Zur Feier seiner 40. Ernte an der Spitze des Weinguts hat Olivier Bernard einen Wein mit großem Potenzial geschaffen. Der 2022 Domaine de Chevalier verströmt Aromen von dunklen Wildbeeren, Gewürzen, Rauch und Lakritz, umrahmt von einem dezenten Hauch neuen Holzes. Am Gaumen zeigt er sich mittel- bis vollmundig, konzentriert und reichhaltig, mit einem eleganten, fleischigen Fruchtkern, feinen pudrigen Tanninen und einem langen, zarten Abgang mit dunkler Beerenfrucht. Spürbar weniger röstig und würzig als im Vorjahr, hat sich der Stil des Weinguts positiv weiterentwickelt. Der Wein reift 18 Monate lang in einer Kombination aus neuen (35 %) und gebrauchten Fässern. Die Cuvée besteht aus 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 % Merlot, 3 % Petit Verdot und 2 % Cabernet Franc.

Mehrfach verkostet, zeigt sich der 2022 Domaine de Chevalier wunderschön mit einem 2009-ähnlichen Stil, geprägt von würzigen roten und schwarzen Früchten, Tabak, neuem Leder und Graphit. Diese Aromen setzen sich am Gaumen in einem mittel- bis vollmundigen Wein fort, der eine geschmeidige, vielschichtige Textur, wunderschön polierte Tannine und eine nahezu makellose Balance besitzt. Er ist weder massiv noch übertrieben und besticht durch seine Harmonie und Komplexität. Basierend auf 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 % Merlot, 3 % Petit Verdot und dem Rest Cabernet Franc, kann dieser verführerische und bereits zugängliche 2022er über die nächsten 30 bis 40 Jahre genossen werden..

Zeigt einen wunderbar geschliffenen Kern aus Cassis- und Kirschreduktion, während die für den Jahrgang typischen Noten von warmem Gusseisen, Lorbeer und Tabak den gesamten Wein durchziehen. Akzente von Veilchen und gerösteter Kastanie sorgen für zusätzliche Komplexität und Länge. Eine reine, tiefe, lange und beeindruckende Interpretation von Pessac. Der 2022 Domaine de Chevalier springt mit verführerischen Aromen von Brombeeren, Weihrauch und Heidelbeeren aus dem Glas, ohne dabei zurückhaltend zu sein. Trotz der Intensität bewahrt er eine hervorragende Definition und Fokussierung, mit wunderschön integriertem Holz. Am Gaumen zeigt er sich mittelgewichtig, vollgepackt mit schwarzen Früchten, durchzogen von Graphit und einem Hauch schwarzem Pfeffer. Sehr gut ausbalanciert, gehört er eindeutig zu den kraftvollsten Weinen, die ich je von Domaine de Chevalier probiert habe, ohne dabei an klassischer Eleganz einzubüßen. Einfach herausragend.

Schöne dunkle und reife Nase, gute Klarheit der Frucht, Kirsche, Cassis, dunkle Beeren. Auch hier wieder eine gewisse Würze. Gut eingebundenes Holz zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Im Mund ist der Wein weiterhin dunklefruchtig, aber die Tannine sind sehr poliert und samtig, eine frische Säure zieht sich durch den Wein. Der Ausklang ist wirklich klar, lang und mit gewisser Würze.

Mit einem ernsten, leicht introvertierten Charakter, geprägt von Noten von Lakritz, Enzian, Gewürzen und dunklen Wildbeeren, präsentiert sich der 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte mit einem mittel- bis vollmundigen, konzentrierten und dichten Gaumen. Ein fleischiger Fruchtkern und eine großzügig extrahierte Struktur mit einem ausgeprägten Tanningerüst erfordern Zeit zur Reife. Das lange, dichte Finale mit Anklängen von Enzian zeigt, dass der Wein Zeit benötigt, um seinen Ausbau zu verdauen und mit der Lagerung an Harmonie und Balance zu gewinnen.

