Coming from dismal yields of 12.5 hectoliters per hectare, the 2020 Château Haut-Brisson is shockingly good and another brilliant Right Bank that's going to represent a tremendous value. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in just 35% new French oak, it has a sensational perfume of red and black cherries, leafy tobacco, chocolate, lead pencil shavings, and liquid violet-like nuances. Full-bodied, concentrated, and flawlessly balanced, it has ultra-fine tannins, remarkable purity, and a great finish. This wine comes from an 18-hectare vineyard that was purchased by Peter Kwok in 1997, only to be sold in 2020 to Bordeaux native Stéphane Schinazi. The soils here are a mix of fine gravel and granular, quartz-rich silt atop a deep clay subsoil. The farming has been certified organic since 2010, vinification spans just over three weeks in stainless steel, and the wine sees malolactic fermentation in tank and four months on lees before being moved into 35% new French oak, 35% second-fill, and the balance in third-fill barrels.

Managing tannins is one of the lines that needed walking in 2020, and the warmer soils of Quinault compared to Cheval needed particular care. You find some traces of the solar nature of the summer on the nose, with eucalyptus, black pepper and rosemary spice, but there is freshness on the palate, well balanced and with density to the blackberry and black cherry fruits, finishing up with again the eucalyptus that is found in the aromatics, and a generous kick of spice. This is tightly structured, it is expertly handled but I would suggest looking to the 2019. Harvest September 3 to 23. 10 days over 30°C during that time.

It's another true vin de garde from the team of Nicolas Thienpont (Stéphane Derenoncourt also consults) that readers will love to have in their cellar.

Ein kleines, exklusives Weingut mit Kultstatus aus früheren Zeiten, als intensive Kellerarbeit mit 100 % neuem Holz angesagt waren. Der Wein bleibt dennoch ein begehrtes Sammlerstück. Der Jahrgang 2020 präsentiert sich reichhaltig und üppig – mit intensiven Noten von schwarzer Lakritze, Brombeeren und Maulbeeren. Er bietet enormen Druck am Gaumen, begleitet von süßer, schwarzer Kirsche. Trotz seiner Fülle wirkt er nicht klebrig, eher kraftvoll und fast schon üppig sinnlich. Die Nase ist verführerisch und beeindruckend. Am Gaumen zeigt er sich tiefdunkel, dicht und kraftvoll, mit unglaublichem Nachdruck. Und dennoch bewahrt der Wein eine gewisse Eleganz – überraschend fein für seine intensive Art. Er ist ein Wein mit beeindruckender Präsenz, braucht aber Zeit, um seine volle Finesse zu entfalten. Ein Wein, der einen staunen lässt. Vielleicht nicht der eleganteste Tropfen des Jahres, dafür aber ein monumentales Erlebnis. Dicht, opulent und überwältigend – ein Wein, der Eindruck hinterlässt.

Dies ist ein herrlicher Jahrgang 2020 mit so reiner Frucht von Johannisbeeren und Brombeeren sowie dunkler Schokolade. Er ist voll und vielschichtig und entfaltet sich im Glas zu einer schönen Schicht feiner, samtiger Tannine, die hell und zitrusartig sind. Knackig. Er öffnet sich wirklich und zeigt so viele Facetten. Spektakulär. Am besten nach 2027 genießen.

Der 2020 Croix de Labrie zeigt sich in einem tiefen purpur-schwarzen Farbton und entfaltet im Glas flamboyante Aromen von Sandelholz, roten Rosen, gemahlenen Nelken und einer Zedernholzkiste. Darunter verbirgt sich ein Kern aus geschmorten schwarzen Pflaumen, Morello-Kirschen und Boysenbeeren, ergänzt durch einen Hauch von Bouquet garni. Der Gaumen ist mittel- bis vollmundig und verfügt über ein solides Rückgrat aus festen, reifen, runden Tanninen sowie viel Frische, die die kräftigen schwarzen Früchte schön umrahmt und mit einem langen, würzigen Abgang endet. Der 50 Jahre alte Weinberg von Axelle und Pierre Courdurié erstreckt sich über 3,79 Hektar und besteht aus einer Mischung aus Ton- und Kalkböden, wobei ein Teil in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes und ein anderer Teil am Fuß des Pavie-Hangs in Saint-Émilion liegt.

Der Grand Vin 2020 Château Croix De Labrie ist hervorragend und der beste Wein, den ich bisher von diesem Weingut verkostet habe. Tief violett in der Farbe, zeigt er eine fast likörartige Mineralität, die an Kalkstein erinnert, kombiniert mit reifen schwarzen Kirschen, Boysenbeeren, Frühlingsblüten und Grafit. Vollmundig, mit beeindruckender Fruchtfülle und samtiger Textur, zeigt er süße, perfekt gereifte Tannine und eine bemerkenswerte Reinheit. Das Holz ist perfekt eingebunden, verleiht dem Wein sowohl reichhaltige Fülle als auch eine beeindruckende Präzision und Klarheit. Dieser großartige Saint-Émilion wird bereits in 3-4 Jahren trinkreif sein und sich über zwei Jahrzehnte weiterentwickeln. Zweimal verkostet – beide Male mit konsistenten Eindrücken.

