Dark red fruit. espresso. cedar and dried flowers add lovely shades of aromatic nuance as well as energy. The 2018 is beautifully rendered. The blend is 85% Merlot. 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Proprietor Silvio Denz and consulting winemake Michel Rolland turned out a gorgeous Faugeres in 2018. My only real critique is that Faugeres and the pure Peby Faugeres are more closer in style than they usually are. which is remarkable as the blends are totally different! Tasted three times.

Red and black currants, tobacco, new saddle leather, chocolaty oak, and Provençal herb notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Badette, a ripe, opulent, seamless 2019 with loads to love. Based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, it has lots of background oak yet balancing fruit, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's not for the old-school Claret lovers out there, but I suspect it will turn into a classic Saint-Emilion with 5-7 years of bottle age.

From holdings just across the border from Pomerol characterized by predominantly sandy-clay soils, the 2019 Grand Corbin-Despagne offers up aromas of plums, sweet berries and cherries mingled with raw cocoa, cigar wrapper, licorice, violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent, with fine concentration, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, it's a beautifully balanced classic that will age with grace. François Despagne is the seventh generation of his family to steward this 28-hectare Saint-Émilion estate, located just across the border from Pomerol, and he is intent on bringing it back to the heights of which anyone who has tasted vintages such as 1929 or 1961 know it is capable.

Returning to the estate after some years researching wine microbiology, he dug 150 soil pits—discovering that the historic delimitation of parcels on the estate corresponded precisely to the underlying geology. Soils are thin sand over blue clay, and replanting favors Cabernet Franc (with an in-house massale selection)—which represented about 60% of the surface area before the 1956 frosts and subsequent replanting. Despagne has converted to organic and biodynamic farming, reducing yields, and that is translating to new levels of depth and concentration. In the winery and cellar, however, the approach is rather classical, with a tendency to work more reductively and preserve better purity of fruit (Thomas Duclos consults), emphasizing seamlessness and depth over extraction and impact. This is an estate to watch.

Sweet dark cherry, chocolate, leather, licorice and mocha build into the resonant, super-expressive finish. The 2019 is a classy Fombrauge.

The 2019 Fombrauge, which was bottled in spring 2021, retains the opulence that I found from barrel, still showing that heady mixture of blackberry, blueberry and a touch of cooked meat, if perhaps just requiring a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and generous, with succulent ripe tannins, a satiny texture and a gossamer finish that slips down the throat. Afford it 5–6 years and this should evolve into a lovely Saint-Émilion.

The Mangot 2019 Todeschini Distique 12 is a special cuvée that celebrates the 12 years (and counting) that the Todeschini brothers have been working together at this estate and which blends 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon to deliver a more structured, concentrated wine than the regular Mangot blend. Exhibiting aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, violets and plums, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, with a deep core of fruit that's framed by fine, powdery tannins. In the past, this wine has had a glossy, slightly modern style (in a good sense), but the 2019 has an incredibly classic feel with its oak nicely integrated and just a liquid rock-like minerality on the finish.