Der Grand Vin, der 2022 Château Smith Haut Lafitte, besteht aus 64 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 32 % Merlot sowie Cabernet Franc und Petit Verdot und wurde in 60 % neuem französischem Eichenholz ausgebaut. Er erinnert mich an eine elegantere Version des Jahrgangs 2010 und zeigt sich in einem dichten Purpurton. Das reichhaltige, kraftvolle, vollmundige und sensationell komplexe Bouquet bietet Cassis und dunklere Beeren, verwoben mit Rauchnoten, verbrannter Erde, Schokolade und kreidiger Mineralität. Am Gaumen ist er konzentriert, tief und vielschichtig mit reifen, samtigen Tanninen – ein sensationelles, geradezu himmlisches Meisterwerk, das 40–50 Jahre reifen kann. Neben den Jahrgängen 2009, 2010 und 2020 gehört er zu den größten Weinen, die dieses Weingut je hervorgebracht hat. Ein absolutes Muss!

Der 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte ist seidig, elegant und nuanciert. Alles ist vorhanden. Ein Wein von Präzision und Klasse, der in seiner Raffinesse beeindruckt. Feine, geschmeidige Tannine umhüllen einen Kern aus blauen und violetten Früchten, Lavendel, Espresso und Mokka. Derzeit wirkt der 2022er noch etwas zurückhaltend, doch das dürfte für seine langfristige Entwicklung von Vorteil sein. Ich bin gespannt, wie er sich mit der Reife entfaltet.

Ein warmer Strom von Cassis, Pflaumenpüree und eingekochten Kirschen strömt aus dem Glas und vermittelt dennoch eine polierte Eleganz. Süßer Tabak, schwarze Lakritze und Veilchennoten fügen sich harmonisch ein, während ein Hauch von Espresso-Crema den langen, opulenten Abgang abrundet. Obwohl der Wein durch seine Textur fast schon zugänglich wirkt, wird eine Lagerung mit Sicherheit belohnt. Eine Cuvée aus Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc und Petit Verdot. Am besten zwischen 2026 und 2042 genießen. Produzierte Menge: 8.000 Kisten, davon 2.400 exportiert.

Der 2022 Haut-Brion, der im Mai 2024 abgefüllt wurde, erfüllt die hohen Erwartungen, die ich an ihn gestellt hatte, und übertrifft sie sogar. Er zeigt ein dichtes, komplexes und präzises Bouquet aus dunklen Beeren, Bleistiftmine, Zedernholz, Rose und Gewürzen, die mit dezenten Holznoten verwoben sind. Der Wein ist vollmundig, dicht und konzentriert, mit einem kräftigen Tannin-Gerüst und einem umhüllenden Fruchtkern, der Energie und Reinheit bewahrt und mit jugendlichem Griff endet. Ein vertikaler, explosiver Wein, der 2022 wird noch einige Jahre brauchen, um sein Bestes zu zeigen. Ich vermute, dass er in vielen Jahren großartig sein wird. On the palate, the wine is fresh, bright, vibrant, lifted and floral. The wine is elevated, refined, soft, and silky with a refreshing, silky edge to the fruits in the finish. The wine is pure elegance There is nothing between you and the fruits. There is intensity, length, and a striking sense of purity. The wine lingers seamlessly for 60 seconds, or longer. The wine blends 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. 14.45% ABV, 3.83 pH. Harvesting took place August 29 - September 15. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare, with 50% of the harvest placed into the Grand Vin. This is not only in competition for wine of the vintage, it is one of the best vintages of Haut Brion ever produced. If you are an Haut-Brion fan with the disposable income, you cannot own enough of this future legend. Drink from 2030-2065.

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite fleshy but still nicely structured, and showing fine backbone on the sappy, white-pepper- and sage-tinged finish. Now this is promising.

The 2013 De Fieuzal Blanc has quite a candied nose with hints of brown sugar lurking behind that veneer of tropical fruit. For Fieuzal I find this refreshingly vivacious in style. That comes through on the palate with nectarine and peach skin, a keen line of acidity with a slightly overworked finish that is more phenolic than its peers. It needs 3 or 4 years in bottle to really show its mettle, though instinct tells me that it will be worth waiting for.

