The 2018 Phelan Segur is another in a strong series of wines from this re-born property. Deep and persistent on the palate. the 2018 has a lot to offer. Dark cherry. plum. graphite. menthol. spice and licorice all build in a super-expressive. delineated yet dense Saint-Estèphe loaded with personality. The 2018 finishes with serious intensity and structure. Technical Director Fabrice Bacquey opted for cooler macerations and short cuvaisons. especially for the Merlots. as the fruit was especially rich and the wines extracted easily. while the Cabernets were fermented more or less as usual. Yields were 49 hectoliters per hectare. a bit higher than the 20-year average of 44 and inline with other recent vintages such as 2015. 2016 and 2017. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot. Tasted three times.

Easily the greatest example from this château that I've tasted, the 2018 Château Calon Ségur checks in as 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot aged 20 months in new French oak. This dense purple-hued beauty boasts a stunning nose of blackcurrants, crème de cassis, tobacco, baking spices, chocolate, and cedarwood. With full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, gorgeous tannins, and one seriously long finish, it hits that palate with 15% alcohol, yet you wouldn't know it by tasting it, and the wine is perfectly balanced, has incredible purity of fruit, and stays fresh and lively, with a clean finish. This magical Saint-Estèphe can be drunk any time over the coming 20+ years.

The 2018 Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new oak barriques. The alcohol weighs in at just over 14.5%. Sporting a deep purple-black color, it needs a lot of swirling to begin to unlock a powerful nose of crème de cassis, stewed plums, wild blueberries and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by nuances of Sichuan pepper, star anise, tree and clove oil, plus a waft of charcoal. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with taut, muscular black fruits and earthy layers, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully earthy. A very impressive behemoth, this is going to need a good seven to 10 years to truly show its stuff and should drink for a good 40 years and beyond.

Ein kraftvoller Vollkörper-Wein sowie ein perfekter Wein, der 2018 Château Montrose ist eine Endmischung aus 72 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Merlot und 6 % Cabernet Franc, die in 60 % neuen französischen Eichenfässern gereift wurde. Er prahlt mit einer tiefen lila Färbung sowie fantastischen Ebenen von Crème de Cassis und rauchigen Brombeerfrüchten und Noten von Tabak, Bleistiftmine, verbrannter Erde und Schokolade. Er ist tief, opulent und unglaublich konzentriert am Gaumen, mit keiner Mangel an Mittel-Palate-Tiefe, Tanninen oder Länge. Er erinnert mich ein wenig an eine frischere Version des 2003ers, obwohl 2018 mehr Cabernet Sauvignon und weniger Merlot enthalten sind. Die Cuvee für den Jahrgang 2018 besteht aus 42% Cabernet Sauvignon. 40% Merlot und 18% Petit Verdot. Volle Konzentration mit leichter Aufhellung. Die Nase ist sehr betörend und verführerisch. reife Frucht. süssliche Würze. geröstete Nüsse. Sahnemokka. Am Gaumen super balanciert. dennoch stoffig und kompakt. überhaupt nicht anstrengend. Sehr sauberes und langes Finale. Für uns klar über 2014.2015 aber nicht an den Best Ever Meyney 2016. welchen wir noch vor der Primeurwoche im Glas hatten. da fehlt einfach ein gutes Stück.

The 2018 offers striking immediacy, but also has enough structure to develop well in bottle for 15-20 years, maybe more. The 2018 Meyney is a wine of immense pleasure. The 2018 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur is a blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Sauvignon (14.9% alcohol). It is anticipated to age for 17 months in barriques. 30% new. Deep purple-black in color. it gives up opulent scents of Indian spices. menthol and plum preserves with a core of crème de cassis. baked cherries and raspberry pie plus a hint of sandalwood. “2018 was complicated to vinify because of the potentially high alcohols.” Laurent Dufau. Managing Director of Calon-Ségur and Capbern informed me. “Also. you had to be very gentle with extraction. You had to be soft. so as not to extract too much. The alcohol percentage of the Merlot was concerning—some came in at 16% potential alcohol! And the Cabernet Franc this year was amazing on this terroir.” Merlot was picked from September 19 to 25. The Cabernets came in September 26 to October 5. Petit Verdot came in on October 8th. Yields were pretty good here on average in 2018: 41 hectoliters per hectare. This year marks the final stages/completion of years of vineyard restructuring. new aging cellars and a gravity-fed vat room at Château Calon-Ségur. Most notably. they have been increasing vine density and slowly working on bringing more Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot on line. as was the blend traditionally. No doubt about it. quality at Calon-Ségur has been on an upward trajectory in recent years!