The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of exotic spices and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with vibrant acids and beautifully polished, chalky tannins. Pure and precise, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. This beautifully constructed wine communicates the essence of this superb limestone terroir, and it will be worth a special effort to track down and cellar.

Another brilliant Saint-Emilion, the 2020 Château Canon actually reminds me of the 2019 with its pure, elegant, yet concentrated profile. Based on 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, it reveals a deep ruby hue as well as classic upper plateau notes of perfumed red and black fruits (black raspberries, darker cherries), wildflowers, graphite, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, perfectly integrated tannins and acidity, and flawless overall balance. As with the 2019, it's not the blockbuster style of the 2015, but it’s lively, elegant, and pure class. It needs 7-8 years of bottle age to hit maturity and will have 2-3 decades of overall longevity.

Chateau Lassegue 2020 Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Das Chateau Lassegue pirscht sich langsam aber sicher immer weiter in die Spitze des Saint Emilion. Wir verfolgen diesen wert nun schon ein paar Jahre, aber der richtige Durchbruch kam ganz klar mit den Jahren 2019 und 2020. Nicht zu reden von einem bärenstarken 2021iger im Kontext des Jahrgangs und der Schwierigkeiten welche der Jahrgang übrg hielt. Solange wir alle gespannt auf die weiteren Episoden des Chateau LAssegue warten, geniessen wir doch in vollen Zügen den JAhrgang 2020, denn dieser ist eine wahre Wonne. Üppig und dicht bei gleichzeitiger Frische, das ist aller Achtung wert.

Petit Figeac 2020 Saint Emilion

Der Petit Figeac ist eine kleine Rarität weil er in dem JG 2020 nur in sehr kleinen Mengen produziert wurde. Der Zweitwein von Chateau Figeac besteht aus Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon und Merlot, im Prinzip so wie auch der Grand Vin auf Figeac. Für den Petit Figeac werden aber auch die jüngeren Reben verwendet, meistens zeigen sich diese fruchtbetonter und vitaler. Auf Chateau Figeac wurde ja in den letzten Jahren sehr viel geändert inklusiver einer komplett neuen Kellerei, aber eben auch im Weinberg. Die Qualität des Petit Figeac ist wirklich stark angestiegen in den letzten Jahren, hier profitiert der "Kleine" von dem stetigen Streben der Besitzer nach dem besten und vor allem der höchsten Klassifizierung die ja in 2022 erreicht wurde. Man ist nun mit Chateau Pavie der einzige Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe A, nachdem Cheval Blanc, Ausone und auch das Chateau Angelus sich haben nicht mehr klassifizieren lassen. Der Jahrgang 2020 führt beim Petit Figeac quasi zu einer Grand Vin Qualität und zeigt sich im Glas mit einer verführerischen Kirschfrucht, etwas Mokka und zarte rote Paprike gesellt sich hinzu, das wirklich angenehme feine Tannin läd schon zum früheren Geniessen ein. Hier gilt auch wieder die goldene Regel, in grossen Jahren kleine oder eben Zweitweine kaufen, erst Recht wenn Figeac auf dem Etikett steht.

I loved the 2020 Petit-Figeac, the second wine from Château Figeac. The 2020 Figeac is the finest wine that has been bottled to date at this estate since its renaissance began a decade ago. Wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries and raspberries mingled with cigar wrapper, pencil shavings, licorice and black truffles, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a suave, harmonious profile, vibrant acids, and beautifully refined structuring tannins. This sapid, complex wine represents the essence of this great terroir. Two years after extensive soil studies of the estate were carried out, and the first growing season to see cover crops used in the vineyards year-round, the 2020 benefited from more coherently demarcated parcels and more precise élevage, which taken together help to account for its edge over the excellent 2019.

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Figeac checks in as 37% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 18 months in new barrels. They also utilize plenty of press wine, and the 2020 has 8% in the blend. Straight-up awesome aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, iron, spring flowers, and an almost bloody, salty character emerge from the glass, and it's full-bodied, with a seamless mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and absolutely perfectly integrated oak. It's still tight and reserved, which is certainly the vintage, so do your best to hide these in the cellar. It should hit the early stages of its prime drinking window in 8-10 years and will have 30+ of overall longevity. It will unquestionably flirt with perfection at maturity.

It turns quite citric toward the end, and although it might not quite deliver the persistence of the 2018, this is another fine La Serre that should give 12–15 years of drinking pleasure.
