Coming from dismal yields of 12.5 hectoliters per hectare, the 2020 Château Haut-Brisson is shockingly good and another brilliant Right Bank that's going to represent a tremendous value. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in just 35% new French oak, it has a sensational perfume of red and black cherries, leafy tobacco, chocolate, lead pencil shavings, and liquid violet-like nuances. Full-bodied, concentrated, and flawlessly balanced, it has ultra-fine tannins, remarkable purity, and a great finish. This wine comes from an 18-hectare vineyard that was purchased by Peter Kwok in 1997, only to be sold in 2020 to Bordeaux native Stéphane Schinazi. The soils here are a mix of fine gravel and granular, quartz-rich silt atop a deep clay subsoil. The farming has been certified organic since 2010, vinification spans just over three weeks in stainless steel, and the wine sees malolactic fermentation in tank and four months on lees before being moved into 35% new French oak, 35% second-fill, and the balance in third-fill barrels.

Managing tannins is one of the lines that needed walking in 2020, and the warmer soils of Quinault compared to Cheval needed particular care. You find some traces of the solar nature of the summer on the nose, with eucalyptus, black pepper and rosemary spice, but there is freshness on the palate, well balanced and with density to the blackberry and black cherry fruits, finishing up with again the eucalyptus that is found in the aromatics, and a generous kick of spice. This is tightly structured, it is expertly handled but I would suggest looking to the 2019. Harvest September 3 to 23. 10 days over 30°C during that time.

Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new barrels (the balance is in second- and third-fill oak), it offers a full-bodied, incredibly pure, balanced style revealing subtle oak, terrific darker, almost blue fruits, lots of chocolate, leafy herb and mineral nuances, and gorgeous tannins. It's worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades.

Petit Figeac 2020 Saint Emilion

Der Petit Figeac ist eine kleine Rarität weil er in dem JG 2020 nur in sehr kleinen Mengen produziert wurde. Der Zweitwein von Chateau Figeac besteht aus Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon und Merlot, im Prinzip so wie auch der Grand Vin auf Figeac. Für den Petit Figeac werden aber auch die jüngeren Reben verwendet, meistens zeigen sich diese fruchtbetonter und vitaler. Auf Chateau Figeac wurde ja in den letzten Jahren sehr viel geändert inklusiver einer komplett neuen Kellerei, aber eben auch im Weinberg. Die Qualität des Petit Figeac ist wirklich stark angestiegen in den letzten Jahren, hier profitiert der "Kleine" von dem stetigen Streben der Besitzer nach dem besten und vor allem der höchsten Klassifizierung die ja in 2022 erreicht wurde. Man ist nun mit Chateau Pavie der einzige Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe A, nachdem Cheval Blanc, Ausone und auch das Chateau Angelus sich haben nicht mehr klassifizieren lassen. Der Jahrgang 2020 führt beim Petit Figeac quasi zu einer Grand Vin Qualität und zeigt sich im Glas mit einer verführerischen Kirschfrucht, etwas Mokka und zarte rote Paprike gesellt sich hinzu, das wirklich angenehme feine Tannin läd schon zum früheren Geniessen ein. Hier gilt auch wieder die goldene Regel, in grossen Jahren kleine oder eben Zweitweine kaufen, erst Recht wenn Figeac auf dem Etikett steht.

I loved the 2020 Petit-Figeac, the second wine from Château Figeac. Sehr lange Plateauphase in der Struktur, vibrierend vor Spannung, und dann doch auch mit einer cremigen Unterlage, die alles einbettet und abrundet. Große Länge.

Eine kurze Einschätzung zu dem Chateau Cantin 2022:

Leider habe ich dieses Chateau nicht bei den Primeur Proben verkosten können, aber ich möchte gerne auf die besondere Gelegenheit hinweisen, in Zeiten von spürbar steigenden Preisen ist es anscheinend trotzdem möglich einen sehr guten Einkauf zu machen. Aus der Region Saint Christophe des Bardes aus der so viele Super Weine in den letzten Jahren hervorkamen liegt auch eben dieses Weingut Cantin. Wenn man also zwischen den Weingütern Chateau Tour Saint Christophe, Chateau Laroque (93-94 Punkte Suckling) und Chateau Mangot (94-95 Punkte Suckling) eine Linie ziehen würde könnte man von Mangot aus über Chateau Cantin wieder zurück nach Tour Saint Christophe (95-96 Punkte Suckling) einen Bereich eingrenzen und man würde schnell feststellen, das es ganz logisch ist, dass auch das Chateau Cantin ein wunderbares Terroir besitzt und einfach teil des Epizentrums für smart Buys in Saint Emilion ist. Was macht Chateau Cantin 2022 so reizvoll? Nachdem das Chateau Mangot, Tour Saint Christophe sowie Chateau Laroque die Preise um gute 20 Prozent angehoben haben ist bei Cantin ein Preis unter 20€ en Primeur noch immer möglich, einfach sagenhaft günstig für so eine tolle Bewertung bei James Suckling. Sie haben recht, die Verkostungsnotizen von eben diesem James Suckling könnten etwas ausführlicher sein, aber er liegt oft in seiner vergleichenden Einschätzung gar nicht so verkehrt, beherzigt man dies nun, ist eigentlich Kaufalarm ausgelöst. Château Peymouton ist Teil des Anwesens von Château Laroque, einem historischen Grand Cru Classé von Saint-Émilion, das nur 3,5 km östlich des mittelalterlichen Dorfes liegt.

