The 2019 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits notions of minty cassis, plums, loamy soil, burning embers and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety palate that’s deep and concentrated, its generous core of lively fruit concealing an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannin. Consisting of fully 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is another true classic from the Borie family.

6 Dec, 2021 – This is a very polished young wine with lemon-rind, blackcurrant, cedar and lavender character. It’s full, yet so refined and sophisticated, with floral undertones to the pretty fruit. The tannins are intense and long. Give this at least five or six years to soften. Try after 2025.

Crushed red berry fruit, sweet red berries, mint, spice, blood orange and mint give the 2019 a brilliant aromatic register that adds to the wine's total sense of allure. The 2019 is such a classy wine.

The 2019 Grand Puy Lacoste, as usual, requires plenty of aeration in the glass. Then boom! You get that gorgeous, classic Pauillac raspberry and blackberry fruit infused with cedar and pencil box scents. The harmonious, poised palate has wonderful focus, very fine tannins and a silky-smooth texture. As I remarked in my previous note, it’s very pliant and persistent, with a graphite-tinged finish. A glorious Grand Puy Lacoste that will need time to assimilate the oak – but hey, GPL lovers know the rules.

The 2019 Grand Puy Lacoste is deep purple in colour. Initially the bouquet is tight and so I left my sample for 15-20 minutes to open. It rewards patience with a beguiling mélange of pure blackberry. raspberry. crushed violet and pencil shavings. very focused and mineral-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins. Compared to the robust. tannic GPL's of old. this is much more lithe and approachable. yet it still bears the DNA of this Pauillac estate. It might not possess the flair of other 2019 Left Banks. but that it is not what I seek from this estate. Classy and full of breeding - quintessential Pauillac.

Mittelkräftig, weich, elegant, frisch und kreidig mit Nuancen von Kreide, Tabakblatt, Waldboden und roten sowie schwarzen Johannisbeeren. Der Wein ist weich und cremig mit einer schönen Süße am elegant gestalteten Gaumen, es gibt viel Charme sowie Frische. Der Wein besteht aus 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot und 2% Cabernet Franc. Interessant ist, dass Batailley als erster bedeutender Wein des Jahrgangs 2021 veröffentlicht wurde und zum gleichen Preis wie der Jahrgang 2020 angeboten wurde. Die Zeit wird zeigen, ob dies eine gute Strategie war oder nicht. Trinkreif von 2026 bis 2049.

NEAL MARTIN
Der 2021er Batailley genießt förmlich ein kühleres, herausforderndes Jahrgangsprofil wie dieses. Er hat ein gut definiertes, sauberes, frisches, klassisch gestaltetes Bouquet mit einem von Bleistiftspänen durchzogenen schwarzen Fruchtaroma, das nur aus Pauillac stammen kann. Der Gaumen ist mittelgewichtig mit sanftem Griff, sehr harmonisch mit weißen Pfeffer- und Salbei-Noten, die sich sanft im Mund aufbauen und in einem zusammenhängenden, langen, von Graphit geprägten Abgang gipfeln. Dies ist ein Batailley, der sich in seiner eigenen Haut wohlfühlt. Ich vermute, dass er 25-30 Jahre Trinkvergnügen bieten wird.

Batailley ist einer der seltenen 2021er Weine, der Zeit braucht, um sich zu entwickeln. Seine Intensität, Breite und allgemeine Persistenz sind beeindruckend. Es gibt hier eine echte texturale Resonanz, ganz zu schweigen von der Fülle an Charakter.

Erstmals seit 2011 ist der Merlotanteil wieder etwas höher, das Bukett entsprechend mehr von Herzkirschen geprägt, als vom üblich Cassis de Pauillac, zart nach Nougat und Karamell, feine Kräuterwürze. Kraftvoll, engmaschig, zeigt gute Süße, schokoladiger Touch, reife Tannine, große Komplexität, tolle Länge und Würze, eine sehr eigenständige Persönlichkeit, ein Riesenversprechen für die Zukunft, was sich En Primeur bereitsb angekündigtte: dieser Wein hat alles, was ein Weltklassewein braucht.

The aromas to this are really amazing, with a potpourri of spices and dried flowers, as well as redcurrants, sweet plums and even some peaches. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate in an encompassing yet always elegant and pure way. It’s succulent and unadulterated. Like crushed, perfectly ripened grapes. The length is rather endless. The tannins build. Fabulous young red. 35% in amphora and the rest in 50% new oak and 15% one-year oak. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2028, but an absolute joy to taste now.

The 2019 Pontet-Canet was so effusive and generous en primeur. Today, though, it is quite reticent. That won't be an issue for those who can be patient, but patience indeed will be the key here. Dark red fleshed fruit, tobacco, cedar, spice, kirsch, mint and blood orange gradually open with a bit of coaxing. Imposing tannins wrap it all together. The 2019 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty, but it needs time.

