Australien

Weinland Australien:

Deep crimson-purple; uses the Amarone technique pioneered by Joe Grilli in Australia, with 20% of the grapes air-dried for eight weeks before being crushed; it worked for him and does here, adding a dimension of richness to the blackcurrant fruit, and creating a velvety texture.

Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2010 Mc Laren Vale

Estate-grown, with a miserable yield of half a tonne to the acre thanks to the vintage, yet still $19.99 - I shudder to think of the cost of production. As ever, a flawless wine, with clear varietal character, and none of the muscle-bound character one might expect from such a yield.

Teusner The Independent 2016 Shiraz Mataro Barossa Valley
Weinbeschreibung:

White melon, white peach, brown bread (lightly toasted), almonds, cedar and spice. Has a juicy orchard fruit flavour – almost pear – plenty of racy citrus, lemon barley, and spice. Very long with a little touch up of grippy texture to close. Complex wine. Looked more settled and complete after being open for day, though curious to say, it also tightened up and felt more controlled. Sterling release. Needs to be left alone for a few years.

“I finally made the pilgrimage to Hoddles Creek in August last year. Franco D’Anna drove me around the vineyards and I got a feel for the block sitting at the top of the hill which produces the fruit for the 1er Chardonnay. As always, this is a significant step up from the very good Estate wine. On a purely intuitive level it does make some sense when you visit. A few years in a cool, dark place and this will be singing. White flowers, peach and nectarine with a spine of ruby grapefruit. Toasty oak and spice are perfectly positioned with regard to both texture and flavour. Further interest via almonds, cashews and campfire clothes. Wonderful intensity and tremendous extension.

How good is Australian Pinot Noir getting these days? Bright raspberry/cherry, spices, slight pepperiness and something like pencil/mineral or whatever-you-want-to-call-it-but-it’s-there. Light bodied, flush tannin, silky almost, then firm and long. Has depth for a feather weight. It’s pretty and delicate and absolutely needs time in bottle or a big decant if drinking now. After being open for a day, it really began to sing, then I finished the bottle so can’t tell you what happened next. Go forth, Pinot Fanciers.”

Jeremy Pringle
94+/100 Punkte
A more feminine and perfumed Hoddles Creek 1er Pinot Noir than the previous 2010 release but every bit as good. 20% whole bunches, eighteen months in barrel. Roses, raspberries, smoked meats, sour cherry and black spice. It’s highly structured and needs a thorough decant if you’re going to get stuck in now but its future is assured. Lively acid and layered tannin that works its way through the flavours as it heads towards a stony, slightly herbal, sappy and savoury finish. Only just medium-bodied at most however it has unwavering intensity and very good reach.”

Tolpuddle 2015 Chardonnay by Shaw and Smith

JamesSuckling.com - Top 100 Wines of Australia - January 2017

An extraordinary wine from one of the most perfect growing seasons, this has seen 100% malolactic fermentation, and the way in which the acidity is set into the wine is stunning. The nose has a good serving of toasty hazelnuts and spicy oak, but the bright grapefruit and white-peach fruits take centre stage. Flinty and complex. The palate is cast around a central core of intense, commanding acidity, while peach-custard and lemon-curd flavors hold super long. The acidity pins the finish in place. Stunning concentration and balance. Elegant and powerful. Drink on release in 2017 and for 5+ years.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Plexus (a Shiraz, Grenache. Mourvèdre blend) is a little youthfully reticent, offering glimpses at black raspberry and mulberry aromas plus licorice, cracked black pepper, earth and lavender. Medium to full-bodied and still very primary in the mouth, it has a great intensity of red and black fruit flavors supported by ripe, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.

Herkunft:

Shiraz 47%, Grenache 32%, Mourvedre 21%. The Shiraz was sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Marananga and Ebenezer regions, Grenache from the Tanunda and Krondorf regions and Mourvèdre from the Light Pass and Krondorf regions.

The fourth vintage under Shaw & Smith control, this has such immediate appeal and attractive style it will be hard to see this wine making it to many cellars. The nose is super expressive with swirling spicy red cherries and boysenberry-scented pinot noir fruit. It's gently sappy, showing some herbal notes and toasty, spicy oak. The palate has intensity, depth and length; it's fleshy and supple through the middle, but the ever-so-slightly tart red-cherry flavors are mouth-wateringly fresh. The tannins are perfectly groomed, and the acidity is pitch-perfect. A great vintage: They have totally nailed it! Drink now.

