A really classy, beautiful red with seduction and force at the finish. Aromas and flavors of currants, wet earth and truffles, as well as mushrooms. Full bodied, tight and tannic. Toned and steely. A new, traditional style. 49% cabernet franc, 48% merlot and 3% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2019 Trotte Vieille has a ripe black cherry, raspberry preserve and iodine-scented bouquet that becomes floral with continued aeration. This is an exuberant nose that displays impressive purity. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with black pepper and a pinch of sea salt, very cohesive and demonstrating fine grip on the finish. This is a classy offering from a much improved Saint-Émilion, especially in terms of the detail on the finish. Excellent. Tasted from bottle and half-bottle.

The 2019 Côte de Baleau is more opulent on the nose than some of its peers: exuberant, plush redcurrant and Morello cherries, though with aeration it adds more blackberry and subtle marine aromas, a bit of moorland peat even. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but sturdy tannins. This feels cohesive, almost clinical, especially towards the impressively precise and mineral-driven finish. I cannot recall a Côte de Baleau with this degree of terroir expression. Bon vin!

The 2019 Côte de Baleau is a very petty, gracious wine. Lifted aromatics play nicely off of the wine's mid-weight structure. There is plenty to like in this distinctive, accessible Saint-Émilion. As always, Côte de Baleau is a wine of understatement; the 2019 is especially classy.

92-94 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Saintayme 2019 Saint Emilion Grand Cru Antonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Saintayme 2019 Saint Emilion Grand Cru im Juni 2020:

The 2019 Saintayme offers up a veritable explosion of sweet red cherry, kirsch and floral notes. Deep and lush, with tremendous freshness, Saintayme is terrific in 2019. In fact, this is one of the better recent vintages I can remember tasting. The purity of fruit and overall energy are both remarkable, while the harder edges and slightly savory qualities that can be present are barely perceptible. The 2019 is 100% Merlot picked between October 1 and 4. Denis Durantou's 2019s are absolutely brilliant across the board. My tasting was obviously bittersweet, as Durantou lost his battle with illness just a few weeks prior.

Denis Durantou was one of the most intriguing characters in Bordeaux. I can't say I knew him well, but I always enjoyed tasting with him, as he was a person that spoke more with his eyes than with words. Things were implied rather than overtly stated. So, I tasted the 2019s with daughters Constance and Noémie over Zoom, in typical 2020 fashion. The Durantou sisters describe 2019 as a year with an early flowering and homogenous ripening that led to small, concentrated berries and higher pHs than normal. Temperatures were kept cool in the cellar, where both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations took place over cuvaison of 21 days (for all wines), in a reductive enviroment with little oxygen. From top to bottom, the Durantou 2019s are positively stellar. Don't miss them!

90-92 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Saintayme 2019 Saint Emilion Grand Cru Neal Martin bewertet den Chateau Saintayme 2019 Saint Emilion Grand Cru im Juni 2020:

The 2019 Saintayme, Denis Durantou's Saint-Émilion pure Merlot vineyard, was picked between 1 and 4 October and matures in 30% new oak. It is the most outgoing of the late winemaker's sextet of wines, kirsch and crushed strawberry scents bursting from the glass with a touch of cola. The palate is fleshy and ripe with impressive weight. Good density develops towards the back end with a saline tang on the aftertaste. Give it two or three years in bottle.

The 2019 Poesia is a real beauty. Pliant and seductive in the glass, with striking depth, Poesia is absolutely gorgeous in 2019. Plush fruit and soft curves give the 2019 so much pure appeal. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and licorice all meld together in sumptuous Saint-Émilion that will drink well right out of the gate. Sweet floral notes resonate on the effortless finish. Tasted next to Barde-Haut, Poesia offers a touch more freshness. Hélène Garcin-Lévêque and Patrice Lévêque turned out a gorgeous set of 2019s. The wines are deep, ample and so expressive. Readers who want to understand the diversity of Saint-Émilion will find that in Barde-Haut and Poesia, two wines that really capture the personality of the vintage in these two districts.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Poesia is a little closed to begin, soon opening out to reveal wonderfully pure notes of crushed red and black plums, fresh blackberries and warm cherries with nuances of allspice, aniseed, potpourri and forest floor. Medium-bodied, the palate is tightly wound, featuring loads of mineral sparks and a wicked backbone of freshness, with very fine-grained tannins to support, finishing long and vibrant.

Extremely focused with impressive mineral tension on the effortless finish. Highly recommended.

Sweet red cherry, mocha, espresso, dried flowers and leather are some of the many aromas and flavors that give this silky Saint Émilion so much appeal. Tasted two times.

The 2019 Haut Brisson was picked 27 September until 5 October at 41hl/ha and fermented in stainless steel with sulphur addition. It has a lovely, very pure bouquet, an equal measure of red and black fruit laced with a judicious amount of new oak. Just a dab of Thai fish oil in the background. The palate is actually a different kettle of fish: much edgier than the bouquet intimates with striking acidity and tension, a little gritty in texture and charcoal-like towards the finish. This is a fascinating Saint-Émilion, maybe a tad different to the Haut Brisson that I am accustomed to. I am fascinated to see which way it goes after bottling.

