its 2019. Inky purple with ruby reflections in colour. Lots of firm but upright tannins, a good dollop of graphite, pencil lead and cassis bud, there is depth through the mid palate shot through with wild blackberry, hawthorn, sage, rosemary and wild mint. It has personality, and is a little old school in the best possible way. Recommended. They have avoided the over-concentrated feel of some Pauillacs in the vintage, while remaining true to the appellation. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend, 50% new oak 35% amphoras, 15% one-year barrels. First full vintage for Mathieu Bessonnet who replaced the previous long-term director Jean-Michel Comme in 2020. 100% first wine, as it has been for the past four years. 45% will be aged in new oak barrels, 15% one year, 40% in amphoras. The mildew pressure was stressful in the early part of the year, but they had learnt from 2018, and brought in the manpower to get around the whole vineyard in a (very long) day, so their yields ended up being close to normal.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2020 Pauillac

Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2020 Château Lafite-Rothschild is a sensational effort checking in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that hit 12.8% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.94. As Lafite as Lafite gets, this ultra-classic reveals a dense ruby/plum hue as well as a tight, yet layered bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and subtle spice. Flawlessly balanced, deep, concentrated, and layered, it has an incredible mid-palate, building, perfect tannins, and a finish that leaves you salivating. Refined, elegant, and perfection are the buzz words here. Unfortunately, it's not for the instant gratification crowd, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this require 15 years to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window. It will probably hit its 100th birthday in fine form.

The 2020 Lafite Rothschild opens in the glass with a deep bouquet of cassis, black truffle, pencil shavings and violets. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, its broad attack segues into an ample core of fruit framed by supple, melting tannins. Seamless, layered and complete, it's richer and deeper pitched than the 2019, and its notably high pH of 3.94 likely means it will never shut down. It's a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, incorporating just a touch more Merlot from the plateau of Carruades than the 2019.

Amazing aromas here with tobacco, crushed stone, cigar box, currants, tar, and lead pencil, as well as spices, iron, and dried ginger. Medium- to full-bodied, with a density and tightness. Very compact and complex. Racy. Delicacy with strength. Orange peel undertones. A wine to contemplate. You must understand it to understand the great Lafites of the past and those of the future. Only 12.8% alcohol. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Best after 2030, but drink it if you have the chance taste it.

It has classic Pauillac character in its red, blue, and black fruits as well as graphite, cedar pencil, violet, and flower nuances. Seemingly from a cooler vintage with its purity, vibrancy, and focus, it nevertheless is concentrated and has ripe, gorgeous tannins, a great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. A deep, concentrated, flawlessly balanced 2020 that's built for the long haul, it needs a solid decade of cellaring and will be a 50+-year wine. Of the recent trilogy of 2018, 2019, and 2020, director Nicolas Glumineau has been consist in preferring the 2020, although I think at this point the nudge goes to the 2019. Regardless, these are all truly singular, magical wines that every reader will be thrilled to have in the cellar. It's a good time to be a Bordeaux lover!

The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is a striking wine and one that I regretted not purchasing en primeur as soon as it landed in my glass. Offering up complex aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings, loamy soil, cigar wrapper, espresso roast and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with terrific concentrated, beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Checking in at 12.8% alcohol, its incipient complexity, ineffable sense of completeness and exquisite balance mark it out as the purists' choice among the trio of 2018, 2019 and 2020. In this vintage, the lots that made it into the blend were largely confined to the core gravel terroirs that represent Mouton's heart, meaning that there's a little less to go around. This was the first vintage overseen by Mouton's new technical director, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, and he has begun with a flying start.

The 2020 Château Mouton Rothschild is in the running for the biggest, baddest, and most concentrated wine in the vintage. Based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petite Verdot brought up in new barrels, this inky hued beast of wine offers up classic Mouton ripe black fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and freshly sharpened pencil-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, backward 2020 with terrific purity, building, mouth-coating tannins, terrific balance, and one gorgeous finish. Unfortunately, as with many of the top 2020s, this isn't for those looking for instant gratification, and a decade (or more) of cellaring is advised. This hit 13.1% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.78. It will be a 50-, 60-, 70+-year wine.