The 2019 Pontet Canet was picked from September 23 until October 10, finishing with the Petit Verdot, and bottled in mid-June/July. My sample, tasted at the property, was decanted. Matured in 50% new oak and 35% concrete amphora, this is endowed with an intense, enveloping bouquet of opulent blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed violet and light fig aromas, becoming more floral with aeration and revealing crushed violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with layered black fruit, cracked black pepper, hints of pencil lead and a splash of soy. This is one of the most powerful Pauillac wines that I encountered this vintage, very juicy and with plenty of rondeur on the very spicy finish. This should give three decades of drinking pleasure.

The 2019 Batailley has an intense bouquet of blackberry, graphite and light tobacco scents, the latter less pronounced than out of barrel. This feels supremely well-defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins and pure black fruit laced with cracked black pepper and graphite, leading to a complex and quite prolonged finish. One of the best Batailleys, maybe the best, in recent years, and a strong follow-up to their splendid 2018. Highly recommended and still one of the best values in Pauillac.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, good backbone, firm grip and much more substance on the finish compared to previous vintages, that tincture of Earl Grey coming through with time. This is an excellent, classically styled Pauillac.

Based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2019 Château D'Armailhac showed beautifully from barrel two years ago, and it doesn’t disappoint now from bottle. Despite the high Merlot content, it has a firmer, focused, youthful style that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring. Giving up plenty of ripe black cherry, mulberries, and cassis-like fruit as well as textbook Pauillac lead pencil, forest floor, and tobacco, it's medium to full-bodied, has good mid-palate density, subtle background oak, ripe yet building tannins, and a great finish. It shows the vintage's more elegant, classic style yet doesn't lack for concentration or length. It's going to benefit from just 3-4 years of bottle age and drink fabulously well for two decades. It's the finest d’Armailhac I've tasted.

Maybe just a little abrupt on the finish at the moment, but that will fill out in time.

The 2019 Echo De Lynch-Bages is the second wine of Château Lynch-Bages and it's beautifully done, with a more floral, perfumed, pretty style compared to the Grand Vin, yet it still brings plenty of structure. Red and black currants, sappy flowers, tobacco leaf, and gravelly earth all define the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied, has integrated acidity, gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully balanced and already accessible, yet will nevertheless benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age.

Chateau Lynch Bages 2019 Pauillac

The 2019 Château Lynch-Bages is stunningly good, and it's going to be interesting to compare this to the 2018 over the coming decades. Based on 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 75% new French oak, its dense purple hue is followed by an incredible bouquet of pure crème de cassis, freshly sharpened cedar pencil, spring flowers, smoke, and graphite, with an almost liqueur of rocks-like minerality. A massive, incredibly concentrated Lynch-Bages, Jean-Charles has hit a home run in the vintage, and this sensational wine has building, perfect tannins, insane purity, and a finish that won't quit. It has the purity, finesse, balance, and depth to offer pleasure not only today but to evolve for 40 to 50 years. Smart money will hide these for a good 7-8 years, but wow, what a wine. Bravo.

Fantastic blackberries, blackcurrants, lead pencil and violets. So Pauillac on the nose! Full-bodied with a dense, layered palate and tight yet plush tannins that give the wine layers and gravitas. Compact. Long finish. Silky. Reminds me of a modern, classic version of something like the wonderful 1985 Lynch. Try after 2026.

A true classic from this estate, the 2019 Lynch-Bages has turned out brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and sweet blackberry fruit mingled with licorice, mint, cigar wrapper and loamy soil. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's a deep, multidimensional wine built around a chassis of rich, powdery tannins and succulent balancing acids. The last vintage produced in Lynch-Bages old winery, it will be interesting to compare this benchmark wine with subsequent vintages over the coming years.

The 2019 Lynch Bages is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel, if not moreso. What a wine! Towering and vertical in its bearing, the 2019 is a total stunner. There is plenty of Lynch Bages charm, but what distinguishes the 2019 most is its spine of tannin and energy. Time in the glass brings out sweet red cherry, plum, blood orange and pomegranate and mint. The 2019 is a great, great, great Lynch Bages. It reminds me of the epic 1989, but with the youthful grip of this vintage. A towering Pauillac, the 2019 Lynch Bages will make a great addition to any cellar.

The 2019 Lynch-Bages is a Pauillac that needs more encouragement from the glass compared to its peers, eventually revealing blackberry, pencil box and cedar scents that could only come from this appellation. Wonderfully delineated, and it seems to finally respond to aeration and gain intensity. The 2019 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild is one heck of a second wine and has a rare level of depth and density. A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot, it reveals a dense ruby/purple hue to go with textbook Pauillac notes of cedar pencil, smoke tobacco, spice box, blackcurrants, and graphite. Deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, it's probably better than many vintages of the Grand Vin. I absolutely love its purity of fruit, balance, and structure. It needs a healthy decant if drinking any time soon and will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age, but it will have over two decades of longevity. Just don't tell yourself it's a second wine and you'll think you're drinking the Grand Vin.

The 2019 Le Petit Mouton is notably serious this year, offering up a rich bouquet of minty berries, cherries, licorice and toasty new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

Readers will find a rich. flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here. but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks. graphite. lavender. blackberry. plum. and violet infuse a Saint-Émilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all. the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent. dark Saint-Émilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it.
