The 2018 is beautifully done. The blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. This estate is in a cool, limestone terroir on the eastern side of Saint- Emilion, and it's been firing on all cylinders over the past decade, in no small part due to the talented director, David Suire. The 2018 Château Laroque checks in as almost all Merlot (there is 3% Cabernet Franc) that comes from an incredibly strict selection of just 41% of the total production. Brought up in a mix of new and used barrels, it's more about finesse than power, offering a gorgeous perfume of ripe black cherries, mulberries, cassis, violets, spring flowers, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and incredibly elegant on the palate, it builds nicely with time in the glass, has ultra-fine tannins, flawlessly integrated tannins, acidity and fruit, and a great finish. It's as classy as they come. Approachable today with a decant, it will drink nicely for 20 years or more. Readers looking for an impeccably made, classic, high-quality Saint-Emilion that doesn't break the bank should back up the truck for this beauty.

Revealing a deep ruby/purple hue as well as great aromatics of black cherries, tobacco leaf, spicy oak, and loamy earth, it's medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has silky tannins, and a great finish. It's just an impeccably made, satisfying, classic Right Bank beauty to drink over the coming 10-12 years. Bravo!

The 2018 Alcée, the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux from Nicolas Thienpont, has a rather thick, dense bouquet of opulent blackberry and cassis fruit. It is certainly the most sumptuous of Thienpont’s wines this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame layers of tar- and tobacco-infused black fruit. Dichotomous to the nose, the finish comes across as structured and a little more austere in style. I appreciate the focus and spiciness of this Alcée, which deserves 2–3 years in bottle. Very fine, if a bit like a jigsaw puzzle: you have to put it together in your mind!

Adeptly produced by the team of Cheval Blanc (who purchased the estate in 2008), the wine nonetheless maintained its poise under the dry. warm ripening conditions of 2018, coming in at a respectable pH of 3.67 and relatively moderate alcohol of 14.1%. The 2018 Quinault l Enclos is blended of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc with 50% new oak and the rest in one-year-old barrels - but only 500-liter and foudres. Deep purple-black in color, it slips seductively out of the glass with notions of warm plums, blueberry preserves and mulberries with touches of spice box, tilled soil, black olives and licorice plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with muscular black fruit and licorice sparks, framed by rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a peppery kick.

The 2018 Quinault L Enclos is impressive. Creamy and ample, the 2018 stands out for its textural breadth. There is a level of intensity in the 2018 that previous vintages have not achieved, with a balance of Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that is striking for such a young wine. All of the work the Cheval Blanc team has done here over the last ten years have begun to pay off big time. Half of the property was replanted between 2008 and 2012 with more Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc from Cheval and Merlot on later-ripening rootstock. In the glass, the 2018 Quinault offers a striking interplay of floral and savory aromatic and layered fruit, with ripe, silky tannins that caress a core of plush, plaint fruit and a gorgeous, saline-infused finish. There is a level of precision in the 2018 that is positively breathtaking.

From holdings just across the border from Pomerol characterized by predominantly sandy-clay soils, the 2019 Grand Corbin-Despagne offers up aromas of plums, sweet berries and cherries mingled with raw cocoa, cigar wrapper, licorice, violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent, with fine concentration, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, it's a beautifully balanced classic that will age with grace. François Despagne is the seventh generation of his family to steward this 28-hectare Saint-Émilion estate, located just across the border from Pomerol, and he is intent on bringing it back to the heights of which anyone who has tasted vintages such as 1929 or 1961 know it is capable.

Returning to the estate after some years researching wine microbiology, he dug 150 soil pits—discovering that the historic delimitation of parcels on the estate corresponded precisely to the underlying geology. Soils are thin sand over blue clay, and replanting favors Cabernet Franc (with an in-house massale selection)—which represented about 60% of the surface area before the 1956 frosts and subsequent replanting. Despagne has converted to organic and biodynamic farming, reducing yields, and that is translating to new levels of depth and concentration. In the winery and cellar, however, the approach is rather classical, with a tendency to work more reductively and preserve better purity of fruit (Thomas Duclos consults), emphasizing seamlessness and depth over extraction and impact. This is an estate to watch.

