The 2016 Pichon Baron is seamless and racy from start to finish. Sensual and super-expressive. with soft contours. silky tannins and exceptional finesse. Pichon Baron is one of the more accessible wines in its peer group today. Plum. mocha. leather. spice and chocolate all build effortlessly. As outstanding as Pichon Baron is. the 2016 gives the impression it is playing things safe. It would be nice to see a little more daring and risk.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers a suave and seductive nose of warm red and black currants. black plum preserves. truffles. tapenade and rose hip tea with touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice plus a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied. firmly structured and packed with mineral and exotic spice-laced black fruits. it finishes very long with compelling herbal sparks.

The concentration and largesse of the 2016 Pichon Baron is apparent from the get-go with incredibly alluring. ripe and expansive fruit aromas in the blackberry. dark-cherry. mulberry and plum zone. Espresso and cedar. as well as a slate-like. stony mineral edge add complexity. The palate has incredible depth. drive and detail. Fine and plush tannins stretch the palate in every direction. So fresh and vivacious. this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024.

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron electrifies the olfactory sense with a stunning bouquet of intense blackberry. cedar and graphite aromas that are quintessential Pauillac. Over a few minutes. it blossoms in the glass. gaining more and more depth. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tarry black fruit. cedar and truffle. dovetailing into a saline. peppery finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Christian Seely and his team have imbued recent vintages of this Pauillac with unerring symmetry. and the 2016 can be added to the canon of triumphs.

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot picked between 3 and 18 October at 39 hectoliters per hectare for estate (therefore the Grand Vin will be less). It is matured in 80% new oak and 20% one year old for 18 months. It has a very intense. extremely pure bouquet with blackberry. bilberry. cedar and graphite notes; it is a straight-down-the-fairway Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with a very tensile opening. that seam of graphite penetrating the black fruit. There is a wonderful structure here. unapologetically classic in style with just the right amount of austerity on the aristocratic finish. The aftertaste is incredibly long. lingering after two or three minutes in the mouth. This is a majestic Pichon-Baron and it may well to surpass both the 2009 or 2010.

I have been waiting for this for a long time. It’s a remake of the legendary 1990 Pichon Baron. Full body. ultra-polished yet powerful tannins and a glorious finish. The will evolve beautifully. The core of fruit and tannins are great. A truly great Pichon Baron.

Medium to full-bodied. rich and fantastically concentrated. the generous fruit is superbly framed by firm. ripe. grainy tannins with tons of pepper. cinnamon and cloves layers coming through on the finish. Truly. a legendary Lynch Bages!

The 2016 Lynch-Bages delivers on its promise from barrel with an intense blackberry. cedar and mineral-driven bouquet that actually reminds me of Lafite-Rothschild. A faint dark chocolate scent makes a brief appearance. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin. pure black fruit and a velvety texture. There is wonderful structure and focus on the finish. followed by a persistent saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Lynch-Bages. easily the best since the twin titans of 1989 and 1990.

From bottle. the 2016 is quite a bit more powerful than it was from barrel. Dark flavors and potent tannins give the 2016 a distinctly brooding. somber feel. Sage. lavender. menthol. licorice and wild cherry are all laced into the potent. dramatically sweeping finish. Readers should not be in a rush. as the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so. it is super-impressive today.

One of the most structured St. Pierre’s in years. A blend of 73 per cent cabernet sauvignon. 21 per cent merlot and six per cent cabernet franc. Try from 2024.

Along with the Château Lafite, the 2016 Château Mouton Rothschild is the wine of the vintage from the Médoc and is a truly profound, magical, blockbuster wine in every sense. It’s based on 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in new French oak. Boasting a saturated purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of thick black fruits, lead pencil shavings, new saddle leather, and burning embers, with just a hint of its oak upbringing, this beauty hits the palate with a mammoth amount of fruit and texture yet stays fresh, pure, and light on its feet, with a thrilling sense of minerality as well as building tannins on the finish. It’s one of the most profound young wines I’ve ever tasted, and while it will probably keep for three-quarters of a decade, it offers pleasure even today. Bravo!

