The 2016 Malescot Saint Exupéry is fabulous. Powerful and explosive on the palate. the 2016 offers serious intensity. but it also appears to be holding back quite a bit of its potential. Moreover. what impresses me most is that in 2016. intensity is delivered more with finesse than with the brutish power that is such a signature of Malescot. Deep and resonant. but also remarkably polished. the 2016 Malescot is a winner. Hints of iron. smoke. cedar. tobacco and scorched earth add nuance. but it is the wine's sense of poise that is most remarkable. I loved it. Tasted three times.

The 2016 Malescot-St-Exupery has an opulent. lavish and pure bouquet with billowing black cherry and blueberry fruit. a touch of mint and graphite emerging with time. I love the delineation to this Margaux. The palate is very well balanced. sensual and voluptuous in style. but that does not detract from the fine structure here and the precision towards the finish. Everything seems to be in its right place here; it is one of the best Malescot-St-Exupery that I have tasted and it is wonderful.

This is a superb wine. I didn’t think it could be better than the 2015 but indeed it is. Full. layered and sexy. It goes on for minutes with dense fruit. yet it’s also vivid and showcases sublime tannins and acidity balance. Great finish.

6 Dec, 2021 – A ripe and layered red with lots of currant and chocolate character, as well as some walnut and cocoa powder. Crushed stones, too. It’s full and layered with round tannins and a juicy and plush texture. Crushed velvet that turns to silk. Very cool and long. Plenty going on here. Give it three to four years to come together. But will age beautifully for years to come. A blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot. Try after 2026.

The 2019 Giscours has certainly calmed down since its bravura performance from barrel, now more streamlined and focused, albeit retaining that black and blue fruit interlaced with pressed violet. The harmonious palate is very finely tuned and beautifully structured, with a touch of salinity. This is one of the more precise Giscours in recent years, perhaps partly due to consultant Thomas Duclos, who began working with the estate in 2018 (he was actually born nearby). This reminds me of some of the classic Giscours such as the 1966 or the 1970. It may even merit a higher score with bottle age.

The 2019 Giscours has turned out very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, burning embers, lilac and violets framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's polished and perfumed, with a velvety, seamless profile and bright animating acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Alexandre Van Beek and his team are taking this estate to heights it hasn't hit since the 1970s, and this is another of the great bargains of the 2019 en primeur campaign.

The 2019 Cantenac Brown is a brilliant wine from José Sanfins and his team. Given its quality, this remains somewhat under the radar and is well worth a special effort to seek out.

The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with sappy red fruit, fine acidity and a vibrant, harmonious finish. Derived exclusively from the château's holdings on the deep gravel soils of the plateau of Brane, the 2019 Brane-Cantenac has turned out brilliantly and merits a special effort to seek out. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, pencil shavings, violets, sweet loamy soil and cardamon, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a beautifully seamless, perfumed profile. Retaining all the estate's signature elegance but with an extra dimension of depth and intensity, it's the finest Brane-Cantenac of the modern era and one of the great successes of the 2019 vintage.

The 2019 Brane-Cantenac is wild and exotic from the very first taste. The aromatics alone are dazzling. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, tobacco, new leather, menthol and cinnamon are all kicked up in this flamboyant Margaux. The 2019 is radiant and generous, yet also retains a very classic sense of structure. The precision here is just unreal. In 2019, Brane-Cantenac is an absolute head-turner. It is the sort of wine that abounds in Bordeaux, a wine that offers tremendous quality and relative value.

The 2019 Brane-Cantenac, which was bottled at the beginning of July 2021, takes time to open in the glass. As I mentioned in my tasting note from barrel, this vintage was matured entirely in new oak from several cooperages and inevitably the wood is still present aromatically, though it is completely simpatico with the fruit concentration that the growing season bestowed. (Previously the Grand Vin saw 70%–80% new oak.) The intense bouquet features blackberry, crushed rock, touches of crushed flowers and a hint of lavender. The palate is beautifully balanced with layers of red berry fruit, orange peel, cedar and just a touch of graphite. As I said in my previous assessment, it does not set out to be a powerful Brane-Cantenac, which means that it retains a fine elegance toward the finish and a touch of white pepper mixed with clove on the aftertaste. (Still) excellent. 14.1% alcohol

Medium to full-bodied, seamless and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is a sensual, elegant Rauzan-Ségla from Nicolas Audebert and his team.

