"This incredibly fragrant and elegant wine is from our cooler site in Bannockburn in a warmer growing season resulting in a highly energetic wine with great flow and incredible layers of red and black fruit, baking spice and earth. The aromas are both intriguing and complex: fresh berry, lilac, baking spice and wild thyme. The palate is long and bright with cherry, raspberry, beautiful florals and cardamom. Silky fine tannins compliment the vibrant acidity, giving the wine length and memory. This wine is drinking beautifully at release and will continue to do so for at least a decade." Sweeter smelling than either the Gibbston or Waitaki bottlings—think scents of caramelized brown sugar backed by ripe black cherries—the 2019 Bannockburn Vineyard Pinot Noir is a round, velvety example of Pinot. Medium to full-bodied, with ample concentration, richly textural tannins and a long, plush finish, it's already approachable and should drink well for at least another 5-7 years.

This delivers generous, ripe red-cherry and berry aromas with berry pastry, bergamot, fresh herbs and some nicely dialed-in oak spice. The palate has swirling, fleshy cherry and peach flavors, carried in nicely pitched tannins and delivered into a fresh, juicy and open-knit finish. Seamless. Drink now. Screw cap.

"Bright garnet hue with vivid fruit aromas of wild strawberry, morello cherry, and plum married with sage, wild thyme, rose petal and a hint of cedar. The vibrant fruit, floral notes and savoury spice layer wonderfully with silky tannins and creamy texture highlighted by a fresh acidity that gives the wine tremendous energy. The warmer growing season resulted in a solid fruit set and an early start to harvest with all clones delivering brilliant, healthy clusters. Wild red fruit, intense fragrance and electric energy are the hallmarks of Waitaki Pinot Noir and this vintage is no exception, delivering a notably concentrated wine with plenty of cellaring potential." Smoky, meaty notes from the 30% new Mercurey barrels accent the nose of the 2018 Waitaki Vineyard Pinot Noir, but it's by no means one-dimensional. It also offers up hints of roses, cherries and clove. Medium-bodied, silky and elegant on the palate, it lingers teasingly on the finish, alternating between fruity and savory characters, both wrapped around a graphite-laced backbone.

This cooler area, in a warmer vintage, has worked a treat with this taut, focused and compact pinot. Fresh red cherries and sappy allure on the nose, moving to a palate that has almost chalky, compact tannins and a very succulent and detailed, fresh finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
