Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Catena Zapata
Eines der grossen Weinschnäppchen aus Argentinien

Luis Gutierrez August 2015:
The 2014 Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon has more fruit from the Uco Valley to compensate for the slightly warmer growing season. 30% of the grapes had semi-carbonic maceration and 10% of the wine was in contact with inner staves. It's a ripe, hedonistic Cabernet with creaminess and plenty of spicy, peppery aromas over a core of ripe plums and blackberries. The lush palate has a velvety texture and pronounced flavors that is approachable and easy to drink. 1.5 million bottles of this wine.

Parker / VerkostungsnotizLuis Gutierrez August 2015:
They increased the volume of wine fermented in cement for the 2014 Alamos Malbec. The vintage was somehow warmer than 2013 and you feel riper fruit here; there's more weight of fruit in the palate, not as agile as the 2013 (which today is the benchmark). Overall, it is a very pleasant, ripe Malbec. They produce close to 10 million bottles of this wine, so you shouldn't have problems finding a bottle as they sell it in 56 countries in the world.

Altosur Malbec 2015 Medoza Finca Sophenia

Catena Zapata Catena Chardonnay 2014

Luiz Gutierrez August 2015

The 2014 Chardonnay is a blend of three vineyards. The vineyards are divided into lots that are harvested at different times: Agrelo at 3,117 foot elevation, Villa Bastías at 3,675 foot elevation and Gualtallary at 4,757 foot elevation. Each vineyard is vinified differently and aged separately. The wines are blended at the end before bottling. The nose is subtly oaked with white fruit and floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and has very nice acidity which makes the wine not only fresher, but also longer and more mineral. This is the freshest of all the vintages of this Chardonnay, and the change in vineyards is really noticeable. Super! 350,000 bottles produced.

Catena Zapata Catena Malbec 2014

Luiz Gutierrez August 2015

As I saw with the Cabernet, the 2013 Catena Malbec also feels fresher than the 2012. It is produced with fruit from Valle de Uco and some 20% from the Luján de Cuyo zone that fermented in a mixture of cement and stainless steel, and partly matured in barrels for some 10 months. The nose is full of violets and black cherries, and is quite perfumed. The palate has lively acidity that makes it extremely fresh, long, pleasant and easy to dink, and it cleanses your palate with the mineral-driven finish. A textbook Malbec to buy by the case. Drink or keep. This has to be one of the best vintages of this popular Malbec. The production figures are mind-boggling, as there are over one million bottles of this wine, so it should be quite easy to find.

The 2013 Lunta Malbec is a blend from old Malbec vineyards planted in 1928 in Mayor Drummond in Luján de Cuyo. Some 50-60% of the wine matured in well-seasoned French oak barriques for one year after fermenting in stainless steel. The nose is completely fruit-driven with cherries, raspberries and also flowers accented by faint notes of spices. The palate is fresh and vibrant with flavors of crushed berries and distant hints form the oak, in a harmonious way. This is a very tasty, classic Malbec that feels polished. 60,000 bottles produced.

El Enemigo 2013
NEU

Weinbeschreibung:

Catena Zapata Catena Alta Chardonnay 2011
92 Parker Punkte - TOP - Value

The 2011 Catena Alta Chardonnay is sourced from the Adrianna (Gualtallary), and Domingo (named after Nicolas Catena’s father, and is located in Villa Bastias in Tupungato at 1,120 meters altitude) vineyards. Despite 2011 being cooler the wine is 14% alcohol, riper and fresher (Acidity (grams/liter) 7.30, pH: 3.22). They always use the same vineyards and the same part of the vineyards for the Alta range, mostly from Adrianna and a little from Domingo. This is golden-colored, and a little more tropical, more marked by the oak, with a toasty and somehow honeyed character already developing (some 6-7% of the grapes developed botrytis). The palate is medium-bodied and round, with a pleasant bitter finish. More exuberant, rounder. Drink 2014-2019.

Mendel Wines Malbec 2013 Mendoza

"This wine has balance and finesse with blueberry, blackberry and some walnut character. Full body, fine tannins and a beautiful finish."