Château Laroque, eines der größten Anwesen der Appellation, stammt aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Dank seiner strategischen Lage auf einem Kalksteinplateau mit Blick auf das Tal des Flusses Dordogne fungierte es als wichtige Verteidigungsfestung für das nahe gelegene Dorf. Der Weinberg selbst wurde im 18. Jahrhundert gepflanzt. Die Familie Beaumartin erwarb das Anwesen 1935 und begann in den 1960er Jahren mit der Modernisierung des Weinbergs und der Weinbereitung.

1996 wurde Château Laroque für 27 Hektar seines Weinbergs der Grand Cru Classé-Status verliehen, während die restlichen 31 Hektar einen neuen Wein hervorbrachten: Château Peymouton, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

Château Peymouton liegt auf einem Hochplateau des Anwesens (80-100 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel), das teilweise aus einer dünnen Schicht reichen Tons über Kalkstein und teilweise aus tiefem, dickem rotem Ton besteht. Diese Böden verleihen dem Wein Dichte und Struktur, der jedoch die Eleganz des Kalksteins bewahrt.

Château Peymouton wird von demselben Team geführt und genießt die gleiche Sorgfalt und Aufmerksamkeit wie Château Laroque. Die Weinlese erfolgt nach der individuellen Reife der einzelnen Parzellen und der Wein wird schonend vinifiziert, wobei besondere Sorgfalt auf den Ausdruck frischer Frucht gelegt wird.

Die Weine von Château Peymouton bringen die Eleganz dieses historischen Terroirs in einem lebendigen, fruchtbetonten Stil zum Ausdruck, der bereits nach wenigen Jahren Lagerung genossen werden kann.

Chateau Tronquoy 2019 Saint Estephe

William Kelley: Wie ich Anfang dieses Jahres schrieb, hat sich der 2019er Tronquoy-Lalande wunderschön entwickelt und zeigt sich weiterhin sehr gut. Er bietet einladende Aromen von wilden Beeren, Gewürzen, Rosenblättern und Cassis. Mittel bis vollmundig, vielschichtig und sinnlich, mit lebendigen Säuren, reifen Tanninen und einem langen, lebhaften Abgang, erinnert er an einen etwas sonnenverwöhnteren und extrovertierten Bruder des großartigen 2016er Jahrgangs an dieser Adresse. Wie ich Anfang dieses Jahres schrieb, ist Tronquoy-Lalande ein Weingut, das viel bekannter sein sollte. Dies war der zweite Weinberg, der in Saint-Estèphe bepflanzt wurde, nach dem Clos von Calon-Ségur, aber sein royalistischer Besitzer nahm aufgrund seiner Ablehnung von Napoléon III. nicht an der Klassifikation von 1855 teil. Der Weinberg selbst besteht aus einem einzigen 30 Hektar großen Block auf einem acht Meter tiefen Kiesrücken direkt hinter den Châteaux Meyney und Montrose. Mit dem Jahrgang 2021 bio-zertifiziert, hat Tronquoy-Lalande niemals Herbizide gesehen; und nach der Übernahme durch Olivier und Martin Bouygues im Jahr 2006 wurde die Kellerei mit Input des verstorbenen Jean-Philippe Delmas neu gestaltet und mit zweistufigen Edelstahltanks nach dem Modell von Château Haut-Brion ausgestattet. Unter der fähigen Leitung von Yves Delsol, der seit 30 Jahren auf dem Weingut arbeitet und somit jedes Detail kennt, ist der Stil nahtlos, komplex und konzentriert, mit einer strukturellen Eleganz, die die Qualität dieser Kiesböden mehr widerspiegelt als irgendwelche Stereotypen der Rustikalität von Saint-Estèphe. Tatsächlich wird dieses Weingut bei jeder Überarbeitung der Klassifikation von 1855 eindeutig den Status eines klassifizierten Wachstums gewinnen. Tronquoy-Lalande wird nicht en primeur verkauft, und Leser können alle hier bewerteten Jahrgänge auf dem Markt finden.

Immer eine leicht Merlot-lastige Mischung, die viel Cabernet Sauvignon sowie kleine Mengen Petit Verdot und Cabernet Franc enthält, bietet der tief purpurfarbene 2019er Château Tronquoy-Lalande einen kraftvollen, mittel- bis vollmundigen, konzentrierten Stil, der beim Lagern belohnt wird. Mit vielen roten und schwarzen Johannisbeerfrüchten sowie Zedernholz-, Eisen- und schokoladigen Aromen hat er eine hervorragende Gesamtausgewogenheit, einen dezenten Eichenton, reife Tannine und einen großartigen Abgang. Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, ihn zu suchen, und er kommt dem 2018er Jahrgang nahe.
