Sweet red cherry. plum. pomegranate. blood orange. spice and rose petal are some of the many notes that run through this absolutely exquisite wine. The 2016 is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. maybe even more! Tasted three times.

The 2016 Rauzan-Ségla is blended of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon. 30% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot aged in 60% new and 40% one-year-old barrels for 18 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored. it sings of lifted red and black cherries. black raspberries and cassis with a rose hip tea and lilacs undercurrent plus sparks of tobacco. pencil shavings and tilled earth. The palate is medium-bodied. elegant and mineral laced with firm. fine-grained tannins and beautiful freshness. finishing with great length and depth.

The 2016 Rauzan-Ségla has an intense bouquet. one of the most perfumed that I encountered during my round of tastings. Violets infuse the ebullient black fruit. and traces of pencil lead emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied. very pure and supple. displaying wonderful balance and a satiny texture that belongs in a lingerie shop. This is an utterly seductive Margaux. one of the finest in recent years as this estate continues its upsurge in quality. Few 2016s will dole out such inhibited pleasure.

The aromas of blackcurrants. sweet tobacco and sandalwood are tantalizing. Then it turns to subtle. dried fruit. Full-bodied with dense and powerful tannins. yet ending with finesse and vertical nature. Very deep. Power with finesse. Try after 2025.

The 2016 Rauzan-Segla (Rausan-Segla) is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon. 30% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot picked between 20 September and 15 October at 45 hectoliters per hectare. The wine is being aged in 60% new oak for 18 months. It has 13.2% alcohol. It has a very powerful and intense bouquet with layers of blackberry. kirsch. cedar and a touch of mint. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of fruit concentration: layers of ripe blackberry and boysenberry. segueing into what feels like a very spicy and peppery second half that seems to calm down and attain more nuance with aeration in the glass. It is a wonderful follow-up to the 2015 last year. although not quite with the same audacity and bravado. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

The 2016 Malescot Saint Exupéry is fabulous. Powerful and explosive on the palate. the 2016 offers serious intensity. but it also appears to be holding back quite a bit of its potential. Moreover. what impresses me most is that in 2016. intensity is delivered more with finesse than with the brutish power that is such a signature of Malescot. Deep and resonant. but also remarkably polished. the 2016 Malescot is a winner. Hints of iron. smoke. cedar. tobacco and scorched earth add nuance. but it is the wine's sense of poise that is most remarkable. I loved it. Tasted three times.

Medium-bodied. the palate has a firm frame of grainy tannins with fantastic energy and depth. finishing on a lingering chocolaty note.

For that reason. Rauzan-Ségla is the sort of wine that is easy to overlook. and yet all the elements of a top notch Left-Bank wine are present. Tasted three times.

Sweet dark cherry, plum, licorice spice and a touch of new oak are laced into the vibrant, persistent finish. The 2019 is a super-classic Rauzan-Ségla that will thrill those who can wait. The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that I did not taste en primeur. Picked from September 12 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak, it has a gorgeous, seductive bouquet of pure blackberry, bilberry, crushed iris petals and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

A serious Rauzan. cassis and cedar. still with a rinse of iris flowers to give it the Margaux touch. 3.73pH. 50/50 1st and 2nd wine. A yield of 42l/ha.

The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich. sumptuous and explosive in the glass. the 2015 is pure class. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous. spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit. spice. lavender. licorice and menthol all develop in the glass. but it is the wine's textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today. it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No. there is not. This is a tremendous showing.

The 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan was bottled in mid-May as usual. This was one of the wines of the vintage out of barrel. and now it has a compelling bouquet with blackberry. smoke and iris. There is wonderful delineation here. a cerebral bouquet that is quite mercurial in the glass. traces of black truffle emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and just a killer line of acidity. a Vieux Chateau Certan surfeit with energy and joie de vivre. It fans out in glorious. almost swaggering fashion with truffle and white pepper. a touch of truffle on the persistent finish. This is clearly destined to be one among the canon of legendary wines from the estate although it does deserve requisite cellaring. This is one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055.

