The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Cote de Baleau offers up notions of raisin cake, prunes and Chinese five spice with touches of tobacco and fallen leaves. Rich, full-bodied and very spicy in the dried berry-laced mouth, it has a chewy texture and lively lift on the finish.

The 2018 Cote de Baleau is a very pretty, understated wine built on precision and nuance. Produced by Denis Durantou of Château L’Eglise Clinet, the 2018 Saintayme is made of 100% Merlot with 30% new oak and 14.5% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts from the glass with plum preserves, crushed blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of lavender, unsmoked cigar and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals beautiful freshness and elegance with soft tannins and loads of mineral sparks on the finish.

Denis Durantou's 2018 Saintayme is especially fine in 2018. Bright, floral and energetic, Saintayme really shines. In fact, I can't remember a recent vintage with this much finesse. The tannins need time to soften, but there is plenty of radiant fruit waiting to emerge. I won't be surprised if the finished wine is even better than this note suggests. Tasted two times.

The 2018 Puy-Blanquet is a rich, creamy and sensual wine with tremendous near and medium term appeal. In 2018, Puy-Blanquet is especially lush, almost shockingly so, for a Saint-emilion that is usually quite classic in feel. Inky red and purplish berry fruit, spice, rose petal and mint build as this silky, pliant Saint-emilion shows off its racy, inviting personality. Don't miss it.

The 2018 Vieux Châteaux Palon is a rich, super-concentrated wine. Blackberry jam, chocolate, sweet spice, leather and menthol all inform this sumptuous, racy Saint-emilion. This is an especially unctuous style, with all the elements very nicely balanced. Best of all, the 2018 should drink well with minimal cellaring.

The 2018 Fombrauge is a knockout. Ripe, explosive and full of character, the 2018 is the sort of bottle that is opened and enjoyed in short order.

The 2018 de Pressac is laced with inky red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, leather, menthol and sweet floral notes. In multiple tastings, Pressac has been quite closed and reticent. Even so, there is terrific depth and textural resonance that carries through to the layered finish. At this stage, Pressac appears to be less exuberant than it typical is at this stage. 91-94

The 2018 Saint-Georges (Côte Pavie) is a deep, brooding wine with a compelling interplay of dense fruit and supporting structure. Blueberry jam, savory herbs, lavender, mint, spice and gravel jump from the glass in this potent, virile Saint-Émilion. Saint-Georges has really come along in the last few years. The 2018 is terrific and also quite promising. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

92-94+ Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau Tour Saint Christophe 2018 Saint EmilionLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Tour Saint Christophe 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

In 2012, Hong Kong-based Peter Kwok purchased this vineyard located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. The average age of vines is 30 years old. The wine is aging in 40% new oak barrels, 40% one-year-old and 20% two-year-old barrels and is expected to run 18 months. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with fruit from the Cassevert lieu-dit, and the wine has 14.6% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, the 2018 Tour Saint-Christophe bursts out of the glass with wonderfully pure blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry scents with an undercurrent of plum preserves, star anise and cinnamon stick with wafts of charcuterie and dried herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with vibrant, juicy black fruits with a ripe, rounded tannin texture and fantastic freshness, finishing savory.

91-94 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Tour Saint Christophe 2018 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Tour Saint Christophe 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 Tour Saint Christophe is a wine of real depth and intensity. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice, spice and leather build through to the creamy, resonant finish. There is plenty of the density and volume readers have come to expect, but also less extraction than in the past, and that is a good thing. Consulting winemaker Michel Rolland really seems to have dialed it in here. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times.

Intense aromas and flavors of blue fruit and violets. Hints of green tea and black olives. Changes all the time. Medium-to full-bodied with polished and very silky tannins. Love the center palate. The finish lasts for minutes. This year, about one-third cabernet franc gives an edge to the merlot and the touch of cabernet sauvignon.

91-93 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau Bellefont-Belcier 2018 Saint EmilionLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Bellefont-Belcier 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Bellefont Belcier delivers profound notions of warm plums, baked cherries and mulberries with hints of spice cake and underbrush. Full-bodied, rich and decadent, it has a rock-solid backbone of rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. Aging is in progress for an anticipated 20 months in 40% new, 40% one year-old and 20% two year-old barrels. The blend is 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

90-93 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Bellefont-Belcier 2018 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Bellefont-Belcier 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 Bellefont-Belcier is dark, powerful and quite brooding, but also noticeably less extracted than in the past. Succulent dark cherry, plum, violet, lavender, graphite and spice all infuse this savory, virile Saint-emilion. All of the signatures are in place, but delivered with more nuance than was once the case. Consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos has ushered in quite a change at the property in his first vintage here. Tasted three times.

Quite ripe, featuring boysenberry and plum reduction notes, backed by a healthy dose of anise and fruitcake flavors. Stays focused, with solid, graphite-edged grip carrying the finish. Really promising.

93-95 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau Fonplegade 2018 Saint Emilion Grand CruLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Fonplegade 2018 Saint Emilion Grand Cru wie folgt:

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Fonplegade strides confidently out of the glass with bold black cherries, warm plums and black raspberry scents plus hints of cedar chest, pencil shavings, lavender, garrigue and camphor. Full-bodied, rich and packed with expressive black fruits, it has a firm, velvety texture and just enough freshness, finishing long.