The Grand Vin 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla is beautiful, and it seems this estate can do no wrong since 2015. Haute couture at its finest and seamless, medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and just stunning any way you look at it, it already offers pleasure today yet will easily have 30 years of prime drinking.

Sweet dark cherry, plum, licorice spice and a touch of new oak are laced into the vibrant, persistent finish. The 2019 is a super-classic Rauzan-Ségla that will thrill those who can wait. The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that I did not taste en primeur. Picked from September 12 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak, it has a gorgeous, seductive bouquet of pure blackberry, bilberry, crushed iris petals and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

The black fruits burrow downwards through the palate at first. keeping things pretty closed. everything holding its breath. before the fruit opens. There is the precision of Rauzan Ségla that is reminiscent of the 2016. less of the immediate voluptuous impact of 2018 but the density becomes extremely clear in the glass. A serious Rauzan. cassis and cedar. still with a rinse of iris flowers to give it the Margaux touch. 3.73pH. 50/50 1st and 2nd wine. A yield of 42l/ha.

11 Nov, 2021 – So much sweet tobacco, stone, brambleberry and currant on the nose. The palate is full and compact with very polished tannins, yet they are solid and sturdy and run the length and width of the wine. Energetic acidity. Very structured and powerful, yet agile and impressive. Historic feel. From biodynamically grown grapes. This needs at least six years of bottle age to soften. Try after 2027.

The 2019 Palmer is a truly special wine, but it is also going to need a number of years to be at its finest. Dense and plush, with explosive energy, the 2019 possesses tremendous richness in its dark fruit. As always, the blend features a high percentage of Merlot (43%) which works so well in complementing the savoriness of the Cabernet. Thomas Duroux and his team fashioned another absolutely compelling Palmer in 2019.

The 2019 Palmer was always going to be stylistically a completely different kettle of fish than the preceding vintage. It was bottled in early August 2021. As winemaker Thomas Duroux foretold, it’s a much more classically styled Palmer, offering blackberry, briary and pressed iris petals scents rather than violet, along with a distinct marine influence; a touch of sea spray comes through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, tightly knit on the entry, and very fresh and saline, with just a very slight bitter edginess toward the almost Côte de Nuits–like finish (especially returning to my glass after 20 minutes). Quintessential Palmer, this will require 4–6 years in bottle.

The 2019 Palmer is a rich, dramatic wine that soars from the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries and berry fruit liqueur mingled with notions of violets, rose petals and sweet spices. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's powerful and immensely concentrated, with an enveloping core of lively fruit that largely conceals the wine's ripe, powdery structuring tannins. Concluding with a long, penetrating finish, it's a brilliant rendition of the contemporary Palmer style from Thomas Duroux and his team.

The 2019 Dufort Vivens is a brilliant Margaux, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, licorice, sweet soil tones, spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit, rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity, it concludes with a long and penetrating finish. The blend is dominated by fully 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, which lends the wine immense nobility. Anyone who isn’t aware of just how good Gonzague Lurton’s wines are these days should taste a bottle.

Aromas of fresh blueberries, currants, crushed raspberries, tobacco leaves, lemon zest, cocoa and oyster shells. It’s medium-bodied with fine, precise tannins. Supple and silky with excellent freshness. One third aged in terracotta amphora. 90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% merlot. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Try from 2025.

The 2019 Durfort-Vivens has fleshed out nicely. Silky, red/purplish fruit, blood orange and pomegranate give this plush Margaux fabulous depth. Time in the glass brings out very pretty floral accents to round things out. This classy Margaux is elegant, nuanced and polished. It's a terrific effort from Gonzague Lurton.

Chateau La Fortune 2019 Margaux

Für mich ist dieser Wein eine kleine Sensation. Die Entdeckung machte ich auf einer Weinmesse, hier wo man wie ein kleines Trüffelschwein von Stand zu stand schlendert und auf eine AHA-Erlebnis im Glas lauert. Dieses Erlebnis stellte sich zum Glück beim La Fortune 2016 ein, gerade noch rechtzeitig um auch direkt eine kleine Menge des 2019 zu sichern. Der Geschmack ist für mich etwas untypisch Margaux, denn man hat in der Nase zwar diese satte dunkle Fruchtaromatik von Kirsche, Waldbeeren und auch florale Anklänge, aber was dem Weine so eine zusätzliche Komponente verleiht, ist dieser Schoko und geröstete Nüsse Touch, nicht nur in der Nase!