Luis Gutierrez August 2015

The 2013 Malbec is produced with the grapes from an ungrafted vineyard planted in 1928 in Mayor Drummond in Luján de Cuyo at some 980 meters altitude and another one in Perdriel. After hand-sorting the grapes, the wine macerated in 50- and 80-hectoliter tanks for three weeks. It matured in a combination of new, second- and third-use French oak barrels for 12-14 months. It has a lactic nose intermixed with aromas of flowers and fresh fruit. 2013 was a cooler year and the fruit had more malic acid, which might be the explanation for the lactic character I found here. It's also more floral and shows less aromas of plums so often found in warmer vintages. The medium-bodied palate shows good balance and is juicy with sweet tannins that make it very accessible. You feel the hand of a winemaker in this textbook Malbec. It should go an extra mile in bottle with the freshness of the year. 60,000 bottles produced.

Mendel Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Mendoza
93 Parker Punkte
Luis Gutierrez August 2015

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a vineyard in Perdriel, in the classic quarter of Luján de Cuyo. It matured in French oak barrels (new and used) for some 12 to 14 months. There was a very acute note of blood and iron, call it mineral if you want, that is very distinct (I also detected it in a wine that had part of this grapes in the blend). Underneath you have the textbook Cabernet aromas, the herbal side but with good ripeness, with black and blue fruit. The palate is very sleek, with very fine tannins, softer than your average Cabernet. Roberto de la Mota looks for more elegance achieved with the vinification in small tanks and extracting early on (before the alcohol can extract harsher tannins). The soils of Perdriel in the bed of the Mendoza River are quite shallow and with lots of stones, also provide this quality of tannins. Great classical Mendoza Cabernet. He compares 2013 to 2010. 10,000 bottles produced.

The 2009 Finca Remota is 100% Malbec that received extended hang time and was sourced from the estate’s coolest parcel. It was aged for 12 months in 100% new French oak, after which 50% of the wine spent an additional 8 months in new oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it sports an aromatic array dominated by exotic spices, sandalwood, incense, lavender, black cherry, and blueberry. Dense, rich, and loaded, this beautifully proportioned offering has the structure to evolve for another 3-4 years and will deliver prime drinking through 2024+.

Verkostungsnotiz des Wine Advacate für den Catena Zapata Nicolas Catena Zapata Jahrgang 2010:

Doctor Nicolas Catena always liked Cabernet Sauvignon so the wine that carries his name has a greater percentage of the noble Bordeaux grape. The 2010 Nicolas Catena Zapata is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Malbec sourced from La Piramide, Domingo, Adrianna and Nicasia. The fresh and balanced 2010 produced good ripeness of the fruit but the acidity was also great and the wine finished with 6.5 grams of acidity and a natural pH of 3.5, as the grapes are selected from cold soils. The first vintage was 1997, but this has to be one of their finest. This has the intensity of the Catena Alta Cabernet and the verticality and austerity of the Adrianna Malbec. It has very good acidity and intensity, while it has some velvety tannins. For a minute I was trying to remember the varietals as the sense of place, the freshness and the earthy sensations clearly take over. A superb bottle of wine. This is a wine to age. Drink 2016-2023.