92-95 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Fonplegade 2018 Saint Emilion Grand CruAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Fonplegade 2018 Saint Emilion Grand Cru wie folgt:

Fonplegade is rich, layered and sumptuous, to a degree it has not been before. Raspberry jam, mocha, espresso and licorice all burst out of the glass. Sensual and alluring, Fonplegade is absolutely gorgeous in 2018. The oak is just a bit pronounced at this stage, but the wine appears to have all of the natural depth to handle it. Proprietors Denise and Stephen Adams, along with consulting winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt and his team, continue to take Fonplegade to new heights. The 2018 is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, from yields of just 27 hectoliters per hectare, down from the more typical 35 or so. Tasted two times.

The 2018 Franc Mayne is gorgeous. Fresh, bright and nuanced, the 2018 has terrific balance. In this vintage, Franc Mayne is silky and polished, with more of an emphasis on understatement rather than power. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint and white pepper grace this very pretty, expressive Saint-emilion. Franc Mayne is one of the jewels of Saint-emilion in 2018. Tasted two times.

A lush and inviting style, with waves of cassis and plum puree, caressed by a velvety structure. The long and alluring finish is already well-formed. This has depth, mouthfeel and fruit to burn.

The 2018 Sansonnet is gorgeous. Vibrant, delineated and full of character, the 2018 has so much to offer. In 2018, Sansonnet is a bit restrained and yet it possesses terrific depth and energy in its black cherry, chocolate, licorice and menthol flavors. Always a rich wine, in 2018 Sansonnet has a good bit of freshness and that plays off its more overt leanings very nicely. The 2018 feels just a bit less extracted than some previous editions, and that is a good thing. Not to worry, though, there is plenty of richness and concentration. Sansonnet got better and better as my en primeur tastings progressed. The last of the four samples I tasted was the most impressive.

91-94 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni beschreibt den Chateau Laroque 2018 im Mai 2018 wie folgt:

The 2018 Laroque is a very pretty, pliant Saint-Émilion. Bright red raspberry, blood orange, mint and sweet floral notes give the 2018 striking energy to play off a core of radiant, supple fruit. Medium in body and gracious, Laroque has so much to offer in 2018. Although Laroque is not one of the most concentrated or structured Saint-Émilions, it is a wine of superb drinkability and pure pleasure. The blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Technical Director David Suire gave the 2018 lots 26-29 days on the skins fermented in cement, with manual pumpovers and punchdowns. New oak is 55%. Suire, best known for his work alongside Nicolas Thienpont, is doing great things at Laroque. Tasted four times.

Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint Emilion Grand Cru mit 95-97 Parker Punkten ausgezeichnetLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Laroque is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal fragrant black cherries, wild blueberries and blackberry preserves scents with hints of crushed rocks, underbrush and violets plus a waft of Marmite toast. Full-bodied and jam-packed with bright, crunchy black and blue fruits, it has a firm line of ripe, fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing very long and layered. Impressive! Being aged in oak barriques, 50% new, the blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

Chateau Laroque 2018 mit 95-97 Punkten von Jeb DunnuckJeb Dunnuck beschreibt den Chateau Laroque 2018 Saint Emilion Grand Cru im April 2019 wie folgt:

A blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc representing just 41% of the total production, the 2018 Château Laroque is still resting in barrels and oak tanks. Its deep purple color is followed by a classy bouquet of ripe black cherries, cassis, graphite, licorice, and crushed rocks. Deep, medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful mid-palate and ripe, silky tannins, it s an incredible success for the estate, which is firing on all cylinders today thanks to the talented David Suire!

Very juicy, with lots of blackberry and black currant compote flavors. The ample toast has yet to be fully soaked up, with notes of licorice root and singed apple wood jutting out. A bit chewy on the finish. Slightly unbridled today, but if this rounds into form it will be a real winner.

92-94 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau Barde Haut 2018 Saint EmilionLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau Barde Haut 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 Barde-Haut is a final blend composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it sashays sensuously out of the glass with effortless baked blackberries, preserved plums and blueberry pie notes plus hints of incense, powdered cinnamon, cigar box and star anise. Full-bodied and packed with spicy black and blue fruits, it is beautifully textured with firm, velvety tannins and just enough background freshness, finishing very long and seductive.

92-95 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Barde Haut 2018 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Barde Haut 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 Barde-Haut is a rich, heady wine. Crème de cassis, blackberry jam, chocolate, leather and spice race out of the glass in this flamboyant, exotically ripe Saint-emilion. There is no shortage of stuffing, but the wine needs time to come together. Specifically, the new oak needs to integrate more fully, but this is a barrel sample, and it is not uncommon to see wines at this stage showing this way. The more exotic side of the vintage is very much on display. The harvest ranged from September 29 to October 12, which is relatively drawn out by the estate's standards.

The 2018 Clos de l Oratoire is another stunning wine in Stephan von Neipperg s range. The greater presence of Cabernet Franc, along with a move towards earlier picking, no SO2 at crush and less oak influence are some of the factors that have completely transformed Clos de l Oratoire from the powerhouse it often was to a wine of total and exquisite finesse. Inky dark fruit, lavender, sage, and mint give the 2018 striking aromatic depth, but it is the wine total sense of harmony that impresses most. The 2018 is fabulous. That is all there is to it. The 2018 Faugeres is fresh, lively and quite deep, with a striking interplay of floral top notes and rich, layered fruit. I sense a shift towards a more refined style. Even so, there is plenty of the depth and textural richness readers have become accustomed to. Dark red fruit, espresso, cedar and dried flowers add lovely shades of aromatic nuance as well as energy. The 2018 is beautifully rendered. The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Proprietor Silvio Denz and consulting winemake Michel Rolland turned out a gorgeous Faugeres in 2018. My only real critique is that Faugeres and the pure Peby Faugeres are more closer in style than they usually are, which is remarkable as the blends are totally different! Tasted three times.
