Chateau L´Evangile

Eine Laune der Geologie lässt im Südosten des Plateaus von Pomerol einen langen Streifen Kieselboden an die Oberfläche treten. Der Weingüter, darunter L´Evangile, teilen sich dieses seltene Terroir. Dieses Weingut grenzt im Norden an die Weinberge von Chateau Petrus und wird im Süden nur durch eine Nebenstraße von Cheval Blanc getrennt. Das Anwesen entstand im 18. Jahrhundert unter der Leitung der Familie Leglise und erhielt an der Wende des 19. Jahrhunderts den Namen L´Evangile. 1862 wurde es von Paul Chaperon gekauft, dessen Erben, die Familie Ducasse, bis 1990 Eigentümer des Chateaus blieben. 1990 wurde L´Evangile von den Domaines Barons de Rothschild / Lafite erworben. Der Einfluss von DBR zeigt sich zunächst in einer strengeren Selektion für den ersten Wein und in der Einführung des Zweitweins „Le Blason de L´Evangile“. Darüber hinaus wurde ab 1998 ein Renovierungsplan umgesetzt. Die neue Konfiguration wurde 2004 mit der Instandsetzung der Gär- und Weinkeller abgeschlossen. Gekrönt wurden diese Anstrengungen von einem Jahrzehnt herausragender Jahrgänge.

In the running for the most opulent, sensationally textured, massive wine in the vintage is the 2015 L'Evangile and if tasting this beauty doesn’t make your heart rate increase, I don’t know what will. Made from 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc brought up in plenty of new oak, its ruby/plum color is followed by an awesome bouquet of blackberry jam, smoked meats, licorice, truffle, and hints of chocolate. Thick, opulent, super ripe, and decadent, with a full-bodied mouthfeel that needs to be tasted to be believed, it still stays balanced and fresh on the palate and is already impossible to resist. It’s going to keep for 3+ decades. This is one of those wines I wish every reader could taste!

The 2015 L'Evangile is composed of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc and was matured for 18 months in new oak barrels from Tonnellerie des Domaines (their own cooperage). Deep garnet-purple in color. it absolutely leaps from the glass with complex. gregarious notes of blackberry pie. plum preserves. smoked meats/charcuterie. mocha and licorice plus suggestions of cloves. black soil and unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied. rich. opulent and jaw-droppingly sexy. it has beautifully plush yet firm tannins with a lively backbone and a very long. spicy finish.

Chateau L Evangile 2023 Pomerol

Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of dark berries, spices, licorice and petals, framed by a sweet patina of new oak, the 2023 L'Evangile is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack that segues into a supple, integrated core that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins. It's a blend of 78% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, checking in at 13.5% alcohol, that was harvested between September 4 and 28.

A fine line of tannins runs through this medium- to full-bodied wine. Chocolate, walnut and lead pencil on very fine tannins. Classy and focused, providing elegance with strength. Tight at the end. 78% merlot, 21% cabernet franc and 1% cabernet sauvignon.

A fascinating exercise in terroir, as this shows the same alcohol as the Blason, but the density, fruit character and even the IPT (tannin) count are very different. You see the impact of clay soils in the building of the powerful architecture and the plush damson and black cherry fruits. There is density but tenderness to the tannins, with grilled caramel that gives a beautiful Pomerol signature. Violet floral edging arrives towards the finish, as things open up, and this is an impressive L'Evangile that can age with ease. 42hl/h yield, a record in recent years here. Given the young average age of this estate's vineyards, its well-draining soils and the extreme vintage, I was a little apprehensive; but the technical team evidently took the conditions in their stride, harvesting the east-facing side of the vines (which sees the hottest afternoon sun) four days earlier. The resulting 2022 L'Evangile is beautiful, offering up aromas of raspberries, vine smoke, black truffles, violets and gravely soil. Medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, it's seamless and polished, with a bright core of fruit and powdery tannins that temper 2022's inherent sweetness of fruit to sophisticated effect. At this early stage, it appears that the estate's progress with regards to élevage continues too, as Evangile's creamy oak signature is much released, allowing the fruit—and this superb terroir—to take center stage. It's a blend of 82% Merlot, 17.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep in color, the wine pops with its nose of violets, black cherry, spice, cinnamon, and chocolate. On the palate, the wine quickly focuses you on its core of black cherries, black plums, spices, cocoa, espresso, and savory herbs. Elegantly textured, with softness, refinement, length and freshness, the finish has length, purity, and freshness on the back end that stands out. The is a complete change in direction from the recent vintages that were focused more on density. With the 2022, the wine is about its elegant nature. The wine blends 82% Merlot, 17.5% Cabernet Franc and .05% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% ABV, 3.8 pH. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. The harvest took place August 29 - September 14. The wine is aging in a combination of 50% new, French oak, 15% amphora and 10% foudres. Drink from 2027-2055.

The 2018 L'Evangile is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot was harvested September 19 to October 2. and the Cabernet Franc was harvested September 25 to October 1. This is the optimal blend - with more Cabernet Franc coming through this year, since it was amazing. Deep garnet-purple colored, it slips seductively out of the glass with glamorous notes of baked black cherries, warm blueberries and raspberry tart plus wafts of kirsch, red roses, rose hip tea, espresso. licorice and sandalwood. Full-bodied. rich. concentrated and delivering opulent black fruit layers, the palate has a firm frame of lovely, ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Beautiful.

The 2018 L'evangile is shaping up to be exceptional. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, the 2018 exudes richness in all of its dimensions. Opulent and dense in the glass, with soft curves and silky, polished tannins, the 2018 is hugely promising. All the elements just fall into place. Dark raspberry jam, cloves, menthol and new leather are some of the many notes that build in a sumptuous, racy evangile loaded with class and personality. I can't wait to taste it from bottle.
