Ulysses - Das neue Projekt von dem Macher des Dominus Estate.

Christian Moueix hat Ulysses 2008 erworben und führt es nun stetig weiter an die Spitze des Napa Valley. Man kann den Ulysses als Bruder des Dominus sehen. Eine Cabernet Sauvignon dominierte Blend mit kleinen Anteilen von Cabernet Franc und Petit Verdot.

2019 ist leider noch nicht bewertet worden.

James Suckling beschreibt den Ulysses 2018 im Mai 2021 wie folgt:

Aromas of terra cotta, chocolate and hazelnut with iron and ink. Dusty. Full-bodied and round. Layered. Flamboyant and juicy. Rather soft and gorgeous. Some walnut and chocolate at the end. Persistent. Always there. Drinkable now, but will age wonderfully.

The current-release 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon shows more cherries and bay leaf on the nose than prior vintages. There's still a solid framework of cedar, loam and cassis, hints of mocha and licorice, but there's also a bit more freshness and lift. It's medium to full-bodied and densely concentrated yet silky and finessed, with a long, elegant finish.

Just about pure perfection and the finest wine I've tasted from this address, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all from a site just north of Dominus. This deep, inky hued beauty offers up a beautiful, full-bodied, richly textured, and incredibly concentrated style that carries ample black and blue fruit as well as notes of crushed stone, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil. It has the focused, structured style of the 2018 vintage and is going to benefit from 4-6 years (if not a decade) of bottle age and will be a 30+ year wine.

The 2013 Ulysses is absolutely mind-boggling, as so many wines from this vintage are. Gorgeous blueberry and blackberry fruit, along with the telltale cassis and floral notes, jump from the glass. Again, this is Pauillac-like, with some cedar wood and subtle barrique smells. Again produced nearly all from Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is full-bodied, powerful. rich and long, with slightly sweeter tannins than the 2012. Production in 2013 was 960 cases and Moueix told me that the entire growing season averaged about two and half weeks ahead of schedule from bloom break to harvest. This is a prodigious effort and will certainly stand as the great Ulysses of the first trio to be released. I suspect it will be drinkable in 3-4 years and keep for 30 or more given the Moueix track record.

The evolution of this wine has been phenomenal since I tasted it in barrel a year ago with the same black cherry, plum and citrus character but it's turn to orange leaf, dark Chinese tea, and mushroom. Full body, fine and velvety tannins with a touch of dust to the texture. So much chocolate and fruit undertones with forest floor and hints of tobacco. The mouth feel and complexity are seductive. Better to drink in 2022 but a joy to taste. Spring 2018 release.

The 2015 Ulysses brings together the richness of the year with a good bit of underlying support. Dark and powerful in the glass, but with silky tannins and striking purity of fruit, the 2015 is a wonderfully complete wine. The interplay of aromatics, fruit and structure places Ulysses among the finest wines of the vintage.

Der Wein ist mittel- bis vollmundig, gleichzeitig fest und seidig, mit einem reifen, anhaltenden Abgang. Robert Parker bewertete diesen Wein bei seiner Veröffentlichung mit 94+ Punkten und bezeichnete ihn als einen der zugänglichsten Cabernets von Togni. Ich habe Jahrgänge von Philip Togni bis in die Mitte der 1980er Jahre und sie sind wahrhaft langlebige Klassiker des Napa Valley. Einer der besten Napa Cabernets, die ich je verkostet habe, war der 1969 Chappellet, den Togni bei Chappellet gemacht hat. Seine Weine bestehen die Zeitprobe, sind aber in ihrer Jugend manchmal etwas unzugänglich.

Medium to full-bodied, elegantly styled and stunningly energetic, it has a fine-grained texture and long, fragrant finish.

James Suckling beschreibt den Quintessa 2018 am 2. August 2021:

This is beautifully polished with firm, dusty tannins to the blue fruit, as well as chocolate and cedar character. Some much earthier character, too, from mushrooms to bark. Forest flowers. Perfumed. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a soft, creamy finish. Some iron and iodine to this. So attractive at the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Better after 2023.

