The 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a powerful. exciting wine. That is the good news. But readers are going to have to be patient. as the 2016 shows very little of the upfront appeal that was so evident when it was in barrel. In the glass. the 2016 is sumptuous. vivid and incredibly detailed. with generous super-ripe red fruit and floral notes that develop with time. The wine's concentration and vibrancy lead me to think it will enjoy a very long life. Wow!

The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste gives up pure kirsch and red and black currants with violets and baking spices. Medium-bodied. firm and grainy. it's very expressive with good concentration and length.

A neoclassical edition of Grand-Puy-Lacoste. this has cedar. graphite. deeply integrated cedar and spicy-oak influence and a very fresh array of ripe blackberries. dark cherries and cassis. The palate is so seamless. It builds beautifully and delivers a long. seamless array of perfectly ripe dark fruit. swathed in fine. firm. ascending layers of tannins. As good as we have seen in recent vintages. this is a star of the vintage. Try from 2024.

The 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot that matured in 75% new oak. It has 13.3% alcohol this year. It has an extraordinarily pure bouquet with blackberry. briary. touches of pencil shaving and cedar aromas--quintessential Grand-Puy-Lacoste. basically. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. Gone are the days when this Pauillac was as hard as nails for the first decade. The tannins are nowadays much finer and the acidity lends this tension and plenty of freshness. There is an effortless quality to this Pauillac with wonderful length and such finesse on the finish that you immediately want to go back and re-taste it. Like so many others. this improved with aeration. gaining ever more harmony and precision. What a brilliant wine. It is classic Pauillac to its core.

This is all about the finish with a sweet-tobacco. berry and light milk-chocolate character. Full body. very fine tannins and a juicy finish. Love the intensity and finesse at the end. Lots of energy. Could better the exquisite 2014.

Weitere Information: Bei unseren Primeur Proben im April 2017 konnten wir den Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 2016 verkosten. Bei mehren Verkostungsmöglichkeiten sammelten wir unsere Eindrücke und notierten wie folgt: Gute dichte der Farbe nicht schwarz wie die Comtesse oder Lynch Bages. Die Aromen in der Nase sind fein und reif kleine dunkle Beerenfrüchte und schon eine kleine Bleistiftnote ist zu erkennen. Am Gaumen besitzt der Grand Puy Lacoste dann ebenfalls eine klare Aromatik mit saftiger Frische im Nachhall. Seinen körper empfanden wir als mittel bis kräftig. Er spielt eher auf der eleganteren Pauillacstilistik. Unsere Wertung für den Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 2016 93-95 Punkte. Ohne frage stellt er. wenn die Preise nicht explodieren einen cleveren Kauf dar.

The 2016 Pichon Baron is seamless and racy from start to finish. Sensual and super-expressive. with soft contours. silky tannins and exceptional finesse. Pichon Baron is one of the more accessible wines in its peer group today. Plum. mocha. leather. spice and chocolate all build effortlessly. As outstanding as Pichon Baron is. the 2016 gives the impression it is playing things safe. It would be nice to see a little more daring and risk.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers a suave and seductive nose of warm red and black currants. black plum preserves. truffles. tapenade and rose hip tea with touches of sandalwood and Chinese five spice plus a waft of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied. firmly structured and packed with mineral and exotic spice-laced black fruits. it finishes very long with compelling herbal sparks.

The concentration and largesse of the 2016 Pichon Baron is apparent from the get-go with incredibly alluring. ripe and expansive fruit aromas in the blackberry. dark-cherry. mulberry and plum zone. Espresso and cedar. as well as a slate-like. stony mineral edge add complexity. The palate has incredible depth. drive and detail. Fine and plush tannins stretch the palate in every direction. So fresh and vivacious. this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024.

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron electrifies the olfactory sense with a stunning bouquet of intense blackberry. cedar and graphite aromas that are quintessential Pauillac. Over a few minutes. it blossoms in the glass. gaining more and more depth. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tarry black fruit. cedar and truffle. dovetailing into a saline. peppery finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Christian Seely and his team have imbued recent vintages of this Pauillac with unerring symmetry. and the 2016 can be added to the canon of triumphs.

Medium to full-bodied. rich and fantastically concentrated. the generous fruit is superbly framed by firm. ripe. grainy tannins with tons of pepper. cinnamon and cloves layers coming through on the finish. Truly. a legendary Lynch Bages!

The 2016 Lynch-Bages delivers on its promise from barrel with an intense blackberry. cedar and mineral-driven bouquet that actually reminds me of Lafite-Rothschild. A faint dark chocolate scent makes a brief appearance. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin. pure black fruit and a velvety texture. There is wonderful structure and focus on the finish. followed by a persistent saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Lynch-Bages. easily the best since the twin titans of 1989 and 1990.

A stellar wine. the 2016 Lynch-Bages is dark and explosive in the glass. Beams of tannin and bright acids give the 2016 its sense of drive and tension. From bottle. the 2016 is quite a bit more powerful than it was from barrel. Dark flavors and potent tannins give the 2016 a distinctly brooding. somber feel. Sage. lavender. menthol. licorice and wild cherry are all laced into the potent. dramatically sweeping finish. Readers should not be in a rush. as the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so. it is super-impressive today.

Very rich and exotic with blackberry. black-tea. graphite and lead-pencil aromas. Full-bodied. dense and structured with lots of ripe tannins and a long. flavorful finish of currants and forest floor. combined with fresh mushrooms and bark. Aged for 14 months in 50% new and 50% one-year-old French oak and blended of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon. 21% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Saint-Pierre leaps from the glass with exuberant Black Forest cake. blackberry compote and cassis with hints of cigars. earth and violets with a waft of iron ore. Medium-bodied. the palate has a firm frame of grainy tannins with fantastic energy and depth. finishing on a lingering chocolaty note.

This is fantastic. offering lots of fresh tobacco and blackcurrants and undertones of hazelnuts and chocolate. Full-bodied with firm and chewy tannins. yet ever so polished and refined. One of the most structured St. Pierre’s in years. A blend of 73 per cent cabernet sauvignon. 21 per cent merlot and six per cent cabernet franc. Try from 2024.

Frankly. I liked the 2016 more en primeur.
