on four separate occasions, the 2016 Château Clinet is another brilliant wine from this estate. Showing slightly more freshness and purity than the 2015, its saturated purple color is followed by a thrilling array of crème de cassis, graphite, ground herbs, and a terrific sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, with building tannins, and a magical sense of purity and elegance paired with real density and depth, it needs short term cellaring and will keep for three decades.

The 2016 Clinet is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged using the Oxoline system. in 70% new and 30% one-year-old barrels for 16 months. It has a deep garnet-purple color with cedar and smoked meats on the nose giving way to black and red plums and earthy notions with wafts of cassis and pencil shavings. The palate is medium to full-bodied. elegant. polished and vivacious with loads of red and black fruit layers and an earthy finish. Around 4.416 cases produced.

The 2016 Clinet. a blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. was cropped at 49hl/ha and matured in 70% new oak. It has a quintessential Pomerol bouquet of vibrant floral aromas. black cherries and hints of Christmas cake and truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and very harmonious and refined. The sample at the château showed a touch more backbone than the one at the London UGC tastings. offering plenty of blackberry and black olive notes and then turning saline toward the dense. muscular finish. A classy. sophisticated Clinet that will reward those with the nous to cellar it for several years. Outstanding.

The 2016 Clinet is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that was picked from 22 September for the young vines. the older vines picked 1 and 2 October. finishing with the Cabernet Sauvignon the following day. It was cropped at 49 hectoliters per hectare and matured in 70% new oak and the remainder in second-fill barrels. It has 14.15% alcohol and a record-breaking 94 IPT. It has a very linear bouquet. quite strict and intense with a light iodine and marine scent merging with the black fruit. This is a more "aristocratic" nose for Clinet. sophisticated and one of the most nuanced I have encountered. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin that forms the foundation of a more masculine Clinet. complex and focused with a subtle spiciness coming through on the finish. which fans out with confidence and leaves a disarming. saline tang in the mouth. Yes. this is a magnificent Clinet. cool and mineral-soaked. both cerebral and lip-smackingly delicious.

Inky blue/purplish fruit. spice. lavender. licorice and menthol all develop in the glass. but it is the wine's textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today. it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No. there is not. This is a tremendous showing.

The 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan was bottled in mid-May as usual. This was one of the wines of the vintage out of barrel. and now it has a compelling bouquet with blackberry. smoke and iris. There is wonderful delineation here. a cerebral bouquet that is quite mercurial in the glass. traces of black truffle emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and just a killer line of acidity. a Vieux Chateau Certan surfeit with energy and joie de vivre. It fans out in glorious. almost swaggering fashion with truffle and white pepper. a touch of truffle on the persistent finish. This is clearly destined to be one among the canon of legendary wines from the estate although it does deserve requisite cellaring. This is one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055.

The 2016 La Conseillante is a brilliant wine from the team led by Technical Director Marielle Cazaux. Polished and sophisticated. the 2016 possesses stunning vertical lift. with soaring aromatics that make a strong first impression. Silky and seductive on the palate. the 2016 is all about precision and energy in the early going. It is also one of the most quite. soft-spoken Pomerols of the vintage. Hints of blackberry. lavender. licorice and spice add nuance. but in 2016 La Conseillante stands out for its sublime balance and total sense of harmony. The 2016 spent 17 months in oak. 70% new. As gorgeous as the 2016 is. my impression is that the best is yet to come. Since arriving at La Conseillante. Cazaux has changed much in the farming of the property. including introducing cover crops and limiting yields. She also now works with no sulfites in winemaking and opts for lower temperatures in fermentation. In other words. the full results of all of that work is yet to be seen. For now. though. the 2016 Conseillante is a pretty special wine. Don't miss it. Tasted two times.

The aromas of violets and dark berries with licorice and sweet black tea are so attractive. What really impresses is the sweet fruit in the dense middle palate. So attractive. At the same time. there’s plenty of plush and ripe tannins that give the wine form and brightness. And it still remains bright on the finish. as the tannins roll on. A great Conseillante. The 2016 L’Eglise-Clinet was matured in 80% new oak and bottled in mid-April 2018. Crystal clear in color. it has an equally crystal clear bouquet that is utterly seductive. featuring red cherries. wild strawberry. peony and iris flowers and a hint of bay leaf. You could sit and nose this all day. The balanced palate is medium-bodied and grippy in the mouth. displaying supple tannin and a perfect line of acidity. Again. there is a symmetry about this Pomerol that is utterly beguiling. and the persistence is up there with the very best. Simply put. this is one of the best L’Eglise-Clinet wines I have tasted in recent years. Stunning.

