Forget it for a decade and follow it for the next two.

Aromas of cassis, black cherries, licorice, dried tobacco and wet earth. Some leafy character, too. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit character. Firm and compact with hints of crushed stones in the finish. A little timid at the end. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is very perfumed on the nose, offering vivid brambly red fruit, leather, undergrowth and cedar aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and cohesive, with a sappy opening and fine acidity. Lightly spiced, showing plenty of substance on the finish. While not the most consistent estate, Chasse-Spleen has it in its grasp to make great wines, and the 2019 is one of them.

The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is tight-fisted on the nose despite leaving my sample three or four hours to open. But I do appreciate the fruit profile: blackberry. wild strawberry. cedar and light tobacco scents almost reluctantly unfurling. The palate looks promising. classic in style. not reserved but not wanting to show off at this early stage. Fresh from the start. the acidity is well judged and it has an appealing grainy texture. It is detailed with touches of graphite lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2018 Fonréaud has an exuberant bouquet featuring more red than black fruit, offering raspberry and wild strawberry and touches of tobacco and espresso; I like the manner in which this unfolds. The medium-bodied palate is delineated with a fine bead of acidity and grainy tannins, although the oak seems to dominate on the finish and lends a dark chocolate smear that detracts from its precision (also one of its attributes in barrel). I hope that will be assimilated with time.

This has turned out brilliantly and numbers among the real sleepers of the vintage.

The 2019 Labégorce was the first vintage vinified in the new cellar and also the first to use Cabernet Franc from the north part of the appellation, on more limestone soils, a massal selection from an organic producer in the south of France. Matured in 40% new oak, this has a voluminous, multifaceted bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and perhaps more rose petal than violet at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, very well balanced, and a little spicier than I found from barrel, leading to a detailed, tensile finish.

There is an exotic quality to Poesia in 2019 that is especially alluring. Brilliant.