The 2019 Tour Saint Christophe was picked from 27 September until 15 October at 37hl/ha. Matured in 40% new oak, this has an incredibly concentrated bouquet that needs to shrug off a little reduction when I taste it. Layers of blackberry and blueberry, wilted violets and orange rind burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe grippy tannins that frame the layers of dense black fruit tinged with allspice and graphite. It is a Saint-Émilion clearly built for the long-term, powerful and uncompromising, perhaps one that will be in need of cellaring for several years before it becomes approachable.

The 2019 Tour Saint Christophe is a broad, powerful wine that captures all of the intensity typical of this sector of Saint-Émilion. Black cherry, espresso, chocolate, licorice, graphite and dark spice give the 2019 a decidedly somber, brooding feel. There is plenty to look forward to here - that much is clear.

In 2012, Hong Kong-based Peter Kwok purchased this vineyard located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. The average age of vines is 30 years old. The wine is aging in 40% new oak barrels, 40% one-year-old barrels and 20% two-year-old barrels. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with fruit from the Cassevert lieu-dit, and the wine has 14.3% alcohol at a pH of 3.6. Deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Tour Saint-Christophe leaps from the glass with gregarious notes of fresh red and black cherries, mulberries and wild blueberries plus suggestions of eucalyptus, chocolate pie, cinnamon stick and clove oil with a waft of cedar chest. The full-bodied palate has seriously impressive freshness, featuring a firm, finely grained frame and loads of energetic black fruit layers, finishing long and spicy.

There is a sense of terroir and mineralité in situ. The palate is saline on the entry, immediately grabbing your attention thanks to unbridled freshness and vivacity. Slightly grainy in texture, the umami sensation that glides towards a very precise and natural finish is wonderful here. Grand Mayne has been on an upward swing in recent vintages and this is another outstanding wine from Jean-Antoine Nony.

The 2019 Barde-Haut has a not dissimilar bouquet to the excellent Poesia, vivacious and intense with black cherries, blueberry, vanilla pod and raspberry that likewise burst from the glass. Lovely purity here. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins, a fine line of acidity, full of tension and poise with a detailed, cedar and graphite tinged finish. This is a superb Barde-Haute that will give 20+ years of drinking pleasure.

The 2019 Barde-Haut is an opulent, full-throttle Saint-Émilion. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, cloves and menthol power through in a heady, exotic Saint-Émilion that very much reflects the opulent style of the year. Today, the tannins are equally imposing, which suggests the 2019 is going to need a number of years in bottle to come around. Readers should expected a potent, flamboyantly ripe style.

The 2019 Clos de l'Oratoire was picked from 23 September to 7 October at 51hl/ha and matured in 50% new oak. For the vintage, it has a slightly broodier nose than its peers, but still attractive with blackberry, briary, undergrowth and a trace of peppermint. The palate displays more vivacity with fine-grain tannins and an almost Left Bank pencil lead note emanating from the 19% Cabernet Franc. Quite linear but persistent on the finish, this is a very well-crafted, elegant, intellectual Clos d'Oratoire from Stephan von Neipperg's team.

Full-bodied, rich, ripe and oh-so-decadent in the mouth, the palate is jam-packed with black fruit preserves, framed by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long with layers of opulent exotic spices.

This fruit saw five days of cold soak followed by 30 days on the skins and malolactic fermentation in barrel, all choices that exalt textural depth. Bellevue is a pretty little vineyard poised just above Château Angelus in Saint-Émilion. The soils here are clay/limestone, and it is planted to 100% Merlot. Deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Bellevue rolls sensuously out of the glass with enticing notes of preserved plums, blueberry compote and Black Forest cake plus hints of powdered cinnamon, clove oil, candied violets and star anise. Full-bodied, concentrated and totally seductive in the mouth, the decadent black and blue fruits are well-supported by firm yet velvety tannins and tons of freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully opulent.

93-95 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Bellevue 2019 Saint Emilion Antonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Bellevue 2019 Saint Emilion im Juni 2020:

The 2019 Bellevue Mondotte is a powerful, tightly wound Saint-Émilion. Dark red cherry, dried flowers, licorice and mint all meld together in the glass. Next to the other wines in the Perse range, Bellevue Mondotte comes across as less showy, with tons of persistence that makes up for its reticence. Red fruit, pomegranate and blood orange infuse the finish with superb density. I can't help thinking that I caught the 2019 at a slightly awkward stage.Henrique Da Costa, Gérard Perse's son-in-law, explained that while 2019 was hot and dry, conditions were not extremely hot. Cool temperatures in the evenings provided respite from the daytime heat, while water reserves in the soils from the wet spring allowed the vines to avoid stress. As for the wines, they are superb across the board. Most of the attention will naturally center on Pavie, but the entire range is terrific.

The 2019 La Serre, the Saint-Émilion property owned by the d'Arfeuille family and run by J-P Moueix, has been a little gem in their line-up in recent years. The Merlot was picked 23 to 25 September, the Cabernet Franc on 5 October before élevage in 50% new oak. This has a nicely defined, vivacious and expressive nose with black cherries, iodine and hints of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a return of that black pepper note right on the finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière is a nervous, tightly wound wine. Then again, we are talking about a Cabernet Franc-driven Saint-Émilion. Sweet red berries, mint, blood orange and spice pulse with tremendous energy. Aromatically expressive and deep, Canon La Gaffelière builds effortlessly over time, leading to a bright, saline and mineral-drenched finish that is a thing of beauty. The 2019 shows much better from a full bottle (as opposed to a half), with silky tannins that emerge with a touch of aeration. I won't be surprised if the 2019 is even better from bottle than this note suggests.
