Erntezeitpunkt: zwischen 24. September und 5. October Dramatische Ernteeinbuße. nur ein Drittel der normalen Menge konnte produziert werden. Sehr kompakter und dichter Kern. Die Nase ist unglaublich süsslich viele dunkle Früchte. eine derart fruchtige und komplexe Nase habe ich auf diesem Weingut noch nicht gerochen. Ganz klar ein Wein wie aus einer anderen Welt. Im Mund unglaublich vibrierend, satt, druckvoll, frisch, verspielt, komplex und unendlich lang. Einfach eine neue Dimension. Leider erwartet uns nur ein drittel der üblichen Produktion. wie viele Flaschen davon für den Primeur Verkauf freigegeben werden, dass ist die grosse Frage und zu welchem Preis, fest steht, der Wein ist einmalig und darf in keiner Pontet Canet Vertikale fehlen.

The 2018 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 55% oak barriques and 45% amphorae. Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with an atomic perfume of raspberry pie, blackcurrant pastilles, rose oil and Chinese five spice, giving way to suggestions of cinnamon stick, dusty soil, pencil lead and underbrush. The rich, seductive, full-bodied palate is a hedonist's dream, delivering layer-upon-layer of black and red berry preserves with loads of fragrant accents, a beautifully firm yet plush texture and tons of freshness, finishing long with a whole firework display of exotic spices. This is pretty much out-of-the-gate delicious, but it has the backbone to evolve over three decades or more.

When I tasted the 2018 Pontet-Canet in barrel I described it as a "freak of nature." The 2018 is more than that, it is a freak of nature. Made from yields of just ten hectoliters per hectare, the 2018 possesses off the charts richness, phenomenal balance and head-spinning intensity. Crushed red berries, flowers, mint, cedar and rose petal saturate the palate in a Pauillac of breath-taking richness. The silkiest of tannins frame the phenomenally pure, long finish. This is a towering achievement from the Tesseron family and former Technical Director Jean-Michel Comme, who together spearheaded biodynamic farming in Bordeaux and built the present-day estate around a philosophy of non-interventionalist winemaking. In 2018, grapes were crushed solely by hand. Because of the tiny yields, the entire production was vinified in Pontet-Canet's new smaller concrete vats. All winemaking was done manually, without the aid of external temperature control or electricity. Put in another way, if Lalou Bize-Leroy made Bordeaux, it would taste like this.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Einladendes Bukett mit einem Hauch reife Feigen und Erdbeerkonfit, dunkle Beerenfrucht unterlegt, ein Hauch von Lakritze, rauchige Gewürznuancen im Hintergrund. Komplex und stoffig, sehr kraftvoll und zugleich mineralisch, präsente, reife Tannine, feiner Nougat, der Gerbstoff verleiht dem Wein eine unglaubliche Länge, macht ihn im Moment zugleich weniger zugänglich, gute Frische unterlegt, große Länge, ein Wein mit sicherer Zukunft, der allerdings auch noch viel Zeit benötigt. An unevolved, almost primordial 2018, the 2018 Château Pontet Canet sports a dense purple hue as well as loads of blue and black fruits, damp earth, tobacco, candied violets, and graphite-laced aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, serious mid-palate depth, and building tannins, it's mostly potential at this point, but it's a beautiful wine in the making. A decade of bottle age is going to be required, though, so it's not for those seeking instant gratification.

Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Duhart-Milon is a real powerhouse. Black cherry, gravel, spice, espresso and savory herbs infuse the 2018 with notable depth and power. A brooding, virile wine, the Duhart-Milon packs a serious punch. I would give it a few years to soften. The 2018 has really come together since en primeur. In fact, the bottled wine bears little semblance to the en primeur sample, which is a very good thing. There is real density and weight here, with all of the natural richness of the year.

Sweet berries and cherries on the nose with sweet tobacco, lead pencil and blackcurrants. It’s full-bodied and very rich with layers of fruit and creamy tannins intertwined. Extremely long and creamy. Great Duhart. Try after 2026.

