Red and black currants, tobacco, new saddle leather, chocolaty oak, and Provençal herb notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Badette, a ripe, opulent, seamless 2019 with loads to love. Based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, it has lots of background oak yet balancing fruit, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's not for the old-school Claret lovers out there, but I suspect it will turn into a classic Saint-Emilion with 5-7 years of bottle age.

Nach etwa 12-14 Monaten in temperaturkontrollierten Fasskellern. wird der Wein etwa 20 Monate nach der Lese auf dem Chateau abgefüllt. Die Weinberge von Saint-Georges Cote Pavie erstrecken sich auf 5 Hektar und sind umrahmt von grandiosen Terroirs wie die von Chateau Pavie und Chateau La Gaffeliere. Die im Durchschnitt 30 Jahre alten Reben stehen auf dem Kalksteinplateau der Cote Pavie mit Lehmauflage. So ist es auch zu erklären. dass die Trauben in diesem warmen und sonnenreichen Jahrgang genügend Frische und feingliedrige Frucht aufweisen. Hier ist alles am rechten Fleck. ein grosser Genusswert aus dem Saint Emilion.

Thirty-three plots contributed to this wine, out of the 43 in production. Five went into Petit Cheval and five into bulk. The 2018 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 54% Merlot. 40% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a 3.75 pH and 14.5% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, the nose is more open at the core of the wine than the Le Petit Cheval, strutting out of the glass with bold, ripe black cherries, cassis, warm plums and raspberry preserves notes. In 2018, Cheval is a bit richer than is often the case, but that is not at all a bad thing. I am struck by how much freshness and energy the 2018 has. Hints of lavender, spice and licorice add shades of nuance, but it is the wine's overall sense of harmony that leaves the strongest impression. The 2018 Alcée, the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux from Nicolas Thienpont, has a rather thick, dense bouquet of opulent blackberry and cassis fruit. It is certainly the most sumptuous of Thienpont’s wines this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame layers of tar- and tobacco-infused black fruit. Dichotomous to the nose, the finish comes across as structured and a little more austere in style. I appreciate the focus and spiciness of this Alcée, which deserves 2–3 years in bottle. Very fine, if a bit like a jigsaw puzzle: you have to put it together in your mind!

The 2019 Haut-Brisson is elegant and understated. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and licorice open nicely, followed by sweet floral accents that add lift. There is a bit of graininess in the tannin that lurks in the background. Otherwise this is nicely done.

The 2019 Haut-Brisson has a forward, vivacious bouquet of vibrant black fruit, still showing the subtle fish-scale scent that I noticed from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip and a nicely proportioned finish that will require three or four years to absorb the oak.

Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier turned out another stellar wine with the 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion. Elegant, polished and wonderfully nuanced to the core, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. Whole clusters enhance a whole range of Cabernet Franc inflections in a wine that is immediately seductive. On the palate, the 2019 is creamy and textured. Plum, blood orange, spice, mocha and dried herbs lend an exotic quality that is so alluring. The 2019 is a mysterious, totally seductive wine that no one who is serious about Bordeaux will want to miss. To be sure, Les Carmes is far from typical, but it is incredibly unique. Its longevity is likely to be measured in multiples of decades. Quite simply, I loved it.

The 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has turned out very well in bottle. Mingling aromas of plums and cassis with notions of blood orange, warm spices and new oak, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit that's framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it's reminiscent of a more giving, extroverted version of Pouthier's superb 2016. As is now the rule at this address, some whole bunches were retained during maceration, and the wine saw a long élevage in a variety of vessels, from classic 225-liter Bordeaux barriques to foudres and amphorae. The blend is dominated by 42% Cabernet Franc, complemented by 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot.

The 2018 Clos de l Oratoire is another stunning wine in Stephan von Neipperg s range. The greater presence of Cabernet Franc. along with a move towards earlier picking. no SO2 at crush and less oak influence are some of the factors that have completely transformed Clos de l Oratoire from the powerhouse it often was to a wine of total and exquisite finesse. Inky dark fruit. lavender. sage. and mint give the 2018 striking aromatic depth. but it is the wine total sense of harmony that impresses most. The 2018 is fabulous. That is all there is to it. Tasted two times.
