Chateau de Fieuzal

Das inmitten des Weinbaugebietes der Graves, der historischen Wiege der Bordeauxweine gelegene Chateau de Fieuzal verdankt seinen Namen der Familie Fieuzal, in deren Besitz es sich bis 1851 befand. Heute ist dieser Cru Classe de Graves Eigentum von Brenda und Lochlann Quinn und ebenso berühmt für die Finesse seiner Weissweine wie für die Opulenz seiner Rotweine. Die Aufmerksamkeit, die dem Terroir geschenkt wird, ermöglicht es dem Chateau de Fieuzal exzellente Weine zu erzeugen und gleichzeitig ein Naturerbe von ausserordentlicher Vielfalt zu bewahren. Im Sinne eines gewissen Luxus nach französicher Art. werden alle alltäglichen Arbeiten auf traditionelle Weise durchgeführt. Die Rebstöcke werden individuell gepflegt und die Trauben mit extremer Sorgfalt überwacht, um Weine zu produzieren, die die Exzellenz dieser einzigartigen Weinberge wiederspiegelt. Eine anspruchsvolle Philosophie für den Genuss aller Weinliebhaber.

The 2013 De Fieuzal Blanc has quite a candied nose with hints of brown sugar lurking behind that veneer of tropical fruit. For Fieuzal I find this refreshingly vivacious in style. That comes through on the palate with nectarine and peach skin, a keen line of acidity with a slightly overworked finish that is more phenolic than its peers. It needs 3 or 4 years in bottle to really show its mettle, though instinct tells me that it will be worth waiting for.

The cumulative rainfall at Château Fieuzal was only 385 millimeters in 2022, compared to 753 millimeters in 2021 and 743 millimeters in 2020. But this did not prevent Stephen Carrier and his team from making a fresh and energetic 2022 de Fieuzal, bursting with aromas of violet, iris, menthol and crunchy wild berries mingled with hints of coniferous forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, it's pristinely balanced and beautifully layered, exhibiting a vibrant palate that's deep, tensile and elegant, concluding with a mouthwateringly mineral finish. This estate is achieving things no one would have thought possible a decade ago.

On the medium-bodied palate, initially you notice the freshness in the ripe, sweet, cherries, with their elegance, lift and purity. There is a symmetry, and vibrancy in the fruits, finishing with a shot of licorice, cocoa, and plums that stick with you. The wine blends 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. 13.2% ABV. Yields were 32 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2025-2045.