This is a very attractive and deceptively powerful chardonnay from a high-altitude site (500m) and one that delivers a latent, smouldering depth on the nose. Toasty, hazelnut-like oak breathes up through flinty complexity and a wealth of white peaches, melon, limes and grapefruit. The palate's super taut, really succulent and powerful, holding this thing tight for start to finish. Electrifying tension to this wine; new heights have been reached. Shaw and Smith Balhannah Vineyard 2014 Shiraz
James Suckling 96/100
A cooler 2014 vintage has sent this into peppery, stony and spicy mode. Indeed, it's really complex and nicely layered, especially in terms of the aromatics where wild red plums meet blackberries, and the oak is nicely integrated too. The palate has impressive finesse and finely detailed tannin texture. There's some spark to it, just as peppery cherries, raspberries and blackberries hold fresh and lively. A wine that speaks of purity and place, and one that's pared back and focused. Drink now to 2025+.

Wissenswertes über den Weinberg Balhannah:

Vineyards

This is the first release of this wine. Fruit was sourced from close-planted low yielding vines at Shaw + Smith's Balhannah Vineyard in the central Adelaide Hills, planted in 2005. The distinctive site has always shown potential for a single site wine, and in this particular year the fruit was outstanding. It has a north-facing aspect and the soils are loam over clay, ironstone, quartzite and shale. Low yields are achieved by aggressive pruning and pre-harvest bunch thinning.

Sangreal by Farr Pinot Noir 2013 Victoria-Australia
James Halliday, 97/100

“The vineyard was planted in '94 to clones 114 and 115, believed to have mutated into a single 'Sangreal' clone. Always made with 50-70% whole bunches, and 60-70% new oak maturation for 18 months. Another very different iteration of pinot, the multifaceted bouquet with both red and black fruits in play, the same perfumed vehicle as Farr Rising, the palate of remarkable elegance and finesse, with exactly the right balance between pure pinot fruit flavours and structure ex the whole bunches.” (James Halliday, 97/100)

Wine Front, 96/100

“Twenty-ish year old vines. A healthy dose of whole bunches. Astute winemaking. One of the stars of Australian wine. Opens tight. Dry tannin, controlling, lots of it, no escape. It would be an issue if the fruit wasn’t so good. Said fruit comes at you in waves: charcuterie, fistfuls of spice, sour cherries, earth and ash. It’s quite a parade to step into. A river of nuance to be swept along by. I sat on this over the course of three days, more by accident than by intention, and it drank exquisitely throughout.” (Wine Front, 96/100)

Huon Hooke, 96/100

“Full red colour with a hint of purple in the rim; restrained but very appealing bouquet of red fruits, spices and dried herbs. It's rich and fruit-sweet on the palate, with quite high acidity adding zest and verve to the mouthfeel. This has a bit more whole-bunch character than the Farrside. Very long finish, a touch firmer in structure than the '13 Farrside, with a little more acid.” (Huon Hooke, 96/100)

Farrside by Farr Pinot Noir 2013 Victoria-Australia
Huon Hooke, 97/100

“Full red colour with a tinge of purple; the bouquet sweetly ripe red fruits without excessive stalky herbal notes. Very perfumed, alluring, complex. The wine is very rich and fruit-sweet on the tongue, full-bodied and intense, powerful and very long in its aftertaste. A superb, delicious wine; brandied cherries; good soft and fleshy tannins and a tremendously long, satisfying finish. Great pinot.” (Huon Hooke, 97/100)

Wine Front, 96/100

“This is a beauty. Seduction plus. Certified yum. Swish oak, spiced cherry-plum, exquisite integration of various savoury nuances and length to burn. It’s rich and generous but firm and complex. Its smoky, slinky, satiny mouthfeel is to die for. For sheer top-end drinkability; it’s sensational.” (Wine Front, 96/100)

James Halliday, 96/100

“From clones 114, 115, 667 and MV6; hand-picked and sorted, 60-70% destemmed before a 4-day cold soak, wild ferment for 12 days, pigeaged 2-3 times daily, matured for 18 months in French oak (50-60% new). Significantly more powerful and intense than its Farr Rising sibling. This is the big dog of the trio, with everything needed for a 20-year future.” (James Halliday, 96/100)

Shaw and Smith Balhannah Vineyard 2013 Shiraz
James Halliday, 96/100

“70% whole bunch and matured in 500l French puncheons. Inaugural release from a vineyard planted to 550 vines per hectare. It's an exotic wine, developing slowly. Truffles, cloves, olives and saltbush on a bed of dark cherry-plum fruit. Tannin: ultra fine. Length: to burn. It's complex already but new worlds of aroma/flavour will open up given time.” (James Halliday, 96/100)