Anmerkungen zum Jahrgang:
Nach fünf warmen Jahren war die Vegetationsperiode 2018 gleichmäßig und ausgeglichen, wobei der Austrieb zwei Wochen später als im Vorjahr begann. Das gemäßigte Wetter gab den Takt vor, um ein gesundes Blätterdach und einen Weinberg zu schaffen, der mit milden Bedingungen, einem Mangel an Extremen und einer Fülle an hochwertigen Früchten gesegnet war. Die Harmonie der Saison 2018 ermöglichte ein tieferes Verständnis dafür, wie die biodynamischen Anbaumethoden weiterentwickeln können, um die Reben auf den vielfältigen Böden von Quintessa zu unterstützen. Die milden Witterungsbedingungen hielten während der gesamten Ernte an und brachten Trauben von perfekter Reife und Säure hervor, die Zeit für die Entwicklung von Phenolen und Aromen hatten, ohne dass der Druck eines steigenden Brix-Wertes bestand. Es folgte eine lange und fast gemächliche Ernte, mit Zeit für präzise Entscheidungen, die sich in der Reinheit und Raffinesse des Quintessa 2018 zeigen.

Der Quintessa 2018 ist ein Wein von perfekter Harmonie, mit tiefen Aromen und eleganten Schichten, die schon in jungen Jahren erkennbar sind. Medium-to full-bodied with super-fine tannins that are long and persistent, with graceful progression and length on the palate. So long, with real definition. September 2022 release. From biodynamically grown grapes. Hard not to drink now, but will age wonderfully.

The 2019 Proprietary Red Wine is more open and effusive than the 2018 version, with gentle floral nuances set against a backdrop of black cherries and cassis, joined by subtle notes of tobacco, cedar and vanilla. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, streamlined, silky and lush, nicely balanced and elegant, with a long, softly dusty finish tinged with licorice and caramel. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

I was blown away by the 2019 Red Blend from Quintessa, which is up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère, this full-bodied beauty has a perfectly balanced, seamless, yet expansive and classic 2019 style as well as gorgeous aromatics of cassis, flowers, chalky minerality, and integrated oak. It’s hard to resist already, but I have no doubt this will evolve for 20 years if stored properly.

One of the wines of the vintage, as well as a legendary Napa Cabernet that will compete with anything out there, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals a deep purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of pure crème de cassis and blackberry-scented fruits intermixed with lots tobacco leaf, lead pencil, spice, and hints of flowers. Reminding me of the 2016 with its purity as well as its balance, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless texture, and a blockbuster of a finish. Based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, this is a wine you don’t want to miss! It’s going to take 7-8 years to hit its early drinking plateau and cruise for 30-40 years in cold cellars.

Clearly a stupendous effort but just far too young at this stage, Spottswoode's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a concentrated, velvety core of black cherries, cassis and dusty loam, then supports it with hints of cedar and toasted oak. It's full-bodied, rich and youthfully intense, with a long, compelling finish that just won't quit. Give it a few more years, and it may indeed reach the perfection my predecessor predicted for it.

Im Glas steht der Promontory 2018 mit einem dunklen Kirschrot sowie funkelnden Rubinreflexen, er besitzt auch noch immer einen violetten Schimmer der durchblitzt. Die erste Nase zeigt sich noch etwas wild, Kräuter, kühle Minze und Eukalyptus vermischen sich. Eine dunkle Würze vom Holz spielt sich behutsam ein, Splitter von der Bitterschokolade die auch an zart geröstete Kaffeebohnen erinnern. Sein erster Antrunk ist wenig überraschend kraftvoll und einnehmend. Was sehr angenehm auffällt ist auch hier, dass der Wein nie zu weit geht. Er stoppt quasi ab um die aromatische Richtung zu wechseln und im gleichen Schluck noch ein kleines Feuerwerk an Frucht loszulassen. Alles perfekt untermalt von den feinsten Gerbstoffen die man sich nur vorstellen kann. Eine Balance im Mund die einen fast sprachlos macht. Seine frische Säurestruktur und die Kühle verlassen ihn niemals, sie halten die Struktur und das Wwilde in dem Wein auf Linie, sie begleiten ihn vielmehr in jede Facette die er zeigen möchte. Wenn man dem Wein einige Zeit im Glas gibt und man kehrt dann zurück um sich wieder etwas Neues zu erschmecken, wird man stets belohnt. Seine Balance und totale Harmonie sind das Herzstück, er wirkt nun fast etwas besänftigt und in sich ruhend. Man möchte fast glauben, dass er auch zeigen möchte, dass er auch die ruhigen und leisen Nuancen voll ausspielen kann. Nimmt man in dieser Annahme wieder einen etwas volleren Schluck, so dreht er schon wieder im Handumdrehen den Spiess um und schiebt weitere Aromenfächer über den Gaumen. Sein Ausklang ist sehr sehr lang und dabei völlig in sich ruhend, ein spektakuläres Umamierlebnis. 98+ Punkte

From a slightly more challenging year for this estate due to the heavy springtime rains, the 2019 Dominus is a classic blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc from this team brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. It offers a more ruby/plum and borderline opaque hue as well as a great nose of ripe currants, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and a touch of loamy earth. This round, supple, medium to full-bodied effort has soft tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. It's not going to match the all-time greats here, but it’s a charming, endearing Cabernet that will offer incredible pleasure with just 3-5 years of bottle age and drink well for 20+ years or more.

