The 2019 Gloria is a powerful, brooding Saint-Julien. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried flowers, menthol, herbs and cedar lend quite a bit of character. In 2019, Gloria is defined by its intensely feral personality and tannins. Perhaps time will help. Today, Gloria does not appear to be quite the charmer that it can be.

The 2019 Gloria has turned out very well, delivering aromas of blackcurrants, plums, burning embers and a deft framing of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with a vibrant core of ripe and fleshy fruit, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully firm finish, this shows considerable promise.

The 2019 Gloria continues a strong run of form - those rustic Glorias of the 1970s and 1980s are a distant memory. This has a precise and detailed bouquet that offers blackberry. briary. cedar and light tobacco aromas that gently unfurl in the glass. The palate is very well structured with a lovely citric undercurrent lending freshness and sharpness. This is a nimble Saint-Julien. athletic in build with a sapid finish that urges you back for another sip. Excellent.

The 2019 Branaire-Ducru unwinds in the glass with aromas of raspberries, blackcurrants, sweet soil tones and hints of cigar wrapper, rose petals and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's youthfully tightly wound, with terrific concentration, tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. While this is a little reserved out of the gates, its energy and classical proportions will richly reward bottle age.

The 2019 Branaire-Ducru is rich, layered and sumptuous. Black cherry, licorice, spice, leather tobacco and tar build effortlessly in the glass. The 2019 impresses with its density and pure power, which makes it perhaps atypical for Branaire by its historic standards, but it may be the direction the château seems to be headed in. The aromatics are a bit closed right now, but time in bottle should help take care of that.

The 2019 Branaire-Ducru is one that I was eager to re-taste in bottle. Deep in color, it has a very well-defined nose of tightly packed dark berries, the tobacco element less obvious than before, and slightly more floral, with light sous-bois notes developing with aeration. The 60% new oak is neatly integrated. The palate shows real vivacity and tension on the entry and delivers crunchy black fruit, touches of blue fruit and a little iodine. Sappy from start to finish, this has a real saline tang that urges you back for another sip. There is definitely is more substance compared to previous vintages, and I wager that this represents the best Branaire-Ducru in recent years. 13.7% alcohol

Like its stablemate Langoa Barton, the 2019 Léoville Barton is a timeless classic, made for patient connoisseurs. Offering up aromas of blackcurrants, plums, pencil shavings and licorice, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its deep core of fruit framed by a chassis of rich, powdery tannin that makes itself felt on the youthfully firm finish. While it's clearly built for the long haul, its structural seamlessness and mid-palate plenitude mark it out as one of the finest wines from this château in recent times. Could it be a more concentrated modern-day version of Anthony Barton's brilliant 1985?

The flagship 2019 Château Léoville Barton is brilliant, showing both the style of the estate as well as the vintage beautifully. It's never the biggest or richest wine, yet it has a classic, vibrant, structured style that ages beautifully. Pure cassis, black currants, scorched earth, new leather, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a lively spine of acidity, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. This textbook Léoville Barton demands a decade of bottle age and will keep for 30-40 years.

Today, Léoville Barton is decidedly virile, imposing and in need of cellaring. It is also hugely impressive. Léoville Barton is one of the first Bordeaux I tasted, many years ago. It remains a favorite for its combination of quality, personality and fair price, all values the late Anthony Barton championed during his long and distinguished career.

The purity and finesse are truly something here, and while it already offers pleasure, it deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20+ years.

This is an especially succulent, richly textured Langoa, and that's not a bad thing for a wine that in some vintages is a bit light.

Napanook 2020 Napa Valley Yountville

Die Dominus Estate, Yountville, Kalifornien, wurde 1983 von Christian Moueix gegründet. Sie liegt auf dem berühmten Napanook-Weinberg und war in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren die Quelle der Früchte für einige der besten Weine des Napa Valley. Die Geschichte des Weinbergs lässt sich bis zu den Anfängen des Napa Valley zurückverfolgen: 1838 pflanzte George Yount, nach dem die Stadt Yountville benannt wurde, dort erstmals Weinreben an. Der Duft von roten Johannisbeeren und Kirschen weist den Weg, unterstützt von Noten von dunkler Schokolade und Mokka. Bottled in July 2017. Dominus’ more approachable. less tannic sister wine. Napanook. is a blend this year of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon. 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2015 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine is redolent of crème de cassis. potpourri. plum preserves and violets with hints of dark chocolate. menthol. licorice and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is densely packed with black fruit preserves and earthy layers. supported by firm. ripe. fine-grained tannins and finishing with great length.

Christian Moueix began our tasting of the 2015 vintage with a big smile. “We loved the vintage from the beginning.” he commented simply. Dominus winemaker Tod Mostero explained why 2015 was special: “We had a lot of winter rain—15 inches in December 2014. But then we had a very dry spring—just two inches in March and April. This equated to less vegetative growth. because when you have very little rain in spring. the vegetative growth tends to be limited. This means you need less water in the summer. since the vines prepare themselves for a dry growing season. Because we dry farm. the roots grow deeper and access water that normally wouldn’t be available. We had a similar profile in 2013. The 2015 temperatures were higher than normal but not excessive. Yields were about the same as 2013—smaller than average. The grapes were small. We experienced an early budburst. flowering and harvest. with harvest starting on September 2nd and finished by September 30th."

Der Kern ist dicht und undurchsichtig, nur eine minimale Aufhellung zum Rand hin. Die Nase bietet eine Fülle dunklen schwarzen Beeren, süsse Kirschnuancen, eine frische kühlende Nuance. Sehr behutsames Toasting, man hat wohl aus dem 2015er seine Schlüsse gezogen und geht etwas behutsamer mit dem Neuholzanteil um. Im Mund totale Balance bei maximalem aromatischen Druck. Perfekt polierte Tannine, lang, frisch, kühl, druckvoll und nochmal lang! Einfach ein genialer Weinwert, dessen Winemaker-Team den Jahrgang perfekt interpretiert hat. 93-95 Punkte.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged for around 18 months in oak barrels, 40% new, the 2018 Tour Saint Christophe weighs in at 14.6% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with bold notions of baked black cherries, plum preserves and blueberry pie plus underlying suggestions of Christmas cake, Chinese five spice and dusty soil. The full-bodied palate packs in the black and blue fruit preserves layers, framed by velvety tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and spicy.

The 2018 Tour Saint Christophe represents a new level of elegance, precision and finesse for this estate in Saint-Émilion's Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes district. Silky and exceptionally polished, the 2018 oozes class. Moreover, the heavy extraction and strong torrefaction notes that marked previous vintages of the recent past have been replaced by beautifully precise, vibrant fruit. Tour Saint Christophe is one of best values in Saint-Émilion. I haven't always loved Tour Saint Christoph, but I love the 2018. It's a fabulous effort from Technical Director Jérôme Aguirre and his team. Don't miss it.