The 2016 La Conseillante is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc aged in 70% new and 30% one-year-old French oak for 17 months. Deep garnet-purple colored. it slips provocatively out of the glass with a lifted perfume of roses. candied violets and lavender over a core of warm red and black plums. chocolate box. unsmoked cigars and baked cherries with wafts of wild thyme and tilled soil. Medium-bodied. the palate exudes polish and sophistication with bags of fragrance. freshness and energy. sporting exquisitely fine-grained tannins and finishing very long and minerally. Around 3.808 cases produced.

The 2016 La Conseillante is a brilliant wine from the team led by Technical Director Marielle Cazaux. Polished and sophisticated. the 2016 possesses stunning vertical lift. with soaring aromatics that make a strong first impression. Silky and seductive on the palate. the 2016 is all about precision and energy in the early going. It is also one of the most quite. soft-spoken Pomerols of the vintage. Hints of blackberry. lavender. licorice and spice add nuance. but in 2016 La Conseillante stands out for its sublime balance and total sense of harmony. The 2016 spent 17 months in oak. 70% new. As gorgeous as the 2016 is. my impression is that the best is yet to come. Since arriving at La Conseillante. Cazaux has changed much in the farming of the property. including introducing cover crops and limiting yields. She also now works with no sulfites in winemaking and opts for lower temperatures in fermentation. In other words. the full results of all of that work is yet to be seen. For now. though. the 2016 Conseillante is a pretty special wine. Don't miss it. Tasted two times.

The aromas of violets and dark berries with licorice and sweet black tea are so attractive. What really impresses is the sweet fruit in the dense middle palate. So attractive. At the same time. there’s plenty of plush and ripe tannins that give the wine form and brightness. And it still remains bright on the finish. as the tannins roll on. A great Conseillante. Try after 2024.

Medium to full-bodied. rich and fantastically concentrated. the generous fruit is superbly framed by firm. ripe. grainy tannins with tons of pepper. cinnamon and cloves layers coming through on the finish. Truly. a legendary Lynch Bages!

The 2016 Lynch-Bages delivers on its promise from barrel with an intense blackberry. cedar and mineral-driven bouquet that actually reminds me of Lafite-Rothschild. There is wonderful structure and focus on the finish. followed by a persistent saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Lynch-Bages. easily the best since the twin titans of 1989 and 1990.

Sage. lavender. menthol. licorice and wild cherry are all laced into the potent. dramatically sweeping finish. Readers should not be in a rush. as the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so. it is super-impressive today.

The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré is fabulous. Rich. ample and dramatic in bearing. the 2016 possesses striking intensity and vertical lift. The tannins certainly need at least a few years in bottle to soften. but there is so much to look forward to. Graphite. menthol. lavender and licorice complement the inky blue/purplish fruit beautifully. The bottled wine has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Merlot than the en primeur sample. I tasted the 2016 three times. It's least favorable showing was at the château. For readers and proprietors who think wines always taste better on site...they don't.

Hosanna gives the impression of a wine that is going to need quite a bit of time to fully recover from bottling. Today. the fruit is a bit muted. although the wine's power. depth and overall structure are very much present. Mocha. espresso. grilled herbs and leather build into the dark. somber finish.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) slips seductively out of the glass with perfumed scents of candied violets. chocolate-covered cherries. lavender and baked plums with nuances of redcurrants. forest floor. mossy bark and new leather. Medium to full-bodied. the palate has bags of grace and finesse with a super fine-grained frame and lovely freshness lifting the intense. perfumed fruits to a very long. mineral-tinged finished. Gorgeous.

The 2016 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse has come together beautifully since I last tasted it. There’s a very balanced feel to this wine with ripe blueberries and red plums. as well as dried flowers. The palate has a supple. smooth build of rich. blueberry and cassis flavor and a long. fine-tannin finish. A blend of 62% cabernet sauvignon. 36% merlot and 2% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Rauzan-Ségla is coming together very nicely. Soft and silky. the 2017 is a wine of pure and total finesse. Sweet red cherry and plum fruit. tobacco. cedar and licorice add pretty top notes. but more than anything else. the 2017 impresses with its statuesque elegance and total balance; nothing in particular stands out. For that reason. Rauzan-Ségla is the sort of wine that is easy to overlook. and yet all the elements of a top notch Left-Bank wine are present. Tasted three times.
