Very perfumed and subtle with crushed currants. smoke and blackberries. Medium to full body. Compressed. round tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows focus and finesse with serious structure for the vintage. It grows slowly on the palate. Really beautiful. Drink after 2022.

The 2017 Troplong Mondot is stunning. just as it was en primeur. Rich and ample. yet endowed with striking energy as well. the 2017 is the first vintage made by new CEO Aymeric de Gironde and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos. The 2017 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. All of the power that is typical of this site is evident. it seems to come so naturally. and yet picking earlier and then using a lighter hand in the cellar yielded a Troplong of uncommon energy and vibrancy. The 2017 has been nothing short of thrilling on the four occasions I have tasted it from bottle so far. What a wine!

The 2017 Chateau Troplong Mondot continues in the new style of this estate and is based on 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc from healthy yields of 48 hectoliters per hectare. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a stunning perfume of creme de cassis, black raspberries, white chocolate, crushed flowers, and a terrific sense of minerality. Flawlessly balanced, medium to full-bodied, and nicely concentrated, it shows the more elegant, classical style of the vintage beautifully. It has the texture and balance to drink brilliantly today yet will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for two decades or more.

Very deep purple-black in color. it offers up a cedar chest. cinnamon stick and cloves-laced nose with a core of crème de cassis. blackberry compote and preserved plums plus wafts of licorice. violets and sandalwood. Full-bodied. concentrated and sporting a firm frame of velvety tannins. it has a lively line lifting the densely packed fruit. finishing long and on a compelling savory note.

This has a very attractive. ripe black-fruit nose with toasted spices. violets and dark-stone notes. Iodine and cedar. too. The palate is powerful and has quite intense flavors of blackberries and blueberries with a super rich and ripe frame of tannin that carries long and expands the finish in impressive style. Very long. Try from 2025. (verkostet am 19.12.2019)

The 2017 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is powerful and backward. with huge tannins wrapped around a core of black cherry. smoke. charcoal. licorice. blackberry jam and graphite. Exotic and rich in the glass. the 2017 needs time to soften. but it is immensely promising. not to mention utterly captivating. Tasted three times.

Nicolas Audebert and his team have done it again. The 2017 Canon is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Rich and vertical in construction. the 2017 possesses off-the-charts richness and intensity in all of its dimensions. In the glass. the 2017 is sumptuous and layered. with superb detail and tons of sheer pedigree. In 20 years. readers will have a fabulous time tasting the 2015. 2016. 2017 and 2018 together and debating their respective merits. Dark plum fruit. striking Franc aromatics and the clean. focused energy of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau make for a ravishing. exquisite wine of the highest level. In a word: breathtaking.

Showing spectacularly, the 2017 Chateau Canon checks in as a final blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc that’s from one of the most exceptional terroirs in the appellation. Hitting 14% alcohol (the pH is 3.66), it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeously sweet raspberries and cassis-like fruit interwoven with notes of spring flowers, rose petal, white chocolate, and spice. While it doesn’t have the massive opulence of the 2015 and 2016, it’s more classically styled as well flawlessly balanced, with a terrific sense of minerality, ultra-fine tannins, and a brilliant finish. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, and it will evolve gracefully for 30-40 years. Hats off to Nicolas Audebert as well as the team of Thomas Duclos for one of the wines of the vintage!

Made of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. the 2017 Belair Monange is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. With a little swirling. this baby comes bounding out of the glass with energetic notes of wild blueberries. Morello cherries. baked plums and black raspberries with wafts of Indian spices. lavender. garrigue and tobacco plus a hint of licorice. Medium to full-bodied. the black and blue fruit dance playfully on the palate with fantastic freshness to lift the bold flavors and a superb frame of ripe. velvety tannins. It finishes very long and with amazing zing. So tempting to drink now. but make no mistake—this is one for the long haul!

Fresh earth. truffle. sous bois and attractively ripe blueberry and plum aromas here. It’s a bold and very pure. primary wine here for now. yet this has great potential. The palate reveals beautifully ripe red-plum and cherry flavors with a powerful tannin statement that carries impressive depth and scale on the finish. Give this time. Try from 2023.

The 2017 Bélair-Monange was so impressive out of barrel and now in bottle. I see no reason to alter my appreciation. It has a very intense bouquet. one that is reassuringly complex. especially in context of what was a rather ordinary growing season with copious red cherries. boysenberry. hints of iodine and a light terracotta scent. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are surprisingly rigid at the moment. suggesting that this will be a long term Saint-Émilion. There is a beguiling sense of symmetry. very mineral-driven towards the finish that has impressive sapidity. This comes highly recommended although it deserves five or six years in bottle. Bravo Christian and Edouard Moueix.

100% Merlot gewachsen auf 2 Ha in unmittelbarer Sichtweite zu Le Pin und Vieux Chateau Certan. Mittlere bis volle Dichte. im Kern schwarz. schöne satte Frucht in der Nase. sehr feine Kirsche. auch hier wurde der Neuholzanteil zurückgefahren. trotzdem findet man diese zart süsslichen Anklänge wieder. Am Gaumen mit Kühle. sehr gute Harmonie keine Spur von Hitze. polierte Tannine. wieder diese unglaublich mineralische Frische. die nur dieses Terroir im Pomerol bieten kann. Würde man in die Wertung das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis einfliessen lassen. so müsste man deutlich höher punkten.

So ist und bleibt Haut Tropchaud 2018 auch in diesem herausfordernden JG eines der unglaublichsten Schnäppchen.
