The 2019 Gloria is a powerful, brooding Saint-Julien. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried flowers, menthol, herbs and cedar lend quite a bit of character. In 2019, Gloria is defined by its intensely feral personality and tannins. Perhaps time will help. Today, Gloria does not appear to be quite the charmer that it can be.

The 2019 Gloria has turned out very well, delivering aromas of blackcurrants, plums, burning embers and a deft framing of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with a vibrant core of ripe and fleshy fruit, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully firm finish, this shows considerable promise.

The 2019 Gloria continues a strong run of form - those rustic Glorias of the 1970s and 1980s are a distant memory. This has a precise and detailed bouquet that offers blackberry. briary. cedar and light tobacco aromas that gently unfurl in the glass. The palate is very well structured with a lovely citric undercurrent lending freshness and sharpness. This is a nimble Saint-Julien. athletic in build with a sapid finish that urges you back for another sip. Excellent.

The 2019 Branaire-Ducru unwinds in the glass with aromas of raspberries, blackcurrants, sweet soil tones and hints of cigar wrapper, rose petals and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's youthfully tightly wound, with terrific concentration, tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. While this is a little reserved out of the gates, its energy and classical proportions will richly reward bottle age.

The 2019 Branaire-Ducru is rich, layered and sumptuous. Black cherry, licorice, spice, leather tobacco and tar build effortlessly in the glass. The 2019 impresses with its density and pure power, which makes it perhaps atypical for Branaire by its historic standards, but it may be the direction the château seems to be headed in. The aromatics are a bit closed right now, but time in bottle should help take care of that.

The 2019 Branaire-Ducru is one that I was eager to re-taste in bottle. Deep in color, it has a very well-defined nose of tightly packed dark berries, the tobacco element less obvious than before, and slightly more floral, with light sous-bois notes developing with aeration. The 60% new oak is neatly integrated. The palate shows real vivacity and tension on the entry and delivers crunchy black fruit, touches of blue fruit and a little iodine. Sappy from start to finish, this has a real saline tang that urges you back for another sip. There is definitely is more substance compared to previous vintages, and I wager that this represents the best Branaire-Ducru in recent years. 13.7% alcohol

Like its stablemate Langoa Barton, the 2019 Léoville Barton is a timeless classic, made for patient connoisseurs. Offering up aromas of blackcurrants, plums, pencil shavings and licorice, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its deep core of fruit framed by a chassis of rich, powdery tannin that makes itself felt on the youthfully firm finish. While it's clearly built for the long haul, its structural seamlessness and mid-palate plenitude mark it out as one of the finest wines from this château in recent times. Could it be a more concentrated modern-day version of Anthony Barton's brilliant 1985?

The flagship 2019 Château Léoville Barton is brilliant, showing both the style of the estate as well as the vintage beautifully. It's never the biggest or richest wine, yet it has a classic, vibrant, structured style that ages beautifully. Pure cassis, black currants, scorched earth, new leather, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a lively spine of acidity, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. This textbook Léoville Barton demands a decade of bottle age and will keep for 30-40 years.

The 2019 Léoville Barton is so impressive. Rich and heady in the glass, the 2019 offers up a beguiling mix of dark fruit intermingled with scents to tobacco, gravel, pencil shavings, leather, licorice, scorched earth and cloves. Today, Léoville Barton is decidedly virile, imposing and in need of cellaring. It is also hugely impressive. Léoville Barton is one of the first Bordeaux I tasted, many years ago. It remains a favorite for its combination of quality, personality and fair price, all values the late Anthony Barton championed during his long and distinguished career.

Brought up in a mix of new and used barrels, it's more about finesse than power, offering a gorgeous perfume of ripe black cherries, mulberries, cassis, violets, spring flowers, and chalky minerality. Full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an enveloping core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, it's a strong effort in a crowd-pleasing style.

