The 2019 Haut-Brisson is elegant and understated. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and licorice open nicely, followed by sweet floral accents that add lift. There is a bit of graininess in the tannin that lurks in the background. Otherwise this is nicely done.

The 2019 Haut Brisson was picked 27 September until 5 October at 41hl/ha and fermented in stainless steel with sulphur addition. It has a lovely. very pure bouquet. an equal measure of red and black fruit laced with a judicious amount of new oak. Just a dab of Thai fish oil in the background. The palate is actually a different kettle of fish: much edgier than the bouquet intimates with striking acidity and tension. a little gritty in texture and charcoal-like towards the finish. This is a fascinating Saint-Émilion. maybe a tad different to the Haut Brisson that I am accustomed to. I am fascinated to see which way it goes after bottling.

This estate makes an incredibly classic, elegant Saint-Emilion. The 2018 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is based on 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 65% new French oak. Coming from a beautiful terroir on the upper plateau, it reveals a deep purple/ruby color as well as perfumed cassis and mulberry fruits intermixed with ample spring flowers, chalky minerality, violets, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it has terrific mid-palate depth, flawless balance, background oak, and polished yet significant tannins. If you want to know what limestone soil gives to a wine, try this! It has the polish and balance to offer pleasure today, yet the cellar will be your friend. This warrants 5-7 years of bottle age and will have 30+ years of prime drinking.

Tighter and more backward from bottle than barrel, it's medium to full-bodied and has a balanced, elegant texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should have two decades of overall longevity.

Red and black currants, tobacco, new saddle leather, chocolaty oak, and Provençal herb notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Badette, a ripe, opulent, seamless 2019 with loads to love. Based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, it has lots of background oak yet balancing fruit, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's not for the old-school Claret lovers out there, but I suspect it will turn into a classic Saint-Emilion with 5-7 years of bottle age.

Hints of peppery spice, vanilla and woodsmoke accent the blueberry-scented nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe, supple and concentrated, adding hints of black cherries, chocolate and licorice on the long finish. It's hard to top this sort of quality at the suggested retail of $19.

It’s one of the finest values out there.

The 2019 d'Aiguilhe has a really lovely bouquet of ample black cherry, mulberry and light floral scents, very pure and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with cedar-infused red fruit. While not as exuberant as the aromatics, this is nicely detailed and quite poised on the finish. No, I still cannot pronounce its name, but this Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is well worth seeking out.

The 2015 Malartic Lagraviere has enjoyed a fine run of form in recent vintages. This is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot with smaller portions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It has a comparatively flamboyant bouquet for the appellation with scents of raspberry, crushed strawberry, cedar and a touch of graphite that lends it a Pauillac-like veneer. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, more black than red fruit infused with pencil lead and smoke. It fans out wonderfully toward the finish, completing a wonderful Malartic Lagravière that will age with panache.

Eine Selektion von sehr alten Monastrell-Weinbergen mit geringem Erträgen sowie den Rebsorten Cabernet-Sauvignon und Syrah in der Blend. Die Weinberge liegen auf 700 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. Nach dem Ausbau erhalten Sie einen Wein mizt sehr guter bis kräftiger Konzentration. Sein Ausbau fand über 18 Monate in einer sorgfältigen Auswahl von französischen und amerikanischen Fässern statt.

Intensive kirschrote Farbe mit granatrotem Rand und kräftigem Aroma von schwarzen Früchten, Röst- und balsamische Noten. Komplex und gut strukturiert, geschmeidig und reif, angenehm am Gaumen und sehr anhaltend, mit Röst-, Kakao- und Gewürznoten. Ausgewogen und harmonisch, schmackhaft und mit einem langen, eleganten Abgang, der von der "Süße" edler Tannine aus sehr reifen Früchten geprägt ist, die ihr Potenzial in der Flasche zeigen.

I also tasted the 2019 Juan Gil (blue label), the wine formerly known as 18 Months, the time it spends in barrel. They use 100% new oak that is a mixture of French and American. The wine is ripe, oaky and heady (15.5% alcohol), but I felt a change in the oak, which seemed more integrated. When I asked Miguel Gil, he told me they had changed the toast, using less toasted barrels, from medium+ to medium, and that shows in the wine. They still believe this wine should have new oak to give it aging potential. They have also introduced optical sorting of the grapes and eliminate the raisins (by shape) and the unripe grains (by color), and that adds precision and cleanliness. 30.000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

The perfect Mediterranean vintage of 2020 delivered a 2020 Alaya Tierra that is very complete and powerful in its style, but with balance and depth and the clout to take the 15 months in new barriques. The wines from 2020 have more acidity and are a little less concentrated and especially balanced. This has 15% alcohol (the 2018 and 2018 had 15.5% and the 2017 had 16%). It has a little more balance and freshness, and despite the fact that the wine is very young and still marked by the élevage in barrel, it should come around with a little more time in bottle.