Zweimal in Bordeaux im frühen Teil von 2017 verkostet, hat der 2014er Montrose seine Leistung bei der Vertikalprobe auf dem Anwesen im September 2016 bestätigt. Er hat diese exquisite Nase von Brombeeren, Zeder und Blutorange, die sich selbst in diesem frühen Stadium so sprudelnd anfühlt. Der Gaumen ist wunderschön ausbalanciert mit knackigen, spannungsvollen schwarzen Früchten, filigranen Tanninen, vielleicht in den letzten Monaten mit etwas mehr Würze im Abgang. Es ist einfach ein schöner, königlicher und vollständiger Montrose, der Jahrzehnte des Trinkgenusses bieten wird. Verkostet im Februar 2017. Verkostet auf dem Château, baut der 2014er Montrose auf das Versprechen auf, das er im Fass zeigte, mit herrlichen Brombeer-, Himbeer-, Zeder- und Orangensorbet-Düften, die extrem rein und raffiniert sind. Der Gaumen ist mittelkräftig mit geschmeidigen Tanninen, sehr präziser Säure und Schichten von knackigen schwarzen Früchten, die im Moment mit Vanille aus dem neuen Holz durchzogen sind. The 2016 Haut-Bailly was mightily impressive when tasted from barrel. Now. matured in 50% new oak and bottled at the end of April 2018 (they prefer to bottle before spring here). it has a very well defined bouquet of black fruit. graphite. crushed stone and light rose petal aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. This Haut-Bailly feels pure and classic in style. offering well-judged acidity and a sophisticated. quite tensile finish that lingers long in the mouth. I suspect this might close down in a year or two and deserves perhaps 8 to 10 years in bottle to show what it can really do. The best Haut-Bailly in the modern era? For certain.

Der Paleo 2016 Rosso aus der Region Bolgheri ist eine weitere Schöpfung im Le Macchiole Sortiment. Der Paleo Rosso 2016 von Le Macchiole ist ein aus 100% Cabernet Franc vinifizierter Rotwein, der stets ein paar Jahre brauch um zu voller Grösse aufzusteigen. Als erstes Weingut in der Bolgheri wagte es damals Le Macchiole einen reinen Cabernet Franc zu kreieren, den Paleo Rosso. Es passt sehr gut in die Philosophie des Weinguts Le Macchiole, rebsortenreine Weine zu erzeugen. Neben dem Scrio einem reinen Syrah und dem Messorio einem reinen Merlot ist der Paleo Rosso der dritte im Bunde, eben aus 100% Cabernet Franc. Sicherlich ist der Messorio der teuerste Wein im Portfolio, der wahre Star und auch der wohl wichtigste Wein bei Le Macchiole ist der Paleo Rosso. In einigen Jahren übertrumpft der Paleo dann auch den Messorio der oft mehr als das doppelte des Paleo kostet.

There is a gorgeous nuttiness to the 2015 Paleo. It is a highly aromatic expression of Cabernet Franc, with a bouquet of roses and some notes of red cherry. The vineyard team was careful in timing the harvest and fermentations to make sure the fruit did not come in too ripe and so they could maintain the natural freshness of the grapes. The oak used is moderately to highly toasted so they could get more of those nutty notes instead of the more common coffee or chocolate aromas we associate with barrique. It is aged for 22 months and the overall result is incredible.

This is a superb edition of the wine that. in my view, is the Macchiole flagship. The 2016 saw 30-35 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in cement and 18 months in French oak.

Pol Roger Champagner Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2015

Der Pol Roger Champagner Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2015 ist ein Champagner, der ausschließlich aus Chardonnays aus den Grands Crus der Côte des Blancs hergestellt wird: Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize und Oger. Diese Cuvée wird in begrenzten Mengen hergestellt und reift 6-7 Jahre lang in den Kellern des Hauses, bevor sie auf den Markt kommt.
Nach der Ernte werden die Trauben schnell und schonend gepresst. In der Kelterei wird ein erster Absetzvorgang durchgeführt, gefolgt von einem zweiten Absetzvorgang in der Kellerei bei einer kalten Temperatur (6°C) für 24 Stunden. Die alkoholische Gärung erfolgt bei niedriger Temperatur (18°C) in thermoregulierten Edelstahlbehältern, in denen die Rebsorten und Jahrgänge vor dem endgültigen Verschnitt getrennt vinifiziert werden. Die malolaktische Gärung wird bei allen Weinen des Hauses durchgeführt. Nach der Verkostung, dem Verschnitt und der Abfüllung wird der Wein in kühlen, 33 Meter unter der Erde gelegenen Kellern ausgebaut. Jede Flasche, so das Haus Pol Roger, wird vor dem Degorgieren und der Zugabe der Dosage auf traditionelle Weise von Hand gerührt. Die Weine ruhen dann mindestens drei Monate lang, bevor sie in den Versand gehen.
Seine blassgoldene Farbe mit silbernen Reflexen wird von einem feinen, eleganten cordon de mousse von unvergleichlicher Finesse gekrönt.
In der Nase entfalten sich Noten von getrockneten Früchten und Haselnuss, gemischt mit subtilen Anklängen von Zitrusfrüchten und exotischen Früchten, mit Luft kommen dann Aromen von gelben Früchten (Pfirsich und Aprikose) hinzu.
Im Mund ist er offen und verführt durch seine harmonische Ausgewogenheit zwischen Jugend und Reife. Er verströmt frische Aromen, die von Noten von Zitrusfrüchten unterstützt werden.
Die aromatische Persistenz unterstreicht einen schönen, filigranen Abgang.
Ein sehr verführerischer Champagner von großer Eleganz.