A towering. thrilling wine. the 2016 Mouton Rothschild is unbelievably beautiful today. Aromatics. fruit density and vertical structure all come together. In the glass. the 2016 is remarkably vivid and powerful. and yet a gentler. more feminine side emerges with time in the glass. The intense. mineral. savory profile recalls the 1986. but the 2016 has more grace. inner sweetness and sophistication than that wine. Even so. the 2016 is going to need at least a number of years in bottle before it starts drinking well. although it won't be the bruiser the 1986 remains to this day. This is breathtaking wine from Mouton. Tecnical Director Philippe Dhalluin and his team.

The 2016 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon. 15% Merlot. 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. with the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vinified together. It has a very deep purple-black color and slowly slides out of the glass with spicy notes of Sichuan pepper. cloves and cinnamon stick giving way to a core of perfumed black fruits and florals—blackcurrant cordial. candied violets. blackberry compote. rose hips and black plums—plus suggestions of espresso. damp soil. tar and beef drippings. Medium-bodied. the palate is very firmly structured and jam-packed with latent energy about to burst. offering superbly ripe. grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the intense floral and black fruit layers and finishing very long and very minerally. Powerful. profound wine.

Mouton’s congenial managing director. Philippe Dhalluin. was unfortunately in Napa while I was in Bordeaux in October. so I was hosted by Eric Tourbier—Mouton’s technical director—and Clerc-Milon’s winemaker. Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy. While discussing the particularly abundant range of aroma/flavor compounds I was perceiving in the 2016 reds. Danjoy commented. “When you have a wet spring. you tend to have more aromatic precursors. Also. it was a long maturation period. The vine made a lot of aromatic components. The gap between the Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon for ripening was very long. In fact. Cabernet was very late this year. We didn’t know if the Cabernet Sauvignon was going to make it! The big surprise for us was the Cabernet Franc—all of it was delicious. We used it all in the grand vin at Clerc Milon.” When we came to taste Le Petit Mouton and Mouton Rothschild. Eric Tourbier. smiling like the cat that got the cream. said simply. “It was a dry summer. We had very small berries and a good level of ripeness.” He then added. matter-of-factly. “I’ve been at Mouton for 30 years. I think this is my best vintage. The 2016 may be compared to the 1986?” Maybe. but while I’m a huge lover of the incredibly provocative and sometimes formidable 1986 (I had it again just a few weeks ago). I’m thinking this 2016 is going to give a lot more hedonic pleasure in its first 25 years in bottle than the 1986—just coming around now—certainly did.

The 2016 Mouton Rothschild bowled me over when I tasted it from barrel. Philippe Dhalluin compares it to the 1986 in terms of intensity of fruit. although there is more maturity and refinement in the tannins apropos of the 2016. Bottled in July 2018. this has an intense bouquet with pixelated black fruit. crushed stone. hints of blue fruit and a touch of India ink. But it is the delineation and focus that take your breath away. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin framing the pure black currant and cassis fruit. The acidity is pitch-perfect. and there is a gentle but insistent grip toward the extraordinarily long finish. Racking my brains to think of another Mouton Rothschild that I have tasted over the last 20 years that was as good as this. I simply cannot come up with one.

Dark ruby. purple color. Aromas of blackcurrants. black truffle. crushed stone. licorice and hints of tar. Full-bodied. deep and vertical on the palate. drawing you in and down. The structure is very tannic and powerful. yet the tannins are folded into the wine. One of the most powerful Moutons ever for me. Try after 2027.

This is a phenomenal. muscular red that shows incredible power and depth. Full-bodied and with great concentration of tannins but this remains agile and polished. The form to this is stupendous. One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. Wafting from the glass with arresting aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with violets, cigar box and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, concentrated mid-palate framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe acids, and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. This rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates. The blend contains fully 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and attained a modest 13.4% alcohol.

The finish goes on for minutes. Tight and harmonious. You want to drink it! So balanced, yet it will age beautifully. It will be this good forever. 94% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2031.

