My only real critique is that Faugeres and the pure Peby Faugeres are more closer in style than they usually are. which is remarkable as the blends are totally different! Tasted three times.

From holdings just across the border from Pomerol characterized by predominantly sandy-clay soils, the 2019 Grand Corbin-Despagne offers up aromas of plums, sweet berries and cherries mingled with raw cocoa, cigar wrapper, licorice, violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent, with fine concentration, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, it's a beautifully balanced classic that will age with grace. François Despagne is the seventh generation of his family to steward this 28-hectare Saint-Émilion estate, located just across the border from Pomerol, and he is intent on bringing it back to the heights of which anyone who has tasted vintages such as 1929 or 1961 know it is capable.

Returning to the estate after some years researching wine microbiology, he dug 150 soil pits—discovering that the historic delimitation of parcels on the estate corresponded precisely to the underlying geology. Soils are thin sand over blue clay, and replanting favors Cabernet Franc (with an in-house massale selection)—which represented about 60% of the surface area before the 1956 frosts and subsequent replanting. Despagne has converted to organic and biodynamic farming, reducing yields, and that is translating to new levels of depth and concentration. In the winery and cellar, however, the approach is rather classical, with a tendency to work more reductively and preserve better purity of fruit (Thomas Duclos consults), emphasizing seamlessness and depth over extraction and impact. This is an estate to watch.

Château Peymouton ist Teil des Anwesens von Château Laroque, einem historischen Grand Cru Classé von Saint-Émilion, das nur 3,5 km östlich des mittelalterlichen Dorfes liegt.

Château Laroque, eines der größten Anwesen der Appellation, stammt aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Dank seiner strategischen Lage auf einem Kalksteinplateau mit Blick auf das Tal des Flusses Dordogne fungierte es als wichtige Verteidigungsfestung für das nahe gelegene Dorf. Der Weinberg selbst wurde im 18. Jahrhundert gepflanzt. Die Familie Beaumartin erwarb das Anwesen 1935 und begann in den 1960er Jahren mit der Modernisierung des Weinbergs und der Weinbereitung.

1996 wurde Château Laroque für 27 Hektar seines Weinbergs der Grand Cru Classé-Status verliehen, während die restlichen 31 Hektar einen neuen Wein hervorbrachten: Château Peymouton, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

Château Peymouton liegt auf einem Hochplateau des Anwesens (80-100 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel), das teilweise aus einer dünnen Schicht reichen Tons über Kalkstein und teilweise aus tiefem, dickem rotem Ton besteht. Diese Böden verleihen dem Wein Dichte und Struktur, der jedoch die Eleganz des Kalksteins bewahrt.

Château Peymouton wird von demselben Team geführt und genießt die gleiche Sorgfalt und Aufmerksamkeit wie Château Laroque. Die Weinlese erfolgt nach der individuellen Reife der einzelnen Parzellen und der Wein wird schonend vinifiziert, wobei besondere Sorgfalt auf den Ausdruck frischer Frucht gelegt wird.

Die Weine von Château Peymouton bringen die Eleganz dieses historischen Terroirs in einem lebendigen, fruchtbetonten Stil zum Ausdruck, der bereits nach wenigen Jahren Lagerung genossen werden kann.

It has 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.67, but somehow the wine does not come through as overripe; they eliminate all the raisins with their new optical sorting machine and that makes very clean wines and has increased the precision. They also reduced the toast of their barrels and that increases the integration of the oak with the fruit. Varietal, juicy, soft and very drinkable.

The 2021 Laya was produced with 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell, looking for a fruit-driven and easy to drink red with 14.5% alcohol, ripe fruit and a soft texture. 2021 was warmer than the average but with some cold spells, especially the one in January called Filomena that brought lots of snow, despite which, it was also a dry year and they got up to 40% less grapes. This fermented in stainless steel vats with neutral yeasts, with malolactic in barrel, where the wine matured for four months. This shows some toasty oak, but it might be because it's too young and very recently bottled. But vintages seem to take oak differently; they believe this will show as integrated as the 2020. Time will tell. In any case, it's a wine for the short term, and it's very good for what it is. 360,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022.

Die Weingärten beschlagen 40 ha und liegen auf den besten Parzellen dieses Gebiets. Die optimale Lage in Bezug auf die Sonne, die ideale Zusammenstellung des Bodens, genügend Niederschlag und die relativ niedrigen Nachttemperaturen sorgen für eine besonders gute und gleichmäßige Reifung der Trauben, welche darum hervorragend für die Herstellung qualitativ hochwertiger Weine geeignet sind. Der Federici Le Ripe Lazio Rosso 2017 ist  eine Cuvée aus Syrah, Cabenet Sauvignon und Merlot, zeigt schon von Aussen, wieviel Saft hier im Spiel ist - die Etikettierung spricht für sich. Wie bei Federici so üblich, Im Glas von dunklem Rubonrot mit violetten Reflexen, üppig, auch in der Nase. Viel dunkle Beere, etwas Zimt und Vanille vom sechsmonatigen Holzausbau. Der Federici Le Ripe Lazio Rosso 2017 ist dicht am Gaumen. Hier eine schöne konzentriete Frucht, aber nicht ohne Finesse. Feine Mineralik, ein Hauch animierendes Gerbstoff stützen die Opulenz und machen ihn trinkig. Wir finden, dass diese Trinkigkeit viel zu vielen Weinen abgeht und diese gern schon nach einem Glas "satt" machen.