Auch am Gaumen spielt er seine Reize voll aus, die Fruch ist sehr schön präsent und die Tannine sind stützend, seine feingliedrige Säure vermählt sich schön mit einer steinigen Mineralität. Der Wein ist nicht überladen aber er lässt auch nichts vermissen, tolle Neuentdeckung und wir freuen uns von nun an immer auf ein paar wenige Flaschen dieses Weins, denn die Produktion ist nie sehr gross. Gerne verleihe ich diesem Wein 93 Punkte und finde das gebotenen Preis Genussverhältnis sehr ansprechend.

The 2019 du Tertre opens in the glass with aromas of sweet cassis and plums mingled with undergrowth, cedarwood, violets and subtle hints of cigar wrapper. Eine Sensation in Flaschen - Eine grosse Überraschung bei unserer Verkostung am 07.11.2018 in Zürich im Dolder Grand auf der UGCB Verkostung des Jahrgangs 2016. Chateau Durfort Vivens 2016 Margaux, mann könnte es mit der Liebe auf den ersten Schluck beschreiben. Die bis dato höchste Intensität des Cabernet in diesem Wein, 94% purer Cabernet und deren wolllüstige Cassisfrucht die einem geradeaus ins Gesicht springt. Dann im Mund fängt der Wein an zu rocken, er ist wild und ungestüm und dennoch hat er eine so tolle Balance, man ist schier sprachlos. Wie geht das in so einem Wein. Der 2016er wird mir immer im Gedächtnis bleiben. Was danach folgte ist eine Elexiervariante mit dem 2018er. Diese Miniproduktion und dann gefolgt von gleich drei Traumjahren (2019,2020 UND 2021!) für diesen Wein, jeder Jahrgang einfach auf seine ganz spezielle Art und Weise eigenständig.

The 2016 Rauzan-Ségla has an intense bouquet. one of the most perfumed that I encountered during my round of tastings. Violets infuse the ebullient black fruit. and traces of pencil lead emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied. very pure and supple. displaying wonderful balance and a satiny texture that belongs in a lingerie shop. This is an utterly seductive Margaux. one of the finest in recent years as this estate continues its upsurge in quality. Few 2016s will dole out such inhibited pleasure.

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that I did not taste en primeur. Picked from September 12 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak, it has a gorgeous, seductive bouquet of pure blackberry, bilberry, crushed iris petals and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

The black fruits burrow downwards through the palate at first. keeping things pretty closed. everything holding its breath. before the fruit opens. There is the precision of Rauzan Ségla that is reminiscent of the 2016. less of the immediate voluptuous impact of 2018 but the density becomes extremely clear in the glass. A serious Rauzan. cassis and cedar. still with a rinse of iris flowers to give it the Margaux touch. 3.73pH. 50/50 1st and 2nd wine. A yield of 42l/ha.

The 2019 Malescot Saint Exupéry has a well-defined bouquet, although it does not quite possess the intensity that it showed from barrel. Touches of licorice and allspice gently unfold with time. 6 Dec, 2021 – A ripe and layered red with lots of currant and chocolate character, as well as some walnut and cocoa powder. Crushed stones, too. It’s full and layered with round tannins and a juicy and plush texture. Crushed velvet that turns to silk. Very cool and long. Plenty going on here. Give it three to four years to come together. But will age beautifully for years to come. A blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot. Try after 2026.

The 2019 Giscours has certainly calmed down since its bravura performance from barrel, now more streamlined and focused, albeit retaining that black and blue fruit interlaced with pressed violet. The harmonious palate is very finely tuned and beautifully structured, with a touch of salinity. This is one of the more precise Giscours in recent years, perhaps partly due to consultant Thomas Duclos, who began working with the estate in 2018 (he was actually born nearby). This reminds me of some of the classic Giscours such as the 1966 or the 1970. It may even merit a higher score with bottle age.

The 2019 Giscours has turned out very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, burning embers, lilac and violets framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's polished and perfumed, with a velvety, seamless profile and bright animating acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Alexandre Van Beek and his team are taking this estate to heights it hasn't hit since the 1970s, and this is another of the great bargains of the 2019 en primeur campaign.
