The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich. sumptuous and explosive in the glass. the 2015 is pure class. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous. spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit. spice. lavender. licorice and menthol all develop in the glass. but it is the wine's textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today. it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No. there is not. This is a tremendous showing.

The 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan was bottled in mid-May as usual. This was one of the wines of the vintage out of barrel. and now it has a compelling bouquet with blackberry. smoke and iris. There is wonderful delineation here. a cerebral bouquet that is quite mercurial in the glass. traces of black truffle emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and just a killer line of acidity. a Vieux Chateau Certan surfeit with energy and joie de vivre. It fans out in glorious. almost swaggering fashion with truffle and white pepper. a touch of truffle on the persistent finish. This is clearly destined to be one among the canon of legendary wines from the estate although it does deserve requisite cellaring. This is one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055.

I was able to taste both the 2015 and 2016 grand vins, and these are heavenly, magical wines that could not be any better. Starting with the 2015 Vieux Château Certan, it shows the opulent, flamboyant style of the vintage to a T and reveals a saturated purple/ruby color, a monster bouquet of blackberries, tobacco, kirsch, dried spices, and loamy earth, full-bodied richness, sweet tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. A thrill a minute, wine doesn’t get any better, and I only wish every reader could taste this beauty. Drink it any time over the coming 30 years or more.

A creamy texture of stone. chalk and lemon rind from the tannins and acidity. Wow. Loving it. The caressing character is so memorable. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.

The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is a blend of 80% Merlot.. 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. cropped between September 17 and October 2 at 42 hectoliters per hectare. The IPT is healthy 83 and the pH is 3.72. the alcohol 14.6%. Enough statistics. What you need to know is that it is a beguiling Pomerol that will set hearts aflutter. It is bridled with a heavenly bouquet with intense red and black fruit. black truffle and a touch of smoke. opening wonderfully in the glass; the Cabernet Franc is very expressive and imparting a licorice note after ten minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with intensity. with a killer line of acidity that imparts freshness from the very start. There is life-affirming tension interwoven throughout this extremely complex wine from Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont. There are layers. more like a mille-feuille of blackberry. boysenberry. mineral. truffle and a touch of spice towards the finish. just a touch of warmth from the alcohol that merely complements an extraordinary and profound Pomerol.

IN DER RUHE LIEGT DIE KRAFT
80 % Merlot. 19 % Cabernet Franc. 1 % Cabernet Sauvignon. 42 hl/h. Sattes Purpur-Granat. dicht in der Mitte. lila Schimmer aussen. Der erste Nasenansatz hinterlässt deutlich florale Eindrücke. dahinter Pflaumen. Holunder und Heidelbeeren und eine schwarze Pfefferwürze aufweisend. Wunderbar anschmiegsamer Gaumen. verloursartige Textur. im Innern mit feiner Rasse im Extrakt. Bei längerem Gaumenkontakt zeigt er dann doch noch eine verlangende und potentialbietende Adstringenz. Das Finale ist fast nur noch schwarzbeerig. Ein grosser. möglicherweise bald einmal legendärer Vieux Château Certan. Die 14.6 Volumen gelten für einen VCC schon eher als Ausnahmefall.

The 2018, though, is extraordinarily beautiful right out of the gate.

Another heavenly Pomerol in the vintage, the 2018 Château Trotanoy checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in (I suspect) lots of new French oak (although it's certainly not apparent). Revealing a dense purple hue as well as a smorgasbord-like bouquet of blackcurrants, dried flowers, cured meats, violets, tobacco, and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a sexy, seductive texture, building yet sweet tannins, and just a rich, concentrated, yet flawless profile on the palate that's already impossible to resist. Nevertheless, a good 7-8 years of bottle age are warranted, and this magical elixir is going to evolve for 40 years or more.