The 2020 Haut-Batailley was opened for a good hour before I commenced penning my note. This will be matured for 14 months in 60% new oak. It gently unfolds in the glass to reveal blackberry, faint sea spray scents (a whiff of the old Gironde estuary) and just a touch of crushed stone. This is well defined though not powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins on the entry that frame the bright blackberry and raspberry fruit. This Pauillac conveys superb energy, especially toward the Japanese nori-infused finish, awakening and revivifying the senses. It is a classically sculpted and very harmonious Haut-Batailley that will give 25–30 years of drinking pleasure, but should be cellared for 5–6 years.

TDer Grand Vin stammt aus einem winzigen 11,15 Hektar großen Weinberg, der seit 1893 im Besitz der Familie Gratiot ist. Er befindet sich an der südlich ausgerichteten Côte Pavie, zwischen Château Pavie und Château Bellefont-Belcier, und besteht aus Ton auf Kalksteinböden. Der Weinberg wird derzeit mit einer massalen Selektion und einer höheren Pflanzdichte neu bepflanzt. Die Trauben werden von Hand sortiert, die Vinifikation erfolgt ausschließlich in Beton und dauert vier Wochen, der Ausbau erfolgt in 50% neuem französischen Eichenholz. Eine normale Mischung aus 90% Merlot und 10% Cabernet Franc, erinnert mich der 2020 Château Larcis Ducasse an den 2005er und gehört zu den besten Weinen am rechten Ufer. Er hat ein brillantes Parfum von roten und schwarzen Früchten, weißen Trüffeln, blättrigem Tabak und asiatischen Gewürzen. Dies führt zu einem vollmundigen, konzentrierten, kraftvollen Larcis-Ducasse mit ultrafeinen, aber aufbauenden Tanninen, perfekter Balance, einem kompakten Mittelgaumen und einem großartigen Abgang. Eine schöne Leistung, die sinnlicher und nahtloser ist als Thienponts strukturierterer, düsterer Pavie Macquin. Der 2020 Larcis Ducasse entfaltet sich im Glas mit Aromen von Kirschen, Brombeeren, Lorbeerblatt, Rosenblättern und Lakritze. Mittel- bis vollmundig, vielschichtig und konzentriert, mit feinen Tanninen, lebhaften Säuren und einem geschmeidigen, fleischigen Profil, endet er mit einem langen, expansiven Abgang. Dies ist ein besonderer Erfolg im Jahr 2020. Unter der Leitung von Nicolas Thienpont und David Suire seit 2002 nimmt Larcis Ducasse einen 11 Hektar großen Block neben Pavie ein. Rund 15% des Weinbergs befinden sich auf dem Plateau am oberen Ende des Hangs, aber diese Parzellen werden derzeit umstrukturiert und tragen vorerst nur einen kleinen Teil zur Mischung bei, sodass es sich wirklich um einen "vin de coteaux" handelt—einen Wein von den Hängen. Die Böden bestehen hauptsächlich aus Molasses du Fronsadais-Ton über Kalkstein, aber eine Vielfalt von Expositionen und Schichten bedeutet, dass dies ein von Natur aus komplexes Terroir ist. Der Larcis Ducasse 2020 ist ein echter Hingucker. Hell und vertikal im Gefühl, besitzt der 2020er eine enorme Energie, die zu seinem superklassischen Aufbau passt. Strahlen von Tannin und Säure geben dem Wein seine Form. Dunkle Kirsch- und Granatapfelfrucht treten hervor, mit einem Hauch von Blutorangensäure, die Frische verleiht. Graphit, getrocknete Kräuter, Menthol, Gewürze und Zeder treten mit etwas Überredung hervor, aber der 2020er ist sehr jung und sehr primär. Das verheißt natürlich eine großartige Zukunft. Der 2020er ist schlichtweg ein aufregender Larcis und eines der besten Angebote in ganz Bordeaux.