Diese ausgezeichenete Qualität nutzten die Ehrenhausener und legen die nunmehr vierte Ausgabe der Tement Ried Zieregg Parzellenkollektion Sauvignon Blanc vor. Und wieder gelingt damit der ganz große Wurf.

Ried Zieregg ist eine von Kalkmergel und Korallenkalkböden geprägte, unglaublich facettenreiche Weinbergslage. Für die Tement Ried Zieregg Parzellenkollektion 2019 Sauvignon Blanc wurden die Parzellen Karmeliten Berg Brunnenhaus, Weisse Wand Rückenstück sowie Steilriegel (oberer) ausgewählt.

"Die Parzelle Karmeliten Berg Brunnenhaus befindet sich im Herzen der Ried Zieregg. Der Weingarten ist nach Süden ausgerichtet und liegt auf 400 - 470 m Seehöhe in besonders steiler und karger Hanglage. Die Rebstöcke wurzeln auf massiven Korallenkalk- und Kalkmergelböden.
Die parzelle Weisse Wand Rückenstück ist der steilste Teil der Sauvignon Blanc Parzelle Weiße Wand und ist geprägt von blauen Kalkmergelböden. Die kargen Böden lassen einen charaktervollen, festen und unheimlich eigenständigen Wein entstehen.
Die Parzelle Steilriegel (oberer) zählt zu den ältesten Parzellen am Zieregg und wurde zu 90 % mit Morillon und zu 10 % mit Sauvignon Blanc bepflanzt. Die Sauvignon Blanc Reben wurzeln auf blauen und braunen Kalkmergelböden. Das vielschichtige Terroir in Kombination mit dem einzigartigen Mikroklima verleihen diesem Wein Frische, Typizität und Finesse" Soweit die Darstellung des Weingutes.

Wine & Soul Pintas 2021 Douro Tinto

Dieser komplexe, raffinierte und harmonische Rotwein ist vielschichtig mit Aromen von schwarzen Kirschen, schwarzen Johannisbeeren und Gewürzen mit ausdrucksvoller Mineralität. Am Gaumen ist er kraftvoll, lebhaft und konzentriert mit mit feinen Tanninen, erstaunlicher Frucht und tollem Abgang. Die unglaublich beeindruckende Qualität der Pintas-Weine hat viele Gründe. Einer ist, dass die bis zu 89 Jahre alten Rebstöcke sich aus mehr als 40 verschiedenen autochthonen Rebsorten zusammensetzen, die typisch für das Douro-Tal sind. Nach der selektiven Handlese wurden die Trauben ganz traditionell und schonend über mehrere Tage hinweg von Menschen getreten. So können nur die besten Tannine in den späteren Wein gelangen. Die nach der Gärung erfolgenden Reifung und malolaktische Gärung wurde in französischen Eichenfässern für ca. 20 Monaten durchgeführt.

The 2019 Pintas is a field blend (over 40 grapes, but the dominant grapes are Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional) from old vines (around 90 years) aged for 20 months in 20% new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. What can you say about Pintas in all its glory? Big and expressive fruit is the first thing you'll take note of. Yet the second thing changes the opinion on and character of this wine. It's not even close to a fruit bomb. Its structure controls it, making it fresh, precise and lively, never jammy and ponderous. Then, it shows off some serious power. The winery's style generally eschews astringency (except at times on the Port), but there's certainly a fair bit of power on that finish. This is built to age and develop. It's delicious but not one-dimensional. It isn't even close to showing everything it has just now. While not completely unapproachable, it will show a lot better in a few years. It may not hit peak for 10. There were 5,900 bottles produced, plus some other size formats.

Erst seit 2001 werden Weine wie der Pintas erzeugt. aber schon heute zählen diese Weine zu den absoluten Kultweinen Portugals. Die Produktion dieser Spitzengewächse ist jedes Jahr sehr limitiert.