The 2018 Trotanoy is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal a jaw-dropping perfume of Black Forest cake, black raspberries, blackberry pie and kirsch, followed by hints of cast-iron pan, violets, woodsmoke, Chinese five spice and eucalyptus, with a waft of tree bark. The full-bodied palate explodes with exotic spice and mineral fireworks, grounded by a concentrated, black and red berry preserves core and framed by firm, grainy tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. One of the most seamless, ethereal wines in the vintage, the 2018 Château La Fleur-Petrus checks in as 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot coming from a 45-acre vineyard of deep clay and gravelly soils located on the upper plateau of Pomerol. The vines average 35 years in age, and the élevage spans 16-18 months in 50% new French oak. Unquestionably in the same league as Trotanoy, Le Gay, Lafleur, Hosanna, and the other leviathans of the region, its deep purple hue is followed by a gorgeously layered, multi-dimensional 2018 with full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberry and blackcurrant fruits intermixed with spring flowers, dried herbs, and a hint of white truffle. Medium to full-bodied, with stunning symmetry and balance, its tannins are ripe and polished, and it has nicely integrated acidity as well as a great finish. It should drink well for another 20-25 years.

The 2019 Feytit-Clinet is superb. In most vintages, Feytit-Clinet is one of the more intense and tannic Pomerols. In 2019, though, some of that intensity is dialed down. On the plus side, though, that means the 2019 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Inky dark fruit, licorice, graphite, lavender, dried herbs and rose petal build into the sumptuous, creamy finish. Usually I advise cellaring Feytit-Clinet, but that will be less necessary in 2019. As always, Feytit-Clinet is one of the most distinctive wines in the Right Bank.

You could sit and nose this all day. The balanced palate is medium-bodied and grippy in the mouth. displaying supple tannin and a perfect line of acidity. Again. there is a symmetry about this Pomerol that is utterly beguiling. and the persistence is up there with the very best. Simply put. this is one of the best L’Eglise-Clinet wines I have tasted in recent years. Stunning.

The 2019 Vieux Château Certan is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. It is very clearly one of the highlights on the Right Bank. Soaring aromatics are immediately captivating. There is an exoticism in the 2019 that I saw from barrel that is evident in the bottled wine, but today, I see more balance and harmony. Crème de cassis, licorice, lavender, spice and rose petal blend into a core of red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced. The Grand Vin is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, but the blend also includes one lot of young vine Cabernet Sauvignon that was added for its aromatic presence. That decision paid off in spades, as the 2019 is truly magical.

The 2019 Vieux Château Certan was picked September 23–27 and October 2–3, and matured in two-thirds new oak. Alexandre Thienpont mentioned that the 2019 includes a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon, which displayed such distinctive aromatics that he had to include it in the final blend (unlike in 2020). He pointed to a scent of immortelle, a plant that grows on sand dunes. This was stunning as a barrel sample, and there is no change in bottle. It still delivers exquisitely delineated, vivacious scents of red fruit, touches of crushed stone and a suggestion of brine. The palate is medium-bodied and classic in style, the expressive Cabernet components complementing the Merlot. There’s fine backbone here, and this VCC fans out gloriously on the finish, with a surfeit of freshness and tension. Yet unlike some recent vintages, this is a Pomerol that says "Attendez!" Give it a decade in a cellar if you know what’s good for you.

The 2016 La Conseillante is a brilliant wine from the team led by Technical Director Marielle Cazaux. Polished and sophisticated. the 2016 possesses stunning vertical lift. with soaring aromatics that make a strong first impression. Silky and seductive on the palate. the 2016 is all about precision and energy in the early going. It is also one of the most quite. soft-spoken Pomerols of the vintage. Hints of blackberry. lavender. licorice and spice add nuance. but in 2016 La Conseillante stands out for its sublime balance and total sense of harmony. The 2016 spent 17 months in oak. 70% new. As gorgeous as the 2016 is. my impression is that the best is yet to come. Since arriving at La Conseillante. Cazaux has changed much in the farming of the property. including introducing cover crops and limiting yields. She also now works with no sulfites in winemaking and opts for lower temperatures in fermentation. In other words. the full results of all of that work is yet to be seen. For now. though. the 2016 Conseillante is a pretty special wine. Don't miss it. Tasted two times.

The potential complexity and sheer compelling quality of Hosanna is amazing. Aromatically. this may be the most profound wine of the vintage. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.
