The 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is quite powerful and dense. Aging. and specifically. the barrel regime of 18 months in oak (60% new) has left the 2016 with a heavy toast/torrefaction quality that at present overpowers the dark fruit and Cabernet aromatics the wine showed from barrel. Frankly. I liked the 2016 more en primeur.

Chateau Pontet Canet 2016 mit 98 Parker Punkten bewertetLisa Perrotti Brown 30. November 2018

The blend of the 2016 Pontet-Canet is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon. 30% Merlot. 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Around 55% of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels. 15% in two-year-old barrels and 35% in cement amphorae for 16 months. Deep garnet-purple colored. it opens with opulent scents of plum preserves. spice cake. hoisin and crème de cassis with fragrant wafts of potpourri. wood smoke and rose hip tea. Medium to full-bodied. rich and decadent. with loads of spicy layers. it has a firm. velvety texture with great freshness and incredible depth. finishing very long and on a compelling mineral note.

2016 marks the 40th vintage at Pontet-Canet for Alfred Tesseron. Winemaker Jean-Michel Comme mentioned it was wet at the beginning of the year. but thankfully the weather changed in late June. Thus. 2016 was a more normal/typical mildew year. so the disease pressure wasn’t too much of an issue. Then it was very dry until fall. He believes the vintage could be compared to 1961 or 2010. The result is an uninhibited. truly singular showing of Pontet-Canet this year—perhaps the richest. most sumptuous and hedonic expression of the vintage of all the great Left Bank wines.

The 2016 Pontet-Canet is absolutely breathtaking. Powerful. ample and racy in the glass. the 2016 is one of the most exquisitely well-balanced young Pontet-Canets I can remember tasting. Savory. high-toned aromatics and brisk mineral notes lend energy and delineation as this vivid wonderfully alive wine opens up in the glass. The flavors are dark and incisive. but it is the wine's total sense of harmony that is most compelling. All of the elements are simply in the right place. The 2016 is tremendous. It's as simple as that. As is often the case. Pontet-Canet is one of the most singular wines in Bordeaux. Alfred Tesseron could have chosen to play things safe when he took over the management of the estate in the mid-1990s. Instead. he chose a very different path. No proprietor in Bordeaux has taken more risks over the last two decades than Alfred Tesseron. A commitment to biodynamic farming. sustainability across the entire estate more broadly. and the adoption of new concepts for Bordeaux. such as aging a portion of the wine in terra cotta. set Pontet-Canet apart from other properties in Pauillac and the Left Bank. Not surprisingly. the wine is also starkly different from the wines of neighboring estates.

The 2016 Clerc Milon is striking. Here. the interplay of dense fruit and supporting structure make for a wonderfully complete and expressive wine. Dark blue stone fruit. licorice. lavender. spice and menthol are all beautifully delineated in the glass. The aromatic and structure of both Cabernets come through with notable energy and precision. The 2016 has enough density and pedigree to drink well for many years to come.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Clerc Milon leaps from the glass with beautiful scents of chocolate-covered cherries. plum preserves and crushed blackcurrants with suggestions of lilacs. cardamom. underbrush and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied. the palate has a firm frame of finely grained tannins and seamless freshness lifting the perfumed fruit to a nice long finish.

The 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a powerful. exciting wine. That is the good news. But readers are going to have to be patient. as the 2016 shows very little of the upfront appeal that was so evident when it was in barrel. In the glass. the 2016 is sumptuous. vivid and incredibly detailed. with generous super-ripe red fruit and floral notes that develop with time. 100 Punkte von Jeb DunnuckAlong with the Château Lafite, the 2016 Château Mouton Rothschild is the wine of the vintage from the Médoc and is a truly profound, magical, blockbuster wine in every sense. It’s based on 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in new French oak. Boasting a saturated purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of thick black fruits, lead pencil shavings, new saddle leather, and burning embers, with just a hint of its oak upbringing, this beauty hits the palate with a mammoth amount of fruit and texture yet stays fresh, pure, and light on its feet, with a thrilling sense of minerality as well as building tannins on the finish. It’s one of the most profound young wines I’ve ever tasted, and while it will probably keep for three-quarters of a decade, it offers pleasure even today. Bravo!

100 Punkte Vinous für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2016 PauillacAntonio Galloni Januar 2019:

A towering. thrilling wine. the 2016 Mouton Rothschild is unbelievably beautiful today. Aromatics. fruit density and vertical structure all come together. In the glass. the 2016 is remarkably vivid and powerful. and yet a gentler. more feminine side emerges with time in the glass. The intense. mineral. savory profile recalls the 1986. but the 2016 has more grace. inner sweetness and sophistication than that wine. Even so. the 2016 is going to need at least a number of years in bottle before it starts drinking well. although it won't be the bruiser the 1986 remains to this day. This is breathtaking wine from Mouton. Tecnical Director Philippe Dhalluin and his team.

100 Parker Punkte für Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2016 PauillacLisa Perrotti Brown am 30.11.2018

The 2016 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon. 15% Merlot. 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. with the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vinified together. It has a very deep purple-black color and slowly slides out of the glass with spicy notes of Sichuan pepper. cloves and cinnamon stick giving way to a core of perfumed black fruits and florals—blackcurrant cordial. candied violets. blackberry compote. rose hips and black plums—plus suggestions of espresso. damp soil. tar and beef drippings. Medium-bodied. the palate is very firmly structured and jam-packed with latent energy about to burst. offering superbly ripe. grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the intense floral and black fruit layers and finishing very long and very minerally. Powerful. profound wine.

Mouton’s congenial managing director. Philippe Dhalluin. was unfortunately in Napa while I was in Bordeaux in October. so I was hosted by Eric Tourbier—Mouton’s technical director—and Clerc-Milon’s winemaker. Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy. While discussing the particularly abundant range of aroma/flavor compounds I was perceiving in the 2016 reds. Danjoy commented. “When you have a wet spring. you tend to have more aromatic precursors. Also. it was a long maturation period. The vine made a lot of aromatic components. The gap between the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon for ripening was very long. In fact. Cabernet was very late this year. We didn’t know if the Cabernet Sauvignon was going to make it! The big surprise for us was the Cabernet Franc—all of it was delicious. We used it all in the grand vin at Clerc Milon.” When we came to taste Le Petit Mouton and Mouton Rothschild. Eric Tourbier. smiling like the cat that got the cream. said simply. “It was a dry summer. We had very small berries and a good level of ripeness.” He then added. matter-of-factly. “I’ve been at Mouton for 30 years. I think this is my best vintage. The 2016 may be compared to the 1986?” Maybe. but while I’m a huge lover of the incredibly provocative and sometimes formidable 1986 (I had it again just a few weeks ago). I’m thinking this 2016 is going to give a lot more hedonic pleasure in its first 25 years in bottle than the 1986—just coming around now—certainly did.

100 Punkte Vinous | Neal Martin für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2016 PauillacNeal Martin im Januar 2019:

The 2016 Mouton Rothschild bowled me over when I tasted it from barrel. Philippe Dhalluin compares it to the 1986 in terms of intensity of fruit. although there is more maturity and refinement in the tannins apropos of the 2016. Bottled in July 2018. this has an intense bouquet with pixelated black fruit. crushed stone. hints of blue fruit and a touch of India ink. But it is the delineation and focus that take your breath away. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin framing the pure black currant and cassis fruit. The acidity is pitch-perfect. and there is a gentle but insistent grip toward the extraordinarily long finish. Racking my brains to think of another Mouton Rothschild that I have tasted over the last 20 years that was as good as this. I simply cannot come up with one.

100 Punkte James Suckling für den Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2016 PauillacJames Suckling im Februar 2019:

Dark ruby. purple color. Aromas of blackcurrants. black truffle. crushed stone. licorice and hints of tar. Full-bodied. deep and vertical on the palate. drawing you in and down. The structure is very tannic and powerful. yet the tannins are folded into the wine. One of the most powerful Moutons ever for me. Try after 2027.

James Suckling am 04.04.2017

This is a phenomenal. muscular red that shows incredible power and depth. Full-bodied and with great concentration of tannins but this remains agile and polished. The form to this is stupendous. Such precision and clarity. The new 1986 but better. (bei beiden Verkostungseindrücken vergab James Suckling die 100 Punkte)

The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. more saline and marine-influenced than Pichon Baron. and a tad spicier toward the finish. which is one of the most impressively persistent I have ever encountered in a Pichon-Lalande. fanning out with gusto and leaving the mouth still tingling 60 seconds after it has departed.