The 2018 Duhart-Milon is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. With 14% alcohol, it has a deep garnet-purple color and a seductively ripe, opulent nose of plum preserves, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of spice cake, potpourri, sandalwood and eucalyptus oil. Medium-bodied, it is jam-packed with rich, spicy black fruit preserves, with floral accents and a velvety texture, finishing long and fragrant. So. Good.

Salziger Nachgeschmack, wenn auch nicht übermäßig lang, dies ist ein sehr vielversprechender Zweitwein.

Chateau Tronquoy 2019 Saint Estephe

James Suckling: Dies ist wirklich komplex und parfümiert, mit einem äußerst attraktiven Bouquet aus Blumen und dunklen Früchten. Eine ernsthafte Flasche.

William Kelley: Wie ich Anfang dieses Jahres schrieb, hat sich der 2019er Tronquoy-Lalande wunderschön entwickelt und zeigt sich weiterhin sehr gut. Er bietet einladende Aromen von wilden Beeren, Gewürzen, Rosenblättern und Cassis. Mittel bis vollmundig, vielschichtig und sinnlich, mit lebendigen Säuren, reifen Tanninen und einem langen, lebhaften Abgang, erinnert er an einen etwas sonnenverwöhnteren und extrovertierten Bruder des großartigen 2016er Jahrgangs an dieser Adresse. Wie ich Anfang dieses Jahres schrieb, ist Tronquoy-Lalande ein Weingut, das viel bekannter sein sollte. Dies war der zweite Weinberg, der in Saint-Estèphe bepflanzt wurde, nach dem Clos von Calon-Ségur, aber sein royalistischer Besitzer nahm aufgrund seiner Ablehnung von Napoléon III. nicht an der Klassifikation von 1855 teil. Der Weinberg selbst besteht aus einem einzigen 30 Hektar großen Block auf einem acht Meter tiefen Kiesrücken direkt hinter den Châteaux Meyney und Montrose. Mit dem Jahrgang 2021 bio-zertifiziert, hat Tronquoy-Lalande niemals Herbizide gesehen; und nach der Übernahme durch Olivier und Martin Bouygues im Jahr 2006 wurde die Kellerei mit Input des verstorbenen Jean-Philippe Delmas neu gestaltet und mit zweistufigen Edelstahltanks nach dem Modell von Château Haut-Brion ausgestattet. Unter der fähigen Leitung von Yves Delsol, der seit 30 Jahren auf dem Weingut arbeitet und somit jedes Detail kennt, ist der Stil nahtlos, komplex und konzentriert, mit einer strukturellen Eleganz, die die Qualität dieser Kiesböden mehr widerspiegelt als irgendwelche Stereotypen der Rustikalität von Saint-Estèphe. Tatsächlich wird dieses Weingut bei jeder Überarbeitung der Klassifikation von 1855 eindeutig den Status eines klassifizierten Wachstums gewinnen. All of the intensity of the year comes through nicely and yet the personality of Armailhac is evident also. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. There is a bit more breadth and richness that is the result of yields that were just 32 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to the more typical 42 or so. It was a vintage marked by heat stress, small berries and lower juice to skin ratio, as well as some parcels affected by mildew.

The aromas to this are really amazing, with a potpourri of spices and dried flowers, as well as redcurrants, sweet plums and even some peaches. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate in an encompassing yet always elegant and pure way. It’s succulent and unadulterated. Like crushed, perfectly ripened grapes. The length is rather endless. The tannins build. Fabulous young red. 35% in amphora and the rest in 50% new oak and 15% one-year oak. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. The 2019 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty, but it needs time.

The 2019 Pontet Canet was picked from September 23 until October 10, finishing with the Petit Verdot, and bottled in mid-June/July. My sample, tasted at the property, was decanted. Matured in 50% new oak and 35% concrete amphora, this is endowed with an intense, enveloping bouquet of opulent blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed violet and light fig aromas, becoming more floral with aeration and revealing crushed violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with layered black fruit, cracked black pepper, hints of pencil lead and a splash of soy. This is one of the most powerful Pauillac wines that I encountered this vintage, very juicy and with plenty of rondeur on the very spicy finish. This should give three decades of drinking pleasure.

