The 2019 is a big wine, but the 15.1% alcohol is not especially evident.

The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly lactic entry and fine acidity, maybe not quite as "crunchy" as I recall, yet still satisfyingly persistent.

That interplay makes for an absolutely compelling wine. Red cherry fruit. mint. dried flowers. cedar and tobacco add aromatic nuance to this highly expressive. vibrant Saint-Estèphe. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon. 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Tasted two times.

This dense purple-hued beauty boasts a stunning nose of blackcurrants, crème de cassis, tobacco, baking spices, chocolate, and cedarwood. With full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, gorgeous tannins, and one seriously long finish, it hits that palate with 15% alcohol, yet you wouldn't know it by tasting it, and the wine is perfectly balanced, has incredible purity of fruit, and stays fresh and lively, with a clean finish. This magical Saint-Estèphe can be drunk any time over the coming 20+ years.

The 2019 Ormes de Pez has an intense bouquet of blackberry, bilberry and a touch of hoisin, but none of the smoky elements that I commented upon from the barrel sample last year. Nicely delineated and certainly less rustic than past vintages. The palate is finely tuned with a touch of bitter cherry on the entry, quite peppery, and a little stricter than I expected at the moment, leading to a granular, almost truffly finish.

This shows lots of spice, such as cloves and nutmeg, together with dark berries and cherries and some plums. It’s structured and relatively dense, with lovely length and beauty. Needs time to open and come together. 50% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon with cabernet franc and petit verdot. Lovely now. Try after 2024.

Even with all of its intensity. the 2016 is distinguished by its sense of freshness. lift and nuance. much of which comes from the 18% Cabernet Franc in the blend. Sweet floral. spice and minty notes add aromatic intensity to a core of sweet red cherry and plum fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure. but the tannins are sweet. silky and perfectly ripe. In short. the 2016 Calon Ségur is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Technical Director Vincent Millet and his team did a tremendous job with the 2016. Tasted three times.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. perhaps suppler than Cos d’Estournel and more velvety in terms of texture. A dash of cracked black pepper and allspice appears toward the finish. which fans out gloriously. A brilliant wine from François Millet and his team.

2020 beendete das Jahrzehnt auf einem Höhepunkt. Einer der besten frühreifenden Sorten Jahrgänge. Als Überflieger gelang es ihm, das Beste daraus zu machen Extreme Bedingungen, um die perfekte Balance zu erreichen. Das Jahr war geprägt von einem milden Winter mit einem frühen Wachstumszyklus. dann ein sonniger, feuchter Frühling mit gleichmäßiger Blüte. Der Sommer war heiß mit Hitzewellen vom 20. Juni bis 10. August und Rekordtemperaturen über 40°C. Trotz der Hitze litten die Reben nicht darunter Wasserstress. Die Fähigkeit des Bodens, Quell- und Winterwasser zu speichern, ist vorhanden machte den Unterschied in Ton-Kalkstein-Unterböden aus. Eine Regenperiode vor dem 15. August sorgte für willkommene Erleichterung. Im Vergleich zu „normalen“ Jahrgängen begann die Ernte zwei Wochen früher. Der Cabernet und Merlot sind unglaublich aromatisch. Die Säfte sind tief- gefärbt, konzentriert und reif, während die Qualität der Tannine gleich ist sehr vielversprechend. 2020 zählt zu den großen Jahrgängen. Es ist das perfekte Beispiel dafür Bordeaux-Know-how: ein sonniger, aber frischer Jahrgang mit Mineralität und Spannung und ein vielversprechendes Alterungspotenzial.
