The 2016 Branaire-Ducru is powerful. dense and explosive to a degree that is surprising for a wine that is typically much more sensual. There is lovely definition throughout. but readers will have to be patient to catch the 2016 at its very best. Hints of leather. smoke. tobacco and dried flowers begin to open up in the glass. but the 2016 is quite reticent at this stage. In two tastings I found the 2016 unusually closed. Needless to say. it will be interesting to see what time brings.

The best vintage of this wine since 2009! Effusive. fresh redcurrant and cassis aromas give this St.-Julien terrific drive and energy. the elegant. dry tannins beautifully married to the medium body. right through the long. agile finish. Drink or hold.

The 2016 Branaire-Ducru is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon. 27% Merlot. 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc picked from 28 September until 19 October at 50 hectoliters per hectare. one of the longest harvest periods at the estate. The nose is quite intense with black fruit infused with pencil shaving and a touch of tobacco. unashamedly classic in style. a little distant compared to some other Saint Juliens but undeniably well defined and full of character. The palate is structured and masculine. exerting a firm grip in the mouth. spicier than its peers with cracked black pepper complementing the black fruit. tobacco and smoke towards the structured finish. There is great length here. very persistent in the mouth. a little "rougher" in texture than others. but that will be smoothed out during élevage and in bottle. Give this Branaire-Ducru five or six years in bottle because it has great potential. one of the best produced at the estate in recent years. (NB This sample was taken from a new barrel. though the final blend will be 60%.)

This is clearly the best wine I have tasted from Branaire-Ducru. Exquisite depth and richness are on offer. yet this is always framed and focused. Layers of fruit and tannins. So deep and long. Incredible quality.

Reminding me of the 2010 with its incredible stature and class (as opposed to the more opulently styled 2009), the 2016 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a legendary wine from the genius of Bruno Borie, who has managed this estate brilliantly since he arrived in 2003. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot brought up all in new oak, the 2016 has a mammoth bouquet of crème de cassis, espresso, camphor, crushed violets, toasty oak, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, and backward on the palate, it nevertheless has perfectly integrated acidity and building tannins, a concentrated, layered texture, off-the-charts purity of fruit, and a finish that won't quit. Give this powerful, concentrated wine a solid 7-8 years of bottle age and enjoy it over the following 50 years or more.

The 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou is an arrestingly beautiful wine. Powerful and sensual in the glass. the 2016 exudes remarkable concentration from start to finish. Red cherry fruit. pomegranate. blood orange. menthol and sweet tobacco all race across the palate. Vivid. sumptuous and impeccable in its balance. Ducru is one of the wines of the vintage in 2016. It has been unforgettable on both occasions I have tasted it from bottle so far.

eep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou features a wonderfully savory. earthy/meaty nose. delivering well-defined notes of tapenade. truffles. charcuterie and sautéed herbs over crème de cassis. wild blueberries and kirsch with wafts of pencil lead and menthol. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is built like a brick house with the taut. muscular fruit well framed by very firm yet very ripe and finely grained tannins. offering a quiet intensity of red fruit and mineral sparks and finishing with epic length.

The 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou. bottled in August 2018. is very deep in color. It has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry. boysenberry and minerals and a faint estuarine tang of oyster shells. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. layers of pure blackberry and wild strawberry. and veins of blue fruit tinged with a conspicuous graphite note that becomes more pronounced with aeration. This is almost a Pauillac-like Ducru-Beaucaillou. quite noble and blue-blooded. A wine that should give 40 to 50 years of drinking pleasure.

Super perfumed. attractive violets with a thread of fresh blueberries. cassis. blackberries and dark plums. delivering a very enticing impression. Beautiful ripeness here. The tannins are perfectly ripe and layers meld into each other. carrying deep. graceful and plush. velvety dark fruit long into the vibrant and seductive. chocolate-laced finish. Great potential. Try from 2024.

Aged for 14 months in 50% new and 50% one-year-old French oak and blended of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon. 21% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Saint-Pierre leaps from the glass with exuberant Black Forest cake. blackberry compote and cassis with hints of cigars. earth and violets with a waft of iron ore. Medium-bodied. the palate has a firm frame of grainy tannins with fantastic energy and depth. finishing on a lingering chocolaty note.

This is fantastic. offering lots of fresh tobacco and blackcurrants and undertones of hazelnuts and chocolate. Full-bodied with firm and chewy tannins. yet ever so polished and refined. One of the most structured St. Pierre’s in years. A blend of 73 per cent cabernet sauvignon. 21 per cent merlot and six per cent cabernet franc. Try from 2024.

The purity of cabernet sauvignon really comes through here with currants. blackberries and stones. Perfumed. too. Medium to full body. Very fine. polished tannins and a fresh. fruity finish. This shows a compact palate with a polished. creamy finish. Much higher percentage of cabernet than is usual. Drink after 2023.

Léoville-Barton is one of the very few wines. from any appellation. that combines power and finesse with such grace in 2017. Rich. deep and wonderfully expressive. the 2017 has so much offer. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon comes through loud and clear. Inky dark. fruit. game. spice. mint. licorice and lavender all build in a wine of regal elegance and head spinning beauty. For its combination of quality and price. Léoville-Barton remains one the most consumer-friendly wines of the Left Bank. The blend is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. The September rains were especially challenging for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc. As a result. Cabernet is pushed up in the blend. while there is no Franc at all.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Léoville Barton charges out of the gate with bold notions of baked plums, crème de cassis and blueberry preserves plus wafts of pencil shavings, fragrant earth and cedar chest.
