Der Tyrrells Wines Hunter Valley Shiraz 2021 wird aus Trauben von bis zu 40 Jahre alten Reben gekeltert. Die Gärung findet in traditionellen, offenen Holzfudern statt. die Reifung verbringt der Tyrrells Wines Hunter Valley Shiraz in alten gebrauchten 2700-Liter Holzfässern aus Französischer Eiche. So bleibt die Primärfrucht der Hauptakteur. Die Nase präsentiert sich würzig und rotfruchtig, am Gaumen leichte Extraktsüße mit animierender Struktur. Geschmeidges Tannin. Kraftvoll, komplex - großes Kino in dieser Preisklasse!

The 2021 Hunter Valley Shiraz is very reductive upon opening, but it works its way out of the glass with some swirling. Beneath it, there is black pepper, pink peppercorns, plenty of fresh, spicy acidity, sumac, iodine, poached strawberries and star anise. There's a nettle-y quality to the acidity that I find quite pleasant, but I think really what the wine needs is some air. If you can give it some—either in your glass or a decanter—I believe the wine will be even more enjoyable. It has lovely fruit but is frisky as all get up for now. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The 2018 vintage has a concentrated core of red berry fruits including raspberries and cherries. It is vibrant and more opulent than other years.

Outstanding quality from a growing season that threatened, at times, to be tricky. After some heat in January. the moderate. dry and sunny months of February and March delivered beautifully balanced fruit. Crop levels were slightly below average, enhancing flavour and intensity.

Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of varieties and remains a challenge for site, season and winemaking - Shaw + Smith has joined the quest albeit in a ‘small batch’ way. First produced experimentally in 2004 and commercially in 2007. Site selection, the right clonal mix, minuscule yields and fastidious vineyard management are essential to success.

Das Traubengut stammt fast ausschließlich aus der Lage HDV, die sich zwischen zwei trockene Täler bettet und so optimale Bedingungen birgt. Die Trauben werden in Ganzpressung verarbeitet und nach der temperaturregulierten Vergärung im Stahltank und einer kurzen Reifezeit auf der Feinhefe geht es für den Tyrrells Wines Hunter Valley Semillon auch schon in die Flasche - hier wird ganz explizit auf den Einsatz von Holz verzichtet, um die Frische best möglich zu bewahren. Die Zitrusfrische zeigt sich schon in der Nase. Am Gaumen gepaart mit saftiger Grapefruit. Die sanfte Säure stützt die Frucht und gibt perfekte Balance. Was für ein Einstieg!

The opening act to a wonderful suite. Mostly HVD sourcing. Riffs on lemon grass, lime drop, pistachio husk, spa salts and nettle. Light-weighted and effusive of freshness. A little more open-knit and herbaceous, pungent and bright, than the more reticent wines of the upper tier. All the better for breaching earlier. A drape of subtle sweetness across the finish. Tyrrells Wines 2021 Vat 47 Chardonnay Hunter Valley

Die Trauben für Tyrrells Wines Chardonnay Vat 47 Hunter Valley stammen ausschließlich vom trockenen Weinberg Short Flat, wo Murray Tyrrell 1968 die ersten Chardonnay-Reben pflanzte. Alle Früchte werden von Hand gepflückt und sofort korbgepresst. Der Saft wird dann zwei Tage lang kalt gelagert, bevor er in einen weiteren Edelstahltank umgefüllt wird, um die Gärung einzuleiten. Anschließend wird er in Barriques aus französischer Eiche umgefüllt, um die Gärung und Reifung abzuschließen. Das Bouquet ist delikat, zeigt weißes Steinobst und schöne florale Noten mit nur einem Hauch von Eiche. Am Gaumen zeigt sich die Kraft des Short Flat Weinbergs mit einer Intensität und Länge, die man bei anderen Chardonnays nicht oft findet. Die Ausgewogenheit zwischen den primären Fruchtcharakteren, einigen sekundären Hefekomponenten und der feinkörnigen französischen Eiche ist jetzt schon wunderbar, wird aber mit zunehmender Reife noch schöner.