Dieser Wein stammt von den kiesigen und schluffigen Böden des Schwemmlandtals von Turckheim. Obwohl dieser Weinberg flach ist, genießt er eine intensive Sonneneinstrahlung, vor allem am Abend, da er viel später von den Vogesen beschattet wird als die meisten nach Süden oder Osten ausgerichteten Hänge. Die Böden sind außerdem gut drainiert und sehr trocken. Die Erträge sind von Natur aus niedrig, so dass dieser Wein oft sehr intensiv und aromatisch ist und einen guten Reifegrad aufweist. Der 2021 gärte über ein Jahr, bevor er trocken wurde, da der Säuregehalt in diesem Jahrgang besonders hoch ist, was dem Wein ein fast kalkiges Mundgefühl verleiht.

Die Verkostungsnotiz der Domaine Zind-Humbrecht (Januar 2023):

Blassgelbe Farbe. Gut fokussierte und dichte Nase, die einen viel mineralischeren/terroirgeprägten Weinstil zeigt, als für dieses Terroir üblich: Zitrusfrüchte, nasse Steine, Morgentau... Scharfer, aber eleganter Gaumen. Dieser Wein zeigt sich heute sehr gut mit einer spitzen und präzisen Textur. Es gibt keine Anzeichen von zusätzlicher Rundheit am Gaumen, wie sie für alle Weine des Jahrgangs 2021 typisch ist! Trockener und knackiger Abgang mit schöner Spannung und speichelleckender Säure, ein normales Ergebnis für sehr kleine Erträge.

Farbe: Strahlendes, intensives Goldgelb. Nase: Der 2021er Riesling Roche Roulée zeigt sich mit ausgeprägter Mineralität und „Nomen est Omen“ steinigem Charakter im Duft. Aufgrund seiner Jugendlichkeit wirkt er noch kompakt und etwas verschlossen. Nach dem Umfüllen in die Karaffe treten neben den spannenden Feuersteinnoten Aromen von Aprikosen, Orangen, Orangenschale, kandiertem Ingwer und Mango hervor, begleitet von Honig, Vanille und Trockengebäck. Mit weiterer Reife werden sich diese Aromen intensivieren, da schlummert viel Facette und dichte Komplexität, die es zu entdecken gilt. Gaumen: Attacke am Gaumen, die Säure scheint schier zu explodieren, perfekt eingebettet in den gelben und exotischen Fruchtschmelz. Salzige Mineralität packt den Gaumen, seine komplexe Frische und feine Gerbstoffstruktur geben ihm wunderschöne Länge und Tiefe.

Das Flaggschiff der Domaine du Pegau

Die Cuvée Réservée der Domaine du Pegau ist ein Verschnitt aus 13 Rebsorten, hauptsächlich Grenache, Syrah und Mourvèdre, und zeigt die typischen Eigenschaften der Böden von Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Die dunkelrote Farbe wird noch von einem violetten Schimmer begleitet. In der Nase gilt es die reifen Früchte wie Sauerkirschen und Himbeeren zu entdecken, dazu Wacholderbeeren, schwarzer Pfeffer und Garrigue. Nach einigen Jahren Reifung werden die Aromen von Pflaumen, getrockneten Steinfrüchten, Leder, Pelz und Sandelholz geprägt sein. Am Gaumen ist er rund, üppig und kräftig mit weichen Tanninen. Mit der Zeit wird er sich zu einem komplexeren und würzigeren Wein entwickeln.

"Solide, mit dem eleganteren Stil des Jahrgangs und der klassischen Pégau-Güte", notierte Jeb Dunnuck im November 2022. "Viele pfeffrige Kräuter, Leder, provenzalische Gewürze und einige fleischige Noten bestimmen das Bouquet, und am Gaumen ist er mittelkräftig bis vollmundig und ausgewogen, mit viel klassischem Pégau-Stil und Flair." Und korrigiert seine Bewertung gegenüber der aus März 2021 stammenden nach oben. 93 - 95 Punkte vergibt er nun, statt 92 - 94.