The 2016 Malartic Lagraviere is blended of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon. 40% Merlot. 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color. it opens with wild blueberries and black cherries with cassis. bay leaves and dark chocolate nuances plus a hint of charcoal. Medium-bodied with a lively backbone and solid frame of ripe. rounded tannins. it finishes with an herbal lift.

I love the deep and complex nose. in which the cassis and mint of cabernet sauvignon are beautifully married to the more generous blackberry of ripe merlot and the vanilla and toasty notes from the oak are marvelously integrated. On the palate it creeps up on you slowly; the first impression is ripe yet delicate. then the fine-grained tannins charge through and light up the sky. Very long finish. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Domaine de Chevalier is a magical wine in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of wild plums, crushed blackcurrants and violets mingled with hints of pencil shavings, subtle spices and coniferous forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a vibrant core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and lively acids, it's exquisitely elegant and harmonious, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Stylistically, this wine exhibits a much closer affinity with the great Domaine de Chevalier of yesteryear than much of what was produced here in the early 2000s. It's a masterclass in what contemporary Bordeaux can deliver, and worth a special effort to seek out.

A rush of dark cherry. plum. smoke. scorched earth. grilled herb. leather and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its compelling. inviting personality. I would prefer to give the 2016 at least a few years in bottle to allow its full breadth of aromatics to develop. Even so. there is so much to like. Pliant. supple and super-expressive. Pape Clément is gorgeous in 2016. Tasted two times.

Coming from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Château Pape Clement from Bernard Magrez is a gorgeous wine that's performing even better from bottle than barrel, which is always a good sign. Deep ruby/purple, with stunning crème de cassis and blackberry fruits as well as kaleidoscope-like notes of graphite, scorched earth, smoke, violets, and spring flowers, it offers full-bodied richness yet stays light on its feet, graceful, and almost ethereal on the palate, with integrated acidity and building yet seamless tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon really sings at this point, and there's almost a Médoc-like regalness here. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant 2005 (it also has similarities to the 2016), it will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for 30+ years.

The 2019 Pape-Clément was a real show-stopper from barrel. Now in bottle since summer 2021, it has a more refined nose that I feel is perhaps just a little closed in as it approaches its first winter. Aeration reveals some lovely rose petal and incense aromas (there’s something almost Burgundian, Morey-Saint-Denis–like about its purity). The palate is extremely well balanced with velvety tannins and perfectly judged acidity. The oak (65% new, in the form of 400-liter barrels that have been employed since 2018) are beautifully integrated. This fans out wonderfully on the finish. One of the finest releases from Pape-Clément in recent years.

Now. matured in 50% new oak and bottled at the end of April 2018 (they prefer to bottle before spring here). it has a very well defined bouquet of black fruit. graphite. crushed stone and light rose petal aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. This Haut-Bailly feels pure and classic in style. offering well-judged acidity and a sophisticated. quite tensile finish that lingers long in the mouth. I suspect this might close down in a year or two and deserves perhaps 8 to 10 years in bottle to show what it can really do. The best Haut-Bailly in the modern era? For certain.

Offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, chocolate, violets, damp earth, and truffle, it hits the palate with a full-bodied yet almost understated, building style that carries ripe, supple tannins, gorgeous amounts of smoky black fruits, and an endearing, layered, multi-dimensional texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. A dead ringer for a great vintage of Haut-Brion, it is far from unapproachable today yet needs 7-8 years of bottle age for the fireworks to develop and will have 50-years or more of longevity! The 2016 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion comes from vines located in the clos over towards Martillac, rather than the vines in the original Les Carmes Haut-Brion vineyard in the Bordeaux suburbs, known as "Le Clos des Carmes Haut-Brion" up until the 2013 vintage. It is a blend of 51% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvigon and 1% Petit Verdot, matured in 30% new oak and the remainder one year old barrels. This includes 25% whole berry fruit. It offers plenty of brambly black fruit on the nose, crushed violets, fresh fig and a touch of spice that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, neatly integrated oak, a little plushness on the entry thanks to the Merlot, and then it dovetails into a more structured, gently grippy, chalk-textured finish with attractive black fruit. Give this two or three years in bottle just to shave off a little abrasiveness and you will have a fine Pessac-Léognan.

Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier turned out another stellar wine with the 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion. Elegant, polished and wonderfully nuanced to the core, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. Whole clusters enhance a whole range of Cabernet Franc inflections in a wine that is immediately seductive. On the palate, the 2019 is creamy and textured. Plum, blood orange, spice, mocha and dried herbs lend an exotic quality that is so alluring. The 2019 is a mysterious, totally seductive wine that no one who is serious about Bordeaux will want to miss. To be sure, Les Carmes is far from typical, but it is incredibly unique. Its longevity is likely to be measured in multiples of decades. Quite simply, I loved it.

The 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has turned out very well in bottle. Mingling aromas of plums and cassis with notions of blood orange, warm spices and new oak, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit that's framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it's reminiscent of a more giving, extroverted version of Pouthier's superb 2016. As is now the rule at this address, some whole bunches were retained during maceration, and the wine saw a long élevage in a variety of vessels, from classic 225-liter Bordeaux barriques to foudres and amphorae. The blend is dominated by 42% Cabernet Franc, complemented by 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot.

Der C des Carmes Haut Brion ist einfach ein fantastischer Weinwert. Jeder redet zwar über das Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion, aber ein weiterer Teil der unglaublichen Erfolgsgeschichte die hier im Zusammenhang steht, haben noch zu wenige auf dem Radar! Diesen ebenso unglaublich guten Wein, der sich von einem Hoch zum anderen hangelt, dürfen Sie einfach nicht verpassen. Er wird nicht en Primeur vermarktet und tritt demzufolge erst später in Erscheinung, dennoch wird er immer zu den Primeursproben gezeigt. Oft verlassen wir das Weingut mit einem breiten Grinsen und freuen uns auf den nächsten Release des C des Carmes. Denn was man hier für deutlich unter 40€ bekommt ist immer eine wahre Freude für die Geschmackspapillen. Genuss wird bei diesem feinen und so balancierten Pessac Leognan gross geschrieben. Die Cuvee besteht aus zwei drittel Cabernet und 1 drittel Merlot, mit Varianzen in den Jahrgängen. Der Ausbau erfolgt über 20% in neuen Fässern und die 80% in gebrauchten Fässern. Und wenn ich Ihnen jetzt noch verrate, dass sich das selbe Team um diesen Wein kümmert wie es das auch bei Chateau Carmes Haut Brion tut, sollten Sie mir versprechen, nicht zu viel die Werbetrommel für diesen Geheimtipp zu schlagen, denn sonst kann es das bald gewesen sein mit diesem Bargain Tipp aus Pessac.

Ein anderer Wein als der Grand Vin, da er aus einer bestimmten Parzelle in Léognan statt Pessac stammt. Er öffnet sich mit Blüten, Tabakblatt, Kirschen, Orangenschale und Hickoryrauch. Am Gaumen frisch, kraftvoll, knackig und süß, mit roten Früchten, einer Prise salzigen Kalks und Gewürz im Nachhall. Genuss pur bei der Freigabe.

Der 2021 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion ist ein herausragender Wein. Reich, komplex und äußerst expressiv, besitzt er bemerkenswerte Tiefe und texturale Intensität. Er stammt von einem eigenen Gut zwischen Smith und Haut-Bailly, wo das Mikroklima wärmer ist. Cabernet Sauvignon dominiert die Cuvée dieses tief strukturierten Roten. 25 % Stiele wurden verwendet, doch die Ganztrauben gehen in der Intensität der Frucht fast unter. Kies, Tabak, Weihrauch und verbrannte Erde fügen Ebenen hinzu, während sich im Finish florale Noten zeigen. Vor allem bewundere ich die Persistenz. 24 Monate im Fass — 25 % in französischen Barriques, 75 % in 30-hl-Fudern.

Der 2021 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion, von Cabernet Sauvignon getragen, besitzt ein charmantes, gourmandes Bouquet mit Aromen von Rose, Kirschen, Veilchen, Heidelbeeren und Gewürzen, gefolgt von einem mittel- bis vollmundigen, saftigen und geschmeidigen Gaumen mit lebhafter Mitte und zartem Fruchtkern, der in ein langes, durchdringendes und mundwässerndes Finish übergeht.