The 2021 Vat 47 Chardonnay is sourced from vines planted in the HVD (Hunter Valley Distilling) vineyard by Murray Tyrrell in 1968. (Chardonnay plantings went through a significant boom in Australia at around this time. Early cuttings of Old Foundation Block [UC Davis] clone was first planted in the Swan Research Station vineyard in 1957 and was released for sale in 1964 (later planted up at Gingin, hence the current name), with Tyrrell's in 1968. In 1969, the I10v1 clone arrived in Victoria and was widely planted. These early movements gave way to a proper planting boom in the 1970s, and by 1980, "Australian Chardonnay" in all its (rather unfortunate) 1980s stylistic excess was in full swing.) Back to this wine. Tightly wound and showing the cool balance of the 2021 vintage to great effect, this has curried mango, white peach, saltbush and brine mingling on the nose, while the palate gives way to a glassy polish and juicy acid line in the mouth. It's a super impressive wine, all the more so given I recently tasted a 2013, which seemed to have not aged a day. Not one single day. Timeless. A conservative score with a "plus," knowing there is much room to move (upward).

Hinweise zur Weinherstellung: Der Clare Valley Shiraz wurde eine Woche lang mit den Schalen unter sanftem Umpumpen vergoren und dann sanft gepresst, um harte, austrocknende Tannine zu vermeiden. Der Wein wurde dann 24 Monate lang in vorwiegend amerikanischer Eiche ausgebaut, bevor er geklärt, filtriert und abgefüllt wurde.

The medium-bodied palate is delineated with a fine bead of acidity and grainy tannins, although the oak seems to dominate on the finish and lends a dark chocolate smear that detracts from its precision (also one of its attributes in barrel). I hope that will be assimilated with time.

Australische Rieslinge. Ja ja, diese plumpen Fruchtbomben. Viel zu viel Extrakt. Dachte man lange. Dann kam Grosset. Und zeigte allen, was Riesling aus Australien kann, wenn man ihn an den richtigen Stellen und auf den richtigen Böden pflanzt. Wie 1996 am Polish Hill. Hier gedeiht seit dem das Rebmaterial für den Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley 2022. Vollreif geerntet, von Hand gelesen, komplett durchgegoren und trotzdem nur schlanke 12.9% Alkohol. Ein wahres Feuerwerk an Zitrusaromen, Mineralik und ein Fest für jeden Riesling-Fan. Egal woher man kommt. Die Weine von Grosset sprengen Grenzen.
Dabei hat der Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley 2022 "die Struktur und die Intensität des Geschmacks, um einer der großen Jahrgänge zu werden". Heisst es aus dem kleinen Städtchen Auburn am südlichen Rand des Clare Valley. Der Heimat von Grosset.

Bests Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Great Western 2019

Der Sugarloaf Creek Weinberg liegt 10 km Luftlinie südwestlich vom Hauptweinberg von Bests Wines, dem Concongella. Anfang der 1990er Jahre wurde er erstmals bepflanzt und umfasst 114 Hektar Rebfläche, auf denen überwiegend Shiraz, aber auch Cabernet und eine kleine Parzelle Merlot angebaut werden. In den unteren Lagen überwiegen leichte Sandböden, bergauf geht der Boden in reichhaltige rote Böden über, und am höchsten Punkt besteht er aus einer Mischung aus roten Böden und Schiefer. Dieser Weinberg wurde 2019 von Bests Wines erworben und liefert unter anderem die Trauben für den Bests Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Great Western 2019.

Der Wine Spectator vergibt im Dezember 2021 89 Punkte: "Balanced berry and plum flavors show notes of herb and tobacco, with a savory thread running through the center. Ends with plenty of toasty wood notes on the finish. Drink now. 8.000 cases made, 650 cases imported."