Catena is almost equivalent to Argentine quality wine, as Nicolas Catena was the true pioneer and is still the most important wine personality in Argentina. Bodega Catena Zapata has been owned by the Catena family since 1902. Of course I paid a lot of attention to their wines and I tasted with Laura Catena and winemaker Alejandro Vigil both in Madrid and Mendoza, visited their vineyards in Gualtallary and jumped into different pits in the soil to see the differences in terroir. I was able to discuss multiple topics (including Sherry wine, as it seems to be one of his passions) with Nicolas Catena, which was a real pleasure. They are so forward thinking and smart as they are still at the head of quality wines in the country, doing amazing research and never resting on their laurels. Alejandro Vigil is one of the most passionate and intuitive winemakers on Earth, and he’s also completely crazy about wine, always wanting to experiment, to question the established ideas and to learn more. We need more of these champions in the wine world. The result can be no other than superb wines, with some groundbreaking whites that could compete with the finest white Burgundies (I’d love to do a blind tasting one day) and the most amazing Malbecs you can think of, and everything in between. To explain some of the many things I saw and learned from them, one of the main objectives is to improve the knowledge of their vineyards, to break the macro-units of terroir into smaller parts, smaller zones, and even vineyards, or even parts of vineyards. This allows them to do different viticulture, watering, harvesting and vinification even to a few rows of vines. For one given vineyard they might have 200 different lots, which is not a picture of the terroir, but a FILM of the terroir, which gives the wines enormous complexity and for them it creates an even higher complexity, for the blends! The result of this way of working is hundreds (or was it thousands? I think it was.) of micro-vinifications in every vintage. The amazing blending skills cannot then be forgotten. Nicolas Catena has three offspring: Laura, Ernesto and Adrianna. Laura is a doctor in San Francisco but is already at the helm of the family winery. She has time to travel the world showing their wines and to write books about Argentine wine. Ernesto has different projects and is enchanted by biodynamic practices. Adrianna is the youngest, still studying in the UK, but already involved, as she shares ownership with Alejandro Vigil in the Aleanna winery (also included in this report). Various vineyards are named after members of the Catena family. If we use Laura as the pivotal point, Angelica was her grandmother, and Nicasia was the mother of Angelica, so she was Laura Catena’s great-grandmother. Both Nicasia and Angelica are names of vineyards you might see on their labels. Adrianna Vineyard is, of course, named after Nicolas’ younger daughter and was the first vineyard ever planted in Gualtallary. Doctor Nicolas Catena told me that he planted there out of fluke and then they realized he had discovered a treasure of a place, but I believe that what he calls “fluke” is really intuition. Coincidences like that do not really exist, you know. Gualtallary is nowadays recognized as one of the highest potential wine regions, not only in Mendoza, but in the whole of Argentina. The combination of high altitude and calcium carbonate-rich soils produces wines that are both intense and fresh, true to their origin. To continue with the experiments, I tasted two Malbecs from similar soils (same depth) all from Adrianna on chalky soils, and they experimented with different density. They have a plot with 6,000 plants per hectare and another one with 12,000 plants. The version with high plantation is so much more focused and vertical. One other experience was to see the influence of deep soils on Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in Nicasia. Angelica is the historical vineyard, in Lunlunta, where they did one sweet wine with the green-harvested bunches that were not cut fully, but were left hanging on the vine. Those bunches were harvested one month later than normal, and the must fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts that fermented up to 17.8% alcohol and left 42 grams of sugar. Unfortified, it was a delicious experience. That’s just a sample of what keeps them busy at Catena, as they are also experimenting and formulating different hypothesis that have to be demonstrated relative to the orientation of the plantings (traditionally north-south, because of the irrigation by gravity), width of the canopy, the influence of height of the plants, how to irrigate – you name it! The groundbreaking Adrianna Vineyard wine was produced in 2004 for the first time, from their grapes in Gualtallary in Tupungato, but the big change arrived with the 2006 when they changed everything. It was a very cold vintage and all of a sudden the vision was that for cold wines they had to stop using barriques and started using old 400- and 500-liter old barrels instead, which were previously used for transportation only. 2006 turned out to be a superb vintage, and they increased the knowledge about their micro-plots in the vineyard, like their cuartel 5. This wine is more subtle than other Malbecs, less obvious, with more subtle flowers, and violets mixed with chalk. It was in 2006 when Alejandro Vigil realized that Malbec had to be treated and fermented like a Pinot Noir rather than like Cabernet Sauvignon, which was what the majority of people –including him- were doing. That’s when the Catena wines really took off, and they have not looked back. Finally, let’s take a simplified look at the different ranges of wines before I go into each individual wine: the Catena range is a blend of high altitude estate vineyards. The Catena Alta range is what they call a row selection in the Catena family vineyards. The Catena Zapata wines are the top of the range, and they are a plant-by-plant selection from their vineyards. It might sound crazy (and it probably is), but that’s what it is.

The 2009 Zapata is from selected vines marked by a red sash in order to raise the wine with meticulous care. It is 10% whole cluster and 90% whole berry fruit that is aged in 80% new French oak for 24 months. It is pieced together from a mind-boggling 210 separate row micro-vinifications of multifarious lots and harvest times and is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Malbec. It has a spellbinding bouquet that exudes minerality, as if crushed stones had been sprinkled into the black fruit. With continued aeration, there are scents of oyster shell and black olive. The palate is full-bodied, with immense structure and backbone. The acidity is beautifully judged with filigree tannins that render the finish so elegant and refined, with notes of blackberry, soy, black plum and that stony aftertaste. Magnificent. The 2009 Malbec Argentino is a blend of the vineyards of Adrianna and Nicasia and is 20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry fruit. The former is co-fermented with Viognier and the latter co-fermented with Cabernet Franc. It is aged in French oak barrels, of which 60% are new. It has a more opulent bouquet than the individual blends, with dark cherries, iodine, minerals and blueberry that are all beautifully defined. The palate has a dense, weighty entry with layers of ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed stone and a touch of graphite. Gran Enemigo El Cepillo 2012
NEU

Weinbeschreibung:
