"This incredibly fragrant and elegant wine is from our cooler site in Bannockburn in a warmer growing season resulting in a highly energetic wine with great flow and incredible layers of red and black fruit, baking spice and earth. The aromas are both intriguing and complex: fresh berry, lilac, baking spice and wild thyme. The palate is long and bright with cherry, raspberry, beautiful florals and cardamom. Silky fine tannins compliment the vibrant acidity, giving the wine length and memory. This wine is drinking beautifully at release and will continue to do so for at least a decade." Sweeter smelling than either the Gibbston or Waitaki bottlings—think scents of caramelized brown sugar backed by ripe black cherries—the 2019 Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir is a round, velvety example of Pinot. Medium to full-bodied, with ample concentration, richly textural tannins and a long, plush finish, it's already approachable and should drink well for at least another 5-7 years.

This delivers generous, ripe red-cherry and berry aromas with berry pastry, bergamot, fresh herbs and some nicely dialed-in oak spice. The 2018 Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir features slightly chunkier fruit than found in Valli's bottlings from cooler regions (Waitaki, Gibbston). That may actually appeal more to consumers looking for a slightly bigger, richer style of Pinot Noir. Black cherries and notes of baking spices are framed by ripe tannins and crisp acids, and there's just a suggestion of cedary oak (it was aged in 30% new French pièces). It's smooth and supple on the finish, making it approachable now, yet it should age well for a decade or so..

The fullest-bodied Valli Pinot (from the warmest subregion), the 2018 Bendigo Vineyard Pinot Noir boasts ebullient black cherry and blackberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with hints of cocoa, clove and a bit of dusty-rose character, it's big but not lacking elegance or complexity, finishing with silky tannins and admirable length.

Valli Pinot Noir Gibbston Vineyard 2019 Central Otago

Ein klassischer Gibbston Pinot Noir - Jahrgang,

sagt Winemakerin Jen Parr über 2019er. "Schimmerndes Granatrot mit fesselnden Aromen von frischen Kräutern (Wermut, Rosmarin und wilder Thymian), die aus dem Glas "springen" und von Feigen, Kirschen und getrockneten Rosenblättern ergänzt werden. Am Gaumen beginnt er würzig mit köstlichen getrockneten Kräutern, Dukkah und Pilzen, die in leuchtende rote Früchte übergehen, mit einem langen und würzigen Abgang. Der Wein hat eine seidige Textur mit feinen Tanninen und exquisiten Details. "

Der 1998 erworbene und in den Jahren 1999-2000 bepflanzte Valli-Weinberg in Gibbston ist mit 4050 Rebstöcken/ha bepflanzt und mit nur 1 kg pro Rebstock bepflanzt, um eine perfekte Reife zu gewährleisten. Es ist der erste Weinberg im Tal, der in der richtigen Nord-Süd-Richtung gepflanzt wurde. Dadurch wird die Anzahl der Sonnenstunden, die die Reben erhalten, maximiert, was wesentlich zur gleichmäßigen Reifung der Früchte beiträgt, einem entscheidenden Faktor für die Qualität des Pinot Noir. Die Böden des Weinbergs bestehen hauptsächlich aus Schiefer und aus alluvialem Löss. Der Oberboden ist zwischen 0,5 und 1 m tief und liegt auf frei abfließendem Kies, der den Wurzeln der Reben einen leichten Zugang zu Wasser und Nährstoffen ermöglicht. Gibbston, eine der kühlsten Unterregionen von Otago, hat eine der langsamsten Reifezeiten. Ein Schlüsselfaktor für die Qualität des Pinot Noir aus einem so kühlen Gebiet ist die lange Reifezeit, d. h. die Zeit, die die Trauben am Rebstock verbringen, damit sie Eleganz und Komplexität des Geschmacks entwickeln können.

The medium to full-bodied 2019 Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir (from the winery's home vineyard) is again a top performer. Complex aromas of pencil shavings, wild herbs, root vegetables and Bing cherries all make appearances, while the tannins are exquisitely balanced and supple, the fruit concentrated and ripe, and the finish long and mouthwatering. Expect this beauty to drink well for a decade, perhaps even longer.

Auch die rennomierte Sommelière und Central Otago-Kennerin Candice Chow zeigt sich sehr angetan vom 2019er Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir von Valli. "Moderates, homogenes Rubinrot, etwas heller am Rand. Elegantes, volles Bukett, Nuancen von roten Kirschen, Erdbeeren, umrankt von süßem Basilikum, Thymian, gefolgt von Rosenblättern und Wild mit einer pikanten Note. Mittlerer Körper, Aromen von roten Kirschen, Erdbeeren mit einem Hauch von Sauerkirschen, gefolgt von krautigem Thymian, süßem Basilikum und roter Lakritze. Die florale Präsenz findet ihren Weg zwischen Wild und erdiger Würze. Zimt, Muskatnuss und Frucht verbleiben bis zu einem langen, geschmeidigen Abgang. Das staubige Tannin hat eine zähe Textur und gibt der lebendigen Säure einen gewissen Halt. Smoky, meaty notes from the 30% new Mercurey barrels accent the nose of the 2018 Waitaki Vineyard Pinot Noir, but it's by no means one-dimensional. It also offers up hints of roses, cherries and clove. Medium-bodied, silky and elegant on the palate, it lingers teasingly on the finish, alternating between fruity and savory characters, both wrapped around a graphite-laced backbone.