Der Amarone ist einer der vielen sagenumwobenen Weine Italiens. Die Trauben für diese Ikone werden vollreif geerntet und danach vier Monate kontrolliert getrocknet, wodurch sich die Konzentration aller Inhaltsstoffe der Traube enorm verdichtet und zu einem Ergebnis führt, wie man es sonst nicht finden kann. Der Tedeschi Marne 180 Amarone della Valpolicella 2015 macht da keine Ausnahme: Nach einer alkoholischen Gärung von 40 bis 60 Tagen lagert dieser feine Tropfen für drei Jahre in Eichenholzfässern und kommt nach der Abfüllung erst sechs Monate später auf den Markt, damit sich der Wein erstmal beruhigen kann. Auch hier setzt Tedeschi auf die traditionsreiche Weinbereitung mit einem breiten Spektrum an autochtonen Rebsorten: 30% Corvina. 30% Corvinone. 30% Rondinella und insgesamt 10% von Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara und Dindarella geben das beste Venetiens in einen einzigen Wein. Im Glas zeigt sich der Tedeschi Marne 180 Amarone della Valpolicella 2015 mit einem tief dunklen Rubinrot, die Aromen springen einen förmlich an und füllen die Nase auf Anhieb mit vollreifen, süßen, dunklen Früchten wie Blaubeeren, Schwarzkirschen und Cassis. Durch die dreijährige Lagerung im Fass gesellt sich noch etwas Vanille mit ins Aromenspektrum. Wer im Mund jetzt plumpes Fruchtkompott erwartet, wird bitterlich enttäuscht. Samtweiches aber präsentes Tannin. dunkles Dörrobst und eine ins Bitter gehende (hier liegt der Ursprung des Namens Amarone. vom italienischen amaro = bitter) Note, die erfrischt, dem Wein Struktur und Eleganz verleiht.

Die Bezeichnung Marne 180 beschreibt übrigens 2 Besonderheiten des Weins, die die Individualisten bei Tedeschi natürlich nicht unerwähnt lassen wollen: "Marne" bezeichnet den Boden, zu Deutsch "Mergel". Hier wachsen die Trauben für den Tedeschi Marne 180 Amarone della Valpolicella an mindestens 20 Jahre alten Reben. Die "180" im Namen steht für die Ausrichtung der Weinbergslagen, von einer zur anderen Himmelrichtung im exakten 180°-Winkel.

2021 is clearly the finest vintage of the trio of 2020, 2021 and 2022, and the bottled 2021 Pétalos delivers what the unbottled samples promised: a wine with lower alcohol than ever (13.5%), lighter, a little narrower but with the juiciness of Mencía that seems to come back after some time in bottle. It has lots of notes of aromatic herbs, with some similar aromas to the La Faraona. It's quite expressive and showy, very pleasant and easy to drink, very gourmand, with a velvety mouthfeel and very fine tannins. 320,000 bottles and 2,567 magnums produced. It was bottled between November 2022 and March 2023. Approachable now, very hedonistic.

Again, the 2020 vintage falls into line in the glass here. The 2020 Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay is more complete and more harmonious than either of the vintages on either side of it—certainly texturally, it is mellifluous and flowing. Through the finish, there are notes of almond skin, meal, plump orchard fruit and complex exotic spice. This is extremely appealing. Attractive. Seductive.

Geschmacksnoten
Aromen von Mandarinenschalen, weißen Blüten und Feuerstein weichen Steinobstmark und einem verführerischen Nougatelement. Cremig, nussig und texturiert ist dieser Chardonnay kraftvoll in der Fruchtkonzentration und zurückhaltend durch eine präzise Säurelinie. Ein vielschichtiger Wein mit Ausdauer, Kraft und Struktur und eine echte Repräsentation dieses Weinbergs im Süden von Margaret River, der von der Küste landeinwärts liegt.