Der 2018 Montrose ist eine Mischung aus 72 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Merlot, 6 % Cabernet Franc und 2 % Petit Verdot. Ein kraftvoller Vollkörper-Wein sowie ein perfekter Wein, der 2018 Château Montrose ist eine Endmischung aus 72 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Merlot und 6 % Cabernet Franc, die in 60 % neuen französischen Eichenfässern gereift wurde. Er prahlt mit einer tiefen lila Färbung sowie fantastischen Ebenen von Crème de Cassis und rauchigen Brombeerfrüchten und Noten von Tabak, Bleistiftmine, verbrannter Erde und Schokolade. Er ist tief, opulent und unglaublich konzentriert am Gaumen, mit keiner Mangel an Mittel-Palate-Tiefe, Tanninen oder Länge. Er erinnert mich ein wenig an eine frischere Version des 2003ers, obwohl 2018 mehr Cabernet Sauvignon und weniger Merlot enthalten sind. While Justine Tesseron declined my request to taste at the property, I was able to acquire a bottle of the 2020 Pontet-Canet for review. The wine starts strong, wafting from the glass with attractive aromas of cherries, sweet berries and plum preserve mingled with lilac and licorice, but that's followed by a medium to full-bodied, firm and extracted palate that lacks the amplitude and flesh to conceal the rather drying tannins which dominate the earthy finish. It's an open secret among Bordeaux insiders that this estate—which has benefited from such significant and laudable investments and which was on such an upward trajectory through 2011—has been a perplexingly erratic performer since 2012, intermingling successful vintages with relative failures, and the 2020 only confirms that. While the 2020 isn't by any means a flawed wine, and time may well be kind to it, it doesn't transcend this estate's fifth growth status, even if this château's terroir clearly has the potential to.

Highly successful Pontet, one of the few Pauillacs that, for me, overperforms on its 2019. Inky purple with ruby reflections in colour. Lots of firm but upright tannins, a good dollop of graphite, pencil lead and cassis bud, there is depth through the mid palate shot through with wild blackberry, hawthorn, sage, rosemary and wild mint. It has personality, and is a little old school in the best possible way. Recommended. They have avoided the over-concentrated feel of some Pauillacs in the vintage, while remaining true to the appellation. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend, 50% new oak 35% amphoras, 15% one-year barrels. First full vintage for Mathieu Bessonnet who replaced the previous long-term director Jean-Michel Comme in 2020. 100% first wine, as it has been for the past four years. 45% will be aged in new oak barrels, 15% one year, 40% in amphoras. The mildew pressure was stressful in the early part of the year, but they had learnt from 2018, and brought in the manpower to get around the whole vineyard in a (very long) day, so their yields ended up being close to normal.

The 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is mouthfilling and obvious in its outlay of flavor in the mouth—yellow peach, apricot, Golden Delicious apple, beeswax/lanolin and ripe lime flesh. The flutter of acidity that feathers the fruit is compelling and alluring in its power and juiciness. An exciting wine. It's a wine I want to drink (I will; the perks) and a wine I am enjoying considering too. It's intellectual and sensorial/corporeal in equal measure. The Hunting Hill Vineyard was planted in 1982 and overlooks Mate's Vineyard. This is a pleasurable, exciting, fleshy, complex, salty, kaleidoscopic wine. Excellent. Recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Possibly the most complete Hunting Hill Chardonnay I've tasted in youth, the 2020 provides a harmonious, melt-in-your-mouth impression. It has breadth and concentration but retains a sense of elegance on the midpalate before finishing with precision and length. Yes, there's a little bit of flint character too, but then Hunting Hill is known to be reductive; give it time. Like Forrest Gump, it runs through a finish line and keeps on going effortlessly. There's no box of chocolates here, though; it's all white nectarine, citrus, white flowers and a touch of smoked nuts.
