The 2019 Haut-Brisson is elegant and understated. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and licorice open nicely, followed by sweet floral accents that add lift. There is a bit of graininess in the tannin that lurks in the background. Otherwise this is nicely done.

The 2019 Haut-Brisson has a forward, vivacious bouquet of vibrant black fruit, still showing the subtle fish-scale scent that I noticed from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip and a nicely proportioned finish that will require three or four years to absorb the oak.

This is very opulent and rich with lots of ripe fruit. Full-bodied. layered and very rich. Dried fruit and black truffles. Very velvety and flavorful. Rich. yet fresh. Less new oak for this. 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc.

The 2019 Haut-Brisson is dark. fleshy and so seductive. Succulent dark cherry. chocolate. licorice. menthol and spice all resonate in this super-appealing. mid-weight Saint-Émilion. Pretty floral notes add brightness with a bit of time in the glass. The 2019 is one of the more refined vintages I have tasted here of late.

The 2019 Haut Brisson was picked 27 September until 5 October at 41hl/ha and fermented in stainless steel with sulphur addition. It has a lovely. very pure bouquet. an equal measure of red and black fruit laced with a judicious amount of new oak. Just a dab of Thai fish oil in the background. The palate is actually a different kettle of fish: much edgier than the bouquet intimates with striking acidity and tension. a little gritty in texture and charcoal-like towards the finish. This is a fascinating Saint-Émilion. maybe a tad different to the Haut Brisson that I am accustomed to. I am fascinated to see which way it goes after bottling.

This estate makes an incredibly classic, elegant Saint-Emilion. The 2018 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is based on 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 65% new French oak. Coming from a beautiful terroir on the upper plateau, it reveals a deep purple/ruby color as well as perfumed cassis and mulberry fruits intermixed with ample spring flowers, chalky minerality, violets, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it has terrific mid-palate depth, flawless balance, background oak, and polished yet significant tannins. If you want to know what limestone soil gives to a wine, try this! It has the polish and balance to offer pleasure today, yet the cellar will be your friend. This warrants 5-7 years of bottle age and will have 30+ years of prime drinking.

Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and blood orange gradually open in the glass, all framed by veins of chalky minerality. The 2018 is a fabulous wine in the making, but readers have to be patient. Time in a decanter or simply in the glass helps to bring out the wine's considerable depth.

The Cabernet Franc-dominated 2018 Château Petit Gravet Aîné (there's 20% Merlot) comes from the upper plateau in Saint-Emilion and was raised in new French oak. It's handled its élevage nicely and has just subtle vanilla and spicy oak notes as well as impressive red, black, and blue fruits intermixed with notes of acacia flowers, spice box, forest floor, and tobacco. Tighter and more backward from bottle than barrel, it's medium to full-bodied and has a balanced, elegant texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should have two decades of overall longevity.

Bursting from the glass with notes of plus, sweet red berries and hints of licorice, the 2019 Mangot is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with beautifully powdery tannins and a succulent core of fruit. Giving, charming and lively, it has turned out very well. Traditional barriques are complemented by amphorae in the chai.

Chateau Badette 2019 Saint Emilion

Red and black currants, tobacco, new saddle leather, chocolaty oak, and Provençal herb notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Badette, a ripe, opulent, seamless 2019 with loads to love. Based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, it has lots of background oak yet balancing fruit, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's not for the old-school Claret lovers out there, but I suspect it will turn into a classic Saint-Emilion with 5-7 years of bottle age.

The Mangot 2019 Todeschini Distique 12 is a special cuvée that celebrates the 12 years (and counting) that the Todeschini brothers have been working together at this estate and which blends 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon to deliver a more structured, concentrated wine than the regular Mangot blend. Exhibiting aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, violets and plums, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, with a deep core of fruit that's framed by fine, powdery tannins. This shows plenty of potential.
