The Standish WIne Company - Barossa Valley
The Standish WIne Company - Barossa Valley

I consider Dan Standish the reigning king of Barossa Shiraz. On a conference-room table at Peter Lehmann, surrounded by other top-quality wines, his 2016s completely bowled me over for their intensity, complexity and harmony. And, according to Standish, 2016 was an easy vintage. One-and-a-half inches of rain in January slowed down the ripening until harvest could take place under slightly cooler conditions. "We had tiny berries, we had to do nothing in the vineyards," he said. Sourced from single old-vine plantings in the subregions of Ebenezer, Marananga, Greenock and Hutton Vale, this is a prodigious collection of wines, meticulously produced in tiny quantities from old vines and low yields.

98 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den The Standish 2017 Lamella ShirazJoe Czerwinski im August 2018:

The star of this year's lineup is the 2017 Lamella Shiraz, sourced from a single dry-grown Eden Valley vineyard in the vicinity of Henscke's Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace vineyards. It shows a healthy dusting of cracked peppery and dried spices but also layers of red and blue fruit and savory notes of black olives and espresso. Full-bodied and silky but taut, it ideally needs another 2-3 years of cellaring to soften the tannins on the long, dusty finish.

After reviewing the stunning 2016s last year, I was excited to try the 2017s and 2018s at Dan Standish's small winery. The 2017 vintage, said Dan, was his biggest ever, yet he bottled the least wine. "With its long, slow, even ripening, it's probably the ideal vintage to show the different [Barossa] subregions," he said. Each of the named wines comes from a specific vineyard in a different part of Barossa. The Relic comes from Krondorf, Schubert Theorem from Marananga, The Standish from Greenock, Lamella from Eden Valley and Andelmonde from Light Pass. Generally, the wines see about 20% new oak (all French), with the proportion of whole clusters varying, depending on the vintage and the vineyard. Also depending on the vintage, Standish bottles all, some or none of the wines, with any barrels that don't make the cut being sold in bulk. After his blockbuster 2016s, the 2017s come across as slightly less complete yet still delicious, while the 2018s—"a typical Barossa vintage," according to Standish—look extremely promising.

Mulberries and blueberries appear alongside a hint of white pepper on the nose of Standish's 2017 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz, sourced from Marananga. It's full-bodied, firm and structured, loaded with mixed berries and balanced by savory undercurrents of espresso and black olive. It finishes long and mouthwatering yet also dusty and tannic. Give it another 2-3 years in the cellar and drink it over the following decade or so.

Sourced from the Standish Family Vineyard – Siegersdorf Road, Vine Vale, Barossa Valley. Planted on own roots in 1912 (7.6 Hectares – 12ft x 10ft spacing). Fine white sand over deep heavy red clay at 302m above sea level.

Dense, latent and strapping, this flaunts the flawless purity that can be leached from the famed sandy flints of Vine Vale. Tightly wound with its cards close to the vest, deep-set aromatics of coal, pressed currant and black truffle are foiled by redolent tones of tilled soil, beef broth and slow roasted meats. Dark and brooding with immense concentration, persistence and energy it is somewhat of a heroic style but is gently laced with a long fine cloak of silken tannin. More reticent than its stable mate, it shows wonderful staying power for those with immense patience and cool, dark cellars.

Der 2016er ist leider bereits ausverkauft. Er erhielt folgende Bewertung:

Lifted, herbal notes of mint, thyme and sage appear on the nose of the 2017 The Standish Shiraz. They're followed by waves of raspberries and more raspberries, fleshing out the full-bodied palate and lingering onto the long, silky finish, where they're joined by savory roasted-meat and espresso notes. While almost approachable now, a few years in the cellar surely wouldn't hurt.

97 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Standish The Relic 2017 Shiraz ViognierJoe Czerwinski am 27. November 2019:

Standish's 2017 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier includes 2% Viognier, just enough to soften the wine's considerable tannins and add a floral element on the nose. Gorgeous scents of brambly blackberries and anise lead into a wine that's full-bodied and plush, long and silky, adding hints of cocoa and espresso on the finish.