TThis estate has been delivering the goods for numerous vintages now, and the 2019 Château Tour Saint Christophe is another terrific wine. Ripe black cherries, black raspberries, graphite, new leather, and chalky minerality all define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a tight, straight, focused texture, ripe yet present tannins, and outstanding length. It doesn't have the mid-palate density or opulence of the 2018, but it’s more pretty, focused, and straight on the palate. Give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

The 2019 Tour Saint Christophe builds on the promise it showed from barrel. This sample was actually tasted at my home, where I afforded it a two-hour decant. It revealed precocious yet controlled blackberry and blueberry fruit scents, with that violet component still intact. The tannins have not lost any of their grippiness or assertiveness. This is a Saint-Émilion that is in for the long haul. Great potential.

... ist der Winkl ist ein saftiger, zart fruchtiger und mineralischer Sauvignon Blanc, wie Kellermeister Rudi Kofler unterstreicht: "Farbe: intensiv leuchtendes strohgelb mit dezent grünem Schimmer. Geruch: Fruchtbetonte Aromen von Aprikosen, Mandarinen und Passionsfrucht vermischen sich mit aromatischen Duftkomponenten von Holunderblüten, Stachelbeere und Minze. Geschmack: Am Gaumen setzt sich der fruchtige Eindruck gepaart mit einer feinen Säure fort. Besonders überzeugt gute Struktur sowie der mineralische und gleichzeitig aromareiche Abgang."

Immer ein guter Kauf, meinte Monica Larner noch im Dezember 2022 über den Terlan Winkl Sauvignon Blanc. Dem Jahrgang 2021 gab sie 93 Punkte: "Er ist duftend und blumig mit kräftigen Aromen, die aus dem Glas hervorstechen. Sie wissen definitiv, dass Sie einen Sauvignon Blanc vor sich haben, aber im Gegensatz zu einigen Exemplaren aus der Neuen Welt, die sich auf grüne Noten von Kiwi und Tomatenblättern konzentrieren, hat dieser Wein eine sehr kristalline oder weiße Persönlichkeit mit Kalkstein, Litschi und knackiger Birne. Wenn Sie diese Rebsorte lieben, kommen Sie hier voll auf Ihre Kosten." Von einem "sehr klassischen Südtiroler Sauvignon Blanc mit viel gelbem Grapefruitaroma, aber auch vielen kräuterigen und süßen pflanzlichen Noten (z.B. grüne Bohnen, Spargel, etc.)" spricht James Suckling, der den Jahrgang 2021 92 Punkte gab. "Saftig und lebendig, aber auch gut strukturiert, hat dieser Wein eine beeindruckende Tiefe im hellen Abgang."

Domaine de Chevalier 2019 rouge Pessac Leognan

The 2019 Domaine de Chevalier is a magical wine in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of wild plums, crushed blackcurrants and violets mingled with hints of pencil shavings, subtle spices and coniferous forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a vibrant core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and lively acids, it's exquisitely elegant and harmonious, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Stylistically, this wine exhibits a much closer affinity with the great Domaine de Chevalier of yesteryear than much of what was produced here in the early 2000s. It's a masterclass in what contemporary Bordeaux can deliver, and worth a special effort to seek out.

The 2019 Domaine de Chevalier remains a little reticent on the nose at first and takes time to unfurl in the glass (often a good sign, in my book), revealing black fruit, crushed rock, undergrowth and just a touch of brine, perhaps less than in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied, poised and harmonious, with fine-grained tannins, wonderful mineralité and a gentle build toward the saline finish. It gains weight and cohesion with aeration. A noble Domaine de Chevalier that will age with style.

The 2019 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits notions of minty cassis, plums, loamy soil, burning embers and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety palate that’s deep and concentrated, its generous core of lively fruit concealing an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannin. Consisting of fully 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is another true classic from the Borie family.

The 2019 Grand Puy Lacoste, as usual, requires plenty of aeration in the glass. Then boom! You get that gorgeous, classic Pauillac raspberry and blackberry fruit infused with cedar and pencil box scents. The harmonious, poised palate has wonderful focus, very fine tannins and a silky-smooth texture. As I remarked in my previous note, it’s very pliant and persistent, with a graphite-tinged finish. A glorious Grand Puy Lacoste that will need time to assimilate the oak – but hey, GPL lovers know the rules.

This is one of the best Kirwans in recent years and yet I still feel this Margaux can reach higher.
