8 Jan, 2022 – Very attractive chocolate, red-chili and cedar aromas and flavors. Lavender, too. Medium body with firm, polished tannins and a caressing finish. Pretty texture to this. It will be ready sooner than some. Try after 2024.

A fleshy, dramatic rendition of this Moulis benchmark, the 2019 Poujeaux unwinds in the glass with a deep bouquet of blackberries and plums mingled with subtle hints of cigar wrapper, loamy soil and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and seamless, with succulent acids, powdery tannins and a long, expansive finish. This has turned out brilliantly and numbers among the real sleepers of the vintage.

The 2019 Poujeaux has a very delineated, focused bouquet of blackberry, cedar, mint and light tea leaf scents, one of the most complex I have encountered from this great estate in recent years. The medium-bodied palate is fresh, vibrant and grippy, with slightly chalky tannins and a saline, persistent finish. Quite structured and broody, this Moulis deserves ample time in bottle.

While not the most consistent estate, Chasse-Spleen has it in its grasp to make great wines, and the 2019 is one of them.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, good backbone, firm grip and much more substance on the finish compared to previous vintages, that tincture of Earl Grey coming through with time. This is an excellent, classically styled Pauillac.

The 2019 Dalem offers almost Burgundian purity on the nose, where blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone and pressed iris petal commingle. The palate is beautifully proportioned and quite saline, with fine tannins and an almost pixelated finish, which delivers superb grip and density. This is an outstanding Fronsac that will live long in the bottle. Excellent.

Exhibiting aromas of cassis, loamy coil, cigar box and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely balanced, with a fleshy core of fruit and ripe, youthfully chewy tannins.

As I suggested before, I would have liked more personality on the finish, which feels a little abrupt.

Der 2019er La Dame de Montrose, den ich im Juni und September 2021 verkostet habe, hat ein frisches Bouquet von Maulbeeren, schwarzen Pflaumen und granitbedingter Frische, das ziemlich frühreif ist; im Hintergrund erscheinen Noten von Morcheln. Der Gaumen ist mittelkräftig mit feinkörnigen Tanninen, ziemlich strukturiert und fast Pauillac-artig, dank Adern von Graphit zum Finish hin, die durch die 48% Cabernet Sauvignon beigesteuert werden. Salziger Nachgeschmack, wenn auch nicht übermäßig lang, dies ist ein sehr vielversprechender Zweitwein.

The 2019 Haut-Batailley is a potent, muscular Pauillac that will need a few years in bottle, at a minimum, to be at its best. There's real presence and depth here, but all the wine's energy feels like it is focused inward. Dark red/purplish fruit, leather, menthol, spice and wild flowers fill out the layers as this broad, ample Pauillac shows off its distinctive personality. Readers should be in no rush.

The 2019 Haut-Batailley, matured in 60% new oak for 14 months, has a tensile, well-defined bouquet, linear and focused (much more so than last year from barrel), featuring blackberry, briar, that same tincture of blood orange and a hint of cedar. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry and very cohesive and harmonious. Though there is a little new oak to be subsumed, that will happen over the next 2–3 years. Showing great depth and composure on the finish, this is a wonderful Pauillac that will give 30 or 40 years of drinking pleasure.

Aromen von süßen Kirschen, Blütenblättern und Lakritz eröffnen den 2022 Château Mangot, einen mittel- bis vollmundigen, dichten und vielschichtigen Wein, der elegant und facettenreich ist. Sein konzentrierter Kern aus lebendiger Frucht wird von süßen, pudrigen Tanninen getragen. Es ist der beste Mangot, den ich bisher verkostet habe, und in zehn Jahren werden Weinliebhaber viel Freude daran haben, ihn in Blindverkostungen mit renommierten Namen zu vergleichen.

Zekun Shuai im Januar 2025:

Ein ziemlich frischer, mineralischer und lebendiger St.-Emilion, der mich mit Gartenkräutern, Brombeeren und einer ansprechenden Note von weißem Pfeffer fesselt. Auch viele nasse Steine und Blumen sind zu finden. Sehr strukturiert und kompakt, hat dieser Wein vibrierende, kreidige Tannine und ein breites, langanhaltendes Finish. Straff und dicht, aber Frische und Balance sind gut im Griff. Ab 2027 zu genießen.
