Deep purple-black in color. it gives up opulent scents of Indian spices. menthol and plum preserves with a core of crème de cassis. baked cherries and raspberry pie plus a hint of sandalwood. “2018 was complicated to vinify because of the potentially high alcohols.” Laurent Dufau. Managing Director of Calon-Ségur and Capbern informed me. “Also. you had to be very gentle with extraction. Yields were pretty good here on average in 2018: 41 hectoliters per hectare. This year marks the final stages/completion of years of vineyard restructuring. new aging cellars and a gravity-fed vat room at Château Calon-Ségur. Most notably. they have been increasing vine density and slowly working on bringing more Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot on line. as was the blend traditionally. No doubt about it. quality at Calon-Ségur has been on an upward trajectory in recent years!

The 2018 Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new oak barriques. The alcohol weighs in at just over 14.5%. Sporting a deep purple-black color, it needs a lot of swirling to begin to unlock a powerful nose of crème de cassis, stewed plums, wild blueberries and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by nuances of Sichuan pepper, star anise, tree and clove oil, plus a waft of charcoal. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with taut, muscular black fruits and earthy layers, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully earthy. A very impressive behemoth, this is going to need a good seven to 10 years to truly show its stuff and should drink for a good 40 years and beyond.

Ein kraftvoller Vollkörper-Wein sowie ein perfekter Wein, der 2018 Château Montrose ist eine Endmischung aus 72 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Merlot und 6 % Cabernet Franc, die in 60 % neuen französischen Eichenfässern gereift wurde. Er prahlt mit einer tiefen lila Färbung sowie fantastischen Ebenen von Crème de Cassis und rauchigen Brombeerfrüchten und Noten von Tabak, Bleistiftmine, verbrannter Erde und Schokolade. Er ist tief, opulent und unglaublich konzentriert am Gaumen, mit keiner Mangel an Mittel-Palate-Tiefe, Tanninen oder Länge. Sehr sauberes und langes Finale. Für uns klar über 2014.2015 aber nicht an den Best Ever Meyney 2016. welchen wir noch vor der Primeurwoche im Glas hatten. da fehlt einfach ein gutes Stück.

The 2016 Calon Ségur is dense and radiant on the palate. just as it was from barrel. Even with all of its intensity. the 2016 is distinguished by its sense of freshness. lift and nuance. much of which comes from the 18% Cabernet Franc in the blend. Sweet floral. spice and minty notes add aromatic intensity to a core of sweet red cherry and plum fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure. but the tannins are sweet. silky and perfectly ripe. In short. the 2016 Calon Ségur is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Technical Director Vincent Millet and his team did a tremendous job with the 2016. Tasted three times.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. perhaps suppler than Cos d’Estournel and more velvety in terms of texture. A dash of cracked black pepper and allspice appears toward the finish. which fans out gloriously. A brilliant wine from François Millet and his team.

The 2019 Ormes de Pez has an intense bouquet of blackberry, bilberry and a touch of hoisin, but none of the smoky elements that I commented upon from the barrel sample last year. Nicely delineated and certainly less rustic than past vintages. The palate is finely tuned with a touch of bitter cherry on the entry, quite peppery, and a little stricter than I expected at the moment, leading to a granular, almost truffly finish.

This shows lots of spice, such as cloves and nutmeg, together with dark berries and cherries and some plums. It’s structured and relatively dense, with lovely length and beauty. Needs time to open and come together. 50% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon with cabernet franc and petit verdot. Lovely now. Try after 2024.

Coming from the Cazes team, the 2019 Château Ormes De Pez is gorgeous and shines in the vintage. Pure crème de cassis, mulberries, leafy herbs, Asian spices, and lead pencil all emerge on the nose, and this medium to full-bodied 2019 has the vintage’s pure, focused, elegant style while staying ripe, supple, and textured. The balance is spot on, and it's going to hit maturity in roughly 8-10 years and have two decades of prime drinking.

Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Gigondas Aux Lieux-Dits has a beautiful bouquet of blackberries, black cherries, ground pepper, and floral nuances. With obvious minerality and medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, it’s a terrific base cuvée that shines for its elegance and balance. It will keep for 15 years or more. This cuvée comes from eight different parcels and is partially destemmed and aged in foudre and amphora. The blend wasn’t specified.

ERNTE & VINIFIKATION:
Manuelle Ernte in Kisten mit Sortierung im Weinberg, gefolgt von einer zweiten auf dem Sortiertisch. Teilweises Entrappen. Der Anteil der entrappten Trauben wird je nach Jahrgang und Parzelle festgelegt. Gravity Vating mit absolutem Respekt vor der Unversehrtheit der Trauben.