The 2018 Château Larcis Ducasse checks in as 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc that comes from a gorgeous hillside terroir on the Côte Pavie, located between Château Pavie and Château Bellefont-Belcier. Aged 18 months in 60% new barrels, it offers a truly sensational bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, espresso roast, scorched earth, bloody meat, chocolate, iron, and bouquet garni. A massive, super-rich Saint-Emilion with a dense, concentrated, layered mouthfeel, it has building yet sweet tannins and incredible purity of fruit. Reminding me of the 2005 shortly after release, this heavenly juice offers astonishing richness and depth while staying flawlessly balanced and elegant. Sadly, there are less than 3,000 cases produced, but this monumental, legendary wine won't hit maturity for a good 8-10 years and will have 40-50 years of longevity if well stored. Hats off to Nicolas Thienpont and consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt for producing one of the wines of the vintage as well as one of the greatest young Bordeaux I've ever tasted.

Von einem Weingut, das in letzter Zeit eine unglaubliche Erfolgsserie hatte – vor allem dank der Talente von Direktor David Suire – zeigt der 2020 Château Laroque den kühleren, kalksteinbetonten Stil des Terroirs auf wunderschöne Weise. Er präsentiert eine klare, fokussierte Stilistik mit dunklen (fast bläulichen) Beerenfrüchten, kreidiger Mineralität, Veilchen, Gewürzen und floralen Nuancen. Am Gaumen mittelkräftig, ist dieser fokussierte, gradlinige und bemerkenswert reine Saint-Émilion von großartiger Tiefe im Mittelgaumen und einem hervorragenden Abgang. Er sollte, wenn möglich, für solide 4–5 Jahre im Keller verborgen bleiben und wird eine Langlebigkeit von 30 Jahren haben. Wenn er schon bald getrunken wird, sollte er für eine Stunde in der Karaffe belüftet werden.

Der 2020 Laroque ist sehr gelungen und entfaltet Aromen von Kirschen, minzigen Brombeeren, Lakritz und Lorbeerblatt. Dunkle reife Frucht, etwas sogar ins schwarzbeerige gehende. Ein paar vegetabile Noten zeigen sich, an rote Beete erinnernd, aber auch weisser Pfeffer, Cassis und ein touch Kaffee. Der Laroque 2021 öffnet sich im Glas mit Aromen von dunklen, minzigen Beeren, Orangenschale und gerösteter Eiche. Am Gaumen präsentiert er sich mittel- bis vollmundig, fleischig und vielschichtig, mit einem süßen Fruchtkern, geschmeidigen Tanninen und einem langen, mineralischen Abgang. Dieser Wein hat sich in der Flasche sehr schön entwickelt, und aufgrund seines niedrigen pH-Profils wird er wahrscheinlich von etwas Flaschenreife profitieren. 92+ Punkte.

Excellent, but give it 24 months in bottle, because the nose needs time to find its mojo.

Bereits jetzt lang und zufriedenstellend, braucht jedoch noch drei bis vier Jahre, um sich vollständig zu entfalten. Ab 2023 genießen.

Eine großartige Leistung eines Weinguts, das lange Zeit als schlafender Riese von Saint-Émilion galt. Der 2019 Laroque entfaltet im Glas Aromen von Kirschen, Lakritz, lehmiger Erde, Rosenblättern und süßem Tabak. Mittel- bis vollmundig, großzügig und vielschichtig, zeigt er Tiefe und Konzentration mit saftigen Säuren, pudrigen Tanninen und einem nahtlosen, harmonischen Profil. Er ist auf jeden Fall einen Versuch wert.