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild is a mesmerizing wine that shows how compelling the vintage is on the Left Bank. Elegant, creamy and exquisitely layered, the 2019 Lafite conquers all the senses. There is tremendous density and power that belies the 12.8% alcohol, but then again, that can be the magic of Bordeaux. Classic Lafite red plum fruit, spice, cedar, licorice and rose petal linger on the striking, persistent finish.

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild screams Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose of intense black fruit, graphite and subtle minty aromas, supremely well-defined and revealing a hint of star anise with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is beautifully balanced, offering sappy black fruit, black pepper, graphite and just a touch of spice. This has more body, maybe even a touch more sinew than recent vintages, perhaps because of the reconfiguration of the Merlot parcels (see my note en primeur). Very persistent and almost uncharacteristically grippy on the finish, this is a gifted Lafite-Rothschild that will last 50+ years. It will certainly surpass the 2018 with continued bottle age.

The 2020 Château Margaux is a brilliant young wine, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with hints of rose petals, iris, burning embers and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with terrific tension, beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetration finish, this is a vibrant, dynamic Margaux that stands out as the most classically proportioned wine of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 trio.

Gorgeous aromas of dark plums and violets. Orange peel, too. Some crushed stone. Bark. Stems. Iron shavings. Full-bodied, but very tight and compacted. The tannins are all here making it very structured, yet they are polished and melted together. Needs years to show all of its greatness. Incredible polish and structure. More structured than the 2019. Try after 2030 and beyond.

As to the Grand Vin, the 2020 Château Margaux is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, pulled from a tiny 36% of the total production, that spent 20 months in new barrels. It has that classic Château Margaux sense of elegance and complexity and offers full-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe currants, blueberries, acacia flowers, crushed stone, and sandalwood that develop with time in the glass. With remarkable purity as well as flawless balance, it's a seriously concentrated, powerful 2020 that still just glides across the palate with no hard edges, silky tannins, and a great finish. I love everything about this wine. It's going to flirt with perfection in 7-8 years and evolve for 50-75 years. It actually reminds me slightly of the 2016.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2020 Pauillac

The 2020 Mouton Rothschild is a striking wine and one that I regretted not purchasing en primeur as soon as it landed in my glass. Offering up complex aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings, loamy soil, cigar wrapper, espresso roast and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with terrific concentrated, beautifully refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Checking in at 12.8% alcohol, its incipient complexity, ineffable sense of completeness and exquisite balance mark it out as the purists' choice among the trio of 2018, 2019 and 2020. In this vintage, the lots that made it into the blend were largely confined to the core gravel terroirs that represent Mouton's heart, meaning that there's a little less to go around. This was the first vintage overseen by Mouton's new technical director, Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, and he has begun with a flying start.

The 2020 Château Mouton Rothschild is in the running for the biggest, baddest, and most concentrated wine in the vintage. Based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petite Verdot brought up in new barrels, this inky hued beast of wine offers up classic Mouton ripe black fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and freshly sharpened pencil-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, tannic, backward 2020 with terrific purity, building, mouth-coating tannins, terrific balance, and one gorgeous finish. Unfortunately, as with many of the top 2020s, this isn't for those looking for instant gratification, and a decade (or more) of cellaring is advised. This hit 13.1% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.78. It will be a 50-, 60-, 70+-year wine.

The 2016 Pavie is simply magnificent. Gracious. perfumed and exquisitely beautiful. the 2016 has it all. I can't remember seeing a Pavie with this much translucent energy and nuance. Black cherry. plum. lavender. spice and menthol all infuse this explosive. young wine with tremendous character. In the glass. the 2016 is vivid. aromatically deep and full of saline-infused energy. It is without question one of the wines of the vintage. As it turns out Gerard Perse also opened the 2008. Although the two vintages (2016 and 2008) in question are quite different in style and quality. the trajectory Pavie has taken in recent years is evident. The 2016 is a thrilling wine. That's all there is to it. The blend is 60% Merlot. 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted two times.