Standish The Relic 2018 Shiraz Viognier mit 95 Sucklingpunkten ausgezeichnetTastingnote vom 30 July 2020

From an east-facing slope with ridges of quartz, offering very attractive blackberries and plums and some dark violet florals, too. This has a really expressive feel. The palate has plush, fleshy, deep-set fruit flavors and a gently spicy thread. Deep black-fruit finish with rich dark plums and blackberries. Smooth, plush tannin. Full-bodied, but approachable. A 2% co-ferment of viognier. Long, blackberry finish. Drink or hold.

Standish The Relic 2018 Shiraz Viognier mit 96-99 Punkte vom Wine Advocate ausgezeichnetJoe Czerwinski am 29. November 2020:

Despite being only 2% Viognier, in its current state, Standish's 2018 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier shows prominent notes of stone fruit and spice, plus the blackberries and blueberries of the Shiraz. Full-bodied, lush and creamy-textured, with a long, silky finish, this beauty should drink well for a couple of decades after its release next year.

Standish The Schubert Theorem 2018 mit 100 Sucklingpunkten ausgezeichnetTastingnote vom 30 July 2020

Mica-laced soil from the Schubert Vineyard in Roenfeldt Road, Marananga and fermented as 50% whole clusters. The site has six parts and all are made as a single parcel and then the wine is assembled. There’s distinctive complexity of fruit here with all shades of red, blue and purple through to black. There are also ripe dark peaches and nectarines as well. There’s a spicy edge, too, with some almost flinty, graphite notes. The palate has such intensity and power and really long, deep black fruit builds through the finish. Impeccable depth of tannin here. Rich blood plum flavors, intersected with blackberry. So saturated in flavor, so long and full of energy. The vinous intensity on the finish is spectacular. This is something really special. Try from 2024.

Standish The Schubert Theorem 2018 mit 96-98 Punkte vom Wine AdvocateJoe Czerwinski am 27. November 2019:

Mint, sage and thyme accent blackberry and black cherry fruit in the 2018 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz. Full-bodied and rich without being heavy, it finishes tremendously long, with silky, cocoa-powder-like tannins. It should drink well for a couple of decades.

The Standish 2018 Lamella Shiraz mit 97 Sucklingpunkten ausgezeichnetTastingnote vom 30 July 2020

From the Hutton Vale Vineyard. This is very fragrant, very spicy and lightly peppery with such a distinctive nose, offering blueberries and some cedary oak, as well as berry-pastry, pie-crust and spicy notes. The palate has such distinctive freshness and detail with a granular texture to the tannins (100% whole cluster fermentation) and brightness from cooler-climate acidity. Dense, focused finish. This needs five years to settle, best from 2026.

The Standish 2018 Lamella Shiraz mit 98-100 Parker Punkten ausgezeichnetJoe Czerwinski am 27. November 2019:

Another potentially perfect wine, the 2018 Lamella Shiraz, from the Eden Valley, is full-bodied and velvety in texture. Offering swirls of complex mixed berries, tea and spice, it finishes long and tannic, with plenty of backbone and structure, plus intriguing hints of espresso and chocolate. In contrast to The Standish, it's more impressive, while The Standish is more opulent and generous.

The Standish 2018 Single Vineyard Shiraz Barossa Valley mit 98 Sucklingpunkten ausgezeichnetTastingnote vom 30 July 2020

Greenock parcel with an ironstone base and plenty of ironstone through the top soil. This has is super complex and fragrant with some orange zest, intense raspberries, blackberries and an almost Rhône-like blood-orange edge. There’s a deeply spicy thread, driven by oak, which suits the dark-berry and dark-chocolate aromas. Sheer, polished and glossy with a very intense, concentrated delivery of blackberries and dark plums. So polished and silky, powerful and graceful. This has luxurious texture and such underlying power. Drink or hold.

The Standish 2018 Single Vineyard Shiraz Barossa Valley mit 98-100 Parker PunktenJoe Czerwinski am 29. November 2020:

The 2018 The Standish Shiraz (a sample blend from barrel) is a bit stalky (it's about 50% whole cluster), but it's gorgeously perfumed, with hints of herbal tea, raspberries, blackberries and licorice. It just exudes complexity, while also being full-bodied, plush and creamy, with a long, elegant finish. This seamless beauty is a candidate for perfection.