Wine Front, 95/100

“First release of a Balhannah single vineyard shiraz for Shaw + Smith. It’s from a low-yielding vineyard planted to 5500 vines per hectare. It was mostly whole bunch fermented and then aged in 500 litre French puncheons. It’s had 14 months in bottle prior to release. Only 292 dozen were made. It doesn’t blow you away but then it’s not meant to. It’s smoky and reductive with clove and olive notes laced to a hub of dark, brooding black cherry. It’s flecked with twiggy dried herb and spice, perhaps the odd saltbush notes passing casually by. It’s a concentrated wine without being an overblown one; its class in many ways rests in the way it parades savouriness seamlessly though the mouth, and churns ultra-fine tannin from a long way back in the palate. Quality? No real question about it.” (Wine Front, 95/100)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Amon-Ra Shiraz has a youthfully mute nose, offering glimpses at the blackberry, blackcurrant and licorice core, plus suggestions of dark chocolate, cigar boxes, fertile earth and baking spices. The full-bodied palate delivers concentrated, muscular blackberry and earth flavors with plenty of freshness and a beautiful backbone of finely grained tannins, finishing with commendable persistence and layers. This is a great contender for wine of the vintage!

Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz 2013 Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Amon Ra has youthfully toned-down notes of blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, plums and cracked pepper with nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and black earth. The palate has wonderful balance and elegance for its commendable concentration and fullness, with tons of muscular fruit and spice layers framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with great persistence.

Magnificent totally impenetrable inky black core with a very deep dark purple black hue. Perfumed aromatics of liquorice, ripe blackberries and subtle dark chocolates emanate from the glass followed by dark plum, vanillin cedar and spice. Expansive and lavish the palate possesses beautiful fruit purity and outstanding concentration delivering a very rich flavour profile of ripe blackberries, liquorice and dar
k plum followed by some dark chocolate, vanillin cedar, faint earth and spice. Velvety but structural tannins. Exceptional power with a very long conclusion of ripe blackberries, liquorice, dark plums, subtle dark chocolate, lightly toasted vanillin cedar and spice.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2011 Amon-Ra shows off very spicy, peppery aromas over black fruit, anise and violets but is a bit closed beyond that. Perfumed and elegant on the palate, it is a very fresh, medium to full-bodied style of wine with just enough fruit to balance the medium-firm grainy tannins, crisp acidity and the long finish. Deep crimson-purple, exceptional for the vintage; a courageous decision to leave the grapes on the vine and profit from the much-improved weather in April has resulted in a voluptuously plush wine, the only chink in its armour is the finish, which does point to the alcohol.

Cullen Chardonnay 2014 Kevin John Margaret River
96+ Parker Punkte für 2013
Lisa Perotti Brown bewertet den Cullen Chardonnay Kevin John im Aug. 2012

Gorgeous struck-match and savory, yeasty notes over a core of grapefruit, peaches, marmite, cashews, orange blossoms and ginger lead the 2013 Chardonnay Kevin John. This Chardonnay is a richer, concentrated style with layers of flavor and a wonderfully creamy texture. It has a very long finish.

Vanya Cullen has so many new and exciting projects going on at her winery, I could have happily spent a week or more in her sagely company instead of my requisite three hours. 100% Biodynamic since 2004, Vanya makes no secret of her passion for purity and sustainability. Readers will note that I refrained from using the term "natural" here as this has sadly become something of a dirty word of late and it would be wrong for anyone to unassumingly tar this conscientious winery at the pinnacle of quality with the same brush. This said, Vanya has created a brand new orange wine (as in a white wine produced from extended skin maceration to such an extent that the phenolics oxidize, producing an orange color). I don't say this about many orange wines but "Amber" is very good indeed and well worth checking out. Vanya has also produced Fruit and Flower day harvested barrels of the 2014 "Legacy Series" Kevin John Chardonnay, which yield some evocative and, dare I say, pretty convincing differences for all the biodynamic unbelievers (see my tasting notes). Interestingly, Cullen Wines even uses biodynamic barrels, which means the wood is harvested only on fruit and flower days. When I raised my eyebrows about this, Vanya insisted that Tonnelierie Bordelais produce a certificate of authenticity for these barrels. Hmmm. Anyway, back to what's in the glass, the other major vinous treat for me was a preview of the new "Vanya" Cabernet Sauvignon label, which pushes the already high Margaret River Cabernet bar up just that much higher.