Full-bodied and built like a brick house. it has a solid foundation of firm. super ripe. grainy tannins and seamless freshness interknit with the black fruit preserves and minerally layers. finishing very long and very decadent. Extrem duftend und floral mit Lavendel, Flieder und Veilchen, die die süßen, reifen Beeren wie Brombeeren und schwarze Johannisbeeren untermalen. Auch ein Hauch von Schiefer und Graphit ist wahrnehmbar. Der Wein ist vollmundig, aber dennoch unglaublich ausgewogen und raffiniert, mit extrem feinen Tanninen, die Minuten lang anhalten. Frische Kräuter wie Lorbeerblatt und Zitronengras heben die dunklen Fruchtnoten hervor. Die Qualität der Tannine ist exquisit, mit wunderbarer Eleganz und Raffinesse. Ein Wein, der Minuten lang anhält. Jetzt schon wunderbar zu genießen, aber ab 2026 noch besser.

Antonio Galloni im Februar 2021: Der 2018er Opus One ist unglaublich elegant und poliert, direkt aus der Flasche. Seidige Tannine und duftende, angehobene Aromen tragen zu einem Eindruck von Finesse bei, der den 2018er in ziemlich deutlicher Weise von einigen der vorhergehenden Jahrgänge abhebt. Es wird interessant sein zu sehen, ob der 2018er mit etwas Zeit in der Flasche an Körper gewinnt. Es ist ziemlich selten, dass der Opus One in diesem Stadium so zugänglich ist.

Würziges Bouquet, tintige Anflüge und deutlich florale Noten, nicht so reserviert wie der Les Forts de Latour, aber auch nicht unbedingt kommunikativ. Im Gaumen zeigt er dann fraglos Grösse, schwarzer Pfeffer, Pumpernickelbrot, Heidelbeeren und Cassis, die Adstringenz ist verlangend, er zeigt aber auch eine schier feminine Noblesse, nachhaltig, mit mittlerem Druck. Wenn man Latour auf dem Etikett liest und den Jahrgang 2015 vor sich hat, dann erfüllt er vielleicht (momentan) nicht ganz die Erwartungen. Man hat hier aber auch das positive Gefühl, dass er in seiner Evolution noch rückständig ist und sicherlich noch zulegen kann/könnte. 19/20 2026 – 2060

Masseto 2019 Toscana IGT

Der Masseto ist der berühmteste, reinsortige Merlot Italiens. Der 2019er wurde über 24 Monate in 100 % neuen Barriques ausgebaut. Dunkle, lebendige Farbe. Duftig, fein und frisch, wirkt der Masseto 2019 trotz 15 vol.-%. nicht breit oder deftig, alles ist auf Finesse und Frische ausgerichtet, mit feinen kirschigen Nuancen und tiefgründiger, ätherischer Kopfnote. Satt und cremig im Auftakt, präsentiert er sich extrem differenziert und feinsinnig auf der Zunge, mit groß angelegter Struktur und ungemein feinkörnigen Gerbstoffen. Weit gefasst und tiefgründig am Gaumen besitzt er zwar nicht die ganz große Terroir-Charakteristik à la Pétrus oder Trotanoy und dennoch ist eine Größe im Masseto zu erkennen, die ihn zu einem außergewöhnlichen Wein macht. Sehr ausgewogen und lang, schmelzig und finessenreich. Ein sehr eleganter Masseto.

This bottle opens a new chapter for one of Italy's most celebrated and collected wines. The first vintage made entirely in its dedicated state-of-the-art winery (and the first vintage with a 10% dabble of Cabernet Franc added to what has historically aways been a pure expression of Merlot), the Masseto 2019 Masseto has two main themes at heart: concentration and elegance. And managing those two seemingly contrasting elements requires a little bit of magic. That's the Masseto magic we look for. The 2019 vintage delivers it in spades with lovely concentrated fruit, blackberry, integrated spice, tobacco, crushed slate, pencil shaving and lots of texture and fiber to push a lasting mouthfeel. The wine's richness translates into density and power to the palate, meanwhile the bouquet reveals fluidity and new sides as the wine opens in the glass. The finish is tapered and focused.