Weinberg
100 % Hazel’s Vineyard. Unser südlichster Weinberg, der weiter landeinwärts liegt als unsere Burnside- und Calgardup-Weinberge. Hazel’s kombiniert kühlende Einflüsse des Südlichen Ozeans mit einem nördlichen Aspekt und viel Sonnenschein. Bodentyp: Eisenstein-Kieslehm. Wein machen Handverlesen, ganze Traube gepresst und direkt auf Eichenholz mit vollem Feststoffgehalt übertragen. Von der heimischen Hefe im Barrique vergoren (ca. 30% neu). Nach der Gärung bleiben die Fässer 4 Monate lang kühl, aber ungeschwefelt, um die autolytische Aktivität zu fördern. Batonnage alle zwei Wochen basierend auf Geschmack und partiellem MLF, um die hohe natürliche Säure dieses Jahrgangs auszugleichen. Der Wein wurde im Dezember mit voller Hefe in den Tank abgefüllt und verbrachte zwei Monate auf der Hefe im Tank, bevor er im Februar 2021 in Flaschen abgefüllt wurde.

Vintage-Bericht
Wir wurden 2020 in Margaret River mit nahezu perfekten Wachstumsbedingungen gesegnet. Ein Frühling, der wärmer als gewöhnlich ist, ein trockener, sonniger Sommer und kühle Nächte. Signifikante tägliche Temperaturschwankungen sorgten für perfekte Reifebedingungen in all unseren trocken gewachsenen Weinbergen. Keine Krankheiten und praktisch kein Vogeldruck (insbesondere zu Beginn der Ernte) bedeutete, dass wir schön saubere Früchte mit idealem Reife- und Geschmacksniveau pflücken konnten ... Ein wahrer Genuss für unser Winzerteam. Der einzige Nachteil waren die außergewöhnlich niedrigen Erträge bei allen Sorten. Unser trocken bewirtschafteter Weinberg reagierte auf die trockeneren saisonalen Bedingungen, indem er winzige und leichte Trauben mit kleinen Beeren produzierte. Dadurch hat die Frucht eine unglaubliche Konzentration und eine schöne natürliche Säure bewahrt.

The 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is mouthfilling and obvious in its outlay of flavor in the mouth—yellow peach, apricot, Golden Delicious apple, beeswax/lanolin and ripe lime flesh. The flutter of acidity that feathers the fruit is compelling and alluring in its power and juiciness. An exciting wine. It's a wine I want to drink (I will; the perks) and a wine I am enjoying considering too. It's intellectual and sensorial/corporeal in equal measure. The Hunting Hill Vineyard was planted in 1982 and overlooks Mate's Vineyard. This is a pleasurable, exciting, fleshy, complex, salty, kaleidoscopic wine. Excellent. Recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

h, aber der Hunting Hill des Jahrgangs 2020 ist noch besser. Der Kumeu River Chardonnay Hunting Hill 2020 ist in seiner Terroir-Typizität sehr ausgeprägt, mit durchdringenden Zitronen-/Limettenfrüchten und floralen Noten in der Nase, Reichtum und Volumen im Mund, gefolgt von anhaltender Säure und Mineralität im Abgang. Dies ist ein absolutes klassisches Beispiel dafür, wie großartig die Chardonnay-Traube sein kann: Ein wunderschön kraftvoller und dennoch eleganter und komplexer Wein, der lange gelagert werden kann.

Possibly the most complete Hunting Hill Chardonnay I've tasted in youth, the 2020 provides a harmonious, melt-in-your-mouth impression. It has breadth and concentration but retains a sense of elegance on the midpalate before finishing with precision and length. Yes, there's a little bit of flint character too, but then Hunting Hill is known to be reductive; give it time. Like Forrest Gump, it runs through a finish line and keeps on going effortlessly. There's no box of chocolates here, though; it's all white nectarine, citrus, white flowers and a touch of smoked nuts.