97 Punkte James Hallidays Winecompanien 2013:

Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, and wild-yeast-fermented in two-thirds new French barriques, one-third one-year-old, before spending a further five months in those barrels. The colour shows some development, and the bouquet and palate are appropriately complex. The texture and mouthfeel are supple and round, the white peach, cashew and fig flavours coursing in an unbroken stream through to the finish and aftertaste. The length of the finish is prodigious.

Lisa Perrotti Brown 28 Oktober 2016:

This 2013 Shiraz St Henri follows in the blockbuster footsteps of the 2010 and 2012. The blend is 96% Shiraz with 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and the fruit sources are far and wide, including a real mix of terroirs: McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Padthaway and Port Lincoln. It spent 12 months in 50+-year-old casks. Deep garnet-purple colored, the youthfully reticent nose is complex, offering loam, aged meat, licorice, tar, scorched earth, fenugreek and cloves over a cherry cordial, blueberry pie and dried mulberries core. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals lovely, understated elegance and depth with a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and many fruit and spice layers emerging on the finish. This is one for the long-long haul and, at a fraction of the price of Grange, should be where the smart money goes for stocking the cellar.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown 28 Oktober 2016:
The 2012 Grange comes from just two sub-regions of South Australia this year: Barossa Valley (the majority) and McLaren Vale. This makes a lot of sense since 2012 was a cracking year in both of these areas, producing a number of extraordinary wines. As usual, this Grange contains a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, just 2%. Very deep purple-black in color, it opens on the nose with complex earthy/meaty/savory notes, soon giving way to baked blackberries, plum preserves, hoisin and Chinese five spice with dabs of sandalwood, licorice, menthol and vanilla. The palate reveals a surprisingly open, rich, full-bodied expression exuding a powerhouse of velvet-lined decadence. Still, it characteristically possesses that rock-solid “Grange” backbone of firm tannins and great freshness expressed in a real lively lift to the finish. And the finish is epically long. There are some stylistic similarities here to the opulent, gregarious 2008 vintage, perhaps just lacking ever so slightly in the same exhilarating abandonment of winemaking protocols for the celebration of the fruit and sites. That said, this is unquestionably a stonking great Grange!

Penfolds Grange 2010 BIN 95 Shiraz South Australia
100 Punkte James Suckling
9. Oktober 2014 James Suckling

The 2010 Grange arrives with much expectation and does not disappoint. This is a powerhouse, structurally superior to both the 2009 and 2008 vintages and breathtakingly dense, long and precise. The nose has cola, blackberry, vanillin, hard brown spices of all kinds, coal smoke, meaty charcuterie elements and a strong tarry, savory note that speaks of the 85% Barossa Valley componentry. The palate has super deep tannins that fan out through flavorsome black fruits. These are purposeful tannins; they bristle on the palate, tantalizing and assertive yet playful, strong not aggressive. The power here is the thing; this has mouth-coating density and terrific drive, so tightly coiled, it gives enough away to suggest a very, very long cellaring wine is here. This is a classic Grange that will please the serious collectors. A wine of genuine pedigree. Better in 2026.

99 Punkte James Halliday
Oktober 2014
The core of this wine is Barossa Valley Shiraz (85%) the remaining 15% shiraz (and 4% cabernet sauvignon) from the Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate. In time honoured fashion, it finished its fermentation in 100% new American oak hogsheads, where it spent the next 17 months. It has exceptional hue and depth to the colour; the smoky complexity to the black fruits (no red or blue) of the bouquet also offers licorice and earth aromas; only a great Burgundy could have more nuances defined each time you revert to the bouquet. You could lose yourself, Narcissus-like, looking endlessly into the reflection of the palate; for all its power, there is not a hair out of place, the tannins outstanding. There is not the slightest question this will be one of the greatest Granges in the pantheon of '52, '55, '71, '96 and '06.

99 Parker Punkte

Oktober 2014 Lisa Perrotti Brown

The 2010 Grange is a 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 96% Shiraz blend made from Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate fruit that was aged 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Very deep purple-black in color, this is classic Grange - amongst the finest produced - replete with fresh, vibrant and youthful black fruit notes showing some blueberry aromas and accents of camphor, anise and the slightest floral hint plus a whiff of oak in the background to lend a cedar-laced lift to this textbook Shiraz nose. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it is very taut and finely constructed showing typically firm, grainy, uniform tannins, great concentration and wonderful persistence on the finish. If I have any very slight complaint of this near perfect wine it is that it seems a little too clinical and appears to speak less of the land and the heart of South Australia and more of the very skilled winemaking than did the Grange from the magical 2008 vintage.
